NORTHERN CROSS was slow to begin. HARRY'S GOLD began very awkwardly and lost ground. After the 900m MISS ZEUS hung out and became awkwardly placed on the heels of OUR BILLIE JO. When questioned on his riding of HARRY'S GOLD in the early part of the straight G Colless said he had followed TARA CARABEEN into the straight and anticipated securing a run between that horse and OUR BILLIE JO but he had been forced to steady his mount and attempt to shift out when they did not go forward as he expected. He said he was then held up behind BOTANIC GARDEN and to the inside of MISS ZEUS and had also been disappointed when attempting to take a narrow run between those runners. Colless said he was then obliged to shift out rather abruptly when MISS ZEUS went forward and that, when in clear running, HARRY'S GOLD got to the line well. When questioned on the improved performance of INDIAN QUIVER Trainer Mr T Lawes said that the gelding had not been beaten far at its latest start, prior to which he had not been able to work the horse as he would have liked due to a restricted training track schedule. He said as a consequence INDIAN QUIVER had derived benefit from that run. He also pointed out that in its previous preparation the gelding had won when coming back in distance similar to today. Mr Lawes indicated stable support similar to each of the horses' other starts. Swab samples were taken.

RACE 1: Argyle Street Hotel Night Club Handicap 1200m:

Shag's Sister and Highest bumped on jumping. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the winner, Gleam, D. McLellan stated that the instructions were to ride the filly off pace, however, after beginning well the filly, which was wearing blinkers today for the first time, commenced to overrace and rather than push forward and be racing outside the leader, he elected to restrain Gleam near the 1000m to find cover and as a result raced further back than anticipated. Trainer Mr J. Denham confirmed the instructions and was advised that should there be any change of tactics he would be expected to notify the Stewards. When questioned regarding the performance of Stratica, which was resuming today, B. Cooper stated that the filly travelled well in the run, however, with the 58kg weakened when placed under pressure at the entrance to the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Stratica did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 2: Thomas Hotels Handicap 1200m

Russell On, Strictly Smart and Emerging Star overraced in the early stages. Passing the 1100m Sportsman shifted out slightly and bumped Emerging Star. Russell On overraced and hung out rounding the turn near the 900m, which resulted in Raid And Rule being taken wider. At the entrance to the straight when attempting to shift out to the outside of Sportsman, Strictly Smart bumped the hindquarter of Emerging Star resulting in that gelding becoming unbalanced. Sportsman lay in over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Emerging Star J. Cassidy said that although the gelding was obliged to race three wide in the early stages he felt Emerging Star travelled reasonably well in the run, however, was disappointing in its failure to run on when placed under pressure in the straight. Post-race veterinary examinations of Emerging Star and Mission Statement did not reveal any abnormalities. Mrs G. Waterhouse stated that she was disappointed with the gelding's performance and undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Emerging Star in the days subsequent.

Coablo overraced in the middle stages and passing the 800m had to be checked off the heels of Size Her Up. Near the 300m En Bateau shifted out and bumped Isla Kristina resulting in that mare becoming unbalanced. At the same stage Expresso Rose laid in under pressure. When questioned regarding his riding of Go Ziggy around the home turn and in the early part of the straight, in particular as to why he did not improve to the outside of Sharood near the 500m, App. M. Cant, in the presence of trainer Mr A. Denham, agreed that he had erred in not improving to the outside of Sharood around the home turn and waiting until the entrance to the straight. App. Cant was advised that he would be expected to position his mounts to their best advantage. After the running of this race the track was upgraded to good at 1.29pm

RACE 4: Argyle Street Hotel Superfecta 1800m

App. R. Brewer (Arcadian Prince) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 1600m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Yorkshire Lass resulting in that mare being crowded in on to Hello Pamela, which was checked. Yorkshire Lass was held up until near the 300m. Near the 300m The Stab was steadied when crowded between Yorkshire Lass, which shifted out slightly, and Shantey (D. McLellan), which, under riding, shifted in away from Cuchulainn's Leap, which laid in down the straight. D. McLellan was reprimanded and advised that he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. At the 100m Cuchulainn's Leap, which continued to lay in, crowded Shantey in on to Yorkshire Lass and Arcadian Prince, resulting in Arcadian Prince having to be steadied from the heels of Binnia Best. A post-race veterinary examination of Interbank did not reveal any abnormality. Trainer Mr P. Sutherland stated that in his opinion the mare was coming to the end of her preparation, however, he undertook to report on the progress of Interbank in the days subsequent.

A post-race veterinary examination of Dow Jones did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr P. Sutherland advised that consideration would now be given to spelling Dow Jones. The Stewards inquired into a report from Ms L. El-Hage of her observation following this race that The Net had the presence of blood in both nostrils. After interviewing Ms El-Hage, trainer Mr P. Perry and stable foreman Mr K. Forbes, the inquiry was adjourned to Monday 5 August at Royal Randwick Racecourse so that evidence could be taken from registered stablehand Mr Noel Conn. Racing To Win Sounds Cox Plate Warning

John O'Shea's grey dynamo Racing To Win sent shivers thundering through stakeholder's of fellow WS Cox Plate aspirants when recording an explosive victory in the $200,000 G2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens today.

