Carnegie Express Sensationally Stripped from Waterhouse

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/new-south-wales/32650--sp-711658717.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/new_south_wales.gif desc=Brilliant Group One winner Carnegie Express has been stripped from the Gai Waterhouse stable after his first up run in... size=small}
Brilliant Group One winner Carnegie Express has been stripped from the Gai Waterhouse stable after his first up run in last Saturday's Warwick Stakes in Sydney.

It is understood the owners of the Rosehill and Canterbury Guineas winner disagreed with Waterhouse engaging Jim Cassidy on the galloper last weekend.

Former South African trainer David Payne received a call from one of the horse's owners this morning asking if he would like to train him.

"I was on my way up to Emirates Stud at Murrurundi when one of the owners called me," Payne told Cyberhorse late today. "In fact I haven't even seen the horse yet."

Payne said he was excited to have been entrusted with such a talented performer and was looking forward to the future with him.

"It's obviously very exciting, I'm disappointed naturally enough for Gai," he added. "I'm not sure what happened, but in racing you win some and you lose some."

Carnegie Express is expected to have his next start in the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes on September 7. It is expected that Victory Vein's regular rider Danny Beasley will be in the saddle at the son of Carnegie's next start.

Meanwhile, Payne added that his other stable star, the talented mare Hoeberg had pulled up in fine fettle since her run, also behind Defier and Lonhro in the Warwick Stakes, on Saturday.

"She's pulled up fine," Payne said. "She doesn't like to race up too handy, but there was no pace in the race on Saturday."

Payne plans to aim the mare at the Epsom Handicap before a possible Group One tilt against the best in Melbourne.

"We'd look to running her in the Cox Plate," he said. "But that will depend on how she goes in the Epsom to see whether she will be able to match it with the best."

One of Sydney’s well backed favourites this afternoon has been banned for three months after suffering a bi-lateral bleeding attack.

The Gai Waterhouse trained El Snip was heavily backed in markets for today’s Corporate Express Handicap (1800m) on Randwick’s Kensington track but dropped out of the action just before the home turn.

Jockey Chris Munce was able to ease the gelding down and he finished off tailed off behind the eventual winner Midnight Carols.

A four-year-old gelding El Snip, as his name suggests is by the ill-fated Snippets and out of the Cerreto mare El Rello. Before today he had started on five occasions for two wins and a placing and stakes earnings of $11,800.

RACE 1: QUEEN ADELAIDE CLASS 1 HCP 1000M

BELLE RINGER overraced between the 600m and 400m and was placed awkwardly on the heels of FACING THE WIND and was checked nearing the 400m. On returning to the enclosure the off-hind shoe of FACING THE WIND had been dislodged. A post-race veterinary examination was performed on CAT LADY after the filly appeared to be short in her action on pulling up but no abnormalities could be found.

1ST: CAT LADY; 2ND: FACING THE WIND; 3RD: TIVOLI TIME

RACE 2: SEPPELT FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE 1200M

FIERY FLAME jumped outwards at the start and took AUSSIE SHEILA and ROSIE AGAIN wider on the track. LIGHTFOOT SALLY was slow to begin, lost considerable ground and then from the 600m was under pressure and lost considerable ground and finished a distant last. A post-race veterinary examination of LIGHTFOOT SALLY revealed that the filly was suffering from moderate respiratory distress. Trainer J Fahey was informed due to LIGHTFOOT SALLY’s performance today she would have to trial to the steward’s satisfaction until such time as she becomes more competitive and also the stewards would require a veterinary certificate of soundness before she starts again. ROSIE AGAIN was steadied approaching the 700m, got her head up and became unbalanced.

1ST: CASUAL DAWN (NZ); 2ND: ROSIE AGAIN; 3RD: DUSTELLA

RACE 3: LINDEMANS ENTIRES & GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE 1200M

