RACE 1: THE SAN TOY – 1000M

Apprentice C. Harvey failed to arrive on course to fulfil his riding engagement on WITCHES BREW and consequently was replaced by Apprentice T. Ikenushi. Due to the late arrival of the St John Ambulance the field was delayed in leaving the mounting enclosure. AIR POCKET (W. Hughes) was unruly behind the barrier. Trainer Mr P. Jordan was advised to rectify the filly’s behaviour. ASK ME QUICK was extremely fractious at the barrier, kicking out on a number of occasions and was unable to be loaded into the barrier. ASK ME QUICK (13/2) was subsequently withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 1 p.m. All bets made on ASK ME QUICK were refunded. Deductions from winning bets were made in accordance with the conditions set out in Betting Rule 19. Trainer Mr N. Pascoe was advised that ASK ME QUICK would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again. These incidents necessitated a delay of five minutes to the start of this race. COSMIC PRIDE (P. Black) shifted inwards at the start bumping MAGIC PASS (D. Staeck). ETTAN (Danny Miller) dwelt at the start and then failed to stride out in the early stages losing considerable ground. A post race Veterinary examination of ETTAN revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr T. Mahood was advised that ETTAN would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again. COSMIC PRIDE over raced in the early stages and shifted ground quickly when racing greenly near the 700m. Near the 850m WITCHES BREW, which lay inwards, shifted inwards away from SHOUT FROM MAROOF (D. Randall) and bumped AIR POCKET (W. Hughes), which was racing keenly. AIR POCKET then shifted inwards momentarily crowding VIKING LASS (A. Sansom). AIR POCKET then continued to race keenly until approaching the 500m. At the 700m HIGH AUTHORITY (K. Forrester) shifted outwards away from AIR POCKET. MAGIC PASS raced wide at the turn into the straight. SHOUT FROM MAROOF lay outwards from the turn into the straight and then bore outwards over the final 150m. COSMIC PRIDE was held up for a short distance passing the 100m.

RACE 2: THE C.Y. O’CONNOR PIPELINE CENTENARY TRIBUTE – 1400M

DEAD EYE DICK (N. Chapman) blundered at the start. SURROUNDINGS (S. Parnham) dipped on jumping. T’SHOMBIE (D. O’Heare) commenced awkwardly losing ground. SHE’S MY DESTINY (A. Sansom) dwelt at the start. Shortly after the start RISCA FLIGHT (C. Harvey) shifted inwards bumping UNIVERSAL WARRIOR (Danny Miller). RISCA FLIGHT raced keenly in the early and middle stages. FIELD COMMANDER (T. Turner) raced wide in the early stages. Near the 1150m SHE’S MY DESTINY commenced to race fiercely when being settled back in the field and near the 1100m shifted outwards, to avoid the heels of SURROUNDINGS, forcing RISCA FLIGHT to race wide. SHE’S MY DESTINY then veered inwards at the 1000m cannoning into the shoulder of T’SHOMBIE, which became severely unbalanced. Shortly after this SHE’S MY DESTINY again bumped T’SHOMBIE and then shifted outwards near the 900m bumping FIELD COMMANDER. SHE’S MY DESTINY, was then steadied and bumped T’SHOMBIE heavily with that gelding becoming unbalanced, shifting outwards and steadying off the heels of FIELD COMMANDER. Due to the erratic racing manner of SHE’S MY DESTINY, Trainer Mr M. Pateman was advised that SHE’S MY DESTINY would have to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again. Approaching the 1200m SURROUNDINGS and CANAL (P. Knuckey) bumped. Near the 400m FIELD COMMANDER and CANAL bumped. A post race Veterinary examination of T’SHOMBIE revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr D. Morton advised that T’SHOMBIE would now be sent for a spell. UNIVERSAL WARRIOR raced wide throughout. SURROUNDINGS lay inwards in the straight and passing the 150m steadied from the heels of RISCA FLIGHT and bumped FIELD COMMANDER. SURROUNDINGS was then impeded for a short distance and passing the 50m was further impeded when RISCA FLIGHT shifted outwards. BONNIE BRAE (L. Camilleri) lay inwards over the final 225m and approaching the 200m crowded QUASAROCK (S. McGruddy) making slight contact with that gelding’s hindquarters. Passing the 150m DEAD EYE DICK had a tendency to lay inwards and passing the 100m mis-strode when struck with the whip.

