r1gaiwaterhouse.jpg (8832 bytes)Gai Waterhouse has made the best possible start in her quest to again dominate the feature events of the Newcastle Cup Carnival after she provided the quinella in this afternoon’s $126,100 listed Hunter Star Motors Cameron Handicap.

Former top two-year-old Excellerator edged out his staying stablemate Hey Pronto in a thrilling finish to the 1400 metre event.

When asked before the race by Sky Channel’s Jo McKinnon, Waterhouse, in her usual confident manner, declared she would take the quinella with her two runners – and how right she was!

The daughter of former Hall of Fame trainer Tommy Smith indicated both would again be hard to beat in the upcoming Group One Epsom Handicap.

"They way they are going, they’ll probably quinella the Epsom too," an excited Waterhouse said after the race.

Waterhouse said Hey Pronto, who has having his first start since finishing on the placegetters hells in the Doomben Cup, was a real Caulfield Cup chance.

"He’s (Hey Pronto) come from second last on the turn," the record breaking trainer said. "And then the winner (Excellerator) missed the start, so they have both done a great job."

But for Excellerator is was a great return to the winner’s stall after a strong first up sixth in the recent Concorde Stakes.

"It’s great to see him back to something like his good days when he was two," Waterhouse added. "He’s a very professional galloper."

While the Waterhouse pair fought it out for the major end of the prize, the John Hawkes trained Mowerman finished third.

Epsom Handicap aspirations for the promising Bart Cummings trained galloper Cognac Trader disintegrated when he failed to run a place, and it was then revealed he'd suffered a bleeding attack and has subsequently been banned for three months.

Despite not having started for about 18 months the former Group placed Melbourne performer Sort it Out broke his maiden status in a fighting win on Cameron Handicap day at Newcastle today.

With Robert Thompson in the saddle the son of Rancho Ruler proved a touch too strong for his rivals winning by a short half head.

Sort if Out is now trained by Neil Godbolt, and connections were immediately repaid their $6,000 they outlayed to purchase the gelding in Melbourne a month ago.

When interviewed before the race Godbolt said he hadn’t really done a lot of hard work with the lightly raced galloper.

"He’s mainly only done some swimming," Godbolt said. "But he’s done everything well."

Sort if Out, who is out of the stakes winner Rich Habit, was having his eighth start today.

He had placed in five of his seven previous starts including a second in the listed Vain Stakes and a third in the Group Two Ascot Vale Stakes to So Gorgeous.

Rich Habit has done a good job at stud as she is also the dam of the Melbourne winners Rich Theme and Richelle as well as the four time winner Rich Return.

There are no less than 11 Group One winners among the weights released yesterday for the $560,000 Gr I-AJC Epsom Handicap (1600m) run at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 5 October 2002.

Big race winners Shogun Lodge and Assertive Lad (58kg) head the 129-strong list.

Incredibly, the 11 Group One winners have between them amassed a total of 24 individual Group One wins.

Many of the nation's best milers are all entered for the event and Racing NSW Chief Handicapper, Mr Mark Webbey, today claimed extra interest has been created with the nomination of quality South African mare, Hoeberg.

"She is the winner of four Group One events in South Africa, and has raced successfully in Singapore and Dubai subsequently," Mr Webbey said.

"There is also four quality nominations from New Zealand and it's pleasing that the event has been supported by the Australian trainers."

Quality six-year-old Shogun Lodge's 58kg is on par with weight-for-age and is identical to the weight the gelding carried to second placings in the past two Doncaster Handicaps.

"Shogun Lodge is the winner of three Group One events and has been placed at the elite level on a further 13 occasions," Mr Webbey recalled.

"The assessment identifies the consistency displayed by Shogun Lodge at the elite level both in Australia and in his two runs in Hong Kong over the past two seasons.

"I remain reluctant to increase the actual weight carried by Shogun Lodge in the last Doncaster despite the slender margin in his defeat by Sunline, and remain confident that the rating of 58kg is an accurate reflection of the form of Shogun Lodge who was successful in the 2000 Epsom carrying 56kg (-1.5 WFA)."

