Supplementary Report:

Royal Randwick Saturday 7 September: Race 3 Tattersalls Plate 2400m:

Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, advised that Outlaws, which raced disappointingly, will now be spelled.

RACE 1: Become an STC Member Handicap 1100m:

Plum Pudding, which swung away and dislodged its rider when being loaded in the barriers, was withdrawn at 12.25pm. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Plum Pudding be refunded and there be no alteration to other betting. On jumping Kenwest was hampered when Danseur Celebre shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination of Danseur Celebre did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Passing the 900m, after being tightened by Dark Topaze, which hung in away from Royal Flutter, Loopy was checked when it ran out across the heels of Dark Topaze. Danseur Celebre hung out when trapped wide in the middle stages. Bocconcini raced greenly rounding the home turn and then ran wide on straightening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Royal Flutter to be lame in front. Trainer Mr W. Prain was advised that a veterinary certificate must be provided before Royal Flutter is permitted to race again.

RACE 2: Corporate Membership Handicap 1550m:

On jumping Acacia Bay and Shalang were tightened for room between Maverick and Bullala, both of which shifted ground. After making contact with Bullala near the 1400m Master Veloce became unbalanced and shifted in resulting in Bullala being taken across the running of Acacia Bay, which had to be checked. When questioned, B. York (Jesterette) stated that his mount raced ungenerously and on two occasions shied away from the running rail. Ms E. Candy, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, indicated that Jesterette would now be spelled.

RACE 3: Members Raceday Rewards Handicap 1200m:

At the entrance to the straight when Cuchulinn shifted to outside the heels of Alqsar, Eco Warrior was taken out onto Galiano. Cuchulinn then hung out, which resulted in Eco Warrior and Galiano being hampered further. Near the 100m Eco Warrior was steadied when tightened for room between Riu and Galiano, both of which shifted ground. Post-race veterinary examinations of Knuckleodeon and Eco Warrior did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: Webster Signs Superfecta 1900m:

The saddle on Ya Ya Effendi shifted forward in the early stages placing its rider, J. Cassidy, at a disadvantage. Iggy ran out badly rounding the first turn taking Casual Story wider. Trainer Ms P. Webber reported that Iggy got its tongue over the bit and that it was now her intention to give the gelding a short break and then experiment in its work with a lugging bit. As Iggy commenced to give ground quickly near the 500m Iggy and Casual Story raced tight for a short distance inside Mouthwash. A post-race veterinary examination of Iggy did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 5: Members Merchandise Handicap 1900m:

An objection was lodged by D. Nikolic, rider of 4th placegetter, Lion Rock, against Storm Buster being declared 2nd placegetter alleging interference near the 500m. The Stewards established that approaching the 500m Lion Rock and Storm Buster both endeavoured to take a run between Interstate and Black Comet where there was insufficient room for two horses. In the incident the hindquarters of Storm Buster were contacted by the shoulder of Lion Rock resulting in Storm Buster being turned in across the running of Lion Rock, which had to be checked across the heels of Interstate. The Stewards were not satisfied that the interference was fully attributable to Storm Buster and bearing in mind also the margin of 1¾ lengths dismissed the objection. At a subsequent inquiry A. W. Robinson was reminded of his responsibility to ensure there is sufficient room when shifting ground.

RACE 6: Inside The Barrier Breakfast Handicap 1250m:

Bisonte was slow to begin. Ziemel Tayeb, which was slow to begin, was checked shortly after when tightened for room between Zarouk and Gladiada, both of which shifted ground. Battle Song, which also missed the start slightly, was hampered shortly after when tightened for room between Abolition, which shifted out, and Kiwi Cruiser, which shifted in away from Fawaz.

RACE 7: Melbourne Cup Day At The Gardens Handicap 1550m:

Akwendi shifted out at the start and bumped Eyes And Tees. Rosa Marada, which was held up for a run in the early part of the straight, then raced in restricted room between National Treasure and Dancing Diamond.

