RACE 1 - BRIDLES RESTAURANT CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 2100 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

Shortly after jumping DEEP BENCH (S Snell) shifted ground inwards tightening MAN IN BLACK (L Balding) in on to PRIVATE ENSIGN (B McCoull).

Leaving the straight at about the 1900 metre mark, PRIVATE ENSIGN (B McCoull) got its head up in the air, shifted ground outwards and raced ungenerously for some distance.

On straightening, DEEP BENCH (S Snell) was momentarily held up behind runners in front.

MAN IN BLACK (L Balding) had a tendency to hang in for the entire length of the home straight resulting in Jockey L Balding having to stop riding and straighten the gelding on several occasions.

RACE 2 - CASCADE DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 1 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

Trainer Royston Carr was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club’s colours on RAILTON.

The start was delayed when FAIRLANDS MAGIC (Trainer Larry Dalco) refused to be loaded into its barrier stall. Stewards, acting on advice from the Starter, declared FAIRLANDS MAGIC a late scratching at 12.29 pm. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on FAIRLANDS MAGIC (20/1) prior to 12.29 pm to be refunded in full with no further alterations to be made to betting. Trainer L Dalco was advised that FAIRLANDS MAGIC will have to pass a barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before the filly’s nomination will be accepted in future.

BADGER’S RETREAT (L Balding) failed to muster early speed.

At approximately the 1000 metre mark FYNDARN FLYER (L Goodrick) shifted in and brushed with KILANDY PRINCESS (J Borrett).

Rounding the home turn, MOCULTA (J Nevin A) was momentarily held up behind the tiring FYNDARN FLYER (L Goodrick) and had to shift to the outside of that horse’s heels to improve.

WALK THE CAGE (S Maskiell) had a tendency to lay out in the early stages of the straight.

LADY QUEST (B McCoull) had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

A post-race veterinary inspection of KILANDY PRINCESS revealed the mare to have a painful area in the shin region. Trainer Allan Stubbs will be advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate of soundness before KILANDY PRINCESS’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race WALK THE CAGE (Trainer Charlie Goggin).

RACE 3 - CASCADE PREMIUM LIGHT MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2 - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

FILL LIFE WITH JOY (K Dodge) stood flat-footed as the gates were released and lost some ground in consequence.

As the start was affected, DURRENMATT (P Michaelides) was tightened for galloping room between CHATALOT (C Kingston) which jumped in and PRINCESS OF CHEERS (C Burt) which shifted ground outwards. At the same time NOT RESPONSIBLE (L Balding) which jumped with its head in the air, over-reacted and shifted in away from DURRENMATT (P Michaelides).

At about the 300 metres GREY GOD (B Mason) shifted ground outwards carrying RUSTY PAL (S Maskiell) out on to BANDMAN (R Bradley A). Jockey B Mason was advised that in similar circumstances, he should stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he had done on this occasion

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race CHATALOT (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 4 - THORPE TRANSPORT MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 3 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed when DALIOCHA (Trainer Steve Griffiths), after being loaded, kicked the back of the gates and was removed from the barriers. The filly was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place with the field.

On jumping, FOREVER ROSE (K Dodge) was tightened for room between TEBONNET (NZ) (K Moore) and ROCK’N’SEA (C Kingston) both of whom shifted ground.

DALIOCHA (S Snell) was slow into stride.

Approaching the 1100 metre mark, REGENT PRINCE (S Maskiell) which had begun from an inside barrier, shifted to the outside of the track to find better going, which resulted in FOREVER ROSE (K Dodge), which was racing ungenerously at the time, having to be steadied off the heels of REGENT PRINCE. Jockey Maskiell was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground in future.

FOREVER ROSE (K Dodge) negotiated the turn awkwardly at the 600 metres mark.

FOREVER ROSE (K Dodge) raced green throughout the event.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race NEWRY (Trainer Terry Roles).

RACE 5 - METRO CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Stewards heard a submission from Trainer D Brunton to allow an apprentice rider to replace the injured Jockey T McAllister on NANNIE DIGGER. After giving consideration to Trainer Brunton’s submission, Stewards advised him that in this instance, as there were suitable senior riders available, his request was denied.

Rounding the turn at the 1200 metre mark, MR SOHO (S Snell) shied in and away from the outside running rail resulting in NANNIE DIGGER (K Dodge) being carried in across the heels of BICAPOBLUE (S Quilty).

