Near the 200m All About Class was steadied off the heels of Occidental when that horse shifted out under pressure.

RACE 4 – Mistral International Pty Ltd Provincial 4yo & Upward Class 4 Plate 1300m

Due to the slow early pace Seatime and Red Baroness raced ungenerously in the early stages. Near the 400m Exotikos was buffeted between Magnum Lass and Real Dream (A W Robinson) which shifted in. A W Robinson was advised to exercise more care. A short distance later Exotikos had to be steadied and shifted to the outside of Real Dream to obtain clear running.

Oakfield King pulled hard in the middle stages and near the 600m was continually steadied away from the heels of Bogart. Rounding the turn into the straight Oakfield King (P Losh), which was racing keenly, shifted out abruptly inconveniencing Prince Vettori. P Losh was advised to exercise more care when allowing his mounts to shift ground. Near the 200m Rebel Rock, which was tiring, shifted out slightly. Sir Pekan got its head up on several occasions in the early stages. When the place slowed near the 1200m Red Audi got its head up while overracing and had to be continually steadied away from the heels of Strabo until passing the 800m.

RACE 7 – Dora Creek Workers Club Class 2 Handicap 900m

Acting on veterinary advice that Touch The Plate was unfit to start the gelding was a late withdrawal at 4.34pm. Stewards subsequently directed that all monies wagered on Touch The Plate be refunded in full and made no other alteration to betting. Trainer P Ryan will be advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before Touch The Plate is permitted to race again. A post race veterinary examination of Majestic Son did not reveal any abnormalities. Corner Kicker bled from both nostrils and will incur the mandatory three months bar. Stewards inquired into the reasons for jockey T Phillips (A Penny) not riding his mount out over the concluding stages. T Phillips explained that after jumping awkwardly he felt his saddle snap in half with the front section of the saddle flipping back over itself resulting in the tree of the saddle sitting upside down and the points of the saddle breaking free of the tree. He said from that point he was in extreme difficulty with his saddle rolling from side to side through out the event. He said at the top of the straight when A Penny was racing truly he was able to use moderate vigour on the mare, slapping it down the shoulder with the whip. He said over the final 100 metres the mare commenced to tire and shift ground resulting in his saddle rolling significantly more than it had in the early part of the straight. He said as such he stopped riding the mare out over the concluding stages as he believed had he continued his saddle would have shifted dramatically and he was of the opinion this would have resulted in him being dislodged from A Penny. After considering T Phillips’s explanation and inspecting his saddle and their own observations of the film, stewards accepted his explanation.

RACE 8 – Tiffany Appliances Pty Ltd Class 1 Handicap 1300m

Jibena and Sky Can Hurri bumped at the start. Near the 800m Piper Jo was steadied away from the heels of Charnwood Channon, struck the running rail and became unbalanced. Near the 200m Piper Jo was checked. An inquiry into the riding of Piper Jo in the straight was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Paris Win stood flatfooted at the start and lost considerable ground. Trainer B Thomsen was advised that a warning would be placed on Paris Win. Passing the 1300m the saddle shifted forward on Casual Dawn obliging its rider to allow that mare to stride forward to the lead. As Casual Dawn crossed Magilas near the 1200m mark and slowed the pace, Magilas had to be steadied off the heels of Casual Dawn.

RACE 2 – Parkroyal Parramatta Maiden Handicap 1100m

Riviera Playboy jumped awkwardly and lost considerable ground. Approaching the 600m Riviera Playboy which commenced to overrace, improved to the inside of Mooktanus. Mooktanus then shifted in slightly resulting in Riviera Playboy having to be checked and shift in hampering Foloos. When questioned regarding his riding of Riviera Playboy around the home turn, P Losh stated that the gelding in his opinion was not travelling well enough to come to the outside of King Of The Realm around the home turn and was also inclined to race greenly. He stated that when he improved to the inside of King Of The Realm, Vondale, which was racing ahead of him, shifted out slightly resulting in him having to continue into clear running to the inside of Vondale. A short distance later near the 100m Mooktanus shifted out resulting in Riviera Playboy being steadied and not being able to be fully tested to the line. P Losh was advised that in the opinion of the stewards the better option would have been for him to come to the outside of King Of The Realm at the entrance to the straight where there was clear running and that he would be expected to consider all available options in similar circumstances.