RACE 8: Guineas Restaurant Superfecta 1550m:

River To Me, which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after the start when Panorama shifted in. York Street, which missed the start slightly, was checked shortly afterwards when tightened for room between Kepi Blanc and Forbill, both of which shifted ground. York Street and Kepi Blanc were then buffeted for room for a short distance between Hursley Flyer and Forbill. Approaching the first turn Counter Force got its head up when being restrained off the heels of Panorama. In the incident Counter Force shifted in and hampered York Street. A post-race veterinary examination of York Street did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. D. McLellan stated that York Street, which was back in distance today, was not suited when it got back in the field due to early interference, particularly as the tempo of the race developed into a sprint home. Trainer Mr P. Perry stated that he would be looking to step York Street up in distance if a suitable race was available and undertook to report to the Stewards if there was anything amiss with the gelding in the days subsequent.

r3bedemurray.jpg (8377 bytes)The powerful Bede Murray stable was seen to advantage at Randwick on Saturday with champion filly VICTORY VEIN (201 Sires Produce PI$32,500) and rising star HALF HENNESSY (2001 Classic $65,000) claiming wins at Group Three level.

Perennial stable favourite UNIVERSAL PRINCE (1999 Easter $80,000) resumed with a whirlwind finish to grab third in the Tattersalls Tramway Handicap Gr 3 under the whopping weight of 62 kg.

Victory Vein produced another "no frills" win, travelling sweetly off the pace, before pouncing on the lead to claim the AJC Furious Stakes Gr 3. The consummate professional led home an Inglis trifecta with Greg Hickman's classy miss ROYAL PURLER (2001 Classic $8,000) running boldly for second and Grahame Begg's blue blood LAVISHLY (2001 PI$425,000) finding the line in the manner of a genuine Oaks contender.

There were some lovely fillies in the race, but realistically they've all yet to beat the winner and as long as Victory Vein is racing with the obvious zest and enjoyment she is showing at present, the other girls will have their work cut out in these set weight events.

Meanwhile, Talented colt Half Hennessy struck top form with an impressive win in the AJC Ming Dynasty Quality Gr 3 under the top weight of 60 kg, showing tremendous improvement on his first up run.

"He had a big blow again today," said jockey Corey Brown. "It was a great run carrying all that weight, there's just so much improvement in him."

Bede Murray immediately announced Melbourne spring plans for Half Hennessy, with the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby as his likely targets.

"He'll be well suited at a mile and hopefully further. He relaxes so well and then is strong at the right end," said Murray.

Half Hennessy was bred and offered for sale by Inverness Stud at Bowral on the Southern Highlands. Purchased at the 2001 Classic Yearling Sale for $65,000, the colt is the sixth foal from former speedy two year old Singeing Lamp, a daughter of renowned producer Donna Nook (GB).

The family has gained it's sterling reputation through a string of fast performers including Golden Slipper winner Catbird, and other speedsters like Maizcay, Beans, Dieu D'or, and County. However it's not all pure speed, there are some family members who could run a journey, such as South African stakes horse Mzilikazi and the dour staying mare Donna Cara, dam of Murray's previous classy filly Donna Dior, a stakes-winner at 1600 metres.

So, the $64,000 question, can Half Hennessy run the testing 2500 metres of the Victoria Derby?

If looks, attitude and a well planned preparation count for anything, then this colt has everything going for him.

RACE 1: LAWYER MAIDEN PLATE 1000 METRES:

WEE WILLY jumped awkwardly at the start, shifted out abruptly and crowded LA HOIYA, which lost a little ground. When placed under pressure inside the 200M MAHONIE raced greenly and shifted out. WEE WILLY hung out throughout and placed its rider at a considerable disadvantage. Trainer Mr M Mason was told that prior to racing again, WEE WILLY would have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. Further Mr Mason will be told that owing to the racing record of WEE WILLY, should the gelding not improve its waywardness Stewards would make a recommendation to the Committee to have it barred from all future races.

Trainer Mr L Griffith was told that prior to racing again, GLAREOLA would have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial.

RACE 4: CENTRO SHORT OPEN HANDICAP 1200 METRES:

TONOSAMA jumped awkwardly at the start resulting in M Bell losing his off-side iron, which placed him at a severe disadvantage in the early stages. For some distance passing the 900M TONOSAMA had to be steadied and raced fiercely when crowded slightly by PROUD MARK, which was carried in by PALACE STORM, which shifted in when not quite clear.

