Supplementary Report:

Royal Randwick Saturday 10 August 2002: Race 2 AJC convention Centre Handicap 1600m:

Trainer Mr P. Sutherland was interviewed regarding the performance of Polar North and stated that he did not believe his instructions were unduly binding and in similar circumstances would expect the rider to show more initiative.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As D. McLellan was indisposed due to an injury sustained at Muswellbrook races on Tuesday 13 August the following substitutions were made: Race 3 B. Stanley on Ile De France; Race 6 S. Marshall on Beamer; Race 7 J. Cassidy on Love This Citi; Race 8 J. Cassidy on Marslanding.

RACE 1: Canterbury Leagues Club Handicap 1100m

Magic World was slow to begin. Parapente hung in badly throughout the early stages. Trumps was inclined to hang in under pressure in the straight. At the 700m Template was hampered when crowded by Trumps, which was inclined to lay in away from Stratica. A post-race veterinary examination of Move It Or Lose It did not reveal any abnormality. App. M. Cant (Parapente) was reminded of his obligations regarding the use of the whip on a horse out of contention.

RACE 2: Good Guys Bankstown Handicap 1100m

Newcastle Crown jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Force Apollo, and a short distance later was crowded when How I Wonder shifted in. Gladiada, which was held up for a run rounding the home turn, was disappointed for a run to the inside of Force Apollo, which shifted in approaching the 100m. Close to the finish line Gladiada and Newcastle Crown were steadied when held up on the heels of Force Apollo. Trainer Ms L. Aspros was fined $100 for failing to present the Document of Description for Newcastle Crown.

RACE 3: Progressive Investment Securities Handicap 1550m

Dream Beauty was slow to begin.

On jumping Lapwing was tightened for room between Villeroy and Win Here Win There, which shifted in. Forum Floozie was unable to obtain clear running in the straight. Miss Tornado suffered a bleeding attack and will incur the mandatory three-month ban (AR53A).

RACE 5: On The Spot Tyres Handicap 1250m

Throwdown jumped awkwardly. At the 700m Cut It Out clipped the heels of Incident (App. M. Travers), which shifted in. App. Travers was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.

RACE 6: Bradley Australia Handicap 1250m

Stylish Crown overraced in the middle stages. Rounding the home turn Bull Finch, which was inclined to lay in away from Stylish Crown, shifted in taking Ya Ya Effendi in onto Forbill, which struck the running rail. When questioned regarding his ride on Bull Finch, R. Quinn stated that his instructions were not to bustle the gelding early and to allow the gelding to settle in a position where it was most comfortable. He stated that Bull Finch began reasonably well, but was beaten for pace. He added that whilst over the concluding stages Bull Finch worked home reasonably well, the gelding was inclined to lay in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, River To Me, trainer Ms D. Poidevin-Lane stated that at its most recent start at Warwick Farm on 31 July the gelding began awkwardly and then was not competitive when it got a long way back in the field. She stated that the gelding's previous start when it finished 3rd at Kembla Grange on 20 July had been encouraging and whilst disappointed with the Warwick Farm effort she felt the improvement today was principally due to River To Me racing closer to the speed.

RACE 7: Adco Constructions Handicap 1900m

Lady Sharmi broke through the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Gifted Royal was inclined to hang in throughout. Leaving the 600m Blue Arctic was disappointed for a run between Arcadian Prince and Captain Daylight. Blue Arctic had to shift out across heels in the early part of the straight to obtain clear running. B. York (Captain Daylight) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 450m after initially being taken out by Master Maestro he allowed his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear resulting in Arcadian Prince and then Gifted Royal losing their rightful running and having to be checked. In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account the contribution of Master Maestro. B. York's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on 18/8/02 and to expire on 29/8/02 on which day he may ride. When questioned concerning the performance of Love This Citi, J. Cassidy stated that he had not intended to lead, but when nothing else went forward he allowed his mount to cross Thirio. He added that Love This Citi overraced throughout the early and middle stages in the lead and as a result weakened in the straight. Trainer Mr. J. Morish stated that in his view the manner in which Love This Citi was obliged to race was the principal factor in the gelding performing below par. He added that Love This Citi is best suited when able to be ridden with cover. C. Brown, rider of 2 nd placegetter, Blue Arctic, was fined $200 for weighing in 1kg over his declared weight (AR145).

