Lye (LORENZO) was severely reprimanded under AR144 for failing to present herself at scale after finishing in fourth place. When questioned regarding the improved performance of TOP HOLE Trainer Mr A. Dykes could offer no tangible explanation other than it was the horse’s fourth run this time in and that the horse had benefited from recent racing. He added that he was quite satisfied with the gelding’s previous start at Canberra and said that TOP HOLE had worked well during the week. He was informed that, as TOP HOLE had now found form, the Stewards would expect the gelding to race with some consistency. P. Robl replaced N. Souquet as the rider of SO YOU SAY. Trainer Mrs. B. Joseph was fined $50 under AR140B, for presenting DUKEBOX in the mounting yard with other than it’s approved gear. SNOWSLIP blundered noticeably on jumping. DUKEBOX was slow to begin and then raced wide throughout. JOE’S SOLUTION hung out throughout. J. Ford (SNOWSLIP), explained his mount hung out on the home turn and after straightening he became concerned with the gelding’s action and therefore he did not unduly pressure SNOWSLIP over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of SNOWSLIP found that horse to have knocked out a front tooth, to have a laceration to the off hind coronet band and to be slightly lame in the near fore. Trainer Mr. J De Smet was advised a veterinary clearance would be required before SNOWSLIP would be permitted to race again. When questioned regarding NEAT WORK racing in the lead today as opposed to it’s only previous start when in settled worse than mid field, rider M Hanneybel stated he had been instructed to attempt to find the rail and endeavor to obtain cover. He added after beginning well he was able to cross the field and with the addition of blinkers today his mount refused to settle and went much harder than he had anticipated. His explanations were accepted.

RACE 5: CLASS ONE HANDICAP            1600M

CASUAL RELIEF was slow to begin. Shortly after the start SIMPSON DESERT, CHISUM and ICASON bumped heavily resulting in CHISUM becoming very unbalanced and shifting out abruptly. This resulted in ICASON (N. Souquet) shifting out, carrying LORD INTREPID out onto TIGER’S NANNY which in turn was carried out onto PATIENT PLANET, which was carried out across the running of CASUAL RELIEF, which clipped heels, blundered badly and lost considerable ground. As Stewards were of the view that N. Souquet had made every effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground no action was taken.  SINGA BETINA raced wide throughout. On return to scale Mr. R Jarrett, trainer of the second place getter, EMGEE REX, requested to view the official Stewards films with a view to lodging an objection against LIGOLD being declared the winner. After viewing the films Mr. Jarrett lodged an objection alleging interference after the 300 metres. The evidence before the Stewards found that near the 200 metres LIGOLD shifted ground inwards and bumped EMGEE REX. After considering all of the evidence and taking into account the manner in which both horses went to the line, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had this interference not occurred EMGEE REX would have finished in front of LIGOLD and therefore the objection was dismissed. TIGER’S NANNY and SINGA BETINA bled for the first time during the event and as such both horses are barred from racing for three months under the provisions of AR53A.

When questioned regarding ANGEL FISH racing back in the field today, Apprentice T Clark stated, he was instructed to race in a handy position but his mount was very touchy in the mouth and threw its head up after the start. He added shortly after the start, he was crossed by MUSICAL BEAT and as a result he settled further back than he had anticipated but stated his mount found the line well and may now be looking for more ground. Trainer Mr. B Howlett confirmed the instructions given and added the mare had a history of losing ground at the start due to it being very light in the mouth. He added the fast pace in today’s event was also a factor in ANGEL FISH getting back in the field and offered the opinion the mare had found the line well once clear in the straight. J. Whitney explained LACRISTI traveled well until straightening, where once placed under pressure it failed to run on. He added he had advised connections, in his opinion the gelding had felt flat and raced like a tired horse. A veterinary examination of LACRISTI found that horse to be mildly dehydrated.