1ST: A TREY; 2ND: INTEGRANGEL; 3RD: BELLMISTER

RACE 4: SEAVIEW BUBBLES UP 2002 CLASS 1 HCP 1400M

FLAG overraced during the early stages and was then caught wide throughout. Stewards questioned at length rider M Webber and trainer D Schmidt over the performance of CHANNON SPIRIT. Jockey Webber advised that seeing the mare had been unsuccessful over the distance at her prior starts, he was of the opinion today that he allowed the mare to stride early and lead like she had done at the previous start in Taree on 18th August, however he stated that shortly after attempting to ease the mare, she began to overrace and refused to settle. He was still hesitant to let her stride having the distance in his mind, also the slow condition of the track. However he stated on straightening, when CHANNON SPIRIT was asked for an effort, she only ran on fairly and was disappointing over the concluding stages. He did say, however, in hindsight, he should have elected to allow CHANNON SPIRIT to stride as the overracing during the early stages may have affected her ability to get the 1400m. He also stated that he believed it was a poor ride on his behalf and he would be more aware in future when placed in similar circumstances. Trainer Schmidt when questioned over the performance of CHANNON SPIRIT stated that he was disappointed with the ride of M Webber and after he observed the mare overracing during the early stages, he thought that Webber would have allowed her to stride as he felt by restraining her early, that may have restricted her ability over the 1400m. Stewards informed jockey Webber that they were not happy with his ride, and did agree with his thoughts in that it was a poor ride on this occasion and informed him that in future his rides will be watched closely. A post-race veterinary examination of CHANNON SPIRIT was conducted and no abnormalities were detected and CHANNON SPIRIT was also sent to the swab stall for a specimen.

1ST: TOP DOWN; 2ND: FLAG; 3RD: CLASSIC FLYER

RACE 5: PENFOLDS TRANSITIONAL HCP 1800M

RODEO BLUES was crowded at the start between OPERA COURT and GOLDEN BOBBIE and became unbalanced. CARMONA KING was held up approaching and rounding the home turn and also momentarily on straightening.

1ST: OPERA COURT; 2ND: CARMONA KING; 3RD: OPERA’S REWARD

RACE 6: WYNNS COONAWARRA ESTATE CLASS 4 HCP 1400M

Jockey A Nicholls was fined the sum of $200 under AR120(b) after he was found to have accepted the ride on COLLAROY when overweight and was subsequently replaced by T Treichel. Apprentice C Karakatsanis was questioned over the performance of ROCKLILY and he stated that the mare lay out from the start and then nearing the 1000m he changed the stick into the left hand and gave her a slap down the shoulder which straightened her up where she became more balanced. He said from the 600m ROCKLILY was placed under pressure but failed to respond and was very disappointing. Stewards also questioned trainer M Quinn over what appeared to be improved performance of COLLAROY and trainer Quinn stated that this had been the gelding’s first start for him and he said the only reason COLLAROY had been sent to his stable was that the owners felt that COLLAROY was not suited to provincial and city racing and felt that by sending the gelding to Port Macquarie he would be more suited to country racing. He said that he had little knowledge of COLLAROY’s previous racing but stated that since arriving COLLAROY had been swum and worked well but was unaware that the gelding would improve as witnessed in today’s performance. The trainer of FAVOURS UNLIMITED Mr R Hayward-Keen advised Stewards that the mare was being retired to stud after today’s poor performance and a post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities with FAVOURS UNLIMITED.

1ST: COLLAROY; 2ND: WILLY NILLY; 3RD: WIN DOT COM

RACE 7: LINDEMANS BIN 65 CHARDONNAY QUALITY HCP 1400M

Jockey D Spriggs was questioned over the performance of CORPORATE and he stated that the gelding was not suited to the wet track conditions and due to the condition of the track and being pressured for the lead throughout had taken its toll on the gelding.

1ST: HER MAN BOB; 2ND: READY NOW; 3RD: DESTINO’S DIAMOND

RACE 8: ROSEMOUNT ESTATE CLASS 2 HCP 1200M

PARASANG was crowded shortly after the start between LADY VAMP and KIRCH BEAUTY and lost considerable ground. CUSTOMS stumbled on being released and became unbalanced. Apprentice Z Purton (LADY VAMP) was beaten for a run on straightening to the outside of BOUNTY NIAGA when SCULPTOR ROAD shifted out. This resulted in LADY VAMP being crowded onto OBSERVING which was laying in which then resulted in LADY VAMP becoming momentarily unbalanced, shifted in and bumped SCULPTOR ROAD across the heels of BOUNTY NIAGA. Also OBSERVING continued to lay in from shortly after straightening and proved difficult to ride out.

r1gaiwaterhouse.jpg (8832 bytes)Gai Waterhouse has put the disappointment of losing one of her stable stars yesterday behind her by preparing a winning treble at Randwick today.

