Guy's Boy Could Be Waterhouse's Theo Marks Defier

r5guywalter.jpg (7327 bytes)Despite beating Lonhro last start in the Warwick Stakes, talented gelding Defier is no good thing for tomorrow's Rydges Parramatta Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) according to trainer Guy Walter.

Walter, who will also be represented in Melbourne's feature race by Spinning Hill, said he was concerned with the fact Defier would be dropping in distance from his first up win.

First up Defier downed the brilliant Lonhro over 1400 metres, and tomorrow he will drop back to 1300 metres.

"The drop back in distance is far from ideal," Walter said. "There just happens to be a lack of suitable races for him in Sydney at the moment."

"Despite this I am very happy with him and he is sure to come home with a good finishing burst."

Walter is using tomorrow's race as a build up to the George Main Stakes and an ultimate run in the Group One Epsom Handicap.

After that the talented five-year-old son of Dehere is set to join Spinning Hill in Melbourne.

"He is a chance for the Cox Plate," Walter confirmed. "But that will depend on how he goes up here in the next couple of starts."

r4defier.jpg (14773 bytes)"He's also a maybe for the Mackinnon Stakes," he added.

Walter will also be represented in the race by the handy performer Palladium Star. Big race rider Danny Beasley will partner the less fancied stable representative and they will jump from barrier eleven.

If Defier is to win tomorrow's race and confirm early favouritism for the Epsom Handicap he must overcome a three pronged attack from record breaking female trainer Gai Waterhouse.

The first lady of racing will saddle up the Doncaster Handicap winner Assertive Lad, the top sprinter Phoenix Park and the brilliant fresh performer Kingsgate in the Theo Marks.

John Hawkes also has three acceptors for the race. Gabfest, Salgado and Make Me A Miracle, who have all drawn awkwardly, represent the head trainer at Crown Lodge.

There should be plenty of pace in the race. As well as expected speed from Assertive Lad and Kingsgate, the Graeme Rogerson trained flying machine Century Kid is also set to run in the 1300 metre event.

PICS - Quentin Lang.

RACE 1: MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000M

PETTICAN was slow to begin and was then steadied away from the heels of WORTHY OF, which shifted in. ENTRY knuckled on jumping and lost ground. RAVEN SUCCESS began awkwardly and lost ground. Shortly after the start, OUR ENCOUNTER shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of TOUCH MOVE. Approaching the 800 metres MAJESTIC CHIMES hung out, resulting in BRIDPORT being taken out onto RONDINE, which was inconvenienced. LOST HIGHWAY hung out from the 700 metres until approaching the 300 metres. Trainer Mr B. Freebody was advised that a further warning would be placed against LOST HIGHWAY. PRINCE EMPIRE hung out at the point of the home turn and then continued to shift ground outwards whilst being placed under pressure. Trainer Mr G. Lunn stated that PRINCE EMPIRE returned with its tongue over the bit. A veterinary examination of PRINCE EMPIRE revealed a laceration beneath the tongue consistent with that horse getting its tongue over the bit. Notwithstanding this advice, Trainer Mr G. Lunn was advised that an official warning would now be placed on PRINCE EMPIRE. Near the 200 metres TOUCH MOVE was checked when disappointed for a run between RONDINE, which initially shifted out, and BRIDPORT, which shifted in slightly. PETTICAN shifted out abruptly approaching the winning post, resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced and having to stop riding and straighten.

RACE 3: CLASS FOUR PLATE 1200M

DAMAH LADY was slow to begin. Shortly after the start TORLINA was crowded to the inside of KENMARO, which was steadied away from the heels of TRAVESTAR (R. Saxton), which shifted in when not quite clear. Saxton was issued with a reprimand over this incident. After the 300 metres KENMARO which was weakening was checked when crowded between TORLINA and SHAGNEY MISS, both of which shifted some ground. A veterinary examination of KENMARO found that horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr K. Robinson was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to KENMARO being permitted to race again. Over the concluding stages, TRAVESTAR was inclined to lay in and raced in restricted room behind FRONTIER and to the inside of CALLABOU. Stewards considered an objection lodged by Apprentice W. Pearson (CALLABOU), placed third against EL SENORITA being declared the second place getter, alleging interference over the final 200 metres of the event. The evidence before the Stewards revealed that, after straightening, CALLABOU shifted out to meet EL SENORITA and both horses raced tight over the final 300 metres resulting in them coming together close to the winning post. As Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that, had this interference not occurred, CALLABOU would have beaten EL SENORITA to the line, the objection was dismissed.

Cahill was fined the sum of $200 under AR120(b). When questioned on the performance of CYCLONE FREDDY, rider J. Nisbet stated that his mount travelled only fairly throughout and, when the pace steadied in the middle stages of the event, he shifted out and attempted to improve. He added that, after straightening, his mount failed to find the line and, in his opinion, had been very disappointing. A veterinary examination of CYCLONE FREDDY revealed lacerations to the near hind fetlock and the nearside stifle.

