Prior to the announcement of correct weight Stewards checked the Judge’s result in relation to the 2nd and 3rd placed horses as Jockey Maskiell the rider of CHAPELLERIE was of the opinion that he had run 2nd. Approaching the 1200m mark DENON (L Goodrick) had to be restrained by its rider when tightened for galloping room behind DURRENMATT (K Sanderson) and to the inside of MINNIE MOUSQUITO (C Burt). As a result PRINCE RAFTER (S Maskiell) who was following had to be checked by its rider and in consequence LIBBIANNE (S Tsaikos) also had to be checked. Stewards were unable to attribute any blame to any particular rider and in the circumstances spoke to all riders and advised them to take far greater care when shifting ground.

Jockey Snell reported that his mount struck the running rail at about the 800m mark.

BOLD DIP (K Moore) was held up for a clear run from approximately the 200m mark behind DELFINO (J Borrett). As a result BOLD DIP (K Moore) shifted out and contacted with DENON (L Goodrick) who in turn made contact with JOIN THE QUEUE (K Dodge) approaching the 50m mark.

WESTERN CHEER was a late scratching by order of Stewards acting on Veterinary advice at 4.02 p.m.

LILAC SKY (S Tsaikos) jumped awkwardly at the start.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey B McCoull the rider of the second placed horse DREAM QUEST lodged a protest against the first placed horse BIRLE’S GAMBLE (C Kingston) on the grounds of interference over the concluding 400m of the event. In considering their decision in relation to the protest Stewards considered that the aggressor in this case was BIRLE’S GAMBLE and that DREAM QUEST had not moved independently at any time during the course of the interference suffered, and given the extent of the interference and taking into account the half head at the line Stewards were satisfied that DREAM QUEST would have finished ahead of BIRLE’S GAMBLE had the interference not occurred. The protest was upheld. The placings were amended to 3 (DREAM QUEST), 2 (BIRLE’S GAMBLE), 11 (FRACAS). It was established that racing to the 150m mark BIRLE’S GAMBLE shifted out and made contact with DREAM QUEST to its outside and continued to carry DREAM QUEST on an outward course for approximately 6 horses. Stewards reprimanded Jockey C Kingston for shifting ground in the straight, and reminded Jockey Kingston of his obligation to stop riding and straighten his mounts in future.

At about the 1300m mark LILAC SKY (T Tsaikos) became crowded towards the inside of OLD EUGOWRA (D Parish) and had to be checked by its rider and as a result shifted outwards. As a result CONFABULATOR (J Borrett) became crowded for room to the outside of FATHER PATRICK (C Newitt (a)), shifted out and inconvenienced SONAR DREAM (W Stacey (a)). Thereafter at about the 1200m mark LILAC SKY raced ungenerously for a number of strides, threw its head up and was awkwardly placed on the heels of runners in front. Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider in relation to the interference and in the circumstances advised all riders to take care when shifting ground.

A pre-race Veterinary inspection of WESTERN CHEER revealed the filly had reared in the urinating stall prior to the race and struck her head lacerating the forehead area, and was subsequently scratched from this event.
