RACE 3: PILBARA MANGANESE HANDICAP – 1400M

Whilst behind the barriers, a number of riders and their gear were inspected and all was found to be in order. Routine Specimens were taken from the winner YAZZMAR (P. Farrell). Near the 1100m LORRADAUX (B. Sheehy) rolled inwards carrying ASK THE CHIEF (A. Armes) in, tightening RUSSIAN GEM (G. Lemos) onto PURE JADE (P. Black) which restrained. On inquiry, it was established that LORRADAUX shifted inwards. However, Stewards were of the opinion that PRO MISS (D. Grenfell), which lost ground at this stage, had contributed to the incident. Apprentice B. Sheehy was advised to make every effort to keep her mounts straight in future. SANTANN (B. Ball) raced wide at the turn into the straight.

RACE 4: QANTAS CLASS TWO – 1200M

ALWAYS READY (W. Pike) was slow into stride. Near the 200m PERSIAN QUEEN (A. Armes) rolled inwards causing OUTPOST (B. Ball) to momentarily ease. Jockey A. Armes (PERSIAN QUEEN) was reminded of her obligation to ride her mounts out fully to the end of the race.

RACE 5: RICHARDSON/EARTHEX SPRINT – 1200M

Routine Specimens were taken from the winner THINK SAFE (G. Gibbs). THINK SAFE and DEVIL’S SPEED (J. Lemon) bumped on several occasions near the 300m. LOVE IT HOT (B. Ball) raced wide over the final 400m.

RACE 6: SWAN BREWERY PILBARA MANGANESE PORT HEDLAND CUP – 2200M

Routine Specimens were taken from the winner NIGHT WATCHMAN (P. Farrell). VOODOO RAVER (D. Catarino) threw its head on jumping, losing ground. JOHNNY COME LATELY (A. Armes) pulled hard in the early and middle stages. Passing the 1700m CHANGING THE GUARD (G. Lemos) rolled inwards, striking the running rail and suffered a minor laceration to the near flank. CHANGING THE GUARD shifted outwards at the turn into the straight to obtain a clear run. A post race veterinary examination of POETIC TRYST (D. Grenfell) revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore. Trainer Mr B. Keys was advised that POETIC TRYST would require a Veterinary Certificate of Soundness before racing again.

RACE 7: B.H.P. IRON ORE HANDICAP – 1400M

GOLD PARK (G. Lemos) was slow into stride. At the 475m SPEED SHOT (B. Sheehy) and FIELDWORKS (B. Ball) buffeted for a short distance. At the turn into the straight, CORPORATE NEPTUNE (P. Farrell) was blocked for a run and when shifting out bumped SPEED SHOT, which had a tendency to lay inwards. Near the 300m YAMUNINDI (G. Gibbs) when struck with the whip, veered in quickly, causing REVYAT (D. Grenfell) to steady. Jockey G. Gibbs (YAMUNINDI) was shown a film of the incident and advised to straighten his mounts more quickly in future.

GENERAL:

During a routine breath analysis conducted by West Australian Turf Club Investigator Mr P. O’Reilly, Jockey G. Cortes was found to have a blood alcohol level in excess of .02.