After the 300 metres MARMALUKE was steadied away from the heels of HE’S SNOOPY when disappointed for a run. When questioned on the disappointing performance of THUNDER ZONE rider J. Ford stated that his mount did not travel well at any stage of the event and, when the pace of the race quickened passing the 700 metres, his mount was left flat-footed and failed to run on. Trainer Mr J. De Smet expressed disappointment with the performance of THUNDER ZONE and could offer no tangible explanation for today’s run. He further advised that it was now his intention to send THUNDER ZONE for a spell. A veterinary examination of THUNDER ZONE did not detect any abnormalities.

1st: RUSTIC CLOUD 2nd: HE’S SNOOPY 3rd: MARMALUKE 4th: SKIMMING

RACE 8: CLASS ONE HANDICAP 1200M

CITI JOY bounded on jumping. RADIANT IMAGE and GO TILL DAWN came together at the start. Near the 800 metres CITI JOY was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of KAPITZA. Near the 800 metres GUN WARRIOR and FRENCH JAZZ were hampered and carried wider when TRISTROLLY hung out. Rider J. Whitney could offer no tangible explanations for the performance of CITI JOY and stated that his mount never travelled well at any stage. A veterinary examination of CITI JOY did not detect any abnormalities. When questioned on the disappointing performance of ELDAMOUR rider G. Buckley stated that he was instructed to have the mare racing in a forward position. However, it failed to show the anticipated early pace and consequently got back further than intended. Near the 1000m SENSIBLE and METRO MAX were crowded by BIONIC NED which was racing a little tight to the inside of SNOOPS. After the 400m BIOKOVO raced up onto the heels of runners in front and could not be restrained. As a result it shifted out abruptly on the turn near that point, bumping QUEEN AMIDALA and then shifting out across the running of that mare which clipped the heels of BIOKOVO and almost fell, losing considerable ground. Trainer Mr W Pholi was told that a warning will be placed against BIOKOVO. Rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight SENSIBLE was held up for a run and after the 200m it had to be shifted out abruptly to improve.

Race 6 - OPEN HANDICAP 1300 METRES

MALTESE PAPIA and PROUD FORTUNE collided at the start. ANOTHER SOUTHERN began awkwardly, got its head up and lost ground. App M Spriggs (ANOTHER SOUTHERN) said that after the 900m the saddle on his mount slipped around to the near side, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. He added that near the 400m his mount shifted in and struck the running rail. Rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight GLINT OF HEART was held up behind tiring runners and was unable to improve. After the race FAITHLESS was found to be lame in the near foreleg. A veterinary examination found DEE'S ABLAZE to be moderately distressed with poor post race recovery and an elevated heart rate some time after the race. Trainer Mr G Kelly will be questioned on the post race condition of DEE'S ABLAZE. Becker was reprimanded for returning to scale in excess of his declared weight.

Kingsgate Leads Gai's Three Pronged Theo Marks Attack

Excellent fresh performer Kingsgate could be the pick of the three Gai Waterhouse runners in tomorrow's Group 2 $201,200 Rydges Parramatta Theo Mark Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill according to stable foreman Steve Brem.

Brem said all of Waterhouse's three runners - Assertive Lad, Phoenix Park and Kingsgate - had great chances, but he leaned toward the Lenny Beasley mount Kingsgate.

"He is a great fresh performer," Brem said. "And his form in Queensland including his excellent third in the Stradbroke looks good for the Theo Marks."

Connections were confident Assertive Lad would make a strong return to the track when he lines up in the Theo Marks.

"He has to carry a big weight and the wide barrier won't help, but we know he is a very classy performer."

"Gai has taken him along slowly and it's just great to have him back," Brem added. "We are taking one day at a time with him."

The stable's third representative in the Group Two event is the Brian York mount Phoenix Park.

"He's a proven big race horse," Brem told Cyberhorse. "He always looks a good chance in any race he contests."

"From barrier one he should get the run of the race for Brian (jockey Brian York)," he predicted.

The main stumbling block for the Waterhouse trio appears on paper to be Lonhro's last start conqueror Defier.

His trainer Guy Walter said he has been pleased with his progress since his last start, but there is one thing that does concern him regarding tomorrow's race.

"I guess I'm a bit concerned about the drop back in distance from his last race," Walter reported. "But I am very happy with him and he should be coming home hard at the end."

RACE 1: PREMIERSHIP WINNERS RACE DAY HANDICAP 1100M:

Hot Magic jumped away awkwardly. Likely Treasure had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Lucky Treasure revealed the gelding to have sustained a severe laceration to its near hind leg.

RACE 2: DARREN BEADMAN HANDICAP 1200M:

Mi Contessa, which was fractious in the gates, was passed fit prior to the start by the club’s veterinary surgeon. Mi Contessa and Strategic Gold were both buffeted for room on jumping between Moon Beam Kisses and Trevalsa, both of which shifted ground. Passing the 500M Del Riva had to be checked off the heels of Silver Success when Del Riva was inclined to hang out across that filly’s heels.