1 st : PROUD MARK 2 nd : TONOSAMA 3 rd : PALACE STORM 4 th : GALACTIC PRIDE

RACE 5: ACTION STAR CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1000 METRES:

G Matthews replaced L Henry (transport difficulties) as the rider of HASTY REGENT. MCHAPPY, which struck its self on the enclosure fence during the parade to the barrier was inspected by the club’s veterinary surgeon behind the start and declared unfit. Acting on this advice MCHAPPY was withdrawn at 4:03pm and when correct weight was declared it was ordered that all bets made on MCHAPPY be refunded in full and all other bets made on the race prior to 4:03pm be subject to the deduction of 16c win and 14c place on the face value of the betting ticket. CROWNING HALO jumped awkwardly the start, shifted out abruptly and crowded GOAMBLE. Shortly after this GOAMBLE (D Spriggs) bucked and dislodged its rider. D Spriggs was transported to Tamworth Base Hospital. Trainer Mr J Englebrecht was told that before racing again GOAMBLE must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. Near the 150M CROWNING HALO had to be steadied momentarily to avoid the heels of SHALFIE (M McFarlane), which shifted out in search of clear running. M McFarlane was reprimanded (AR137(a)). When questioned in relation to the performance of CROWNING HALO, G Ryan explained that the filly began fairly in the early stages, however was trapped deep and for this reason he elected to ease and take up a position just behind the front runner, one off the fence. He said that at no stage during the race did CROWNING HALO travel and he placed the filly under pressure, prior to rounding the home turn. He said that in the early part of the straight CROWNING HALO failed to respond to his vigorous efforts and ran to the finish, in his opinion, in a disappointing manner. Further he stated that CROWNING HALO felt normal in its action and displayed no respiratory problems. His explanation was accepted. A post-race veterinary examination of CROWNING HALO failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. When questioned in relation to his ride on BARADINE, P Losh explained that after drawing very wide at the barrier today, he was instructed to ride his mount in a rearward position in the early stages and attempt to improve from the 600M. He said that after the start BARADINE was caught very wide in the early stages and he eased back in accordance with his instructions and placed the gelding under pressure passing the 500M. He said that in the home straight, whilst BARADINE did respond to his constant urgings, the gelding raced greenly and became extremely unbalanced over the concluding stages. His explanation was accepted.

Top Bookie Gambles on Port Macquarie Bonus

Leading Gold Coast bookmaker Lloyd Merlehan is prepared to gamble that some of Australia's biggest stables cannot win four races at next month's 2002 Carlton Draught Port Macquarie Cup meeting.

Merlehan has agreed to underwrite a $50,000 owner/trainer bonus that is being offered by Port Macquarie Race Club at the Port Macquarie Cup meeting on Friday October 11.

The bonus will be shared equally by a trainer with his successful clients if he can win the $50,000 Carlton Draught Port Macquarie Cup (2000m) plus three other races on the nine-race program.

"It may seem a challenge for a trainer to win four races on one day but some big stables have shown it can be achieved at these big country meetings," Merlehan said.

"From a bookmaker's viewpoint it is seen as a business risk."

Port Macquarie Race Club chief executive Michael Bowman said his club was grateful to Merlehan for accepting the risk of underwriting the bonus.

"It is getting harder and harder for race clubs to find an insurer willing to underwrite a substantial bonus for their major meetings because they are consistently won by leading trainers," he said.

"We appreciate Lloyd Merlehan's support as he admits that he will not be surprised if it is won because we have programmed nine races.

"We offered several $20,000 bonuses for trainers winning three races at our Cup meetings during the 1990s and they were won regularly.

"Those results indicate it will not be impossible for a trainer to land our new bonus."

Bowman said his club is endeavouring to attract leading trainers from Sydney, Newcastle and provincial areas to set big teams for the Port Macquarie Cup meeting.

"We have been in contact with a number of trainers and the interest is high because the bonus supplements our record prizemoney for the Cup meeting," he said.

Merlehan has been a guest bookmaker at the Port Macquarie Cup for the last two years and is looking forward to again working at the biggest spring racing event on the NSW north coast.

