The exceptional recent form of classy middle distance performer Blevvo peaked in Perth on Saturday evening when he scored a high class win in the Group One Fruit ‘n’ Veg Stakes at Ascot.

After jumping out of the barriers in good style leading local rider Peter Farrell sent the Blevic gelding to the front and despite being tackled for the lead in the middle stages of the race, the gelding defied a swag of late challenges to win.

The Group One triumph was Blevvo’s sixth straight win and the first at racing’s elite level for his Victoria Derby winning sire.

Not only has the David Harrison trained Blevvo won his past six straight races, but his last three have all been in stakes class during the Perth Summer Carnival.

A jubilant Harrison said the gelding would be sent for a well deserved spell.

"He’s going out straight away for a spell," Harrison said. "The Fruit ‘n’ Veg was about the 12th run this preparation for him. He’s certainly earned the break."

Owned by long time clients Kim and Sue Sears, Blevvo was always destined to lead in the 1800 metre feature event.

"It was the greatest thrill of my training career," Harrison said of his first Group One win.

The boom three-year-old Hardrada was sent out a hot odds on favourite and had every chance after a perfect run just behind the leaders, but he was unable to get near Blevvo as he responded valiantly up the home straight.

On the line Blevvo, was started incredibly at 25/1, hung on to down Finito (9/1) by a short head, while the oldtimer Corporate Bruce (12/1) made up ground to finish third, a further neck back.

Blevvo, the first Group One winner for the Kambula Stud based Victoria Derby winner Blevic, is out of the former top producing South Australian based broodmare Carenel. On the track Carenel won three races as a two-year-old

As a yearling Blevvo was knocked down to leading Perth based bloodstock agent John Chalmers for $70,000 at the Adelaide Yearling Sale at Morphettville.

As well as Blevvo, Carenel is the dam of the Swettenham Stud Stakes winner True Spirit and fellow stakes performers Arakazar and Spirit of Hope. She is the dam of nine named foals and all are winners.

The gelding’s breeders Garry and Carolyn Busch from Port Lincoln were delighted with the win and had received congratulatory calls from around the Peninsula during the hours after the win.

"It was a great win and a great thrill," Garry Busch said.

"Carenel was a great mare for us and now he have her daughters to breed with," Busch added.

Garry and Carolyn’s future breeding success lies with Carenel’s high class daughters True Blue Spirit, True Spirit and Arakazar. All three mares have yearlings in February’s Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale at Morphettville.

Among the three offerings will be a three quarter brother to yesterday’s Group One hero by Blevic from the former stakes performed mare True Spirit.

"That horse is part owned by Peter Toole who has helped us right through our breeding pursuits," Busch said.