Sharing equal topweight is 2001 Doncaster Handicap, Assertive Lad, who achieved this victory as a three-year-old.

The winner of three Group One events during his career, Assertive Lad has the distinction of being the nation's premier performer at both two and three years of age.

"He's now a five-year-old and has battled injury over the past sixteen months since his emphatic Doncaster win," said Webbey.

"Assertive Lad carried 54kg to an easy win over Shogun Lodge, however, his allocated Epsom weight - despite appearing to be increased by 4kg - is in fact a reassessment of 1.5kg under the weight-for-age scale.

"This is due to the fact that Assertive Lad did not contest any events at four years of age, and I find it difficult to assess the gelding at a level any higher than the allotted figure of 58kg."

Universal Prince takes his Doncaster assessment of 57.5kg across into the Epsom Handicap.

"He's a winner of four Group One events - 3 at three years of age - but he had what could be called a consistent four-year-old season.

"He raced on eleven occasions recording one win - in the Ranvet Stakes - but had three seconds and a third. All these races were contested at the elite level of either Group One or Two.

"Whilst recognized as a 2000 to 2400 metre performer, Universal Prince has contested four events at 1600m recording a win and two placings."

Mr Webbey then comments on the 'form' horse of the moment Defier.

"I've given Defier 56.5kg or 1.5kg under WFA. This weight represents a similar figure to the weights allotted Adam, Mister Innocent and Referral over recent years.

"Defier has followed on from his impressive third in the most recent Doncaster with three consecutive victories in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group I), the Warwick Stakes and the Theo Marks Stakes (both Group II).

"Whilst having some doubt over the merit of his Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory in relation to the opposition encountered, it is somewhat difficult to be less than impressed with the gelding's two victories this season.

"In both races the five-year-old has accounted for quality opposition in impressive fashion.

"Whilst recognising that Defier is being asked to meet Shogun Lodge on 5kg worse terms for having been defeated in the Doncaster, the fact that Defier has been undefeated subsequently, whereas Shogun Lodge has not recorded a victory for 12 months, is identified within these assessments."

The improving Fields of Omagh has been allocated 54kg in the race. The winner of the Group II-Feehan Stakes at his most recent start, the gelding faces his stiffest test amongst the quality opposition of the Epsom.

The five-year-old has now raced on 16 occasions and recorded 9 wins.

"Some of his notable performances have been his victory in the Group III-Eclipse Stakes and a second to Magical Miss in the Group II-Menzies Stakes at Caulfield."

The 2001 Stadbroke Handicap winner Crawl is also on 54kg.

"He's now a six-year-old and has recorded several impressive performances over the Randwick mile including a third in the Epsom and a fourth in the Doncaster Handicap.

"His allocated weight represents a half kilo decrease on the 54.5kg he carried in the most recent Doncaster."

Consistent grey Le Zagaletta has been allocated 53.5kg and is the winner of the Waterford Crystal Mile (Group II) and continues to race consistently.

The seven-year-old has recorded three placings at Group Two level this preparation in the Liston, Craiglee and Feehan Stakes.

Last season's champion three-year-old in the sprint / mile category, Lohnro, has been asked to carry 57.5kg (WFA).

"Interestingly, four-year-olds have a rather imposing record in the Epsom over recent years. Post 1980, this age group has recorded 14 victories from the 22 runnings of the event.

"During the aforementioned period, other four-year-olds who have been asked to carry weight-for-age in the Epsom have been Sovereign Red, Drawn, Flotilla, Sky Chase, Naturalism and Filante - the latter being successful in the 1996 running of the race.

"Lohnro was undefeated in 7 starts through his three-year-old season and his effort in winning the Group One Caulfield Guineas was the dominant performance of any of his age during the season. This victory was the only start at Group One level for Lonhro.

"A more pertinent fact is that Lohnro had started on three occasions at WFA recording 2 wins and a second placing.

"Within those victories he defeated Shogun Lodge on both occasions; his only defeat was a close-up second to Defier in the most recent Warwick Stakes."

Dash For Cash has been allocated 54.5kg (-3 WFA) and was a dual Group One winner at three years of age.