RACE 3: THE SORRENTO – 1100M

TWIN CITY GIRL (T. Ikenushi) reared on several occasions when behind the barrier and then bounded at the start. After conferring with Apprentice T. Ikenushi, Trainer Mr C. Willis was of the opinion that the filly had resented the nose band, which it was wearing for the first time today. Trainer Mr C. Willis advised that he would now remove the nose band from TWIN CITY GIRL for future starts. AUNT KATIE (C. Suresh) was slow into stride. BANDOLERO (C. Harvey) raced wide in the early and middle stages. CZARTYSON (T. Turner) was buffeted at the 450m between AUNT KATIE and OUR MOONDANCER (A. Sansom). Jockey T. Turner (CZARTYSON) reported that the gelding appeared to resent racing inside other runners from the 600m. At the 300m AUNT KATIE, when taken outwards across the heels of BEFORE SUNRISE (S. McGruddy) to obtain a clear run, veered outwards becoming unbalanced for a short distance. SCENIC VISION (P. King) lay outwards at the turn into the straight having to be steadied from the heels of TRISTRAM’S GLORY (W. Arnold). VOLTAGE REIGN (D. Staeck), which was following, was inconvenienced. CZARTYSON had a tendency to lay inwards in the straight with Jockey T. Turner using his whip in his left hand. When questioned on the reasons for AUNT KATIE racing in a rearward position today as opposed to its previous performances of racing forward, Apprentice C. Suresh advised that the filly had been slow to begin and then with the pace of the race he had been unable to take up a forward position as instructed.

RACE 4: THE SWEET SAGA – 2200M

When behind the barrier THORNY ROSE (Stephen Miller) kicked out and struck SOUTHLAND HIGH on the off hock. A subsequent Veterinary examination of SOUTHLAND HIGH revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind and the gelding was subsequently withdrawn by the Stewards at 2.56 p.m. acting on Veterinary advice. All bets made on SOUTHLAND HIGH (33/1) were refunded with no other alterations to betting. THORNY ROSE proved difficult to load. Trainer Mr M. Miller was advised to rectify the mare’s barrier manner otherwise action may be taken against it. THORNY ROSE commenced awkwardly and then veered inwards bumping GILL’S DREAM (D. O’Heare). Near the 1350m THORNY ROSE, when racing keenly, got its head in the air for a short distance. GILL’S DREAM and KING ELVIS (L. Camilleri) raced wide from the 750m. Passing the 600m HONAMI (T. Turner) shifted outwards bumping KING ELVIS. Near the 400m UNO JACK (C. Harvey) rolled inwards inconveniencing MERLOS (S. McGruddy). When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MERLOS, Jockey S. McGruddy stated that after the gelding was tightened near the 400m it had lost momentum, thereby losing ground. Trainer Mr A. MacPherson stated that in his opinion MERLOS was not suited by racing to the inside of other runners and believed that the gelding is best suited when able to lead without being challenged. He further advised that in future he would instruct that the gelding is to lead and stride along from the 1000m. Further he stated that it was his intention to race MERLOS in the provincial area next Wednesday as the gelding had previously performed well when having raced inside a seven day period. A post race Veterinary examination of MERLOS revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 5: THE STARGLOW – 1500M

