RACE 1: THE LES WILLMOTT – 1000M

After completing its preliminary FREAKY KONTIKI baulked when passing the barrier dislodging Jockey P. Knuckey, who took an apparent harmless fall. FREAKY KONTIKI then galloped approximately 600m and was subsequently withdrawn by the Stewards at 12.55 p.m. acting on Veterinary advice. All bets made on FREAKY KONTIKI (16/1) were refunded. Deductions from winning bets were made in accordance with the conditions set out in Betting Rule 19. AIR POCKET (W. Hughes) was unruly in the barrier and reared unsettling CORDEX (A. Sansom) and then commenced awkwardly. GONNA GET YOU (P. Farrell) dwelt at the start losing ground. MAHOOTA (D. Catarino) threw its head at the start, losing ground and then failed to stride out in the early stages and lost contact with the remainder of the field. When questioned regarding the performance of MAHOOTA, Jockey D. Catarino advised that the gelding lay inwards throughout. Trainer Mrs V. Lane was advised that MAHOOTA would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again. SWIM BYE (P. Black) and ELITE BUSINESS (T. Turner) bumped at the start. MINUTE (P. Harvey) shifted inwards approaching the 900m tightening CORDEX, which was steadied. MINUTE then continued inwards bumping the shoulder of AIR POCKET heavily, which became unbalanced. On Inquiry Jockey P. Harvey was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for causing this interference. In assessing a penalty Stewards took into account the degree of interference and Jockey Harvey’s good record in relation to careless riding and as such was suspended from riding in races for a period of 10 days from midnight 6 February, 2003 until midnight 16 February, 2003. At the 400m CORDEX brushed the running rail. PRETTY SMIK (D. Staeck) raced wide throughout. GONNA GET YOU raced greenly throughout and passing the 600m struck the running rail and became severely unbalanced inconveniencing ELITE BUSINESS. Trainer Mr P. Strange was advised that GONNA GET YOU would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again. THE MASKED MAN (M. Frethey) lay inwards in the straight. Near the 150m PURE EXCITEMENT (S. Parnham) veered outwards sharply. When questioned regarding this incident Apprentice S. Parnham stated that in his opinion PURE EXCITEMENT had raced greenly with no other runner in close proximity at this stage of the race and shifted ground quickly when struck with the whip. A post race Veterinary examination of PURE EXCITEMENT revealed the colt to have returned lame in the off fore. Trainer Mr G. Webster Snr was advised that PURE EXCITEMENT would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before racing or trialling again. Trainer Mr G. Webster Snr advised that he would have PURE EXCITEMENT fully vetted and following this would decide the immediate racing future of the colt. A post race Veterinary examination of AIR POCKET revealed nothing amiss.

RACE 2: THE WAVENET INTERNATIONAL – 1400M

Near the 650m SHE’S CAPTIVATING (Jason Brown) rolled inwards slightly, bumping DEDICATED MISS (Jason Miller). GLITZY SHOW (J. Albuino advised that TIME IS MONEY would now be sent for a brief let up and advised that she would race the mare over a decreased distance at its next start. When questioned regarding the poor performance of METAL MAIDEN, Jockey W. Arnold stated that METAL MAIDEN had a tendency to over race in the middle stages and after receiving a bump at the turn into the straight had failed to run on. Trainer Mr J. A post race Veterinary examination of MY TRUE CHOICE revealed no abnormalities.

Shortly after this BINDAREE BOY rolled inwards causing SAPPHIRE STAR to be impeded for several strides. When questioned to his reasons for remaining behind BINDAREE BOY approaching the 500m, Jockey P. Harvey (SAPPHIRE STAR) explained that he had commenced to shift outwards, however BINDAREE BOY rolled outwards as COMEBACK KID (J. Claite) commenced a quick forward move. As a result he was unable to improve his position at that point in the race and he then elected to attempt to gain a run to the inside of BINDAREE BOY, which he was unable to fill prior to BINDAREE BOY shifting ground inwards. Following the poor performance of CARGO, Trainer Mr G. Daly advised that he would now restrict the gelding’s immediate racing to midweek or provincial races. A post race Veterinary examination of HIROSAKI revealed no abnormalities. When questioned regarding the poor performance of HIROSAKI, Jockey T. Turner advised that he felt that the gelding may have got its tongue over the bit during running and for this reason he had not ridden HIROSAKI out fully in the straight. Trainer Mr C. Webster could offer no explanation for HIROSAKI’s poor performance. Trainer Mr C. Webster was advised that HIROSAKI would not be permitted to start in a race for a period of three weeks. Staeck (SUPER MOSS) and he explained that as the gelding had drawn a wide barrier, with the rail being out 12 metres, he considered SUPER MOSS would have been best suited racing in a rearward position. Young Western Australian apprentice Michael Molloy remains seriously ill in a Perth Hospital after a fall yesterday.

He was taken to the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital yesterday morning after suffering a trackwork fall at the Forrestdale property of leading trainer Fred Kersley, the trainer of the country's best horse Northerly.

Medicos were concerned with the 20-year-old's condition and placed him in an induced coma after he was found to be suffering severe head injuries and internal bleeding.

Kersley, who is the master of the young rider, was at a loss to explain who the fall occurred when quizzed by reporters last night.

He reported the horse Molloy was riding was "quiet" and the rider had taken all safety measures by wearing the mandatory riding helmet and safety vest.

A spokeswoman for the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital said Molloy's condition was listed as "critical." (As at 12noon AEST).