PMRC expects a holiday crowd of more than 6000 to attend the Port Macquarie Cup as the carnival coincides with school holidays.

Port Macquarie Race Club has also invited champion trainer Bart Cummings and popular jockey Bernadette Cooper to be special guests at the Port Macquarie Cup meeting.

He added that in his opinion RED LEADER may not have handled the shifting track conditions. A post race veterinary examination of RED LEADER revealed the gelding was displaying a poor recovery rate. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of JORDAN’S TABOO A G Robinson its rider explained that at its previous start he may have ridden the gelding too close to the pace on that occasion and in his opinion the gelding is better suited ridden quietly. Trainer Mr J Dunn explained that in his opinion JORDAN’S TABOO appreciated the drop in class and this was the major factor in the horse’s performance today.

Supplementary Report:

Warwick Farm Tuesday 3 September: Race 6 Bexley Handicap 1400m:

Trainer Mr R. Quinton today confirmed that his instructions had been that from the wide barrier for Cardiff Bay to be ridden forward without being bustled early. He agreed that when Cardiff Bay missed the start slightly the mare had been permitted to get back further than he had wished.

J. Cassidy on Interstorm

Race 2

J. Sheehan on Choisir

Race 4

J. Innes on Royal Siren

Race 6

C. Brown on Scale The Heights

Race 7

Race 8

B. Cooper on History Maker

RACE 1: Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap 1400m:

Russell On got its head up and overraced badly when being steadied off the heels of Hymnfamous in the early stages. When questioned regarding Eastwest Success, D. McLellan stated that his mount had an easy run in front, but disappointed in its failure to finish off its race and in his opinion raced like a tired horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Eastwest Success was lame in the off-fore leg and had abraded its hind bumpers. Trainer Mr D. Smith advised that Eastwest Success will now be spelled. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Rustenberg to be suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr G. Rogerson was advised that before Rustenberg is permitted to race again he must present the results of a full veterinary examination, including the results of an ECG examination, and that Rustenberg must then trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

RACE 2: Roman Consul Stakes 1200m:

Prime Century, which was kicked behind the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. At an inquiry into interference in the early and middle stages, J. Sheehan (Choisir) stated that near the 900m he allowed his mount to improve to take up a position behind Calaway Gal, which was racing one off the fence, but when restrained Choisir ran in bumping Prophet Jewel, which had to be checked. Choisir then ran out across the heels of Calaway Gal and heavily bumped Prime Century, taking that gelding wider. Choisir continued to overrace and in so doing caused Calaway Gal to be buffeted onto Force Apollo and when Prime Century improved around Choisir near the 700m Choisir shifted out bumping Prime Century on the hindquarter on two occasions resulting in Prime Century being turned in and Choisir being taken in causing Calaway Gal to be checked. Trainer Mr P. Perry was notified that a warning was being placed on Choisir's racing manners and that a repetition of today's performance could lead to the horse being barred to trials. Rounding the home turn Prophet Jewel raced tight to the inside of Calaway Gal. Close to the finish line Prophet Jewel had to come to the outside of the heels of Bollinger, which shifted out under pressure. When questioned, D. McLellan (Prime Century) stated that the buffeting Prime Century had received, together with the fact that he had to make use of the gelding in covering additional ground, were the primary factors in the gelding's failure to finish off the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Prime Century to be displaying a slow recovery rate.

RACE 3: Tattersalls Plate 2400m:

When questioned, C. Brown (Outlaws) stated that he got a little further back than he intended when Power Of Pegasus elected to race off the fence, and rather than be three wide he chose to take a trail behind that runner. He added that nevertheless Outlaws could not quicken when asked for an effort from the 600m and its run was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of Outlaws did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, undertook to report to the Stewards on Monday on the progress of Outlaws and the future plans of that gelding.