When questioned on the performance of GLASOS W. Pearson stated that he was instructed to race in a forward position but, after being slow into stride, the gelding raced further back than anticipated. He added that, when attempting to improve around runners from the 700 metres, GLASOS hung out noticeably and again shifted out on several occasions under pressure in the straight proving very difficult to ride out. Trainer Mr S. Hill confirmed the instructions and could offer no tangible explanation for today’s performance. He added that, while he had not supported GLASOS himself, connections had supported the gelding in a similar manner to its previous starts. A veterinary examination of GLASOS found a healing ulcer on the right side of the mouth and also found that horse to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr. S. When questioned as to the reason LIGHTNING MITCHELL raced in a rearward position today after leading and winning at Wagga at its previous start on 19 February 2004 A. Bloomfield stated that his instructions today were to go forward. He added that he initially rode his mount along out of the barriers but when he was crossed by INTEMPERATE he elected to steady and shift in towards the rear of the field to avoid covering excessive ground. He then stated that the pace steadied in the middle stages of the event and LIGHTNING MITCHELL then commenced to overrace for the remainder of the event. Trainer Mr A. Bourke confirmed the instructions and expressed some disappointment in how far back LIGHTNING MITCHELL had settled. In severely reprimanding A. Bloomfield under AR135(b) Stewards advised him that in their opinion his ride lacked judgment and initiative and they felt he should have made a greater effort to ride to instructions and should have attempted to push forward early.

A. Layt replaced S. Pawsey as the rider of SOUTHERN AIR. SOUTHERN AIR was severely checked and lost ground when crowded on jumping by HURRIBY, which began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly. A. Layt (SOUTHERN AIR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 1900 metres he did permit his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of POP CIRA which was checked and lost running to which it was entitled. A. Layt’s licence to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday 21 April 2004 and to expire on Wednesday 28 April 2004, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account A. Layt’s guilty plea and good recent riding record. When questioned on the performance of TAVERN P. Robl stated that his mount was unusually agitated behind the barriers and commenced to overrace shortly after the start and, for this reason, he felt that the gelding had not run out the distance of today’s event. A veterinary examination of TAVERN did not detect any abnormalities.

J. Penza replaced J. Nisbet as the rider of SIR RUSSKI. P. Ferris replaced S. Pawsey as the rider of INTEMPERATE. INTEMPERATE and QUEEN OF SHAMROCK were slow to begin. AMBER LIQUID was crowded on jumping between PRINCESS DANI and SPANKY. After the 1000 metres AMBER LIQUID commenced to overrace and hung out noticeably carrying INTEMPERATE and PAPA’S PIONEER wider on the track. Then for some distance approaching the 800 metres AMBER LIQUID, whilst overracing, checked away from the heels of PRINCESS DANI which shifted out abruptly. INTEMPERATE shifted out abruptly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SODA WATER and inconvenienced PAPA’S PIONEER, which was then obliged to race wide throughout. Approaching the home turn AMBER LIQUID was held up and unable to improve when racing behind PRINCESS DANI and to the inside of INTEMPERATE. AMBER LIQUID had difficulty obtaining clear running over the final 300 metres and, as a result, went to the line without being fully tested. A veterinary examination of AMBER LIQUID revealed that horse had returned with lacerations to the nearside fore and offside hind. A veterinary examination of GALWAY GREY did not detect any abnormalities. A veterinary examination of DANE SPIRIT found that horse to have an acute respiratory disturbance. Trainer Mr R. Cantrell was advised that before the horse would be permitted to race again it would require a veterinary certificate of fitness, including the results of an endoscopic examination.

Approaching the 200 metres MOVILLE EDDIE was steadied away from the heels of MORTADELLA, which shifted out whilst racing greenly. M. A. Cahill stated that SANSADEE had a torrid run throughout, was trapped wide for most of the journey and under the filly’s big weight it failed to find the line. Trainer Mr B. Howlett could offer no explanation for SANSADEE’S performance but added that it was his intention to continue with the filly’s preparation provided SANSADEE pulled up well after today’s run. Mr Howlett undertook to advise Stewards should anything come to his attention regarding the post-race condition of SANSADEE. A veterinary examination of SANSADEE did not detect any abnormalities. A veterinary examination of MAN OF WOOD found that horse to have an elevated heart rate.

