The Hi-Fert Agrigrain Narromine Gold Cup lived up to its reputation at the weekend as Western New South Wales racing’s most colourful day.

"Many among the crowd of about 1000 were not traditional racegoers so we’re delighted that more members of the general community took up our invitation to enjoy what these new, fun-style, race days have to offer," says June Clark, Secretary of the Narromine Turf Club.

"The Gold Cup winning horse El Tempestad was brought down from Cunnamulla which shows the growing level of interest in our new-style meeting," June Clark added.

"Thanks to our new sponsor, Agrigrain, a stalwart of our rural community, and the New South Wales Country Racing Council, we were able to add a Busker’s Festival to the Sunday meeting."

The addition of the Busker’s Fesitval to the Gold Cup meeting was developed through the NSW Country Racing Council’s seed-funding programme that helps clubs to develop and market feature race days. "In addition to some great racing, racegoers were able to enjoy a real family day out that included stilt walkers, trick dogs, jugglers and clowns," June Clark said.

The Hi-Fert Agrigrain Narromine Gold Cup meeting was one of the first of the new feature race days to be held and is part of a lead up to the 2002 Outback Racing Trail.

It’s time to roll your swag and hit the track for the "Trail" which promises an event to suit every Outback traveller – from the appeal of camping on the banks of the Darling River for the famous Louth Races to enjoying the art galleries of Broken Hill as part of a Silver City racing holiday. And the racing is a real rollcall of great Outback towns – Louth, Nyngan, Enngonia, Collarenebri, Bourke, Warren, Broken Hill and Brewarrina. The series of race meetings gets underway at Louth on August 10 and finishes at Brewarrina on November 16.

Ten (10) swab samples were taken from various runners at random.

RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE 1200 METRES:

BE QUICK missed the start. Near the 900M STAR FLICKER ran onto the heels of COSMIC JESS, had to be steadied and lost ground. An inquiry into the reason SILK LINED blundered and dislodged its rider passing the 700M was adjourned until J Flanagan, who was transported by ambulance to Tamworth Base Hospital, was available to attend an inquiry. KAYSEAN D’SUNSHINE, which was following SILK LINED at that point, had to be checked severely and lost considerable ground.

RACE 4: CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1400 METRES:

RACY AFFAIR and FASTING missed the start. When questioned in relation to the altered riding tactics adopted on MAC’S SEATTLE, trainer Mr T Martin explained that although MAC’S SEATTLE had been racing in a forward position at its most recent starts, he felt that the gelding was disadvantaged when ridden in this fashion if the gelding had to be pressured in the early and middle stages to achieve this forward position. He said that he instructed his rider today to allow MAC’S SEATTLE to race in the field wherever the gelding travelled comfortably without placing undue pressure on it. He said that, even allowing for the rearward position MAC’S SEATTLE adopted, it was his opinion that when placed under extreme pressure by its rider passing the 600M, MAC’S SEATTLE failed to respond and could not improve. Mr Martin was able to display considerable stable financial support for MAC’S SEATTLE and said that the gelding would not run until a similar class event over 1600M at Moree in one month’s time, where if the pace of the race suited, MAC’S SEATTLE may be ridden in a more forward position. His explanation was noted. A post-race veterinary examination of MAC’S SEATTLE failed to reveal any obvious abnormality. A post-race veterinary examination of JADE THIEF, which after racing in a forward position began to hang out from the 600M and weaken, failed to reveal any obvious abnormality.

Near the 1000M BOLD FLUSH, which was hanging in and shifting ground inwards, despite the efforts of its rider, crowded JUNCTION TIME, which had to be checked severely and as a result of this NO TILL, which was following also had to be checked and lost considerable ground. For some distance approaching the home turn, NO TILL was continually held up and unable to improve, then near the 400M had to be steadied and shifted very wide on the track to go forward. When placed under pressure inside the 400M BOLD FLUSH continued to hang in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned R M Quinn, the rider of Wide Awake, which was having its first start, explained that he was instructed to endeavour to be in a handy position. He said that the gelding jumped only fairly and despite his efforts Wide Awake could not go the early speed and after being caught wide when the pace steadied near the 900m, he was obliged to ease off the heels of Finest Jewel. He said shortly thereafter Wide Awake in his opinion lost concentration and he slapped the horse up to keep in touch with the field. He said approaching and rounding the home turn he considered shifting to the outside of Finest Jewel to go forward but when that horse appeared to be taken out by Nefertiti Crown, which was racing to his inside, he was unwilling to be taken wider and therefore sought to improve to the inside of that horse. He said that consequently he steadied for a short distance just after and on straightening he made contact with Finest Jewel when shifting out to obtain a clear run.

