NSW TRB Stewards yesterday inquired into incidents involving licensed stablehand Mr Luke Waters, and licensed trainer Mr John O'Shea, which occurred on Monday, 12 August 2002.

Mr Waters was fined $200 under LR16 for having entered the stables of Mr O'Shea in High Street, Randwick, at 6am on the morning of Monday, 12 August 2002 without the permission of Mr O'Shea, who was absent at the time due to trackwork commitments.

Stewards heard that after having a conversation at approximately 9am with Mr O'Shea at his stables, Mr Waters again contacted Mr O'Shea via telephone at 6pm on Monday, 12 August 2002, and sought to raise an issue that had been determined by the Stewards in September, 2001.

At that time, following a complaint from a stable employee of Mr O'Shea, Mr Waters was obliged to apologise for having made a remark containing racial overtones to that employee at the equine pool at Royal Randwick racecourse.

Today, Mr Waters was given a direction under AR8(e) that he must not contact Mr O'Shea relative to the aforementioned matters otherwise he may be subject to disciplinary action.

Stewards recommended to Mr Waters that he consider seeking professional counselling as it was obvious that he has some difficulty accepting closure of that matter.

GENERAL:

After riding in race 1 D. Beadman was examined by the club's medical officer and stood down

from his remaining engagements. The following rider substitutions were approved:
Race 2 S. Marshall on Prime Century
Race 3 C. Brown on Prince Shep
Race 4 R. Quinn on Dolphicate
Race 5 L. Beasley on Fiammarosa
Race 6 R. Quinn on The Stab
Race 7 R. Quinn on Zeltrice
Race 8 R. Quinn on Catch Me Mate

RACE 1: Eastlakes Handicap 1600m:

White Fuji and Order Arms, which were late arriving due to a float breakdown en route to the course, were examined by the club's veterinarian surgeon and passed fit to start.

Great Cyrus began awkwardly and then blundered.

Tornado Kid (D. Beadman) pulled hard in the early stages, resulting in the saddle shifting forward near the 1200m and eventually D. Beadman retired that runner approaching the home turn.

RACE 2: Alexandria Handicap 1000m:

Proprietor jumped awkwardly and then shifted in hampering Stella Regale.

Jesterette knuckled over on jumping.

Approaching the 600m Dial Tones was inclined to lay in and had to be steadied from the heels of Dane Supply.

Tengpoche hung out rounding the home turn resulting in Proprietor, which was endeavouring to improve between Tengpoche and Prime Century, which shifted in slightly, having to be checked off the heels of Tengpoche.

Close to the finish line Splish and Dane Supply came together.

A post-race veterinary examination of Proprietor, which after racing forward did not run on in the straight, revealed the colt to be displaying a poor recovery rate and to have abraded its off-hind bumper. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr P. Perry undertook to report to Stewards the results of a full veterinary check.

RACE 3: Malabar Handicap 1100m:

Tonosama jumped awkwardly.

Passing the 900m Real Dream was momentarily taken in by My Woodie, which resulted in Riu having to be steadied and then run out across the heels of Real Dream.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Riu, which raced very disappointingly, was suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Mr G. Lee, representing trainer Mr J. Lee, was advised that before Riu is permitted to race again the results of an ECG must be furnished and then the gelding must trial satisfactorily and undergo a further veterinary check following the trial.

RACE 4: Botany Maiden Plate (1 st Division) 1400m:

About the 1100m Beata shifted in away from Helissia and made contact with the running rail.

Helissia was held up for a run in the early part of the straight.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Wicked Wizard, J. Sheehan could offer no excuse other than from his favourable barrier he made use of the gelding to race in a forward position, and in his opinion Wicked Wizard may be better ridden more quietly.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Wicked Wizard to be displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken.

RACE 5: Botany Maiden Plate (2 nd Division) 1400m:

Kiwi Cruiser shifted in shortly after the start and bumped Sesemann.

Wild Heart hung out in the middle stages.

Approaching the 1000m The Cedars had to steady off the heels of Sierra Dane (D. Beasley), which shifted in.

Cabinda, which was following, was hampered in consequence.

D. Beasley was advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.

For some distance after straightening Sierra Dane and Stanford bumped as Sierra Dane endeavoured to improve to the outside of Fiammarosa, which was inclined to drift out under pressure.

Passing the 200m Sierra Dane then shifted back across the heels of Fiammarosa to obtain clear running.

L. Beasley (Fiammarosa) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out crossing the finishing line resulting in Stanford being checked and Wild Heart being hampered.

L. Beasley was advised as this was the second occasion in recent times on which his riding had caused concern regarding his control of his mount after the winning post, he was now placed on notice that he may be penalised unless he exercises more care.

RACE 6: Surry Hills Handicap 2400m:

Approaching the 600m, when Royal Mews improved to the inside of the heels of Bello Signor, Travellin' Blues was crowded for room and obliged to check.

Azzeal was badly held up in the early part of the straight.

Master Maestro was held up until near the 200m.

