She said when the pace slowed near the 1000m she was unable to hold Noble Bid back in the field and the mare consequently pulled its way to the lead. Apprentice Freeman attributed these reasons for Noble Bid’s poor performance. A post race veterinary examination of Noble Bid did not reveal any abnormalities.

Mister Daylight lost both front shoes in running.

RACE 3 – Wormald Gosford Maiden Plate 900m

Brief Reply, which became fractious and reared over backwards while parading in the enclosure, was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 1.42pm. She said near the 100m she shifted to the outside of Our Survivor to obtain clear running between that gelding and Knockdown Power. She said from thereon with clear running Tardio found the line strongly. Apprentice R Freeman agreed with the stewards that she had erred in not coming to the outside of Our Survivor earlier than she did to obtain clear running. Apprentice Freeman was reprimanded and advised that she would be expected to place her mount in a position where they have the best possible chance.

Jockey D Spriggs (Intrepid Boy) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that near the 400m he permitted his mount to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of Tardio resulting in that gelding being checked and losing its rightful running. D Spriggs’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 28 August 2002 and to expire on Wednesday 4 September 2002 on which day he may ride.

When questioned into the reason TOTOPOLY (APP D GAY) raced back in the field as opposed to her usual racing pattern, APP GAY said he was crowded shortly after the start and elected to ease back due to the big weight. He added TOTOPOLY never travelled well on the heavy track and was held up to the inside of SKY SURFER rounding the hometurn. Further in the straight when the gelding started to make ground, he had to check TOTOPOLY near the 100 metres, when he was crowded by ANOTHER SOUTHERN (APP M SPRIGGS), which shifted in. Trainer C CHAPMAN, representing J SHELTON, stated GAY was instructed to go forward and was surprised to see the gelding back in the field. r6lonhro3.jpg (11243 bytes)Octagonal's brilliant son Lonhro gets a chance to extend his winning streak to nine when he runs in tomorrow afternoon's Group Two $151,400 San-Miguel Warwick Stakes (1400m) in Sydney.

The John Hawkes trained four-year-old is set to start a short priced favourite in the race and connections will be hoping what happened in the race fifteen years ago won't be repeated tomorrow.

Campaign King started an unbackable 1/3 favourite in the Warwick Stakes some 15 years ago only to be blowsed by the 500/1 pop Pablo's Pulse.

Lonhro, last season's runaway Three-Year-Old of the Year champion, is being aimed toward the Carlton Draught Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Melbourne.

r6lonhro2.jpg (12423 bytes)Hawkes has said that he is choosing Lonhro's races one by one on his path to the weight-for-age championship in October.

Five of Lonhro's seven rivals tomorrow are going into the Warwick Stakes first up. They include last season's Group One winners Carnegie Express, Defier, Mr. Bureaucrat and Republic Lass.

Darren Beadman has declared he will be fit to ride the budding champion tomorrow despite an injury scare at the mid week meeting in Sydney.

The Guy Walter trained Defier looks as if he is going to be the horse to beat in the Warwick. He hasn't started since downing Freemason in the Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

A five-year-old gelding by Dehere, Defier has been given two easy trials in Sydney in preparation for tomorrow. Chris Munce will take the ride.

PICS - Quentin Lang.

Supplementary Report:

Royal Randwick Wednesday 21 August: Race 8 Potts Point Handicap 1400m:

The Stewards today questioned C. Munce, rider of the winner, Cognac Trader, as to why he allowed Forbill to improve around him passing the 600m, which resulted in Cognac Trader being pocketed until approaching the 200m. C. Munce stated that at that point he was racing four back in the one-off position and had he improved to the outside of Enemy Fire he believed he would have been taken unnecessarily wide. Moreover, C. Munce added he was of the view that Forbill would not be able to maintain its run and he elected to continue racing behind the eventual 2nd placegetter Enemy Fire, which was travelling particularly well and which he considered to be his main danger. Whilst the Stewards noted C. Munce's explanation, he was advised that his failure to take an opportunity to improve at a vital stage of the race had been of concern.

RACE 1: Workout World Wollongong Handicap 2200m

Hello Pamela jumped awkwardly.

D. McLellan (Cybernetic) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in rounding the first turn resulting in Silent Impact being taken in onto Outlaws, which had to be eased.

Approaching the 200m Spillway ducked out badly when struck with the whip.

A post-race veterinary examination of Spillway did not reveal any abnormality.

