RACE 1 - STAGE DESIGN MAIDEN PLACE – DIVISION 1 - SET WEIGHTS - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – 1400 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

GOLD SEQUEL (L Goodrick) and THE SCOUSE DEVIL (C Kingston) were both a fraction slow to begin.

HE’S QUICK (S Snell) raced green in the early stages of the event.

Rounding the 1200 metre turn, WESTELLE (S Tsaikos) over-raced for several strides.

At approximately the 1000 metres, MISTELLA (D Keating A) had to be eased off the heels of HE’S QUICK (S Snell).

At the 600 metre turn, ANTONIO (J Nevin A) appeared to roll in momentarily and as a result GO LIKE ELLE (S McFerran) had to be steadied off its heels.

Shortly after straightening, PERSONAL PEAK (S Maskiell) was inclined to lay in under pressure.

At approximately the 250 metres MATSONATION (K Sanderson) jumped a shadow on the track.

GOLD SEQUEL (L Goodrick) laid in and raced green for the major part of the home straight and in doing so contacted BLUE LANI (D Pires A) causing that filly to become unbalanced for several strides.

On returning to scale, Jockey L Goodrick (GOLD SEQUEL) reported that her gelding raced green throughout the event.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race POPULAIRE (Trainer David Brunton).

RACE 2 - QANTAS MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2 - SET WEIGHTS - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – 1400 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

TENORIN (K Sanderson), SONAR DREAM (D Keating A) and FOREVER ROSE (L Goodrick) were all slow to begin.

MILITIA (K Dodge) was inclined to over-race in the early stages.

RUNALOT (C Burt) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages.

ESTATE KING (C Kingston) raced wide throughout the event.

At about the 500 metres, STRATHMORE LUCK (B McCoull) shifted outwards causing MILITIA (K Dodge) and MATICHELLO (K Moore) to shift wider on the track.

Near the 400 metres Jockey K Dodge (MILITIA) had to steady his mount when TERZILLA (S Maskiell) shifted wider on the track to improve his position.

TERZILLA (S Maskiell) shifted ground inwards over the concluding stages.

At approximately the 200 metres, MISS ENTREVEAUX (D Pires A) shifted wider on the track and in doing so carried SONAR DREAM (D Keating A) outwards.

SONAR DREAM (D Keating A) laid in in the home straight and had to be steadied off the heels of MISS ENTREVEAUX (D Pires A) at approximately the 150 metres.

RACE 3 - OUTRIGGER RESORT CAIRNS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected both MASTER SONAR (D Pires A) and BEER BARON (L Goodrick) prior to the start and passed both geldings fit to take their places with the field.

As the start was affected, GILT WINGS (W Hokai) threw its head in the air and as a result the gelding lost several lengths then raced ungenerously in the early and middle stage of the event.

EASY AS (C Burt) over-raced in the early stages.

At approximately the 450 metres, ROMANTIC SCORE (B McCoull) shifted wider on the track over the heels of ASA MAC (S McFerran) and made contact with EAST WEST (K Sanderson) carrying this gelding a little wider on the track.

On the turn near the 400 metres, EASY AS (C Burt) rolled out under pressure and in doing so inconvenienced ASA MAC (S McFerran).

In the home straight MOOFASTA (J Nevin A) shifted ground outwards under pressure despite the efforts of its rider and as a result ROMANTIC SCORE (B McCoull) had to be eased and switched to the inside of this gelding’s heels to obtain a clear run. MOOFASTA continued to race greenly and laid out over the concluding stages.

After the event, Stewards questioned Jockey S Maskiell on the apparent disappointing performance of CHATALOT. Jockey Maskiell reported that the filly travelled reasonably well until the 600 metre mark and when placed under pressure, failed to respond and in his opinion, the filly felt flat on the day. A subsequent veterinary inspection of CHATLOT failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the filly

On returning to scale, Jockey C Burt (EASY AS) reported that she eased her mount down over the concluding stages as she felt there was something amiss with the gelding. A subsequent veterinary inspection of EASY AS revealed the filly to have a poor heart rate recovery but no other obvious abnormalities.

On returning to scale, Jockey L Goodrick (BEER BARON) reported that she did not ride her mount out in her normal manner over the concluding stages as she felt there was something amiss with the gelding. A subsequent veterinary inspection of BEER BARON failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 4 - CARBINE CLUB TROPHY SUPERVOBIS - 3-Y-O CLASS 6 HANDICAP 9 RUNNERS

Trainer Charlie Goggin was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club’s colours on LA SUPREME.

The start of this race was delayed slightly when DREI (W Hokai) broke through the front of its barrier stall. This filly underwent a veterinary inspection and was passed fit to take its place with the field.

DENON (L Goodrick) was slow to muster early speed.

At approximately the 150 metres, IONACOLUMBA (B McCoull) laid in and bumped with MIDNIGHT BREW (J Nevin A).

LA SUPREME (S Maskiell) was inclined to lay in in the home straight resulting in Jockey S Maskiell being unable to ride his mount out in his normal manner.