When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of Travellin' Blues, L. Beasley stated that his mount began very awkwardly and appeared to get on itself from behind. L. Beasley stated that as a result of this incident his mount raced further back than intended and was never travelling kindly.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Travellin' Blues had sprung its near-fore plate and was displaying a poor recovery rate. A swab sample was taken. Ms E. Candy, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, undertook to report to Stewards if there was anything amiss with Travellin' Blues following the race.

RACE 7: Destination Management Companies Handicap 1800m:

An objection was lodged by C. Brown, rider of 2 nd placegetter, Abeel Hostess, against Kesia (J. Grisedale) being declared the winner alleging interference near the 300m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the videos the Stewards upheld the objection when they found that near the 300m as Abeel Hostess made its run to the inside of Kesia, Kesia shifted in causing Abeel Hostess to be checked and have to come to the outside of that runner to obtain clear running. The placings were amended as follows: 1 st Abeel Hostess, 2 nd Kesia, 3 rd Zeltrice.

At a subsequent inquiry J. Grisedale pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) and his licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday 26 August and to expire on Friday 6 September on which day he may ride.

Garden Scene overraced in the middle stages and had to be restrained from the heels of Spirit Of The Nite.

Spirit Of The Nite got its head up when being restrained in the early stages and in the straight experienced difficulty obtaining clear running.

An inquiry was opened into App. G. Scimone's riding of Spirit Of The Nite and in particular into why he had not shifted out approaching the 600m when Garden Scene improved to his outside. After taking evidence from App. Scimone in the presence of his master's nominated representative, Mr J. Pride, and from Mr A. Cummings, stable foreman to trainer Mr B. Cummings, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

RACE 8: Potts Point Handicap 1400m:

Casual Story (J. Cassidy) was a late withdrawal at 4.42pm when J. Cassidy sustained an injury to his leg. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Casual Story be refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 4¢ win, 5¢ place, 8¢ quinella, 4¢ multiple doubles.

Storm Force was slow to begin.

WEATHER: FINE
TRACK: GOOD
RAIL: TRUE

RACE – 1 – TRANSITIONAL HANDICAP 1200 METRES

D COLEMAN, rider of ANOTHER SOUTHERN, said his mount was slow to begin and was subsequently further back in the filed then intended. He added that he was momentarily held up approaching the hometurn, which allowed the leaders to skip away and his mare took some time to regain her momentum. Approaching the 150 metres MORINGA’S ORIENTAL was momentarily crowded when YES DOES (P G BIRNEY) shifted in slightly. Jockey BIRNEY was advised to use more care.

RACE – 2 – CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1000 METRES

AMPLIFIED was awkward to begin. MUKANIC overraced early and raced awkwardly with its head in the air. Approaching the hometurn the gelding again got its head up when momentarily held up and was shifted out to obtain a clear run. M CRAWFORD, rider of ROMAN COUNTY, advised he dropped his whip near the 300 metres. G COLLESS, rider of NEMOV, reported his saddle shifted near the 500 metres and approaching the 400 metres he kicked both feet out of his irons. He added although he was placed at some disadvantage, he was able to ride his mount out. Due to some soreness after the race G COLLESS forfeited the remainder of his rides. Near the 150 metres MORINGA BLUE was steadied when crowded by NEMOV, which shifted in. Considering the circumstances no direct action was taken against G COLLESS, however, he was issued with a severe reprimand and was advised despite the circumstances a repetition may result in more direct action being taken.

RACE – 3 – CLASS 1 HANDICAP (F & M) 1000 METRES

FAIRY QUEEN bounded in the air at the start and bumped TELL YOU TRUE. LITTLE PIG made the first turn awkwardly. LIMERICK LACE was slow to begin and then was held up and unable to improve from rounding the hometurn until near the 50 metres.

RACE – 4 – MAIDEN PLATE (DIV 2) 1400 METRES

APP H O’HARA, rider of STAND TO OVATION, which was pulled up out of the race, reported her mount jumped awkwardly and then commenced to hang out severely. A post race vet exam revealed lacerations to the right fore and hind leg and its right fore plate shifted. Trainer P WHEATLEY was advised STAND TO OVATION must trial prior to racing again. A post race vet examination of LA BERET revealed the filly suffered lacerations to both hind legs and was shin sore in the right fore leg. When questioned as to why MELVA MAY raced in a rearward position, as opposed to its previous few starts, jockey G BAKER explained, although he was instructed to race handy the mare failed to show her usual speed so he elected to pull back and take up a position closer to the rails. He added once he obtained that position he was then awkwardly placed and crowded to the inside of TOO DARK, which shifted in slightly. He added he was able to move forward from the 500 metres but had difficulty avoiding FIRE ANT, which was shifting ground. Trainer P SMITH said although he expected MELVA MAY to be racing in a more handy position he accepted the reasons presented by

G BAKER and was happy with the mares run. BAKER and SMITH were advised that their explanations will be noted. They were further advised that after the Stewards review betting records and the evidence already presented they may be required to answer further questions.