When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of Hello Pamela, B. Cooper stated that in her opinion the mare had not backed up from its win at Rosehill on 17 August as it was inclined to hang out in the early stages and then when placed under pressure in the straight was inclined to hang in.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Hello Pamela, which weakened in the straight, was displaying a poor recovery rate. Mr T. Bellew, representing trainer Mr P. Sutherland, reported that Mr Sutherland was of the view that Hello Pamela may not have appreciated being backed up within seven days and may not have run out the additional 300m of today's event. Mr Bellew undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Hello Pamela in the days subsequent.

When questioned concerning the performance of Outlaws, C. Brown stated that after getting a bump early his mount never appeared to stretch out fully on the firm surface.

Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, stated that Outlaws today was jumping up in distance and was up significantly in weight, and in his opinion was not suited by the race tempo. Mr Snowden undertook to report if there was anything amiss with Outlaws following the race.

RACE 2: Workout World Parramatta Handicap 1300m

Plea was a late withdrawal at 9.47am on veterinary advice that the gelding was unfit to start.

At the 1200m Floria shifted in tightening Britt's Best (D. Beadman) in onto Prince Vettori.

Shortly afterwards Floria relieved the pressure and then Britt's Best shifted in, which resulted in Prince Vettori being hampered and taken in onto Periphery. Danny Dancer, which was racing tight to the inside of Periphery, then ran in away from Periphery causing Brief Moment to be checked when racing between Barawin, which had improved to the inside, and Danny Dancer, which shifted in. D. Beadman (Britt's Best) was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he must ensure runners to his inside have sufficient room.

On the home turn Danny Dancer was awkwardly placed inside the heels of Suit Yourself.

History Maker (L. Beasley) hung out rounding the home turn and when L. Beasley struck it with the whip in the right hand the mare ran out badly. L. Beasley stated that when he was able to pull the whip through, History Maker straightened up and responded to his riding.

Passing the 1000m Chatelaine (J. Cassidy) shifted in taking Chocolate Starfish across the heels of Guroob. J. Cassidy was advised to exercise more care.

RACE 4: Up And Coming Stakes 1200m

When questioned as to why he got back so far in the early stages, D. Beadman, rider of Thorn Park, stated that he was under instructions to ride the colt similarly to when it was ridden back at its only two race starts and that from the wide barrier, although Thorn Park began well, he was reluctant to press forward as he believed he would be trapped three wide without cover outside Half Hennessy in a fast-run race. When questioned as to why he did not make more endeavour to improve around Half Hennessy from the 600m, he added that Thorn Park was off the bit at that point of the race and when Half Hennessy shifted out three wide near the 500m but then did not continue with its run he found himself momentarily inside the line of that runner's heels. Aware that the leaders had established a break, D. Beadman stated that he then switched Thorn Park four wide across the heels of Half Hennessy, which resulted however in Thorn Park making the home turn awkwardly.  D. Beadman was advised that in the circumstances whereby he was so far out of his ground the Stewards were of the belief that the best interests of Thorn Park winning the race would have been served by him making more effort to improve earlier to the outside of Half Hennessy prior to the entrance to the straight.

RACE 5: San Miguel Warwick Stakes 1400m

Black Ale was a late withdrawal at 2.45pm on veterinary advice when the gelding sweated profusely and became unduly distressed prior to the start. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Black Ale be refunded and that there be no other alteration to betting.

RACE 6: Workout World Miranda Show County Quality 1200m

Swiss Echo did not obtain clear running at any stage in the straight. Mowerman was struck across the head by the whip of J. Morris (National Saint) approaching the winning post.

RACE 7: Toy Show Quality Handicap 1400m

Vita, which was fractious in the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Plain Crazy dipped on jumping. At the 900m Faiza was again hampered when One Under shifted out when pulling hard on the heels of Vita. In the early part of the straight Faiza, which was held up for a run, was awkwardly placed to the inside of the heels of Veloce, which was inclined to lay in.

Plain Crazy, which was held up, was buffeted between Honey Ryder and Vita when attempting to improve passing the 200m.

For some distance passing the 150m Faiza again was held up on the heels of Sophistocat and near the 100m Faiza was struck over the head by the whip of B. Cooper (Sophistocat).

Agile did not obtain clear running until near the 100m.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Sophistocat had blood present in the off-side nostril from a laceration.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Miss Zoe, which raced disappointingly, had been galloped on the near-hind leg and was suffering cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr L. Bridge was advised that he must furnish the results of a full veterinary check, including the results of an ECG, and Miss Zoe must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.

RACE 8: Workout World Chatswood Handicap 1600m

As B. Courtney was indisposed P. Ferris was substituted as the rider of Spectacular Guy.