Waterhouse was in the news yesterday when owners of the multiple Group One winner Carnegie Express decided to take that galloper out of her Randwick stables and transfer him to the former South African David Payne.

But today Gai let her horses do the talking and she was a winner three times over.

Early in the afternoon Jesterette and Robyn Freeman showed a clean set of heels in winning the Paspaley Pearls Handicap in good style.

A short time later the million dollar colt Stanford showed plenty of fight to break through at his third start. The colt by Danehill was ridden to victory by Chris Munce.

The treble was completed when Red Trinket made it two wins from as many starts this preparation in the last of seven events.

With Danny Beasley in the saddle Red Trinket gave plenty to hold out the challenges which were issued in the home straight.

A gelding by Lure, Red Trinket downed Kepi Blanc and Love’s Stubby to give Eduardo Cojuangco and Andrew Baddock’s Gooree Pastoral Company Syndicate another winner.

Supplementary Report:
Royal Randwick Wednesday 21 August 2002:

Race 7 Destination Management Companies Handicap 1800m:

The Stewards today continued an inquiry into App. G. Scimone's handling of 4 th placegetter, Spirit Of The Nite when evidence was taken from his master, Mr W. Prain, and Mr T. Griffin, TRB Betting Steward/Form Analyst, and further evidence was taken from App. Scimone. App. Scimone was found guilty of a charge under AR135(b) of having failed to take all reasonable and permissible measures on Spirit Of The Nite, and in particular between the 600m and 500m of having failed to shift to the outside of the heels of Talista Belle, which resulted in Spirit Of The Nite being badly pocketed rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. App. Scimone's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday 5 September 2002 and to expire on Saturday 5 October 2002 on which day he may ride.

Canterbury Park Sunday 25 August 2002:

Race 4 Paraquad "Independence Day" 14th Nov Superfecta 1200m:

Trainer Mrs D. Matangi reported that following the event Daphne's Rose had come into season and connections had reconsidered the option of retiring the mare. Mrs Matangi was advised that Daphne's Rose must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again.

RACE 1: Paspaley Pearls Handicap 1550m

B. Pengelly, rider of Vetorisc, lodged an objection against Jesterette being declared the winner alleging interference in the straight.

After viewing the official film and bearing in mind the margin of three-quarters of a length, Stewards acceded to B. Pengelly's request to withdraw the objection.

When questioned concerning Of Note leading, rider C. Munce and trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse stated that with the slow pace they had anticipated being closer to the lead, but C. Munce stated that Of Note jumped awkwardly and when the filly wanted to race and was trapped wide he allowed Of Note to stride forward.

In the early part of the straight Vetorisc was inclined to lay in behind the heels of Jesterette. All Gold, which was following, was hampered in consequence.

When questioned concerning the performance of Trumps, which weakened badly in the straight, trainer Mr G. Rogerson stated that the filly got very stirred up before the race and in his view did not run out the 1550m journey. He advised that it is now his intention to spell Trumps.

Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to good at 1.18pm.

RACE 2: Queen Elizabeth 2 Plate 1000m

Hover reared as the gates were released and lost considerable ground.

Prior to declaration of correct weight the Stewards interviewed Starter Mr W. Cooper, barrier attendant Mr L. Southwell, rider S. Pollard and trainer Mr S. Englebrecht. Stewards ruled that Hover was afforded a fair start and that the filly must trial to the satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

Abstracted and Trevalsa were slow to begin.

App. C. Morgan (Princess Dragon) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in close to the finish line causing Move It Or Lose It to be steadied.

App. R. Freeman (Snippety Lass) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 300m, when being steadied off the heels of Phar Red, she permitted her mount to shift out, which resulted in Move It Or Lose It being hampered and taken out across the running of Fouad, which clipped the heels of Move It Or Lose It and almost fell. In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account App. Freeman's good record. App. Freeman's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 1 September 2002 and to expire on Thursday 12 September 2002 on which day she may ride.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Princess Dragon had cast its near-fore plate and had quartered that heel.

RACE 3: Blondies Handicap 1100m

The Bushranger was slow to begin.

The Bushranger was held up for a run for some distance passing the 200m.

A. Gibbons advised that when pulling up Cherry Bounce made an abnormal respiratory noise and a subsequent veterinary examination did not detect any obvious abnormalities.

