Supplementary Report:
Rosehill Gardens Saturday 31 August 2002:

Race 7 Clipsal Peter Pan Stakes 1500m:

Following representations from licensed jockey M. Flaherty, the Stewards ruled that the period of suspension incurred by him will now commence on Monday 9 September and expire on Saturday 21 September 2002 on which day he may ride.

J. Innes (Master Veloce) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 300m he rode his mount out to improve to the outside of the heels of Ripcords in an endeavour to take a run between Ripcords and Humayun where there was insufficient room and as a result Humayun was buffeted for some distance between Master Veloce and Clangalang before being checked when taken out across the heels of Clangalang. J. Innes' licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 8 September 2002 and to expire on Friday 20 September 2002 on which day he may ride.

Race 8 Matador Bullbars Superfecta 1400m:

Trainer Mr P. Cave reported to the Stewards that Etoile Bleue had pulled up well following its somewhat disappointing effort. He stated that the mare was inclined to hang in and he would now experiment with a lugging bit.

Race 1

J. Innes on Vicissitude

Race 3

M. Cahill on Descendant

GENERAL:

The Stewards today heard a report from Stipendiary Steward Mr C. George following visits to the stables at 31 Oak Street, Rosehill, on Tuesday 27 August and Saturday 31 August 2002 that horses under the control of registered stablehand Mr S. Nicoletti were still present in those stables contrary to a direction given at an inquiry on 20 August 2002 that within seven days those horses were to be removed to the control of a licensed trainer or, alternatively, to a non-registered stable. Mr Nicoletti today was given a further official direction that the horses must be removed within 48 hours or he may be penalised.

RACE 1: Rockdale Maiden Plate 1200m:

An objection was lodged by D. Beadman, rider of 4th placegetter, Schlep, against So Assertive (L. Beasley) being declared 2nd placegetter alleging interference rounding the home turn. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, including J. Sheehan, rider of 3rd placegetter, Lookalike, and viewing the videos the Stewards dismissed the objection when they established that whilst So Assertive hung out rounding the home turn, Schlep did not fully establish a position between Lookalike and So Assertive before So Assertive shifted back in. Schlep was then tightened for room and eventually checked when Lookalike shifted out taking Schlep onto the hindquarter of So Assertive, which exacerbated the tightening when So Assertive was turned in. Schlep then was unable to obtain clear running until the 100m when shifted out after being crowded between Lookalike, which continued to lay out, and So Assertive. Aim To Fire, Dane Supply, Michelangelo and Cookstown Frankie were slow to begin. Leaving the 600m Michelangelo, which was racing greenly, had to be steadied off the heels of Toppear. A post-race veterinary examination of So Assertive did not reveal any abnormality. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Dane Supply had sustained abrasions to the near-side stifle and was displaying a poor recovery rate.

RACE 2: Kogarah Handicap 1600m:

Art Of War jumped awkwardly and bumped Royal Theatre. Arbitrage was slow to begin. Sesemann shifted in at the start crowding American Dame and Superiority. Near the 1000m Maximise, which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied from the heels of Kaptiza. For some distance leaving the 700m Royal Theatre had to be steadied when awkwardly placed on the heels of Maximise. A post-race veterinary examination of Leica Cumnock, which gave ground quickly on the home turn, did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 3: Arncliffe Handicap 1100m:

Secret Decree and Astute Girl were slow to begin. Near the 600m Mukka Damarto and Kianben were crowded between Gee Trump, which was inclined to lay in, and Astute Girl. A short distance later Cryptique was hampered when Ravenswood shifted out. Approaching the 900m Montchanin had to be steadied off the heels of Kianben (G. Boss), which shifted in. G. Boss was advised to be two lengths clear when shifting ground. Kwila was held up for some distance rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Secret Decree to have an elevated heart rate and to be displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr G. Portelli was advised that a veterinary certificate must be produced before Secret Decree is permitted to race again.

RACE 4: Carlton Handicap 1600m:

Talista Belle was a late withdrawal at 2.31pm after the mare dislodged its rider, C. Munce, leaving the enclosure and galloped for a considerable distance. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Talista Belle be refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 9¢ win, 10¢ place, 20¢ quinella, 9¢ multiple doubles. When questioned regarding the improved performance of Storm Force, Mr T. Bone, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, stated that the gelding, which had been disappointing on occasions, had worked well since its 9th of 11 placing at its last start at Royal Randwick on Wednesday 21 August 2002 and that a forward showing was anticipated.