"The allocated weight signifies a half kilo decrease in the rating afforded the grey in the most recent Doncaster in relation to the WFA scale."

Weighted on 52.5kg are quality three-year-olds from last season Royal Code, Excellerator and Pure Theatre.

"This trio of horses have all performed well at Group One level during their three-year-old seasons."

Top mare Hoeberg has been allocated 54.5kg or one kilo under WFA.

The weight allocated Hoeberg is the equivalent weight afforded Dane Ripper in the 1997 Epsom.

"Other notable mares which have been allocated a similar type weight post 1975 have been Toy Show, Scomeld, Riverina Charm and Saleous. In all instances, the 54.5kg allocated these mares was in fact the equivalent of WFA during that time.

"The weight allocated Hoeberg is an average of her international ratings over the preceding two seasons.

"It is difficult to assess her form accurately in comparison to the local Black Type performers due to the fact that she has only had one start in Australia to this time."

Last season's Oaks winner, Republic Lass, has been afforded 53.5kg (-1.5kg WFA).

"This figure is the same given to Savannah Success in the 1999 edition of the race and Champagne in the 1998 race.

"Dual Oaks winning filly Tempest Morn was allocated 54kg (-1kg WFA) in the 2000 running of the race.

"Interestingly, mares have a poor record in Epsom history - post 1960 only three have been successful, the last being La Neige in 1976, where the then four-year-old carried 50.5kg to victory."

Other mares of interest within this year's nominations are the four-year-old Galroof, a dual Group One placegetter in the Doomben Cup and Queensland Derby during the winter, and Elegant Fashion, runner-up to Republic Lass in the most recent AJC Oaks.

He said that in his opinion, A BOB’s performance was disappointing, however he could offer no excuse for it. Trainer Mr B Milligan said that he too could offer no excuse for the performance of A BOB and it was his intention to have A BOB examined by his veterinary surgeon and undertook to report any abnormalities that may be found. Further he said that, in his opinion, A BOB was now suited to longer distance races and if the gelding’s preparation was to continue, that is how it would be placed. A post-race veterinary examination of A BOB failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

If the drought breaks at Collarenebri you can bet Sue Behsman has done it as part of the 2002 Outback Racing Trail.

The skies have opened on the drought-stricken town for the annual race meeting for the past seven years- ever since Sue started as Collarenebri Jockey Club secretary.

"It’s obvious I’m the rain maker’," says Sue, who maintains her role as rainmaker is just a coincidence.

The five-race card at Collarenebri on Saturday, September 21 carries prize money of $18,000.

Sue says the event provides a huge morale lift for Collarenebri (pop. 400) 45 kilometres west of Moree.

"It’s a time when we can forget the drought and get together on the day; everyone needs some release from these hard times," Sue said.

"The meeting demonstrates the courage of this outback town epitomised as part of the 2002 Outback Racing Trail."

NSW Country Racing Council Chief Executive, Brian Judd, says the Outback Racing Trail presents a wonderful opportunity during the Year of the Outback for people who have never been bush before to combine that experience with a great day at the races.

At no stage over the final 200M was PERFECT LAD ever able to obtain fully clear running and as a result of this, PERFECT LAD went to the finish without being fully tested. NAUNIM raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight.

RACE 4: CASE IH COTTON MAIDEN HANDICAP 1300 METRES:

W J Cook replaced P Spry (injured) as the rider of ROSE BONBON. LUCKY SWING, which injured itself en route to the barrier, was inspected by the club’s veterinary surgeon and declared unfit. Acting on this advice LUCKY SWING was withdrawn at 3:08pm and when correct weight was declared it was ordered that all monies invested on LUCKY SWING be refunded in full and all other bets made on the race prior to 3:08pm be subject to the deduction of 2c win and 3c place on the face value of the betting ticket. ROSE BONBON missed the start and then for some distance approaching the turn near the 1000M had to be continually steadied when racing fiercely. D Frahm (SHY EAGLE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding (AR137(a)) in that passing the 250M he allowed his mount to shift out whilst riding it along when insufficiently clear of IRRITATE, which struck the heels of SHY EAGLE, blundered and almost fell. D Frahm’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to expire on 4 October 2002, on which day he may resume. Acting under LR13 it was ordered that D Frahm fulfil his engagements up to and including Saturday 21 September and his suspension would commence after that. As a result of this incident, RAINDROP, which was following IRRITATE, had to be severely checked and shifted in, losing considerable ground. Near the 200M and then again near the 70M SHY EAGLE and ROSE BONBON bumped, resulting in ROSE BONBON becoming unbalanced and blundering near the 70M. D Frahm was severely reprimanded (AR137(a)).

