Tovey advised that in previous races the gelding had found it difficult to muster sufficient early pace to obtain a forward position. He had assessed this race as being devoid of pace and that assessment, together with the increase in distance, suggested that TRUE SAINT may have been able to race in a forward position and he had instructed his rider accordingly. When questioned on his riding of GILL’S DREAM, Jockey D. O’Heare explained that the mare would not have been suited by either racing in a forward position or going wide in the middle stages. He had therefore elected to ride the mare in a manner to take advantage of her strong finish.

Hughes) was taken outwards in an effort to obtain clear running bumping SPICE MISS outwards causing that filly to be restrained off the heels of BULWARK which had lay inwards slightly. On Inquiry it was established that HALOPAK had endeavoured to take a marginal run at the same time as RUSSIAN SPIRIT shifted outwards slightly when tiring. Given all the circumstances Stewards were unable to blame any one rider however advised Apprentice W. Hughes to ensure that there is adequate racing room when attempting to make ground inside other runners. A post race Veterinary examination of the poorly performed THORIUM revealed no abnormalities. Near the 200m AMUSEY was held up and had to be taken outwards to obtain clear running. When questioned regarding the unplaced performance of SUSHI GIRL, Jockey R. Quartermaine advised that the filly had not jumped as well as expected and as such was caught racing wide and then under pressure from the 400m. Trainer Mr R. Cowl (Jnr) was at a loss to explain the performance other than to advise that the mare may have been coming into season, which was confirmed when examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon.

RACE 2: GUARDIAN PRINT MAIDEN – 1300M

Upon weighing in Apprentice J. Roesler (LADY SYLPHIDE) was found to be in excess of 0.5 kg under her declared weight. Acting under the provisions of ARR.143 Stewards called for the bridle and Apprentice J. Roesler failed to make the correct weight and subsequently LADY SYLPHIDE was disqualified from the race. On Inquiry there was no explanation offered for Apprentice J. Roesler being under weight and no further action was taken. MONICA LOVESKY (A. Ng) jumped awkwardly. PRICE SENSITIVE (D. Tourneur) and SPANISH DANCE (J. Pouillet) bumped at the start. SIMSTAR BAY (K. Chin) was crowded on jumping between KEFALOS (R. Quartermaine) and MONICA LOVESKY. Approaching the 1000m SIMSTAR BAY, when racing keenly, had to steady off the heels of DAME NOIRE (C. Farrell) and shifted outwards causing KEFALOS (R. Quartermaine) to strike the heels of that mare and blunder. Near the 900m BRAESIDE BULLET (K. Gladwin) had to steady when close to the heels of PRICE SENSITIVE. Passing the 500m KEFALOS had to steady when SPANISH DANCE shifted inwards and PRICE SENSITIVE shifted outwards.

All bets on ROTTERDAM were refunded. Deductions from winning bets were made in accordance with the conditions set out in Betting Rule 19. When questioned regarding the soundness of ROTTERDAM, Trainer Mr D. McAuliffe was of the opinion that the gelding may have bruised its hoof whilst alighting from the float. Mr McAuliffe advised that he had walked the horse considerably prior to the race and that he had no concerns with the geldings soundness. Trainer Mr D. McAuliffe was advised that ROTTERDAM would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before racing or trialling again. FRENCH BEAUTY jumped awkwardly. Shortly after the start GOLD PARK (K. RACE 2: BETTER HEALTH MAIDEN – 1400M

Routine Specimens were taken from the winner MOTOR MICK (W. Pike). BAY REWARD (P. Hall) and AEROLITH (N. Hopwood) were slow into stride. SIRIUS DANCER (D. Skerrett) threw its head in the air on jumping, losing ground. Jockey J. Hustwitt and Trainer Mr D. Couper were questioned regarding the reason for ALWAYS READY racing in a forward position today, compared to racing in a rearward position at it’s last start at Esperance on 26 December, 2002. Jockey J. Hustwitt stated that he had been instructed by the trainer to lead today. He further stated that whilst the two leaders had made a considerable break on the remainder of the field, he did not believe they had gone hard early, however ALWAYS READY had commenced to tire passing the 600m. Trainer Mr D. Couper stated that ALWAYS READY was not suited to the shorter distance of his previous start and combined with interference received at the start, had resulted in the gelding racing further back than anticipated. Whilst he had instructed Jockey Hustwitt to lead today, he did not expect the horses to go so hard early. He believed that ALWAYS READY might have been better suited taking a sit on the pace. Mr Couper further stated that ALWAYS READY would now be retired from racing. Jockey J. Hustwitt was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to show more initiative.