RACE 5 - SIR TRISTRAM TROPHY 3-Y-O NO CLAIMS – 2100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Jockey D Parish was not shown in the race-book as the rider of HIGHSTRUNG. A public announcement was made to this effect.

After leaving the home straight on the first occasion, BIRLE’S GAMBLE (S Maskiell) began to over-race as the pace eased. As a result BIRLE’S GAMBLE had to switch over the heels of HIGHSTRUNG (D Parish) and carried NUVOLARI (J Nevin A) wider on the track and inconvenienced that colt for some distance.

At the 1200 metre, LORDS PLACE (K Sanderson) brushed with SQUIRE MOORE (S Tsaikos) causing him to shift ground outwards slightly.

BIRLE’S GAMBLE continued to over-race until the 1200 metre. At that stage Jockey Maskiell, when making a forward move around the outside of LORDS PLACE (K Sanderson), shifted in and tightened that gelding. Jockey Maskiell was reprimanded under AR-137(a) for allowing his mount to shift in.

Approaching the 900 metres, HIGHSTRUNG (D Parish) eased off the heels of JOHNY GUM ROL (B McCoull) as the pace eased and in doing so shifted out and crowded CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) causing that gelding to be steadied by its rider.

Over the concluding stages, CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of Jockey S Maskiell (BIRLE’S GAMBLE)

LYMINGTON (S McFerran) was held up over the concluding stages of the event.

NUVOLARI (J Nevin A) laid in under pressure in the run to the line.

BIRLE’S GAMBLE (S Maskiell) shifted ground outwards in the run to the finish.

A swab sample was taken from the third placegetter, LILAC SKY (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 6 - MICHAEL THE TAILOR HANDICAP - 1200 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

MATRIX HUNTER (D Parish) and CARRINGTON STAR (D Keating A) were both slow to begin.

METEOR MAN (NZ) (K Dodge) over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

Racing towards the 600 metres, VIDEO FLYER (C Kingston) shifted ground outwards to improve his position and in doing so carried PRIVATE STAR (W Hokai) and NOBLE SENSATION (B McCoull) wider on the track.

CARRINGTON STAR (D Keating A) was held up for a major part of the home straight when attempting to take a run between MATRIX HUNTER (D Parish) and METEOR MAN (NZ) (K Dodge) and as a result had to switch out to obtain a clear run close to the finish.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MATRIX HUTNER revealed the gelding to have bleeding from a small cut on its right hind fetlock, posterior aspect.

A swab sample was taken from the second place-getter VEIN EDITION, (Trainer David A Miller)

RACE 7 - NATIONAL HEART FOUNDATION SUMMER CUP - 2100 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

THE SPUNK (S Maskiell) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event.

OTAKIMAN (J Nevin A) laid in over the concluding stages.

CAITLIN’S HOPE (S Tsaikos) raced wide for the entire event.

Upon returning to scale, it was noted that US AND MAKA had blood trickling from its offside nostril. Upon inspection by the veterinary surgeon and interviewing Apprentice Keating, who stated that when the gelding was withdrawn from the incorrect barrier to be placed in its correct barrier, it became fractious and may have struck its head on the barrier structure. Acting on the veterinary surgeon’s information, it was established that this was not an exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage as there was no evidence of blood in the near side nostril. Trainer R Carr was advised that if the gelding’s condition were to change in the near future, he is to notify Stewards immediately.

RACE 8 - ST KILDA FOOTBALL CLUB CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1400 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

Jockey D Parish was not shown in the race-book as the rider of CANDLE IN THE WIND. A public announcement was made to this effect.

Correct weight for this event was withheld until it was established that FAST RIDE (S Tsaikos) was not disadvantaged at the start. After speaking with Jockey Tsaikos and viewing the official patrol films, it was established that when the gates opened, this mare drove her head to the ground and as a result was slow to begin.

CORINDHAP (J Nevin A) was slow to begin.

At approximately the 900 metres, CORINDHAP (J Nevin A) shifted in slightly, bumping with FAST RIDE (S Tsaikos).

Approaching the 700 metres, HOT AS (S Maskiell) was inclined to over-race and had to be restrained off the heels of LADY QUEST (B McCoull) who it was following.

Jockey S Snell (KONISHIKI) reported that his horse over-raced in the middle stages of the event.

GENERAL

Stewards concluded an inquiry into the incorrect gear used on ZARA’S CHOICE in Race 2 the Rosemount Chardonnay Maiden Plate at Elwick racecourse on Sunday, 5 January 2003 and charged Trainer Ray Worbey under LR-42 for not lodging a Stable Return to show correct gear. Mr Worbey was fined the sum of $25.

Stewards inquired into the reasons why Jockey S Snell was dually engaged on HIGHCLERE (Trainer Terence Evans) and NUVOLARI (Trainer Bill Ryan) for today’s fifth race. After accepting evidence from Jockey S Snell, Stewards found Jockey Snell guilty of a charged under AR-85(B) and fined him the sum of $50 for accepting rides on both HIGHCLERE and NUVOLARI.

Trainer Mr G E Blacker advised Stewards that Trainer Mr Troy Blacker will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his two runners at today’s race meeting.