RACE 5: Brighton Handicap 1200m:

C. Munce was examined by the club's doctor after being dislodged prior to race 4 and stood down from his engagement in this race. J. Innes was substituted as the rider of Our Jock. Parable was slow to begin. Leaving the 600m Parable was checked when tightened for room by Our Jock, which was taken in by Newbold (A. Abrahams), which shifted in when weakening. A. Abrahams was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves sufficient room for runners to his inside. On the home turn Calhoun was checked when crowded for room between Azraq and Unchain (B. Stanley), which shifted out. B. Stanley was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Newbold was displaying a poor recovery rate and a mild case of thumps. Trainer Mr P. McLeod stated that consideration would be given to spelling Newbold.

RACE 6: Bexley Handicap 1400m:

Razor Jane broke through the barriers prior to the start. After being inspected by the club's veterinary surgeon Razor Jane was passed fit to start. Cardiff Bay jumped awkwardly. On jumping Song Of Unbridled and Radiance Of Apollo were crowded between Redfern Lady, which was taken in by Razor Jane, and Queen's Suite. Cardiff Bay was held up for a run in the early part of the straight. Near the 200m Wedding Belle had to be steadied when Amourous shifted out slightly. Trainer Mr R. Quinton will be interviewed regarding Cardiff Bay racing back in the field.

RACE 7: Carlton Handicap 1600m:

Jadana struck the gate when leaving the enclosure, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. The Ares was a late withdrawal at 4.23pm on veterinary advice after that gelding was kicked by another runner whilst parading behind the barriers. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Ares be refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 9¢ win, 10¢ place, 20¢ quinella, 9¢ multiple doubles. At the barrier the nose roll was removed from Shawn's Glow when it was deemed not to be fitted properly. Dudley Do Right and Shawn's Glow were slow to begin. D. Beasley stated that Jadana, which was back in distance today from its last start 2nd at Royal Randwick on 10 August 2002 over 2400m, was not suited by the slow early pace and overraced in the early and middle stages. He added that when the race developed into a sprint home Jadana was left flatfooted and was unable to quicken, and in his opinion was racing like a horse in need of more ground.

RACE 8: Hurstville Handicap 2200m:

Mr K. Jordan, trainer of Black Anthem, was fined $400 after pleading guilty to a charge of neglect in having presented Black Anthem to race and having failed to include a lead bag that was part of the weigh (AR140A). Passing the 600m, after being bumped by Black Anthem, Royal Mews became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped Thirio, taking Thirio in behind the heels of Zulu Legend. Approaching the 200m, after initially being taken out by Black Anthem, Recover had to be steadied off the heels of Thirio, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Azzeal was displaying a poor recovery rate and also a case of thumps. Trainer Mr P. Perry will be interviewed as to the progress of Azzeal.

Weather: Fine
Track: Good

RACE 1: Cody Premium Outdoor Handicap 1100m:

J. Cassidy stated that his instructions were to have Choreograph up on the pace, but his mount missed the start when it was not standing properly. He added that he was then hampered in the first 200m when Sunday Joy, which was inclined to lay in, shifted in away from If You Say So. Shortly afterwards Sunday Joy, which was still inclined to lay in, got its head up when being checked off the heels of Tom Coureuse. J. Cassidy stated that he was hampered again at the 800m when Game Stats (P. Ferris) shifted in. P. Ferris was advised to exercise more care. J. Cassidy stated further that Choreograph was inclined to lay out throughout the event. At the entrance to the straight Sunday Joy was disappointed for a run between Son Of Pegasus and Tom Coureuse (D. Beasley), which shifted out. D. Beasley was advised to exercise care. Sunday Joy continued to lay in and proved difficult to ride in the straight. At the 250m If You Say So was crowded for room between Choreograph and Summer Eyes, both of which shifted ground.

RACE 2: Mamma Mia! Plate 2000m:

Hot Music stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer Mr J. Morrisey was advised that a warning would be placed on Hot Music. Crimewave was slow to begin. Near the 200m Spirit Of The Nite was disappointed for a run between Chanova and Crimewave, which shifted out. Cuchulainn's Leap was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Newington Style lost its near-hind plate during running. Mr F. Cleary trainer of Newington Style, which raced disappointingly, indicated that the gelding would now be spelled.

RACE 3: Winning Edge Presentations Stakes 1100m:

Pompeii was slow to begin. Fatoon shifted in at the start taking Mica's Pride in on to Quest For Success. Rounding the first turn Rare Insight ran out badly taking Lismore out on to Moonflute. Rare Insight continued to hang out for the remainder of the race. B. York (Fatoon) stated that Fatoon never travelled well and was a beaten horse at the entrance to the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Fatoon was displaying a poor recovery rate. Trainer Mr Conners undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Fatoon in the days subsequent.