The start of this event was delayed by approximately seven minutes when UGLY JUGGLY was unable to be loaded and WIMBLEDON proved difficult to load. Subsequently UGLY JUGGLY was withdrawn by Stewards at 5.34pm who further ordered that all monies invested on UGLY JUGGLY be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 5.34pm be paid less deductions of 23 cents win, 18 cents place and 45 cents quinella on the face value of the ticket. Ms F Murphy, representing trainer Mr. A Stapleford was advised that UGLY JUGGLY must barrier trial to the Stewards satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again. Trainer Mr. R Boljun was fined $50 under LR35 for the late declaration of B Elissa as the rider of MISSILE SAM. KABLAMMO was slow to begin. C. Newitt explained he had been instructed not to go wide on KABLAMMO as the trainer feared being forced excessively wide on the home turn and also he did not want the gelding to be caught racing in what the trainer believed to be an inferior section of the track approximately 8 to 10 horses off the fence bearing in mind the big weight allotted to the gelding. He added that approaching the 200 metres he had the choice of runs to the inside and outside of JIVAGO and in keeping with his instructions he elected to shift inside where he was momentarily held up on the heels of INFLATION before securing an uninterrupted run to the line. He added after initially sprinting quickly he believed KABLAMMO then ground to the line and in his opinion was now looking for a longer distance. Trainer Mr. D Williams confirmed the instructions given and expressed satisfaction with C. Newitt’s ride on KABLAMMO although he felt with the benefit of hindsight he may have erred in shifting in near the 200 metres. The explanations were accepted.

Stewards considered a request from Trainer Mr. R Boljun, to replace M Schmetzer as the rider of CAFU with J. Nisbet, due to a dispute between M Schmetzer and himself. Stewards agreed to the substitution but ruled that M Schmetzer would be entitled to a losing ride fee. Shortly after the start STAY ALL NIGHT was crowded between COLOUR THERAPY and APOSTASY. Buckley (SOUTHERN AIR) explained he traveled in an advantageous position but when placed under pressure from the 700 metres the gelding failed to run on and in his opinion had disappointed. A veterinary examination of SOUTHERN AIR did not detect any abnormalities. When questioned, N Souquet (GO VOLARE), stated from a wide draw he was caught deep in the early stages and he therefore elected to push forward. He added when he went forward, runners to his inside improved and he was then posted wide throughout. He further stated the gelding struck a shifting patch of ground near the home turn and failed to find the line. A post race veterinary examination of GO VOLARE found it to have a mildly elevated heart rate.

Trainer Mr. B Howlett was reprimanded for the slightly late withdrawal of DUMARESQ. A. Bloomfield replaced M. Schmetzer (overweight) as the rider of COLDAZZ. At a subsequent inquiry M. Schmetzer pleaded guilty to charge under AR175 (a) in that he did weigh out without a girth in an attempt to deceive the Clerk of Scales and make the allotted weight. M. Schmetzer was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday 11th April 2004 and to expire on Thursday 6th May 2004, on which day he may ride. AFFLICTION was slow to begin. An inquiry into the reason KING SIAM was checked near the 800 metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed, to allow J. Nisbet to be present.  Near the 300 metres KING SIAM collapsed after suffering a massive bleeding attack. It was subsequently euthenased. Rider J. Nisbet suffered an injury to the left shoulder and was stood down from his remaining rides. On return to scale, Mr. D. Bailey, the trainer of GOLD WORKS (third) lodged an objection against AFFLICTION (App W. Pearson) being declared the winner alleging interference after the 300 metres. The evidence revealed that after the 300 metres AFFLICTION shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip, making heavy contact with GOLD WORKS, causing GOLD WORKS to become unbalanced and lose some ground. After considering all evidence and taking into account the manner in which both horses went to the line, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had this interference not occurred GOLD WORKS would have beaten AFFLICTION to the line and the objection was therefore dismissed. As the Stewards were satisfied that Apprentice W. Pearson had reacted and attempted to straighten his mount as soon as possible, no direct action was taken against him.

Lunn was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Tuesday 13th April 2004 on which day he may ride. Approaching the 800 metres SIMPSON DESERT was checked when it ran up onto the heels of BALLY TIGER (R. Stewart), which steadied after reaching the lead. When questioned regarding the pace set in the early stages of the event S. Pawsey (APPERTAIN), stated he was under specific instructions to lead and after being slightly slow to begin he rode his mount hard to endeavor to take up a leading position but he was unable to cross CALHOUN, which was racing to his inside. Trainer Mr. J Morrisey confirmed the instruction given but felt they may have been overdone to a certain extent as he was surprised to see APPERTAIN ridden out with the whip in the early stages. The explanations were noted.
