AlcopopAlcopop will make a low-key return to racing at Morphettville on Saturday as he prepares for a Melbourne campaign aimed at next month's $1 million Australian Cup.

The Jeune six-year-old will run in the Flying Hcp (1200m) in which he was weighted to carry 62kg but will be ridden by in-form Ballarat-based apprentice Jacob Rule who claims 3kg in the metropolitan area.

The Jake Stephens-trained gelding won a 900m barrier trial at Murray Bridge last Friday.

"He's aimed towards the Australian Cup and I'm not sure if he can win over 1200 metres," Stephens said.

"The trial win puts him in good stead but with age he is a little bit more dour now.

"Hopefully he'll still have that turn of foot over a trip but regarding Saturday I'll wait and see.

"He's eating well, is in good fettle and holding his condition well."

Stephens said Alcopop would probably go to the Group Two St George Stakes (1800m) second-up at Caulfield on February 26 on his way to the Group One Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 12.

Alcopop returned to the height of the form that led to him being sent out favourite in the 2009 Melbourne Cup, in which he finished sixth to Shocking, when a "career best" second to So You Think in the Group One Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield three starts back.

However he was thwarted by the outside barrier and a heavy track when 11th to Descarado in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and was spelled after failing behind Maluckyday in The Lexus (2500m) at Flemington.

"He didn't have much luck over the spring and the (bad) barrier draw and the wet (track) in the Caulfield Cup put an end to his preparation really," Stephens said.

"He's shaped up nicely so far this time in and he looks sensational so we'll see how he goes on Saturday."

Alcopop's autumn campaign last year was aborted after two failures in Sydney when he was found to have a virus which caused lung problems, but Stephens said he had fully recovered.

He said that even though Alcopop had won up to 2400m in the 2009 Herbert Power Stakes, in retrospect he would have preferred to have missed last year's Caulfield Cup and run him in the Cox Stakes.

"He did show a lot of brilliance running second to So You Think at weight-for-age over the 2000 metres," he said.

CapecoverThe Adelaide Cup will retain its March date with Premier Mike Rann rejecting calls to return the race and its public holiday to its former date in May.

Thoroughbred Racing SA wants to ditch the second Monday in March date as the event has struggled to compete due to the raft of high profile festival events in South Australia during that month.

The Adelaide Cup was moved to March in 2006 because crowds were impacted by bad weather in May.

However Rann says the date won't be moved again.

"Cabinet has just met and we have resolved not to change the Adelaide Cup holiday," the premier said on Monday.

"That was a once off change."

"The disruptive effect of changing it again is too much."

People like having the holiday during March, when Adelaide hosts Clipsal 500, the Fringe Festival, the Adelaide Arts Festival every second year, and the Womad music festival, he said.

"It fits in with the Mad March of events," Rann said.
