Oliver Hot Favourite for Medal

r6doliver.jpg (16282 bytes)Champion Melbourne jockey Damien Oliver is the hot favourite to win the Scobie Breasley Medal, to be presented at Flemington tonight.

Oliver, the Melbourne premiership winner for the season, is aiming to win his fourth medal since it was first presented in 1996.

Last year Oliver and Brett Prebble tied for the medal, one point ahead of Stephen Baster.

During the season, which ended on July 31, Oliver rode 91 winners to win his sixth premiership.

Oliver's main opposition tonight is expected to come from Brett Prebble, Kerrin McEvoy, Darren Gauci and Greg Childs.

Points were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis for the riders who gave the most polished displays at each metropolitan meeting by a panel of racing experts.

The jumps jockeys also get their chance for glory when the winner of the Tommy Corrigan medal is also presented.

That award is expected to be a two "jock" race between Brett Scott and Craig Durden.