Trainer Ms K. Gavenlock advised that when Taxed returned to her stables the gelding had blood present in its near-side nostril.

RACE 4: De Bortoli Wines Handicap 1550m

As App. R. Brewer was unable to claim any of his allowance, Stewards permitted App. C. Morgan to be substituted as the rider of Paris Win.

App. Brewer was fined $200 (LR70).

Paris Win was slow to begin.

RACE 5: Sterling Estates Handicap 1400m

Shortly after the start O'Me, Wide Awake and St Reims were hampered between Maverick, which was taken out by Oualie, and Enabler, which shifted in. Wild Heart overraced in the early stages. At the 900m and again at the 700m Enabler was checked off the heels of Danewin Chief. When questioned concerning his ride on Wide Awake, D. Beadman stated that after striking interference at the start his mount hung in badly throughout the event. He stated that he endeavoured to follow Wild Heart when that horse commenced to improve at the entrance to the straight, but when Wild Heart sprinted too quickly. He added his intention was to come to the extreme outside, however, with Wide Awake hanging in he then would have had to have shifted some four horses and he therefore elected to try to find a run through the field. When racing between horses he stated that with Wide Awake hanging badly he was reluctant to relax the hold on his mount to switch the whip into his right hand and also was reluctant to allow his mount to shift in further because of, firstly, Honest Ned and then Oualie racing to his inside. He stated that inside the 100m, when he was finally able to pull the whip through, his mount straightened and he immediately shifted out to the outside of Hymnfamous and Stanford and rode his mount to the line. D. Beadman agreed that had his horse been racing tractably he would have shifted to the inside of Hymnfamous, but that his focus had been on not causing interference to other runners and to pull his whip through so that he might straighten his mount and be able to ride it out to the finish. Whilst the Stewards acknowledged the difficulties under which D. Beadman was endeavouring to ride his mount in the straight they nevertheless notified him that he must be alert to opportunities that present themselves at vital stages of the race. Mr P. Snowden, representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, stated that Wide Awake was a green horse having only its second run in a race. He was notified that in future he should alert riders that it may be advisable to carry the whip in their right hand. A post-race veterinary examination of Wide Awake did not reveal any abnormality. S. Pollard (Monte Grande) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 700m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Wild Heart resulting in that runner having to be checked and lose its rightful running. S. Pollard's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 7 September 2002 and to expire on Thursday 19 September 2002 on which day he may ride.

RACE 6: Corporate Express Handicap 1800m

Colosseum was held up until passing the 200m and approaching the winning post was steadied to avoid the heels of Midnight Carols, which shifted out.

El Snip suffered a bleeding attack during running. Mr P. Sexton, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, was advised that the gelding will incur an automatic three-month ban.

RACE 7: Opals 2000 Handicap 1400m

As no apprentice was available, permission was granted for B. Stanley to be substituted as the rider of Prince Cadmus.

Space Dancer pulled hard in the early and middle stages.

J. Cassidy (Ya Ya Effendi) was spoken to concerning the amount of vigour he used on Ya Ya Effendi in the early stages of the straight and reminded of his obligations to ensure that he fully tests his mounts. Trainer Mr J. Lee tendered evidence of substantial betting support for Ya Ya Effendi.

GENERAL:

The Stewards questioned Mr Graham Maxwell, proxy for bookmaker David Dwyer fielding in the outer ring, concerning the presence of a number of parties in the vicinity of his betting stand at today's meeting. Evidence was taken from Mr Alex Kay, Mr Vince McDonald and Mr Greg Wynn, all of whom have made application to be registered as clerks with Mr Dwyer. Evidence was heard that Mr McDonald, Mr Wynn and Mr Kay's association with Mr Dwyer's operation was in relation to Mr Kay seeking further experience in the bookmaking field as he has an application shortly to go before the New South Wales Bookmakers Co-Operative. During the course of the inquiry Mr Wynn sought to withdraw his application for a clerk's licence, which was acceded to, and Mr McDonald and Mr Kay indicated that their association with the bookmaking operations of Mr Dwyer would be short term only. The Stewards advised Mr Maxwell that his explanations had been accepted and that they would speak to Mr Dwyer at the Rosehill Gardens meeting on Saturday 31 August 2002 and they would continue to observe the operations of Mr Dwyer's stand.