RACE 7: CASE CREDIT OPEN HANDICAP 1000 METRES:

C Morgan replaced A White (became indisposed) as the rider of YALLAKAZAAN. YALLAKAZAAN jumped awkwardly at the start, shifted out abruptly and crowded MAIN THEME onto KWILA. ATMOSPHERIC missed the start. For some distance in the early stages both MAIN THEME and KWILA raced tight on the inside of ELECTRICAL STORM, which shifted in slightly when not quite clear. When questioned in relation to the run of BOLD WILLIAM, A W Robinson explained that after beginning well his mount failed to muster any speed in the early stages and approaching the home turn BOLD WILLIAM was not travelling kindly. As a result of this he was forced to place his mount under hands and heels pressure much earlier than he would have wished. He said that in the early part of the straight he obtained a clear run and from the 400M until near the 200M BOLD WILLIAM responded to his vigorous whip riding, however over the concluding stages he was held up behind MR. MOHICAN and could not improve. He said that in his opinion, had he obtained clear running at this point, he would have finished closer to the winner, however he was not convinced that BOLD WILLIAM would have finished in the placings. His explanation was accepted. For some distance passing the 300M MR. MOHICAN was held up behind YALLAKAZAAN and unable to improve, then had to be shifted out to go forward and inside the 150M was accidentally struck on the head by the whip of D Frahm (CLEAR MEMORY).

RACE 8: CASE IH/KENWAY & CLARK MOREE CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1400M:

BOYKAMBIL reared at the start and lost considerable ground. Near the 300M AIR WAR had to be checked and lost ground when attempting to gain a narrow run between EL TEMPESTAD, which was weakening and SO PRECISE. As a result of this, AIR WAR was continually held up for some distance then near the 150M AIR WAR again had to be steadied and shifted to the inside of SO PRECISE to go forward. A post-race veterinary examination of AIR WAR revealed that the gelding was lame in the off fore-leg.

Weather: Overcast
Track: Good
(Dead at 1.05pm)

RACE 1: Sefton Handicap 1600m:

Sierra Dane was a late withdrawal at 9.01am. Trainer Mr D. Payne will be interviewed concerning the late notification. When questioned concerning Royal Siren racing in the lead, G. Boss stated that his instructions had been to endeavour to race forward, but with no pace on he elected to lead. Trainer Mr J. Morish said his instructions were similar to those given at the filly’s most recent start, but on that occasion when trapped wide the jockey elected to restrain Royal Siren. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Inatin was displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken. After morning showers the Stewards amended the track rating to dead at 1.05pm following the running of this race.

RACE 2: Villawood Maiden Handicap 1100m:

Sentimental Tour and Mighty Jude were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, when taken in by Power Surge, Princess Dragon shifted in and hampered Rainfalls, which had been slow to begin. At the same point Our Axeman was tightened for room between Divo and Prince Dane, both of which shifted ground. Sentimental Tour hung out badly throughout the event. Trainer Mr G. Walter was advised that a warning would be placed on Sentimental Tour. P. Ferris, rider of 6 th placegetter, Prince Dane, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the finish line. Post-race veterinary examinations of The Builder and Predominater did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: Glenfield Handicap 2400m:

Big Henry was slow to begin. C. Brown (The Builder) dropped his whip at the entrance to the straight.

