2010 Hobart Cup Full Preview With Tips

This Monday, February 8, a field of sixteen runners will line up in Hobart to contest the $400,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2200m) in what will be arguably the strongest in the races history - possibly the states history.

The Tasmanian Group Three event has produced a number of quality winners including Zacielo, Blutigeroo, Palos Verdes, L'Espion and of course Melbourne Cup winner Piping lane but it is the depth of this years event which sets it apart from any other.

Rathsallagh, currently a  $4.60  favourite on TAB Sportsbet, is trained by Robert Smerdon and will be ridden by Cox Plate winning jockey Glen Boss, but the race is far from a one horse affair.

The Virtual FormGuide has taken a look over the field and previewed each of the sixteen runners chances:

1) Zavite:  A grand performer who has won over a million dollars in prizemoney but he has been up for a long time in a race that is usually an exaggerated 1800m sit & sprint.  Place

2) Ista Kareem:  Short freshen up after Melbourne Cup run and set for another Launceston Cup victory - this would be an unlikely bonus.  Place

3) Platwright:  In form and on pace style will suit, this is the furthest he has ever gone but is not normally run as such.  Winning Chance

4) Ballack:  Could win at his best but isn't racing as well as some of these currently.  Rough place

5) Bangerang Quikpic:  Right age, right form, right preparation, right jockey and right trainer (he has won three already) whatever beats him will win.  Winning Chance

6) Growl:  Terrific run last start and should be spot on with 3 weeks between runs but will be giving the leaders a big start.  Winning Chance.

7) Larry's Never Late:  Definitely has the class and form is solid, cant see him turning the tables on Bangerang Quikpic this year but only 4 and will be back.  Winning Chance

8) Dream Pedlar:  The best of the locals and impressive in the same race last year but outclassed this year.

9) Rathsallagh:  On pace style will help but 2400m staying test at Sandown Lakeside may have taken the edge off him too much, risk but winning chance.  Winning Chance

10) De Fine Lago:  Has come a long way this preparation and speed map would suggest he will have the sit on the leaders - keep in multiples for value and follow next prep.  Strong Place Chance

11) Syndrome:  Top trainer and good form, probably find the same horses too strong but place chance.  Place Chance

12) Assent:  In from local from Victorian chuck out sale.  Stable is flying and expect him to be thereabouts on the corner.

13) Beven Heights:  Bad barrier and couldn't win on recent form.

14) The Tiger:  Has chased home shocking over 2000m and he would be favourite in this... rough winning chance for the likely Stutt Stakes winners traveling companion.  Rough Place Chance

15) Maybe French:  In form but out of depth.

16) Mr Isaac:  Trained by Tassie's Cups King Gary White but even his polish won't be enough here.  Could be in the picture this time next year.
