Perth Apprentice Disqualified

Perth apprentice Duncan Miller has been disqualified for 12 months at the conclusion of an inquiry into his use of a whip weighted with lead.

After four hearings of the inquiry which began on October 3, stewards found Miller guilty of two charges on Monday of using the modified padded whip between August 1 and October 3.

Miller pleaded not guilty to both charges.

In determining the penalty, stewards took into account the seriousness of the charges, the damage to the image of racing and horse welfare.

Along with restrictions on their use, the lighter padded whips were introduced on August 1 to lessen the impact on horses.
