RACE 1 - R W TRINDER STEEPLE - 3300 METRES - 6 RUNNERS

The start of Race 1 was delayed due to the non-arrival on course of the second ambulance, required to be in attendance for the steeple race. As a result stewards, after consulting with the Club Secretary, decided to move all races back one position in the time slots as indicated in the race timetable. This resulted in Race 8 being allotted the start time of 5.45 p.m.

ROSCO (NZ) (Simon Ryan) was retired from the event at about the 600 metre mark and failed to negotiate the last three steeples. A veterinary inspection of the gelding subsequent to the event revealed no obvious abnormalities. When questioned about the gelding’s performance, jockey Ryan stated that the horse made a respiratory noise in running and as a result he thought there was something amiss and eased ROSCO (NZ) out of the event.

DR BARRETT (Rachel Lane) cast its near fore plate in running.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MISTY WEATHER (Trainer Michael Trinder).

RACE 2 -T.B.T. SUPERVOBIS TWO-YEARS-OLD BREEDERS STAKES - 1175 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

TRAVEL POINT (Leah Goodrick) was momentarily held up rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening.

WINDIAN (David Pires (a)) switched out for a clear run about the 150 metre mark and carried TORQUE RHYTHM (Simon Snell) wider on the track. Apprentice Pires was shown the video footage of the incident.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race ELLIPSE (Trainer John Blacker)

RACE 3 - SPREYTON FOOTBALL CLUB MAIDEN PLATE - 1175 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

MAPATAZ (David Pires (a)) jumped in at the start and contacted with MOZZY (Kelvin Sanderson).

EILY’S LASS (Jodi Borrett) blundered at the start.

At about the 700 metre mark SHOEYOCHA (David Keating (a)) had to switch out over the heels of ME OLD MUKKA (Simon Snell) to obtain clear running.

SOMERVILLE STAR (Brendon McCoull) threw its head up and raced ungenerously for some distance between the 800 and 700 metre mark.

HYDE (Stan Tsaikos) was forced to ease momentarily rounding the home turn.

SHOEYOCHA (David Keating (a)) had to be steadied off the heels of ALI’S BEST (James Nevin (a)) at about the 150 metre mark when this filly shifted in when it commenced to lay in. Thereafter SHOEYOCHA continued to lay in throughout in the straight.

A post race veterinary inspection of GRACEFUL FLYER (Dianne Parish) revealed the filly was shin sore, particularly in the near foreleg. Stewards advised trainer Barry Campbell that a veterinary certificate of soundness would be required before GRACEFUL FLYER’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race LE COUNT (Trainer Michael Trinder).

RACE 4 - TOTE TASMANIA MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

CADUCCI (Jodi Borrett) jumped out at the start and made contact with METSOLA (Kane Bandy) who in turn contacted JACK WILL DANCE (NZ) (Terry Wong (a)).

Shortly after leaving the winning post for the first time CADUCCI (Jodi Borrett) commenced to shift ground outwards and in doing so carried METSOLA (Kane Bandy) outwards. In turn this horse carried JACK WILL DANCE (NZ) (Terry Wong (a)) outwards, resulting in these two horses becoming crowded for galloping room. Shortly thereafter JACK WILL DANCE (NZ) clipped the heels of KIWI ICON (NZ) (David Keating (a)) and blundered. In the circumstances, after questioning jockey Borrett in relation to this incident, stewards took no direct action against any one rider and considered submissions made by Miss Borrett that her horse had made the turn awkwardly and commenced to lay out. Notwithstanding this fact, stewards reminded jockey Borrett of her obligations when shifting ground.

Approaching the 1100 metre mark REGENT PRINCE (Ernest Chan (a)), when awkwardly placed to the inside of BEBE (Stan Tsaikos), shifted out after being restrained by its rider over the heels of BEBE and in doing so carried METSOLA (Kane Bandy) and CADUCCI (J Borrett) wider on the track.

Rounding the home turn just prior to straightening TAL QORMI (Leah Goodrick) shifted out and carried BOLD DIP (Simon Snell) outwards. At the same time KIWI ICON (NZ) (David Keating (a)) shifted inwards and as a result of both these movements TRADE ZONE (James Nevin (a)) became buffeted between runners and was forced to check. Both jockey Goodrick and apprentice Keating were shown the video of the incident and reminded of their obligations when shifting ground.

Stewards inquired into a report of an incident at about the 500 metre mark when RACER’S BEST (Corey Kingston) shifted inwards and crowded ACE OF JEWELS (Stephen Maskiell) to its inside, resulting in ACE OF JEWELS making contact with the inside running rail and becoming partially unseated. Given the circumstances and the evidence available, stewards were unable to attribute any blame on the part of jockey Kingston and took no further action other than to remind jockey Kingston to ensure that he takes far greater care when shifting ground in future.

Jockey Simon Snell, the rider of BOLD DIP, accidentally dropped his whip at about the 100 metre mark.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race AT ST CATHARINES (Trainer Michael Trinder).