RACE 4: Macarthur Handicap 1000m:

Brisanna was slow to begin. C. Brown (Supreme Riffs) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out on the home turn resulting in Kianben being hampered. B. Pengelly (Pride And Power) was reprimanded for shifting ground approaching the home turn crowding Brisanna out onto the heels of Illuminar. D. Beadman stated that after this incident Brisanna, which was having difficulty in the going, became unbalanced and then did not respond to his riding. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Illuminar, B. York stated that the gelding was coming back in distance and from its wide barrier was forced extremely wide and was never travelling on the bit. Stable foreman Mr D. Roberts undertook to report to the Stewards the results of a full blood count on Illuminar after which consideration will be given as to whether the mare should trial. Post-race veterinary examinations of Illuminar, Brisanna and Top Slice did not reveal any abnormalities. Swab samples were taken from Brisanna and Illuminar. Stewards heard a complaint from trainer Mr R. Thomsen that J. Sheehan had not followed instructions on Top Slice to ride that horse in behind. From their observations and after viewing the video the Stewards were satisfied that Top Slice jumped cleanly and went to the lead without any pressure from J. Sheehan and advised Mr Thomsen that they could not find error in J. Sheehan’s ride.

RACE 5: Villawood Maiden Handicap 1100m:

Moon Mambo was a late withdrawal at 9.50am on veterinary advice. Raise A Knight was a late withdrawal at 3.04pm on veterinary advice that the colt was unfit to start. Yours Faithfully kicked out repeatedly after being loaded. During this incident Silent Laughter broke through the front of the stalls, but was quickly recaptured, examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Top Tango, which was fractious in the stall, became cast momentarily. Top Tango and Yours Faithfully were withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 3.22pm. Subsequently it was ordered that all bets on Raise A Knight, Top Tango and Yours Faithfully be refunded and that all bets made prior to the withdrawal of Raise A Knight at 3.04pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 17¢ win, 17¢ place, 38¢ quinella, 17¢ multiple doubles, and that bets made after 3.04pm and prior to the withdrawals of Top Tango and Yours Faithfully at 3.22pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 3¢ win, 4¢ place, 8¢ quinella, 3¢ multiple doubles. Mr A. Wildman, trainer of Yours Faithfully, and Mr G. Lee, representing Mr J. Lee, trainer of Top Tango, were advised that their horses must barrier trial satisfactorily before being permitted to race again. Sacred Sun and Grand Filante were slow to begin. When questioned concerning the improved performance of the winner, Dane Supply, trainer Mr R. Thomsen stated that after a particularly good 4 th placing at Royal Randwick on 21 August Dane Supply disappointed at Warwick Farm on 3 September after becoming very fractious, endeavouring to get under the barrier and subsequently missing the start. Mr Thomsen added that extra barrier training and the addition of a barrier blanket had been the most significant point in the Dane Supply’s clean beginning today and its subsequent improved performance.

RACE 6: Panania Handicap 1300m:

Stanmark jumped awkwardly. Catch Me Mate was slow to begin and shortly after was buffeted for room between Exotikos and Stanmark, both of which shifted ground. C. Brown (Catch Me Mate) stated that his mount then overraced and was never comfortable in the going. Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, concurred with C. Brown that Catch Me Mate did not handle the going and he undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Catch Me Mate following the race. At the entrance to the straight Her Man Bob was steadied off the heels of Cariani, which commenced to weaken quickly. Shortly after, Her Man Bob again had to steady off the heels of Bayroof. Her Man Bob then did not obtain clear running until passing the 200m. As Cariani continued to weaken, Stanmark was checked off the heels of that gelding on straightening. When questioned about Flipnul being ridden off the pace, B. Cooper stated that the gelding did not show its normal early speed today.

RACE 7: Canley Vale Handicap 1300m:

As the track was downgraded to dead Stewards acceded to a request from Mr N. Fraser-Campin, representing trainer Mr G. Rogerson, for the withdrawal of Bonbird at 3.22pm. Prior to declaration of correct weight Stewards heard an application by rider J. Cassidy and trainer Mr G. White to have Ravenswood declared a non-runner on the grounds that it was denied a fair start. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, including barrier attendant Mr R. Turner and Starter Mr W. Cooper, Stewards declared Ravenswood a runner when they found that the mare, which was fractious in the stall, got its head down just prior to barrier release and was being assisted by the attendant to get its head up, but missed the start as a result. At the 1200m Pixies shifted in away from Cardiff Bay, which resulted in Laetitia having to be steadied across the heels of My Czech Chick. Approaching the 600m My Czech Chick was awkwardly placed inside the heels of Canyon Crest. Between the 500m and until straightening Laetitia was badly held up on the heels of Pixies before being checked and shifting to the inside the heels of that runner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed My Czech Chick to be displaying a poor recovery rate. Trainer Mr M. Conners indicated that the mare will now be spelled.

