LATE REPORT

Belmont Park, Wednesday 25 September, 2002 – Race 4. The Candle Classic (1300m)

The adjourned Inquiry into the riding of UNCLE BRIAN in the above race was concluded. Trainer Mr R. McPherson stated that although he expected UNCLE BRIAN to lead, the gelding was having its first start over 1300m and for this reason he advised Jockey N. Chapman to allow the gelding to relax in the early stages and settle it off the pace if possible. Mr McPherson agreed with Jockey Chapman’s comments that UNCLE BRIAN commenced to race very fiercely after being crossed by MISS BELHUS passing the 1000m. He stated that UNCLE BRIAN was a difficult horse to ride and was satisfied that Jockey Chapman had carried out his instructions. Mr McPherson advised that he would trial UNCLE BRIAN in blinkers to assess whether the gelding’s racing manner would improve sufficiently to race the gelding at its next start with the addition of that gear. No action was taken against Jockey Chapman, however he was informed that in the opinion of the Stewards he had not used his initiative to retain the lead in the early stages.