Race 1 - Artegra Imaging Handicap (1100m)

The stewards ordered the withdrawal of Paris Flyer at 12.38 p.m. after the gelding refused to enter the barrier. They further ordered that all bets on Paris Flyer be refunded and that there be no alteration to other betting. Trainer Mr R. Craig was advised that Paris Flyer must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards before racing again.

Battle Song was slow to begin.

Leaving the 800m Sonic D'Hedgehog was steadied off the heels of Battle Song, which shifted in whilst over-racing.

Near the 600m Toppear laid in behind Riding Master, resulting in Battle Song having to be steadied off the heels of Toppear.

Abolition, which was following, had to be steadied and shifted out around the heels of Battle Song.

A post-race veterinary examination of Italian Adventure, which weakened after travelling wide throughout, revealed no abnormality.

Battle Song hung out rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.

Approaching the 200m Valiant Lad had to be steadied off the heels of Battle Song (App. R.Brewer), which continued to shift out. App. Brewer was reprimanded and told that in similar circumstances he must stop riding and straighten his mount.

Race 2 - Sine Industries Handicap (1200m)

Squish shifted out at the start and bumped Bollinger. As a result, Belle Mardi was hampered and taken out onto Daka's Handout and Fawayez. Near the 600m Private Steer was crowded and became unbalanced when Fawayez shifted in. Fawayez and Private Steer then bumped for some distance as Pivate Steer improved to the outside of Squish. At the entrance to the straight Pivate Steer was briefly held up on the heels of Squish and was obliged to shift out across heels to obtain clear running. When questioned about the disappointing performance of Interlagos D.Beadman said the filly raced wide in the early stages but travelled well. He said that after shifting to the inside on the home turn to save ground, he put the filly under pressure and it was disappointing in its failure to run on. Stable foreman Mr P.Snowden said that in his opinion Interlagos is looking for more ground. A post-race veterinary examination of Interlagos revealed no abnormality.

Race 3 - Data Global Technologies Handicap (1200m)

Shalang jumped awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, Samar and Acacia Bay bumped.

Near the 500m Birubi Ella had to be checked when crowded between Middlebrook, which shifted out slightly to the outside of the heels of Samar, and Baroness Britney (S.Marshall), which, after being bumped on the hindquarters, was turned in across the running of Birubi Ella. S.Marshall was advised to ensure in similar circumstances that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed that Birubi Ella had sustained a laceration to the near hind fetlock. Trainer Mrs K.Dyble was asked to produce a veterinary clearance for Birubi Ella before the filly races again.

A post-race veterinary examination of Delissa revealed no abnormality.

Race 4 - Paraquad "Independence Day" 14 November Superfecta (1200m)

Daphne's Rose and Red Baroness were slow to begin.

Bally Beckham jumped awkwardly, shifted out and crowded Regal Deva, and then a short distance later shifted back in and hampered Codemus.

When questioned about the disappointing performance of Daphne's Rose, App.J.Ford said the mare never felt comfortable in her action, did not respond to his riding at any stage, and in his opinion was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of Daphne's Rose revealed no abnormality. Trainer Mrs D.Matangi advised the stewards that Daphne's Rose will now be retired.

Race 5 - Gerard Malouf Lawyers Handicap (1200m)

Brecon Rose was slow to begin and lost its near fore plate in running.

Near the 500m En Bateau had to be steadied off the heels of Bridgee Boo, which commenced to weaken.

As Rosa Marada attempted to improve to the outside of Brecon Rose at the entrance to the straight, it was disappointed for a run between that filly and En Bateau.

Near the 200m Rosa Marada was disappointed for a run between Doreen Jewel and En Bateau.

Approaching the 200m Amitaba had to be steadied when crowded between Punton Danehill (D.Beadman), which shifted out under pressure, and Hasty Belle. D.Beadman was reprimanded and told that in similar circumstances he must make more of an effort to keep his mount straight than he did on this occasion.

Near the 50m Amitaba again had to be steadied when crowded between Punton Danehill and Hasty Belle (Miss R.Freeman), which shifted in slightly. Miss Freeman was advised to exercise more care.

Race 6 - Ashfield Catholic & Community Club Handicap (1250m)

Sin City was crowded shortly after the start between Red Audi, which shifted out, and Richmond.

P.Sexton, representing trainer Mrs G.Waterhouse, was told that Canon's Halo, which bled during the event, will incur a mandatory three months' bar (AR.53A).