RACE 8: Narwee Handicap 1600m:

As the track was downgraded to dead Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr J. Lee for the withdrawal of Raise A King at 1.48pm. Tray Bit, which was injured en route to the course, was a late withdrawal at 2.36pm on veterinary advice that the gelding was unfit to start. Magilas and Le Splash jumped awkwardly and made contact resulting in L. Beasley (Le Splash) becoming badly unbalanced. C. Munce (Magilas) was found guilty of a charge under AR137(b) of having failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race. C. Munce was fined $300.

Weather: Fine
Track: Good

RACE 1: Grant Constructions Handicap 1500m:

Shortly after the start Veloce shifted in resulting in Cryptique being taken in onto Bit Tiddly. This resulted in Kalalycia being taken across the heels of Thunderwin. Mi Senorita and Onyx were inclined to overrace in the early stages. C. Munce (Our Archie’s Girl) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in on the first turn when not clear of Vita, resulting in that horse being unnecessarily crowded for room. Simmysue and Cryptique had difficulty obtaining clear running in the latter part of the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Bit Tiddly did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Cryptique had sustained a laceration to the inside of the near-fore pastern.

RACE 2: Vodka Cruiser Handicap 1900m:

Hot Music, which was again slow to begin today, was steadied off the heels of Ruready rounding the first turn. Trainer Mr J. Morrisey indicated that Hot Music will now be spelled. Approaching the first turn Black Anthem got its head up when overracing. Crimewave and Jadana were hampered in consequence. When questioned regarding Dudley Do Right racing back in the field, trainer Mr P. Tagg stated that with the horse stepping up in distance today his instructions had been to ensure the gelding did not overrace or be caught without cover. B. Pengelly stated that when Dudley Do Right began only fairly he elected to fold across behind the field and then got further back than had been intended.

RACE 3: Napoleon Perdis Handicap 1400m:

Tom Coureuse, which drew the outside barrier, ducked out abruptly when the gates were released dislodging its rider, D. Beasley. After viewing the video the Stewards declared Tom Coureuse a starter and ruled that the colt must barrier trial to their satisfaction prior to its next race start. They ruled further that in that trial Tom Coureuse must jump from the outside barrier. A post-race veterinary examination of Tom Coureuse did not reveal any abnormality. On jumping Summer Eyes and Polar North were buffeted when crowded for room between Vicissitude and Toppear, both of which shifted ground. Toppear was inclined to overrace in the early stages. On the home turn Toppear, which was commencing to weaken, had to be steadied when tightened for room between Dial Tones, which was inclined to shift in, and Magic Marvo, which shifted out. When questioned, C. Munce stated that Fiammarosa was tardy to begin and inclined to overrace early, but did not handle the jump in class and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Fiammarosa had aggravated old speedy cuts to both hind pasterns. When questioned, D. Nikolic (Riding Master) stated that his mount was inclined to race greenly and with three weeks between runs and the class rise he felt that the gelding did not run out the 1400m journey today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Riding Master was mildly distressed and displaying a poor recovery rate. A post-race veterinary examination of Redwood Falls did not reveal any abnormality. An inquiry was opened into App. M. Bell’s handling of Redwood Falls when evidence was taken from App. Bell and trainer Mr C. Connors. App. Bell stated that he had been given instructions to look for cover and ensure that Redwood Falls did not overrace early, but that when Redwood Falls began awkwardly and he crossed to the rails he was reluctant to push his mount along to tack onto the field as he felt it may result in Redwood Falls overracing. App. Bell agreed that he had erred in not commencing to ride his mount along in an endeavour to put it in the race earlier than he did. Trainer Mr C. Connors expressed dissatisfaction with the ride and stated that Redwood Falls had done well going into its first-up run and had been fancied by the stable. App. Bell was severely reprimanded and advised that even taking into account his inexperience in the metropolitan area his ride was devoid of the necessary degree of judgment and initiative.