RACE 4: Furious Stakes 1400m:

Sunday Joy was slow to begin. Highest shifted out at the start taking Chatelaine out onto Royal Siren. Linking up with the course proper at the 1000m Lavishly was bumped and became unbalanced and Royal Purler was steadied when Highest, which, after initially shifting in away from Chatelaine (J. Cassidy), was taken in by that runner. In relieving the pressure Highest shifted out and bumped the hindquarter of Chatelaine, which had the effect of turning that horse in and exacerbating the tightening to Royal Purler and Lavishly. Approaching the 600m Sunday Joy shifted out taking Victory Vein out onto Chatelaine. Stratica was held up for a run until passing the 200m. Ms Bowie was unable to obtain clear running in the straight and near the 200m was checked from the heels of Salameh. Lavishly was inclined to lay in away from Royal Purler when under pressure over the concluding stages and its rider, C. Brown, had difficulty riding the filly out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Salameh to be displaying a slow recovery rate.

RACE 5: Chelmsford Stakes 1600m:

App. C. Newitt (Platinum Scissors) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1400m, which resulted in Kaapgun being taken in across the running of Yorkshire Lass, which had to be checked. On the home turn, after being bumped on the hindquarter by Lonhro, Platinum Scissors shifted out allowing Lonhro a run between Daniel's The Man and Platinum Scissors (App. C. Newitt). App. Newitt was advised that his riding at the stage of the race lacked the necessary degree of competitiveness. A. G. Robinson (Mr. Bureaucrat) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 100m he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount shifting in and as a result hampering Shogun Lodge, taking Shogun Lodge in onto Republic Lass, which was taken across the running of Yorkshire Lass, which had to be checked. A. G. Robinson's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 8 September 2002 and to expire on Saturday 21 September 2002 on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account A. G. Robinson's good race riding record.

RACE 6: Club Transitional Handicap 1800m:

Scale The Heights lost its near-fore plate on jumping. Red Trinket was badly held up behind Master Pom until passing the 200m. C. Munce (Master Pom) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in at the 1600m resulting in Desert Brigadier and Musical Beat being hampered. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Master Pom to be displaying a poor recovery rate. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Musical Beat, which raced disappointingly, to be suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr J. Morrisey was advised that before Musical Beat is permitted to race again he must present the results of a full veterinary examination, including the results of an ECG examination, and that Musical Beat must then trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

RACE 7: Tattersalls Tramway Handicap 1400m:

Freemason, which broke through the barriers, was examined by the club veterinarian and passed fit to start. J. Sheehan, rider of 3rd placegetter, Universal Prince, availed himself of Stewards patrol videos prior to declaration of correct weight with a view to lodging an objection against the winner, Gordo. Stewards also viewed the video and were not of the opinion that the incident had a material effect on the relative finishing positions of the 1st and 3rd placegetters. At a subsequent inquiry C. Brown (Gordo) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 150m. In the incident, after being inconvenienced by Gordo, Universal Prince shifted in away from that runner resulting in Forest Jim having to be steadied and Miss Bussell, which had been held up for a run, having to come outside the heels of Forest Jim to obtain clear running. Gordo again shifted ground over the final 50m taking Universal Prince in. When questioned regarding the performance of Swiss Echo, J. Cassidy stated that the horse had worked well leading into the race and he was disappointed in its failure to finish off the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Swiss Echo to have sustained a laceration to the off hip and abrasions to both hocks. A swab sample was taken. Ms E. Candy, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, undertook to report if there was anything significant amiss with the horse in the days subsequent.

RACE 8: James Barnes Transitional Handicap 1400m:

Beamer overraced in the middle stages. Storm Zero pulled hard in the middle stages. Approaching the 700m, when the pace steadied Just Imagine, when being checked off the heels of Rinehart, shifted in causing Evander to be checked. Rounding the turn at the 600m, after shifting in and making contact with the hindquarter of Just Imagine, Cognac Trader then shifted out and made contact with Yes Chief resulting in that horse becoming unbalanced. In the early part of the straight Cognac Trader was held up for a run inside Evander. Cognac Trader then switched back to the inside of Yes Chief before being again disappointed for a run. Barawin, which was held up for a run, shifted out passing the 200m causing Plea, which also had been held up for a run, to be inconvenienced. Just Imagine, which did not obtain clear running until the 150m, was hampered shortly afterwards when Yes Chief shifted in away from Evander. B. Cooper (History Maker) stated that the mare became very stirred up prior to the race and did not settle at any stage. A post-race veterinary examination revealed History Maker to be displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken.