RACE 5 - 7AD/SEAFM HANDICAP - 1600 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

The race book failed to indicate Stan Tsaikos as the rider of LUNAR TIARA. Stewards intend to investigate the reasons why jockey Tsaikos’ name was not reflected in the race book.

At about the 1400 metre mark STRAIT DASH (Ernest Chan (a)) had to be checked off the heels of SUPER HENRY (NZ) (Corey Kingston) when this gelding was awkwardly placed to the inside of this horse’s heels.

Approaching the 1100 metre mark STRAIT DASH (Ernest Chan (a)) appeared to lose its footing behind, fell and dislodged apprentice Chan. Apprentice Chan was attended to by the on course ambulance staff and taken to hospital for observation immediately following the running of this event. As a result of this horse falling, and the fallen rider, the following horses were inconvenienced:- CREIGHTON (NZ) (Dianne Parish), LUNAR TIARA (Stan Tsaikos), LOVE ME BACK (Jodi Borrett) and WILLOW SPRINGS (Simon Snell). Apprentice Chan’s skull cap was confiscated. A post-race veterinary inspection of STRAIT DASH revealed a small skin laceration to the outside near fore cannon. There was no associated lameness.

Following this event stewards inspected the track in the vicinity where STRAIT DASH fell and found nothing untoward.

RACE 6 - FASHION & BEAUTY CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1175 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

The starting times of Races 6, 7 and 8 were amended, as a result of the on course ambulance having to attend to apprentice Ernest Chan, and the ambulance awaiting the arrival of a second ambulance to transport apprentice Chan. The new starting times, after consultation with the Club Secretary, were decided upon as follows:-
Race 6 - 4.50 p.m.
7 - 5.25 p.m.
8 - 6.00 p.m.

MADE DOWN UNDER (David Keating (a)) and JACARANDA PARK (Terry Wong (a)) were both a little slow away.

Rounding the home turn LLYN BRIANNE (Stan Tsaikos) shifted out and carried MADE DOWN UNDER (David Keating (a)) wider on the track. A post race veterinary examination of LLYN BRIANNE revealed blood in the mouth which was of nil significance.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening, JACARANDA PARK (Terry Wong (a)) was momentarily held up for a clear run.

JACARANDA PARK (Terry Wong (a)), who had a tendency to lay in, shifted in at about the 100 metre mark and as a result apprentice Wong had to stop riding his mount and straighten.

MR BUTTKICKA (Stephen Maskiell) commenced to shift ground outwards under pressure approaching the 100 metre mark and in doing so carried LONELY SHORE (Brendon McCoull) wider up the track. A post race veterinary examination of MR BUTTKICKA revealed the horse pulled up distressed, ataxic, staggering, blew excessively, heart rate rapid but regular, mucous membranes cyanotic. The gelding was treated with anti-inflammatories and improved over the next twenty minutes (heart rate 88 beats/minute). The gelding still remained uncomfortable but was able to be examined. GIT on right upper quadrant were rapid and spasmodic. A tentative diagnosis of colic was made and the gelding further treated with anti-inflammatories. MR BUTTKICKA continued to improve and was walked. GIT sounds remained spasmodic and heart rate reduced to 80 beats/minute. It was decided not to transport the gelding home but keep him stabled close to the track and monitor.

RACE 7 - CLAUDE BEST MEMORIAL CLASS 6 HANDICAP - 1175 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

SILVER LASER (Simon Snell) jumped awkwardly.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening, OUR MARFOO (NZ) (Terry Wong (a)) shifted in, which resulted in ZAMFRAN (David Pires (a)) becoming tightened for galloping room and having to be eased by its rider for a number of strides. Apprentice Wong, in the presence of his master Mr Leon Wells, was shown the video of this incident and advised to keep his mounts on a straight course at all times.

RACE 8 - THE ADVOCATE CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1800 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Apprentice David Pires, the rider of SINODAL, was fined the sum of $100 (A.R.83(a)) for the use of foul language, whilst mounted on this horse, on the way to the barriers, in close proximity to members of the public.

HUTTON (Stan Tsaikos) and TATTLE TOWN (NZ) (Leah Goodrick) contacted at the start. A post race veterinary examination of TATTLE TOWN (NZ) revealed no abnormalities.

DEVON RELAY (Kellie Cook), HUTTON (Stan Tsaikos) and RUN THE BALL (NZ) (David Keating (a)) all over-raced in the early stages.

At approximately the 250 metre mark SHIRVINGTON (Will Stacey (a)) shifted ground outwards and made contact with SIR RODGER (Terry Wong (a)) before being straightened by its rider.

At approximately the 150 metre mark SINODAL (David Pires (a)) laid in and apprentice Pires had to stop riding for several strides and straighten his mount.

GENERAL

The race book indicated that apprentice D Pires was a 1.5 kg claiming apprentice at today’s meeting, when in fact he has no claim at country meetings. Stewards made an announcement to this effect prior to the running of the second event at today’s meeting.