RACE 4: Hyland Sportswear Premier's Cup 1900m:

Abeel Hostess and Halls Of Assembly were slow to begin. Approaching the first turn Bondi Iceberg had to be steadied off the heels of Chinhoyi, which was taken in by Mouthwash. At the entrance to the straight Dress Circle was disappointed for a run between Mouthwash and Time Off, which shifted out. G. Boss, rider of 5th placegetter, No Limit, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the finish. Stewards inquired into the improved performance of the winner, Gamesman, as compared to its 12th placing at Rosehill Gardens on 17 August 2002. On that occasion rider L. Beasley stated that he had to make use of the gelding to take up a forward position and with four weeks between runs Gamesman had not run out the 1900m journey. Trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse today advised the Stewards that in her view the most significant factor was the 4kg drop in weight.

RACE 5: Vinery Stud Handicap 1200m:

Trencher was slow to begin. On jumping Valkyrian shifted out and hampered Danny Dancer. At the 1100m Valkyrian hung in causing To Be Fair to be hampered and taken in on to Cosmic Ray. Cosmic Rays then shifted in away from To Be Fair resulting in Go Errol being checked. Mississippi River shifted out from behind Patch Adams in the early part of the straight bumping Stella Maree. For some distance in the early part of the straight Trencher and Time Deposit came together as Trencher endeavoured to improve between Valkyrian and Time Deposit. Trencher was then held up for some distance thereafter. At the 200m Go Errol shifted out taking Olivier wider. D. Beasley (Mississippi River) stated that in his opinion Mississippi River was reluctant to race inside horses and performed disappointingly as a result. He added that although Mississippi River suffered severe interference at the 100m the gelding was a beaten horse at the time. A post-race veterinary examination of Mississippi River did not reveal any abnormality. B. Stanley (Danny Dancer) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 100m he commenced to improve between Patch Adams and Mississippi River, which resulted in Mississippi River being badly buffeted between Patch Adams and Stella Maree and in turn causing Stella Maree to be taken out on to Valkyrian. B. Stanley's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 7 September 2002 and to expire on Friday 20 September 2002 on which day he may ride.

RACE 6: TJF Group Concorde Stakes 1100m:

Gabfest was held up for a run for some distance passing the 150m. Near the 70m Phoenix Park and Into The Night came together due to both horses shifting ground.

RACE 7: Clipsal Peter Pan Stakes 1500m:

Polar North was a late scratching at 8.33am on veterinary advice. An objection was lodged by B. Stanley, rider of 4th placegetter, Maskerado, against Clangalang being declared 3rd alleging interference 200m after the start and again on the first turn. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and also from R. Thompson, rider of Bullala, the Stewards dismissed the objection when they found that although Clangalang shifted in at the 1300m causing Maskerado to be checked, they could not be satisfied it had a material bearing on the finishing positions of the respective horses. The Stewards deemed that on the first turn Maskerado ran up and had to be checked off the heels of Clangalang when that horse steadied rounding that turn. At a subsequent inquiry M. Flaherty (Clangalang) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1300m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Maskerado, which resulted in Maskerado being checked and taken in onto Bullala and losing its rightful running. In this incident Platinum Scissors, which was racing to the inside of Bullala, was also hampered. M. Flaherty's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 8 September and to expire on Saturday 21 September 2002 on which day he may ride. Recruiting was slow to begin. Shortly after the start Maskerado had to steady off the heels of Master Veloce when taken out by Bullala. Clangalang, which was following, was hampered in consequence. Rounding the first turn Ripcords, which was overracing, had to be steadied off the heels of Sportsman. Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, stated that it had been the intention to ride Takas in a forward position, however, when trapped wide jockey D. Beadman was obliged to go to the lead in order to be closer to the fence. After being bumped by Maskerado at the entrance to the straight, Recruiting shifted out and hampered Sunny Riviera. Near the 150m Sunny Riviera was inclined to lay out and made contact with Sportsman. An inquiry into the reason for Humayun being buffeted for some distance between Master Veloce and Clangalang near the 300m was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

RACE 8: Matador Bullbars Superfecta 1400m:

Black Ale shifted out at the start taking Impregnable out onto Rose Beat, which was severely checked when tightened onto the hindquarters of Etoile Bleue. B. Cooper stated that her instructions had been to find cover on The Man, however, she was obliged to go forward and lead when trapped wide. Trainer Mr V. P. Sutherland indicated that The Man would be ridden more quietly at its next start. S. Marshall (County Tyrone) stated that his mount did not show any dash and in his opinion is looking for further ground. App. N. Cumberland (Johnny Reb) was reprimanded for directing the line of This Manshood across the field after travelling 200m. App. N. Cumberland was reprimanded further for permitting his mount to shift in near the 100m, which resulted in This Manshood, which had been badly held up for a run, being taken in onto Deranged, which was buffeted between This Manshood and The Man. Trainer Mr P. Cave will be interviewed regarding the performance of Etoile Bleue and asked to report on the mare's progress in the days subsequent.