Time Off was a late withdrawal at 4.39pm on veterinary advice after the gelding sprung a plate in the enclosure, which resulted in sustaining a puncture wound to the off-fore hoof. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Time Off be refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: traditional win and place: 2¢ win, 2¢ place, 4¢ quinella, 2¢ multiple doubles.

Interbank was held up for a run in the early part of the straight and at the 200m had to be checked off the heels of Daniel's The Man when disappointed for a run between Ra Eclipse and Daniel's The Man. Both Interbank and Thorns, which was following, did not obtain clear running until passing the 200m.

In the early part of the straight Dudley Do Right became unbalanced when endeavouring to take a narrow run inside Night Raider.

RACE 1 – the Moneywise Financial Solutions Class 4 Handicap 2100m

Mandalay Bay was slow to begin.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Campaignor, jockey A Abrahams stated that his mount pulled hard in the early and middle stages and consequently failed to run out the 2100 metres. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Trainer P McLeod agreed with jockey Abrahams’ explanation and undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Campaignor in the days subsequent.

RACE 2 – Moneywise Clients Maiden Handicap (Div 2) 1100m

As C Brown was overweight D McLellan was substituted as the rider of Life’s Rosie. C Brown was fined $100 under AR 120(b).

Stewards considered an objection lodged by R Thompson, the rider of second placegetter Cymbala, against Danseur Celebre (S Pollard) being declared the winner alleging interference in the straight. After considering all the evidence stewards established that on two occasions inside the final 200 metres Danseur Celebre shifted out resulting in Cymbala being taken out from its rightful running. Stewards were of the opinion that had the interference not occurred Cymbala would have finished ahead of Danseur Celebre and consequently upheld the objection and amended the placings to No.5 Cymbala first, No.2 Danseur Celebre second and No.3 Malindi Magic third.

At a subsequent inquiry S Pollard was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to prevent his mount from shifting out than he did on this occasion.

Stylish Dane was slow to begin.

RACE 3 – Moneywise Ladies Maiden Handicap (Div 1) 1100m

Black Hawk hung out rounding the home turn.

D McLellan (Pick A Card) stated that whilst in the barriers the mare became fractious and as a result he sustained an injury to his right knee. D McLellan was stood down from riding for the remainder of the day.

When questioned regarding his riding out of Dark Dane in the straight, jockey A Abrahams stated that after being slow to begin his mount failed to show any early pace despite his efforts. He said rounding the home turn he placed Dark Dane under heavy pressure where it commenced to make some ground, however he did not continue to ride with the whip in the straight as he felt as though the gelding was doing its best under hands and heels riding. A Abrahams was advised to ensure that he makes every effort to ride his mounts out so as not to leave room for query.

Stewards opened an inquiry into B Cooper’s riding of Inter Power in the straight. After taking evidence from B Cooper and stable foreman Mr T Bellew stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

RACE 4 – Fund Managers Class 2 Handicap (Div 2) 1100m

Shortly after the start Harka Creek shifted out and inconvenienced Pinetti.

Newbold Countess overraced in the middle stages and near the 600m was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of Kissada.

When questioned as to why he did not improve around the heels of Black Hawk on the home turn S Pollard (Northern Rocket) stated that he felt Black Hawk would take him into the race and for that reason he elected to remain following that horse, however just prior to straightening Black Hawk lost some ground at that point and as a result he was obliged to steady his mount and consequently was caught up on the inside of the heels of that runner.

RACE 5 – David Loadsman Class 2 Handicap (Div 1) 1100m

Shortly after the start Denim Express shifted in away from Medowie Gold resulting in it striking the running rail and becoming unbalanced.

Near the 500m Delightful Success was checked when crowded between Santreno Lass, which commenced to give ground quickly and shifted out slightly, and Jesters Lad (A Huke) which, after initially being taken out by Delightful Success, shifted back in. A Huke was advised to exercise more care.

Approaching the 300m Delightful Success was again hampered when crowded for room by Radiance Of Apollo which shifted out and away from Santreno Lass which shifted out slightly while continuing to give ground.

A post race veterinary examination of Santreno Lass found the mare to be sore in front. Trainer P McLeod was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required before Santreno Lass is permitted to start again.

RACE 6 – Peter Benson Restricted Maiden Handicap 1200m

Just Play overraced in the early and middle stages.

RACE 7 – Financial Planners Class 1 Handicap 1600m

Near the 600m Rebel Pass was checked away from the heels of Precious Lass which commenced to give ground.

Passing the 100m Danemountain Miss was steadied to avoid the heels of Oz.