Race 7 - Stacks The Law Firm Handicap (1900m)

On jumping, Mighty Pedrille was crowded between Sonia Son and Arcadian Prince. Sake got its head up at the start, and then over-raced for some distance in the early stages.

Near the 600m Sonia Son had to be steadied when Mighty Pedrille shifted in.

Thirio laid out under pressure close to the line, obliging rider J.Cassidy to stop riding with the whip.

When questioned about the improved performance of the winner, Thirio, compared with its last start when ninth of twelve at Canterbury Park on 14 August, trainer Mr T. Martin said that in his opinion the gelding over-raced on that occasion and for that reason he removed the blinkers today, and that he attributed that change to Thirio settling better today and consequently being able to finish off the race.

Race 8 - Paraquad Promoting Independence Superfecta (1550m)

Statesmanship jumped awkwardly.

Tray Bit jumped awkwardly and bumped the hindquarters of St. Saens.

St. Saens, which was over-racing, had to be steadied off the heels of Marslanding at the turn at the 1300m. Late Whisper, which was following, had to be steadied in consequence.

The saddle on Tussac Flyer slipped making the first turn, which resulted in rider P.Losh being placed at a disadvantage and having to race more forward.

At the entrance to the straight Lion Rock had to be steadied when Tussac Flyer, which was tiring, shifted out.

When questioned about the poor performance of Raise A King, J.Cassidy could offer no tangible explanation other than that in his opinion the gelding, which was stepping up in distance today, did not travel well at any stage after racing wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination of Raise A King revealed no abnormality.

Mr S.Englebrecht, the trainer of French Raven, which went forward today, explained that from a wide barrier and stepping up in distance, his instructions were to ride the gelding more forward today. Mr Englebrecht was reminded of his obligation to inform the stewards of any change of racing tactics.

r3bedemurray.jpg (8377 bytes)Last season's champion two year old Victory Vein (2001 Sires Produce PI$32,500) returned to racing at Warwick Farm on Saturday with all the style and professionalism we have come to expect.

She paraded beforehand in her usual relaxed fashion, albeit slightly taller and with the air of a filly who knows just what is required.

The AJC Silver Shadow Stakes Gr 2 is the first step in the Princess Series and judging by Victory Vein's performance, she will be the "princess" they all have to beat.

The Bede Murray trained filly settled beautifully, before dashing clear in the straight for Danny Beasley, who later declared her the best horse he has ridden.

"If she has one characteristic, it’s that she does everything in such an effortless fashion," said Beasley.

Victory Vein will progress through the Princess Series, before heading to Melbourne for the 1000 Guineas at Caulfield and possibly a tilt at the VRC Oaks. On face value her pedigree would suggest some doubt about her ability to run 2500 metres.

But as we all know the three year old classics are often won by the best horse, rather than the best stayer. Quality is the deciding factor at set weights and Victory Vein has that fine attribute in spades!

Jockey T Phillips was fined the sum of $100 under AR120 (b) for accepting the ride on GAI SIMONE when found to be overweight. Jockey Phillips was then replaced by M Chapman. PRINCESS CHIMES stood flat footed when released, then jumped awkwardly losing considerable ground. Trainer J McGee could offer little excuse for PRINCESS CHIMES missing the start and subsequently a warning was placed on the barrier manners of PRINCESS CHIMES. Trainer J McGee was also instructed in future to ensure that the surcingle was more secure when the excess portion of the surcingle was not securely fastened and therefore was flapping beneath the mare. HURRICANE STROLLER reared when the field was released and lost some ground. SUMAGINE raced wide throughout. Approaching the 700m OUR ROSAMONDE became momentarily awkward on the heels of HURRICANE STROLLER and shifted outwards. On straightening ALLNIGHTER slipped and became momentarily unbalanced. Stewards questioned jockey T Phillips over the performance of OUR BULLET and he stated that the gelding was totally unsuited to the shifting conditions of the track and was most disappointing on the day. Stewards also questioned jockey T Treichel over the performance of SMOKE AND MIRRORS and he stated that at no stage was the gelding comfortable in the going and had failed to run on over the final stages. He said that he began to make his run at the top of the straight where SMOKE AND MIRRORS was making good ground, but over the final stages SMOKE AND MIRRORS stopped quickly and compounded. A post race veterinary examination of SMOKE AND MIRRORS revealed no abnormalities.