RACE 4: Premier Express Freight Research Stakes 1200m:

Samar was slow to begin. Nanny Maroon jumped awkwardly, shifted in and bumped Gwendolyn. When being steadied off the heels of Trail Of Gold, Nanny Maroon shifted in at the 800m causing Apo Quality to be checked. Lady Cay was held up for a run in the early part of the straight. Passing the 200m Nordic Flight (J. Lee) shifted in and crowded the running of Perfect Halo. J. Lee was advised to make more effort to keep his mounts straight. Approaching the 100m Samar had to be steadied off the heels of Quest For Success, which shifted out. Near the 50m Gahela Baby had to be steadied when tightened for room between Lady Cay and Trail Of Gold, both of which shifted ground.

RACE 5: Tuesdays’ Slave Millinery Handicap 1500m:

Mon Mekki overraced badly in the early stages and its rider, App. P. Hammersley, allowed the mare to stride forward. Due to the lack of pace early a number of runners, including Thorns, Time Deposit, Viva La Vie and Interbank, overraced early and shifted ground. As a result Factional was hampered. Near the 700m Royal Circle, when overracing, shifted out away from the heels of Mon Mekki and in so doing hampered Daam Lucky. Shortly after entering the straight Statesmanship was disappointed for a run between Royal Circle and Bedouin and in so doing made contact with the hindquarter of Bedouin. Statesmanship then shifted back to the inside of Royal Circle passing the 200m and was again held up due initially to Royal Circle shifting in and then Mon Mekki (App. P. Hammersley) running out abruptly. App. Hammersley was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to put away the whip and maintain better control over his mount.

RACE 6: De Bortoli Wines Kingston Town Stakes 2000m:

Master Pom was a late withdrawal at 8.53am on veterinary advice. Near the 1800m Zeltrice was steadied off the heels of Werewolf and shifted out hampering No Limit. Youhadyourwarning laid in in the early part of the straight. Passing the 150m Dress Circle shifted out and brushed Youhadyourwarning. Mr M. Plumb, trainer of Native Jazz, was notified of his obligation to advise Stewards of any change of race tactics after an inquiry into Native Jazz being ridden back in the field. When questioned regarding Werewolf racing in a more forward position, trainer Mr B. Cross and rider P. Ferris stated that the instructions had been similar to the gelding’s most recent start at Rosehill Gardens on 31 August, however, on that occasion when crossed early Werewolf had dropped the bit and got back to mid-field.

RACE 7: Rydges Parramatta Theo Marks Stakes 1300m:

Assertive Lad jumped awkwardly and lost ground as a result, and then when ridden forward raced wide throughout. Kingsgate knuckled over on jumping. Approaching the first turn Kingsgate commenced to overrace, shifted out across the heels of Carael Boy and in so doing crowded Fouardee resulting in that horse having to be checked off the heels of Salgado. Kingsgate continued to overrace badly throughout the middle stages. When questioned, B. Pengelly stated that rounding the home turn he was unable to hold Phoenix Park in as Carael Boy was inclined to lay out towards the heels of Assertive Lad. Phoenix Park was then held up for a run inside Assertive Lad until near the 250m. Defier had difficulty obtaining a clear run and had to change direction near the 100m. A post-race veterinary examination of Assertive Lad did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken.

RACE 8: Nivea Visage Superfecta 1100m:

Zabarra began awkwardly. Noble Dragon shifted in at the start tightening Desert Sashay onto Red Hannigan. Near the 700m Major, which was pulling hard, ran out across the heels of Cosmic Rays. When questioned regarding the performance of Red Hannigan, D. Beasley stated that after being hampered shortly after the start he got back further than he intended, but nevertheless the gelding was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race. D. Beasley added that Red Hannigan trialled well going into the race and the only excuse he could offer was that the gelding had previously disappointed racing first up. A post-race veterinary examination of Red Hannigan did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Red Hannigan following the race.