RACE 8 – Moneywise Transitional Handicap 1600m

Superfine, which had been standing awkwardly, brushed the side of the gates on jumping resulting in its rider S Pollard becoming unbalanced.

Approaching the 100m The Moonster was checked when disappointed for a run to the inside of Tara Express.

Apprentice G Scimone was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the poor performance of Conjuror and a post race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 9 – Benson Hoey Class 4 Handicap 1200m

Arathea, Pimpala Warrior, Dashing Danzero and Earth Legend were checked on jumping when crowded between Jetonova and Gymnasium which was hampered by Sea Time which jumped awkwardly and shifted out.

0725simonmarshall.jpg (12754 bytes)Simon Marshall's comeback to the saddle was given another boost in Sydney today when he scored with a lucky pick up ride.

Marshall booted home Prime Century to win the Alexandria Handicap (1000m) at Randwick after Darren Beadman was indisposed after an incident with a saddle shifting in the previous event.

Trained by Graeme Rogerson, Prime Century made the race a one act affair drawing clear to win comprehensively over Dial Tones and Splish who filled the minor placings.

Today's win was the second Sydney winner for Marshall, after he rode a winner last Wednesday.

Marshall will be looking forward to this weekend when he partners the boom Pat Duff trained youngster Star of Florida in the Group Two Up and Coming Stakes.

The talented rider has likened the youngster to a former champion he rode before initially retiring.

"He is a lot like Hareeba," Marshall said. "Star of Florida has a high cruising speed much like Hareeba did."

RACE ONE –CLASS FOUR HANDICAP 1200 METRES

Stewards inquired into the start afforded to NOBLE JAASI. It was established that just before the start was effected NOBLE JAASI put its head down and to the side, and as the gates opened it straightened but left the gates very awkwardly and lost considerable ground. It was the opinion of the Stewards that as NOBLE JAASI had been affected by nothing other than its own behaviour it had not been denied a fair start and it was deemed to be a starter. Trainer Miss K Trembath was told that should NOBLE JAASI behave similarly in future action may be taken against it. MASTER TOMMY was also slow to begin.

RACE TWO –FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE 1000 METRES

Whilst parading in the enclosure ZARBOUR LASS was kicked by another runner and after arriving at the start was found to be sore in the right shoulder. It was withdrawn by order of the Stewards on veterinary advice at 1.31 pm. Subsequently Stewards ordered all bets on ZARBOUR LASS be refunded and that successful bets made prior to the withdrawal be paid subject to deductions of 27c win and 19c place in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. IN VERSE, FOLLOW THAT DREAM and CLASSIC CAT were all slow to begin. When questioned on OUR BILLIE JO racing forward today Trainer Mr E Sandford said that at its previous start it had been intended to ride the mare in or near the lead but it had been a little slowly away and had not shown the expected speed. After the race the veterinary surgeon reported that CHERRY JUBILEE had sustained lacerations to the left hind leg.

Near the 800m METRO MAX stumbled when it clipped the heels of YUKON MINER after being checked when crowded between that horse and NASRULLA PRINCE which was racing ungenerously, got its head up and shifted in away from THEATRICS. In the circumstances no action was taken. ORCHID BOY hung out noticeably throughout the race, particularly in the straight, proving very difficult to ride. Trainer Mr K Lantry was told that ORCHID BOY will have to perform satisfactorily in an official trial before it will be permitted to start again.

NSW TRB Stewards yesterday continued an inquiry opened on 6th August into the training of horses in the complex at 31 Oak Street, Rosehill, when further evidence was taken from licensed trainer Mr N. Cox and stablehand Mr S. Nicoletti.

Mr Cox pleaded guilty to three (3) charges under AR 175(gg) of having made false statements in connection with the control of racing when interviewed by Stipendiary Stewards, Mr P. Hartmann and Mr C. George at the Oak Street stables on 1 August concerning the training of horses in the Oak Street stables.

Mr Cox's trainers licence was disqualified for a period of six months on each charge with the three penalties to be served concurrently.

Consequently, Mr Cox will be eligible to apply for a trainers licence on 20 February, 2003.

Mr S. Nicoletti pleaded guilty to a charge under LR82(3) of having ridden trackwork at Rosehill Gardens on 1 August, 2002 whilst unregistered.

Mr Nicoletti was fined $300. In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account that Mr Nicoletti had been penalised previously for this offence.

Mr Nicoletti was advised that under AR191 he must receive the permission of the Board for horses stabled at 31 Oak Street, in which he has an owning interest, to be transferred to the control of a licensed trainer.