Approaching the 700 metre mark, DAYBREAK DAWN (B Mason) when attempting to take a run between DRY WHITE (S Maskiell) and HAPPY FLIRT (C Kingston), became reluctant to push forward and had to be switched in over the heels of HAPPY FLIRT (S Kingston).

Approaching the home turn DAYBREAK DAWN (B Mason), when attempting to take a run to the inside of BICAPOBLUE (S Quilty), had to be checked by its rider when it was unable to establish a run to the inside of that gelding. When questioned, Jockey Mason stated that although there was a run there momentarily, DAYBREAK DAWN was reluctant to take the opening and the gap closed before he was fully established. A veterinary inspection of DAYBREAK DAWN subsequent to the race revealed a minor laceration above the fetlock on the off foreleg.

RACE 6 - TILFORD CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 2100 METRES - 6 RUNNERS

MARETTE was scratched shortly after acceptances on Thursday, 14 August when the mare was found to be ineligible for the Tilford Class 6 Handicap. Stewards took no action against Trainer J K Blacker regarding the circumstances of MARETTE’s ineligibility.

Stewards questioned Jockey C Kingston, the rider of BASE JUMPER, in relation to the gelding’s poor performance in today’s event. Jockey Kingston stated that he did try to adopt his normal pattern of riding on the gelding, however, the gelding was reluctant to stretch out and race on the bit at any stage of the race. He tested the gelding at about the 1200 metre mark and he was of the opinion that the gelding was gone at that stage of the race. He further stated that the hard run on the heavy track at Mowbray the previous week may have had a bearing on today’s performance. Stewards noted Jockey Kingston’s comments. A post-race veterinary inspection of BASE JUMPER (Trainer Rodney Seymour) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 7 - GOLDING FAMILY HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Stewards heard an application from Jockey B Mason that he believed he held a firm engagement for FANTA’S REVENGE. After hearing submissions from Jockey B Mason, Trainer Jack Green and Mrs C R Worbey, Stewards were satisfied that Jockey B Mason did not hold a firm engagement for that gelding.

TIGER TALK (J Nevin A) missed the start and lost approximately two lengths.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, TIGER TALK (J Nevin A) had to be steadied off the heels of STRAIT DASH (C Kingston) when that gelding shifted ground inwards.

Leaving the 400 metre mark, BUNDALAGHUAH (S Quilty) was held up for a number of strides.

Over the concluding stages, CLUB MOXIE (J Borrett) shifted ground up the track under pressure.

RACE 8 - HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1100 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed when LAKE SOLVEIG (S Maskiell) broke through the front of its barrier gates. The mare was restrained by the Clerks of the Course and returned to behind the barriers where the veterinary surgeon inspected it. After being re-loaded, LAKE SOLVEIG again broke through the barriers and cantered riderless from the 1000 metres round to the crossing at the 1900 metres where it entered the race-day stalls area and was recaptured. LAKE SOLVEIG was returned to the barriers, where it was inspected and passed fit to take its place with the field. Upon re-loading, LAKE SOLVEIG became fractious in the barriers resulting in Jockey S Maskiell suffering an injury to his left ankle. After undergoing an examination by the on-course ambulance officers, Jockey Maskiell was declared fit to take his ride on the mare. The race was approximately fifteen minutes late starting. Trainer Gary White was advised that a warning has been placed on LAKE SOLVEIG’s barrier manners.

DAUBERWIN (K Dodge) was inclined to shift ground up the track under pressure over the concluding stages.

Mr Ian Hay, the trainer of RULAANI (the third placegetter) lodged an objection following the running of the event, on the grounds of his horse being placed at an unfair advantage due to LAKE SOLVEIG breaking through the barriers and delaying the start. The start of the race was further delayed to avoid race clashes at other venues. Stewards, after hearing Mr Hay’s submission, declared correct weight.

RACE 9 - GREAT WESTERN CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1000 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

As the start was affected, KING FLYER (R Hanby A) jumped out carrying LICAM LACAL (K Sanderson) out on to CANDLE IN THE WIND (K Dodge) who lost a little ground in consequence. As a result jockey K Dodge had to steady CANDLE IN THE WIND and the mare lost a little ground in consequence.

KING FLYER (R Hanby A) had a tendency to lay in up the straight resulting in Apprentice Hanby having to stop riding and straighten the horse on several occasions.

On returning to scale, Jockey S Snell reported that on jumping he lost his near-side stirrup iron which placed him at a disadvantage for a short distance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BULBASAUR (Trainer John Luttrell).