Due to OLD NICK (D. Randall) requiring a gear adjustment the horses were late in leaving the mounting enclosure resulting in a short delay to the start of this race. DASHING SCENE (T. Ikenushi) was slow into stride. ZOLOTO (C. Suresh) raced extremely fiercely, thereby leading by a considerable margin in the early and middle stages. DASHING SCENE raced wide from the 600m. COUNTRY BORN (P. King) and OLD NICK bumped at the 350m. Apprentice C. Suresh (ZOLOTTO) was questioned regarding the reason why the gelding had led today as compared to its previous starts. Apprentice Suresh stated that he was instructed to ride the gelding in a forward position and after beginning well ZOLOTO commenced to race fiercely with the saddle shifting forward slightly shortly after the start. Due to this he was unable to restrain ZOLOTO back to the field. Trainer Mr V. Brockman stated that in his opinion ZOLOTO was not suited by an apprentice rider and it was now his intention to engage a senior rider for future starts. Jockey P. Black (SAMURAI STAR) was asked to explain why SAMURAI STAR had raced off the pace today. Jockey Black stated that he had intended to position the gelding in a forward position however SAMURAI STAR was beaten for early pace and he therefore elected to settle the gelding off the pace. Trainer Mr C. Scoby-Smith was questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of MY TRUE CHOICE today as compared to its previous start at Ascot on 11 January, 2003 over 1400m. Mr Scoby-Smith stated that the mare was forced to race wide throughout at its previous start and had then tired in the straight. Today MY TRUE CHOICE had received a favourable passage throughout and was suited by the manner in which the race was run. Mr Scoby-Smith advised that he had varied the mare’s training with beach work for the last three weeks in an effort to improve its form, but was not confident that the mare would perform well today as it was somewhat inconsistent and due to this the connections had only supported the mare in a token fashion.

RACE 6: THE SPECIAL REWARD – 1600M

MONEY IS MAGIC (T. Turner) dwelt at the start losing several lengths. BULLA PROUD (P. King) pulled hard in the early and middle stages. Near the 1500m CLAN NOBLE (K. Forrester) steadied off the heels of THUNDER HAWK (D. Staeck), when that gelding shifted inwards. Passing the 1200m THUNDER HAWK rolled inwards causing IT’S A LEGEND (J. Noske) to steady. PARADIDDLE (S. Parnham) raced wide from the 1000m. Approaching the 500m BULLA PROUD (P. King) rolled inwards crowding CLAN NOBLE and when being steadied brushed the running rail. At the 450m BULLA PROUD shifted outwards bumping the tiring THUNDER HAWK which was obliged to steady off the heels of PARADIDDLE. PARADIDDLE and IT’S A LEGEND bumped passing the 300m. MONEY IS MAGIC lay outwards over the final 200m. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of PARADIDDLE Apprentice S. Parnham was of the opinion that the gelding may have got its tongue over the bit contributing to its unplaced performance. Trainer Mr N. Parnham advised that it was now his intention to make a gear change in an endeavour to rectify this problem. A post race Veterinary examination of PARADIDDLE revealed no abnormalities. Jockey D. Staeck was questioned regarding the poor performance of THUNDER HAWK and stated that the gelding had received a favourable run throughout, but had commenced to tire from the 700m. He further advised that THUNDER HAWK had made a respiratory noise during running. Trainer Mr F. Kersley advised that he would have THUNDER HAWK undergo an endoscopic examination and report any findings to the Stewards.

RACE 7: THE SOVEREIGN RED – 1400M

ARGENTINA (S. Parnham) was fractious in the barrier prior to the start and struck out with its hind legs. ARGENTINA was subsequently removed from the barrier and after undergoing a Veterinary examination was declared fit to start. POLIWHIRL (Stephen Miller) commenced awkwardly. Near the 1200m LAUNDER (D. Staeck) shifted inwards away from REAL STORM (K. Forrester) tightening GLITZY SHOW (N. Chapman) which was steadied and lost ground when NEAR TO TOD (J. Noske) shifted outwards after baulking from the running rail. Near the 600m KINGSTON BLAZE (A. Sansom), when over racing, threw its head in the air. GLITZY SHOW was held up for a clear run from the turn into the straight until passing the 200m. Near the 250m POLIWHIRL lay inwards making contact with REAL STORM which bumped KINGSTON BLAZE. Passing the 100m GLITZY SHOW was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of Jockey P. Knuckey (ABU DHABI). Near the 75m HIROSAKI (L. Camilleri) lay outwards carrying LAUNDER outwards bumping RUSTIC HERO (C. Itzstein). When questioned on the unplaced performance of REAL STORM, Jockey K. Forrester advised that the gelding had raced uncompetitively and that he had recommended to the connections that blinkers be fitted for future racing. Trainer Mr G. Durrant will be contacted to ascertain his intentions in this regard.

