The answer to a string of below-par efforts from Adelaide metropolitan winner Fantastic Beau may have been found.

Trained by David Balfour at Morphettville, Fantastic Beau won at Oakbank in April and Morphettville in May but has failed to flatter in five starts since.

The six-year-old gelding returned from a 22 week spell on December 22 at Morphettville but only managed to beat one runner home on that occasion after being eased out of the event by Paul Gatt.

Subsequent X-rays revealed a hairline fracture of the off hind leg.

Balfour has since advised TRSA stewards of his intention to spell Fantastic Beau, with his career record standing at 33 starts for 5 wins and 6 placings and prizemoney in excess of $65,000.

Miss Chases Maiden Stakes Success

Miss With AttitudeTrainer Leon Macdonald believes his mare Miss With Attitude can claim her first stakes victory in tomorrow’s $80,000 Listed PD Excavations Christmas Handicap (1400m) at Morphettville Parks.

Miss With Attitude has raced 19 times for four wins but a win in stakes company has so far proved elusive with the four-year-old only boasting four minor placings from 12 starts.

“She went up to Brisbane for the carnival and she failed,” Macdonald said.

“She needed a bit of time to get over that and she’s come back well.”

Due to her unsuccessful three start stint in Queensland – where the highlight was a seventh placing in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) – Miss With Attitude has been restricted to races in Adelaide where she has figured in the finish at her past two outings.

“She has got a very good first-up record and when she won first-up there wasn’t a lot around.”

“So I said to connections that we should keep her fresh with the Christmas Handicap in mind.

“She had to have a run in between so she ran in the City Of Marion (Stakes) and she found the 1200 metres too short,” Macdonald said referring to her last start third placing behind About Ready.

“She’ll be suited on the Morphettville Parks track over 1400 metres,” he added.

Claire Lindop returns from a six meeting suspension tomorrow and will ride the daughter of Galileo who jumps from barrier 13.

Locusts Hit SA Meeting

Officials have been forced to abandon a public holiday race meeting in regional South Australia because of a locust plague.

The Murray Bridge Racing Club fixture fell victim to a swarm of locusts at the 11th hour on Monday.

"There is a reasonable infestation although it is mostly confined to small pockets of the racetrack," secretary-manager John Buhagiar said.

"Two sections of the course proper have been affected but the area near the 600-metre mark was of most concern.

"In the end it came down to a safety issue."

The extent of the plague wasn't obvious until an increase in temperature on Monday morning.

"In the cool of the day the locusts aren't very active," Buhagiar said.

"But when there was a bit of sunlight and heat, the locusts took to the wing and it was obvious there would be a problem."

The locust plague which has hit the southern parts of Australia has been described as the nation's biggest in 75 years.

It has forced scheduling changes to South Australian and Victorian racing during the past month.

With advance warning, South Australian officials recently transferred a Gawler fixture to Morphettville in Adelaide.

In what was reported as a first for Victorian racing, officials recently switched a meeting in the state's west when a swarm descended on the Donald racetrack.

Murray Bridge has another meeting on January 12 with Buhagiar confident it will go ahead.

"We have implemented a spraying program and the good thing is the locusts don't seem to be the voracious type, they're not eating everything," he said.

"There's no way the course proper is at risk of being damaged."