Million dollar yearling Stanford has showed plenty of fight in his first win in the Sterling Estates Maiden Handicap (1400m) at Kensington in Sydney yesterday afternoon.

Sold at the 2001 Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney for $1.1 million, the son of Danehill is now is the stables of racing’s first lady Gai Waterhouse.

Bred by the Sangster family’s Swettenham Stud, the colt was sold in a quality packed draft from Collingrove Stud.

A half brother to the brilliant Group winner Sarson Trail, Stanford is out of the top producing broodmare Rossignol.

Yesterday was Stanford’s third start and his victory had followed two strong fourth placings in city events.

The well named galloper Wide Awake made good late ground to grab second place.

Waterhouse has a good opinion of Stanford and he is among a swag of quality entries for October's Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne.

Supplementary Report:

Gosford Thursday 22 August 2002: Race 3 Moneywise Ladies Handicap (Maiden) 1100m:

The Stewards today concluded an inquiry into B. Cooper’s riding on Inter Power with particular reference to her riding in the straight. B. Cooper explained that after straightening she positioned her mount behind Yiasou Melbourne to take a narrow run to the inside of that runner. When Yiasou Melbourne commenced to shift back to the fence approaching the 200m she reconsidered that option with a view to improving to that horse’s outside. However, in the lead-up to this point Princess Marwina was racing tight to her outside and she was concerned that if she had shifted it may have resulted in interference to that runner. She stated that Inter Power was improving steadily and approaching the 200m commenced to improve quicker than she anticipated. At the same time Yiasou Melbourne began to give ground and consequently she ran on to the heels of that runner, checked and shifted out. Whilst noting B. Cooper’s explanations the Stewards nevertheless were of the view that she had erred in not availing herself of either run when the opportunity arose.

Near the 4300m Wicked Wizard, which was giving ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded by Avenue Tolda, which shifted in slightly. A. Huke (Waaria) was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift out on the home turn resulting in Unbridled’s Jest becoming crowded for room and having to steady. Prefix was unable to obtain clear running in the straight and consequently was not fully tested.

RACE 3: Whirlpool – Retravision Maiden Plate 1200m

Acting on veterinary advice that Dark Dane was lame in the near-fore foot the Stewards permitted its withdrawal at 7.49am. Peter James hung out in the middle stages. Opted and Masonette were slow to begin. L. Henry (Victoria’s Joy) was reprimanded for allowing her mount to shift out near the 200m when not clear of Fields Of Thunder, resulting in that gelding having to be steadied. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Legless Again, which weakened in the straight, to be displaying signs of tying up behind and mild respiratory distress. Trainer Mr N. Mayfield-Smith undertook to report if there was anything amiss with the mare in the days subsequent.

RACE 4: NEC – Retravision Maiden Plate 1000m

A post-race veterinary examination of Distort did not reveal any abnormality. Shortly after the start Trafford was crowded between Dazzling Gold and Keshana, both of which shifted ground. Near the 600m Desert Heights and Dazzling Gold made contact due to Dazzling Gold shifting out from behind Elzabad to improve.

RACE 6: Fisher & Paykel – Retravision Class 4 Plate 1400m

Approaching the 200m Theaminda, which was attempting to improve into a narrow run between Campaignor and Magic Dream, was checked when disappointed for that run when Campaignor shifted in slightly and Magic Dream (App. R. Freeman) shifted out. App. Freeman was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances she would be expected to stop riding and straighten her mount.

RACE 7: Haier – Retravision Metro Group Transitional Handicap 1000m

Reef King jumped awkwardly. Pastime was slow to begin. Sudden Gold did not obtain clear running in the straight. Reef King raced in restricted room to the inside of Grand Estime over the final 200m and was unable to be fully tested. When questioned, C. Munce (Call Me Henry) stated that with the fast early pace he was unable to keep in touch and got further back than anticipated. He said that approaching the 400m his mount was not travelling well enough to maintain its position behind Please and consequently Pastime, which was racing to his inside, was able to shift in front of him. He added that as a result, rounding the home turn he was then caught inside the heels of Please and unable to improve around that runner and consequently he did not obtain clear running in the straight and Call Me Henry went to the line untested.

RACE 8: Simpson Kelvinator – Retravision Class 1 Handicap 1200m
