RACE 1 - CHURCH OF APOSTLES MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Trainer Terry Roles was fined $50 under AR 59A (d) for not having the Document of Description for ROBESPIERRE available for inspection.

Trainer Leon Wells was charged $27.50 for the use of the all pink Club colours on LADY ETOILE.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey T Atkin the rider of the 4th placed horse AMELINDA lodged a protest against the 3rd placed horse HYDE (S Tsaikos) on the grounds of interference over the last 200m of the event. It was established that shortly after leaving the 200m mark HYDE rolled in marginally. As a result AMELINDA who was making ground to its inside had to be steadied and checked out over the heels of this filly to obtain a clear run. It was Stewards view that the interference suffered by AMELINDA exceeded the margin of a half head at the lime. Stewards upheld the protest and the Judge’s placings were amended to 5, 7, 10, 11, 14. Correct weight was announced at 12.58 p.m.

ATTO (S McFerran) jumped awkwardly at the start and bounded in the air.

PINTERRY MORGAN (D Pires (a)) was slow away.

Shortly after the start SAFE HAVEN (K Bandy) commenced to buck and ducked in abruptly and thereafter continued to buck. As a result Jockey Bandy restrained his mount and eased this filly out of the event. In view of this filly’s intractable behaviour Stewards advised Trainer Graeme McCulloch it is to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before it’s next race start.

Stewards charged Jockey S Maskiell the rider of ROYAL ASSAULT under AR 137 (a), Careless Riding, the particulars of the charge being that approaching the 900m mark he permitted his mount to shift ground inwards and in doing so crossed HYDE (S Tsaikos) when insufficiently clear of this filly, which resulted in Jockey Tsaikos having to check his mount and switch out over the heels of ROYAL ASSAULT to obtain a clear run. However, Stewards withdrew the charge after taking into account the following evidence in relation to this matter. The evidence of Jockey S Tsaikos that he had anticipated the movement of ROYAL ASSAULT and when easing back on his mount it overreacted and also evidence tendered by Trainer W Ryan (ROYAL ASSAULT) to the effect that this gelding has a “dead mouth”. Jockey S Maskiell was of the opinion that ROYAL ASSAULT did not respond immediately to his efforts to straighten. In the circumstances Stewards gave Jockey Maskiell the benefit of the doubt. However, notwithstanding this fact, Stewards advised Jockey Maskiell that in future he is to take far greater care when shifting ground. As a result of this incident ANDRE THE GIANT (B McCoull) shied away from HYDE and crowded SAVONNEUX (K Sanderson) to its inside.

A post race Veterinary inspection of SAFE HAVEN revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event ANDRE THE GIANT (Trainer Helen Patterson).

In addition, Stewards took note of the betting activity in this event and also questioned Trainer Darrel Baldock (DERE TO QUIT) and Trainer Graeme McCulloch (LUNAR TIARA) on the instructions given to their riders. In the circumstances Stewards were satisfied that there had been no breach of the Rules regarding running and handling however all riders were advised that Stewards had concern for the fact that no one rider showed initiative to make ground on CAUSE TO GOSSIP (T Atkin) until well inside the 800m mark. Stewards further advised all riders in general terms that in future in similar circumstances they are to adopt a more competitive approach and show more initiative than they did on this occasion.