RACE – 5 – MAIDEN PLATE (DIV 1) 1400 METRES

ALMIGHTY STIRRER was slow to begin. OF ARABIA was carried wide rounding the 1200 metres turn. MISS ENTREVEAUX overraced in the middle stages and was steadied away from the heels of WORTHY REWARD. MEMPHIS TENNESSEE was unable to obtain a clear run in the straight and went to the line without being tested. A post race vet exam of WHO’S ALICE revealed the mare bled. Trainer

L SCHMIDT was advised of the provisions under AR 53A(4). APP Z PURTON was fined $200 under AR 142, for failing to weigh in on OF ARABIA, which finished third. He was further severely reprimanded, under AR 83(a) for comments made on leaving the Stewards Room.

RACE – 6 – CLASS 1 (E & G) HANDICAP 1000 METRES

G BAKER replaced C FRANKLIN (overweight) as the rider of SILVER MAC. C FRANKLIN was subsequently fined $100 under AR 120(b). After arriving at the barriers SPANKSTER was inspected by the vet who reported the gelding to be lame in the right hind leg. Acting on that report SPANKSTER was declared a late withdrawal at 3:38pm with the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket paid less 23 cents win, 18 cents place. All money invested on SPANKSTER was refunded in full. Rounding the hometurn VE EYE PE (C SMALL), which was hanging in badly, shifted in and crowded LUCKY EYES, which was checked. When C SMALL attempted to relieve the pressure, he shifted out and hampered PERSONAL LOOK and DARTANYON. Considering the circumstances no action was taken, however, C SMALL was advised to use more care.

RACE – 7 – CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1400 METRES

After arriving on course PROUD FORTUNE was examined by the vet who reported the gelding suffered a minor laceration to its left nostril whilst en-route to the races, however, was fit to start.  On leaving the saddling enclosure TUNISIA bumped its right hip on the gate. The mare was examined by the vet and was passed fit to start.

RACE – 8 – CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1510 METRES

IT’S GRAND blundered at the start, was then crowded and lost ground. Near the 1000 metres SUMMER WALTZ (NZ) was checked when racing to the inside of HEAVENLY SONNET and SNOOPS. As there was no conclusive evidence, no direct action taken, however, all riders involved were asked to take more care. When questioned into the reason WIMBLEDON HERO raced back in the field as opposed to its previous two starts APP D GAY said he was instructed to do so and was not aware of the geldings recent racing pattern. Trainer B THORNTON will be questioned at a later date.

0807redouteschoice.jpg (18605 bytes)Redoute's Choice's full brother Platinum Scissors has scored an impressive win at his second start in Sydney today.

A member of the powerful Gai Waterhouse stable, Platinum Scissors is by the champion sire Danehill and out of the winning Canny Lad mare Shantha's Choice.

After settling back in the field in the Eastlakes Handicap (1600m), Jim Cassidy was able to click the colt up and he worked home stylishly for a comprehensive win.

On the line the Danehill colt held a significant advantage over the White Fuji, while the favourite Ikebana weakened to third after leading in the early stages.

On debut the colt finished sixth behind one of today's rivals Shigeru Ausie Star, but he had little luck and raced greenly. With natural improvement and today's extra journey the colt proved much too strong.

Platinum Scissors is the third named foal of Shantha's Choice. The colt has two full relations still to hit the track including a two-year-old who's been named Superior Sateen.

The mare's current yearling, a bay filly, has already been named. She will be known as Monsoon Wedding.

Shantha's Choice is currently in foal to the Kentucky Derby champion Fusaichi Pegasus, who's first Australian foals are being born this season.

Redoute's Choice, who's now standing at Arrowfield Stud for $33,000, was a four time Group One winner. He won the Blue Diamond Stakes, Manikato Stakes, Caulfield Guineas and CF Orr Stakes.

In all Redoute's Choice started ten times for five wins, one second and third thirds for earnings of $1,567,850. His first crop of yearlings will hit the sales scene next year.

NSW TRB Stewards yesterday opened an inquiry into the Analysts finding of 16 beta hydroxy stanozolol in the urine sample taken from Sir Redford following its win in Race 5 (Blacktown Workers Club Handicap) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 29 June 2002.

Evidence yesterday was taken from trainer and managing part-owner Mr Mack Griffith. Dr C. Suann, NSW TRB Senior Official Veterinarian, and Mr A. Stenhouse, Official Analyst, ARFL, assisted the inquiry.

Mr Griffith tendered evidence of stanozolol having been administered to Sir Redford by his veterinarian on the day following its 2nd placing at Warwick Farm on 2 June, 2002, with a view to Sir Redford being prepared for the Grafton carnival.

Mr Griffith later changed plans and started Sir Redford 26 days after the administration of stanozolol, which was two days inside the withholding period recommended by his veterinarian.

Mr Griffith pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(h)(ii) of having caused to be administered to the racehorse Sir Redford a prohibited substance, namely, stanozolol, a metabolite of which was detected in the sample taken from that horse following its win.

Mr Griffith was fined $6,000.

In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account that this was the first offence in Mr Griffiths 16-year training career.

Acting under the powers of AR177 Sir Redford was disqualified from its 1st placing and the Stewards amended the placings for the Blacktown Workers Club Handicap to read as follows:

1st Oh She Said, 2nd Pointy Stick, 3rd Noble Sultan, 4th Redfern Lady, 5th Kid Millions.