Competing against top quality gallopers that included G1 winner's Paratroopers, Regal Cheer and Undue, Racing To Win vindicated the support of punters on track who installed the four-year-old as a raging $2.30 favourite ahead of Paratroopers ($3.40) by scoring a contemptuous win which was well within his keeping as far out as the 300m mark.

The official winning margin was 1 ½ lengths with New Edge running home well for second ahead of Regal Cheer which fought on strongly for third whilst the highly fancied Paratroopers was "disappointing" according to regular jockey Darren Beadman.

However, a post-race veterinary inspection of Paratroopers revealed a cut to his off-hind leg which may explain his below-par effort.

As the field swung for home champion jockey Glen Boss had last year's Doncaster hero idling and he simply sat quietly and allowed Racing To Win to cruise to leaders Paratroopers and Regal Cheer at the 300m before accelerating and lengthening powerfully to leave all those who witnessed the display in awe.

The stunning performance reminded everyone of the flawless credentials of arguably Sydney's premier Cox Plate contender.

"I thought it was an awesome win," commented a normally nonchalant trainer John O'Shea who admitted his emotions had got the better of him.

"I usually don't get excited like this," he revealed.

"I thought the Warwick Stakes form was very strong and he ran enormous that day as he ran past a fair horse in Eremein."

"He just did it so easy with the 58 ½ [kilograms]."

"I am very happy with him at this stage of his Cox Plate preparation."

Glen Boss was also buzzing with the performance and summed it up with one superlative - "sensational!"

"I'd like to know what his furlong from the 400-200m was....he must have broke 10 [seconds]," exclaimed an excited Boss who incidentally received a $1,000 fine from stewards' after standing in the irons fifty metres from the winning post.

"I actually thought I got there too soon that's how easy he won," he continued.

"To my surprise he just cantered up to them."

"He's just an awesome horse and he's got so much ahead of him."

Racing To Win is by Coolmore Australia's highest priced stallion Encosta de Lago from Surrealist, a daughter of Kenny's Best Pal which fell to the bid of Coolmore's Tom Magnier at this year's Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for a record $1.6 million.

From 11 lifetime starts Racing To Win has now won on 7 of those occasions and has amassed an amazing $2,176,585 in stakes.

O'Shea will start Racing To Win next in the $400,000 G1 George Main Stakes at Randwick on October 30 with the $600,000 G1 Epsom Handicap on October 7 likely to follow before venturing to Melbourne in readiness for his Cox Plate tilt.

Leading bookmaker Michael Eskander immediately wound Racing To Win's Cox Plate price in from $11 - $7 after today's win.

The weight-for-age championship of Australasia at Moonee Valley on October 28 is shaping as a vintage year with the outstanding son of Encosta de Lago being joined by spring heavyweights Eremein, El Segundo, Haradasun, Lad Of The Manor, Primus and Pompeii Ruler.

Rubric Adds Another Dimension to 3YO Spring Features

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/new-south-wales/21801--sp-1082379493.html layout=standard image=http://www.virtualformguide.com/photos/horses/rubric.jpg desc=Stakes-bound three-year-old Rubric showed he has the scope to prove highly competitive in whatever race he contests during the spring... size=small}

Stakes-bound three-year-old Rubric showed he has the scope to prove highly competitive in whatever race he contests during the spring carnival after scoring a convincing win in the Centigne 3YO C3 Handicap (1000m) at Warwick Farm on Tuesday.

The superbly bred colt performed creditably at stakes level last campaign before being sent to the spelling paddock by his trainer Clarry Conners after attempting to jump the inside running rail in the G1 Sires' Produce Stakes which was eventually won by the up-and-coming Excites.

Rubric had first stamped his class on debut when running fourth to Casino Prince, Empire's Choice and My Middi in the G3 Skyline Stakes on March 18 and then backed it up two weeks later with an excellent effort in the G2 Pago Pago Stakes when finishing third behind Tarleton and Empire's Choice, yet again.

Closely related to colossal Melbourne Cup winning mare Empire Rose, the equally statuesque Empire's Choice has franked that form so far this spring and has been a firmer in Caulfield Guineas markets - a sound endorsement for the spring prospects of Rubric.

On Tuesday, Rubric began smartly to assume a position outside the leader Master Mood and soon after straightening was given his head by jockey Hugh Bowman and sprinted sharply to record a promising 2 lengths margin over Align filly Linear with Master Mood fighting on gamely for third.

"He's a lovely horse," commented a sombre Clarry Conners, obviously still coming to terms with the tragic death on Tuesday morning of his Golden Slipper heroine Belle Du Jour.

"I've always had a big opinion of him so it's nice to see him win today."

"I think he has a real big future."

Bowman, who has been in terrific form of late, echoed the sentiments of Conners and predicted the youngster had a bright future.

"He just had too much of a class edge on them today," said Bowman.

"He'll go on to bigger and better things, that's for sure."

Bred by NSW's Twin Palms Stud, Rubric certainly has the pedigree to make an impact at stakes level as his father is none other than Redoute's Choice, the hottest sire in Australia, whilst his mother is the 1996 William Crockett and McNeil Stakes' winning mare Valourina.

By Snippets from Bravery, winner of the 1988 Queensland Derby and Queensland Oaks, Valourina, a half-sister to multiple group winning grey Brave Prince, has also produced group winners Media and Timbourina rendering Rubric a half-brother to those fillies.

She is also the mother of an unnamed yearling colt by Darley's Elusive Quality, the sire of Smarty Jones.