RACE 8: Hy-Tec Concrete Superfecta 1550m

Hot Music was slow to begin. Tyrrell hung out rounding the home turn. A. Banks (Colosseum) lost the near-side iron in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Royal Heir, which raced disappointingly, did not reveal any abnormality.

He said that from that point he was unable to ride with any vigour due to the mare’s waywardness and passing the 200M when he was able to place SAVING TIME under some pressure with the whip, the mare failed to respond and ran to the finish, in his opinion, in a disappointing manner. Licensed foreman, Mr C Swan, deputising for trainer Mr M Lees said that a forward showing was expected from SAVING TIME today and could offer no explanation for the poor performance. He said that in his opinion SAVING TIME had pulled up well, however he was unsure of Mr Lees’ plans for SAVING TIME’s future preparation. Thorn Park, a son of the exciting young stallion Spinning World, has scored two sizzling wins from as many starts and he is being set for a possible spring tilt in Melbourne.

Mr. Bureaucrat, a multiple Group winner last season in Queensland, is returning to the track and he is among 172 entries for October's Group One Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. Thorn Park is also entered for the Cox Plate.

Adrian Robinson will ride Mr. Bureaucrat in the gallop, while Darren Beadman will again be in the saddle of Thorn Park.

It was as much an air show as a race meeting when 4,000 people - and 27 aircraft - descended on the Outback town of Louth (normal population 30) at the week-end for the first race meeting of the 2002 Outback Racing Trail.

And what a week-end for the Louth Turf Club and western racing.

"We sold $13,300 worth of stubbie holders, caps and t-shirts to a great crowd of very generous race patrons," a jubilant Club Vice President, Don LeLievre, said.

"It was an unbelievably good meeting with a total of 63 horses entered," Don added.

The race crowd at the tiny Darling River Outback town about 130 kilometres north-west of Cobar was up about 1,000 on last year.

The seven-race meeting carried $51,000 in prize money and trophies.

NSW Country Racing Council Chief Executive, Brian Judd, points out that the "Trail" is part of a concept of "theme meetings" the CRC is focusing on developing through its seed funding programme throughout the State during the next 12 months.

The "Trail" promises an event to suit every Outback traveller - and the racing is a real rollcall of great Outback towns - Louth, Nyngan, Enngonia, Collarenebri, Bourke, Warren, Broken Hill and Brewarrina.

"Louth has been a great start to the inaugural "Outback Racing Trail" and we’re expecting good support for the next three Outback meetings in the series: Nyngan on August 24, Enngonia on September 7 and Bourke on October 5," Brian Judd added.

"This is a wonderful opportunity during the Year of the Outback for people who may never have been bush before to combine that experience with a great day at the races.

"Every Australian should try to share in the great bush hospitality on offer."

Flying Florida Stars in San Domenico

Brilliant Queensland youngster Star of Florida made today's San Domenico Stakes a one act affair, by winning the Group Two feature in little more than a canter.

The Pat Duff trained son of Telesto burst to the front early and then hardly got into second gear as he cruised to a one and a quarter length win.

Melbourne based jockey Patrick Payne barely raised a sweat as the speed sensation burst away from his rivals and then held out a vain challenge from the country galloper Chocolate Starfish.

An expected match race with fellow Queenslander and Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal didn't eventuate. The daughter of Clang put in a shocker, finishing second last in the field of eight.

While Star of Florida ($2.10 fav) gave favourite punters plenty to cheer about, fans of quinellas and trifectas were rocked when the placings were filled by Chocolate Starfish ($101) and Athelnoth ($81).

Star of Florida made a huge impression when he easily won a trial on March 5, but connections were alarmed when it was noticed the horse had bled and he suffered a mandatory three month ban.

Should the brilliant proposition bleed again he would be banned from racing in Australia, but his career certainly wouldn't be over. As his name suggests, the three-year-old is owned in Florida in the United States. Bleeders are permitted to race there upon receiving appropriate medication.