RACE 8: THE SCARPIA – 1200M

CAUSE FOR ENVY (C. Harvey) got its head down at the start and as a result lost several lengths. TRUE AND CORRECT (P. King) was slow into stride. CENTO (D. Staeck) over raced in the early stages and near the 950m was held tight by RICKITAVE (B. Mathieson). C’MON BLUEY (T. Ikenushi) raced wide throughout. WESTERN TYCOON (C. Staples) lay outwards throughout. Trainer Mr E. Martinovich advised that he would now remove the one eyed blinker from WESTERN TYCOON and that he would give consideration to having the gelding settled off the pace for future starts. TRUE AND CORRECT raced wide at the turn into the straight and lay inwards over the final 250m. Jockey J. Noske was questioned regarding his riding of HEAVY NOVA in the straight, in particular his reason for taking a run to the outside rather than the inside of CENTO. He explained that he had taken HEAVY NOVA to the outside of CENTO passing the 250m as he felt that DECISION TO GO (T. Turner), which was racing to his inside, was shifting outwards at this stage. He further stated that after committing HEAVY NOVA outside the heels of CENTO, that gelding had rolled outwards thereby impeding his mount for several strides near the 225m. In assessing this matter, Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey J. Noske had erred by not moving his mount to the inside of CENTO near the 225m, however were not satisfied that a charge under the Australian Rules of Racing could be substantiated.

GENERAL

Routine Specimens were taken from all winners.

Apprentice T. Ikenushi (MOON TALK) was questioned regarding the reason he relinquished the lead near the 600m. Apprentice Ikenushi advised that MOON TALK had over relaxed and he was unable to prevent KORDOSS, which had improved quickly from back in the field, from crossing to the lead. FIMMO’S MEMORY was held up for a clear run from the turn into the straight until passing the 200m. FIMMO’S MEMORY then shifted outwards from the heels of the tiring CORPORATE COCKTAIL (J. SUDETES raced greenly in the straight and near the 200m was steadied from the heels of the tiring EXTERMINATOR. A Veterinary inspection of EXTERMINATOR (W. Hughes) revealed the gelding returned suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mrs C. Stelmach was advised that EXTERMINATOR would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness prior to trialling and would have to trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before racing again. COUNTY ROAD (P. King) returned sore in the near fore. Trainer Mrs J. Busslinger was advised that COUNTY ROAD would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before racing or trialling again.

Approaching the 400m MISS COPYCAT (P. King), when racing keenly, had to be steadied off the heels of POPULAR PRINCE (P. Hall) when that gelding shifted inwards. MISS COPYCAT had difficulty obtaining a clear run between the 250m and the 150m and when taken to the inside of PRICE SENSITIVE (J. Hustwitt) commenced to lay inwards, bumping with RARE SPICE (S. Parnham) over the final 50m and then having to be restrained near the 25m. Near the 75m DUKE MANTEE was struck over the head by the whip of Apprentice T. Ikenushi (KYLIE NADINE). When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of IPARRPE, Trainer Mr M. Dacqui was of the opinion that the gelding was unsuited by the distance of today’s race and he would now restrict IPARRPE to races over a shorter distance.

McGruddy), which then shifted outwards making contact with ROYAL CRIMSON, forcing that mare to race wide over the final 600m. SHOOTERS ALL ROUND was then impeded behind the riderless FINAL AFFAIR until the turn into the straight. Following the running of this race Apprentice S. Parnham was examined by the Club’s Medical Officer and declared fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements.

A Veterinary examination of the poorly performed HAPPY PATCH revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr M. Dillon was at a loss to explain the disappointing run of the mare today.