As apprentice M Howarth was overweight, permission was granted for apprentice G Scimone to be substituted as the rider of Naturally. Apprentice Howarth was fined $100. For some distance after the 1200m Majestic Design overraced when awkwardly placed inside the heels of Double Shift. When questioned apprentice R Wiggins (Tilbury) explained that he was instructed to endeavour to settle the horse just off the pace. He said in the early stages he allowed Majestic Design to cross him in the hope that that horse would go forward and lead. When this did not eventuate he was positioned further back than intended and consequently commenced to overrace. He added that Tilbury did not run on as hoped in the straight. Trainer Mr S Smith explained that at its most recent start Tilbury led, which was contrary to pre-race plans, and confirmed the advice given to apprentice R Wiggins today. Mr Smith was reminded of his obligations to at least notify the stewards if there is any change in riding tactics and undertook to report on the condition of Tilbury in the days subsequent. A post race veterinary examination of Tilbury did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Stewards considered an objection lodged by N Seymour, the rider of second placegetter No Tracks, against Compaignor (A Abrahams) being declared the winner alleging interference over the last 200m. On the evidence it was established that Compaignor, which was laying out, shifted out slightly causing some inconvenience to No Tracks, however bearing in mind the margin of half a length the stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred that No Tracks would not have finished ahead of Compaignor. In those circumstances the protest was dismissed. A post race veterinary examination of Rainbow Maker which, after being caught wide, went forward at the 600m, did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Balgold was held up for the major part of the straight. Be True Thanks had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight and then near the 100m when placed under pressure shifted in abruptly and was checked off the heel of Rainbow Maker.

He added that Predominator hung out approaching and rounding the home turn and weakened considerably in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of Predominator did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8: Eclectic Golf Constructions Pty Ltd Class 4 Plate 1400m

Approaching the 1000m Storm Force, which was overracing, was steadied to avoid the heels of New York Style (A Marney) which shifted in when not quite clear. As App. R. Stewart was injured permission was granted for App. J. Ford to be substituted as the rider of Bayroof. Prince Cadmus was a late withdrawal at 1.45pm on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the near-fore leg. Mr G. Lee, stable representative for trainer Mr J. Larrikan Sydney jockey Allan Robinson has experienced racing's highs and lows at today's Canterbury meeting in Sydney.

The jockey took the early honours on the program when he rode a winning double, but his day was well and truly soured when he suffered a suspension.

Stewards outed Robinson for careless riding after his handling of Padlock, the second of his two winners for the afternoon.

Officials noted that Robinson had allowed his mount to shift out over the concluding 100 metres of the race and stewards also said he had failed to attempt to straighten his mount in the run to the line.

It is a blow to Robinson who'd made a lightning start to the new racing season. He told reporters outside the stewards room today that from his past five meetings he had ridden four trebles and a double.

His suspension will see him out of the saddle from next Tuesday, after the Muswellbrook meeting in New South Wales, until August 25. He will be free to ride the following day.

Meanwhile, in other news it is believed promising NSW based apprentice Ryan Wiggins will lodge an appeal against a lengthy suspension he received in the ACT late last month.

Wiggins copped a two month penalty after stewards ruled that he had not used enough vigour and given one of his rides every possible chance of winning in Canberra on July 19.

All bets placed on MR CLOUD DANCER were ordered to be refunded and all successful bets were ordered to be paid less 5c win and 6c place in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. Consideration was given to an objection lodged by G Ryan rider of the second placed MISTER DUMPTY against SIR DAVID (D Frahm) being declared the winner alleging interference near the 500m. It was established that near the 500m MISTER DUMPTY was steadied when crowded between SIR DAVID which shifted in marginally and JUST LIKE FLASH which shifted out. As the stewards were of the view that the interference suffered by MISTER DUMPTY was not fully attributable to SIR DAVID and bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish and the way the horses raced to the finish in the straight the objection was dismissed. FLASH DREAMS was very slowly away. Shortly after the start UMASTELLAR was crowded by MUHAYAA’S FLIGHT which shifted in whilst hanging. Near the 800m I AM A FERAL improved onto the heels of ODE TO BILL and was checked. SIR DAVID over raced in the middle stages. DANCE KID had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight. Near the 200m SIRVINO was eased when crowded by STAR VATION (App G McKeon) which shifted out when not quite clear.