RACE 3 – Aubrey Brown Partners Class 1 Handicap 1000m

Stewards inquired into the reasons why T Treichel weighed in almost one kilogram under his allotted weight on return to scale on the winner Simon Rules. Acting under the provisions of AR 143 stewards allowed T Treichel to make the weight with his bridle and subsequently declared correct weight. T Treichel could offer no tangible reason as to why he weighed in light. He gave evidence in the presence of trainer G Yorke, who saddled the gelding today, that he had included all the gear that he had weighed out with, which was confirmed by Clerk of Scales Mr J Saunderson. T Treichel was reminded of his obligations under AR 143 to weigh in at the correct weight. On jumping Our Teacher’s Pet was crowded between Covet Thee and Stylish Kingdom, both of which shifted ground. Echo Chamber was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 4 – Wideline Windows And Doors Class 4 Handicap 1200m

Acting on veterinary advice that Lapwing, which sustained a laceration to its off stifle in the enclosure, was unfit to start, stewards ordered its withdrawal at 2.39pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Lapwing be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 2.39pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: win and traditional each way, 19 cents win and 16 cents place; quinellas 40 cents; multiple doubles 19 cents. Approaching the winning post Colosseum had to be steadied when Monte Mist shifted in. D McLellan’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday 12 September 2002 and to expire on Friday 20 September 2002 on which day he may ride. When questioned regarding the improved performance of Bondi Iceberg today compared to its 13th of 14 runners in the listed Premiers Stakes at Rosehill on 31 August 2002, trainer A Wildeman stated that the gelding was inclined to pull hard in that race and for this reason he removed the blinkers in an endeavour to get the gelding to settle better. He attributed this as the main factor for Bondi Iceberg’s improved showing today.

RACE 8 –Wyong Roos – 2002 Premiers Class 2 Handicap 1350m

Representatives of high profile bookmaker Rob Waterhouse are set to fight on after his nine month suspension was sensationally altered to a disqualification at the "end" of the so-called "extravagant odds" saga in Sydney today.

Judge Barrie Thornley delivered his decision today after a saga which had been going for some months, but immediately after the result was handed down Waterhouse's legal team promised the case was far from over.

Judge Thornley dismissed the appeals from Waterhouse and the NSW TRB today, but in a major shock changed the bookmakers nine month suspension to a dsiqualification.

This will result in Waterhouse being banned from attending the track and will also require him to reapply for another bookmaking licence.

Paul Brereton SC, who is representing Waterhouse, told reporters the case was likely to end up the Supreme Court.

"We are considering our position now, but what I can say is you haven't heard the end of it," Brereton said.

B York (Spy’s Eclipse) explained that the horse in its previous starts had been overracing in a forward position and at its most recent start it was the intention to ride it back in the field. He said today with the anticipated speed in the race he was instructed to settle Spy’s Eclipse back in the field. He said that the horse travelled well in this position but approaching and rounding the home turn was held up, however when able to be placed under pressure in the straight Spy’s Eclipse ran on well. A post race veterinary examination of Viator, which weakened over the concluding stages, revealed the filly to be displaying mild respiratory distress. Mr R Elliott, representing trainer G Rogerson, was advised that before Viator is permitted to race again a veterinary certificate of fitness, including the results of an endoscopic examination, must be produced.

RACE 4 – Lindemans Padthaway Chardonnay Class 4 Handicap 1350m

RACE 5 – Lindemans Salinger Maiden Handicap 1350m

Near the 600m Master Splinter was checked off the heels of Adelong and shifted out. In the straight Jindalee Poppy and Stadium were unable to obtain clear running. He said that Monkey Puzzle travelled fairly in the middle stages however over the last 500 metres the filly weakened noticeably. A post race veterinary examination of Monkey Puzzle did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. C Munce (Prude) explained that he had been instructed to ride the mare where it was comfortable. He said in the early stages when it became apparent that he was going to be unable to match the early pace he elected to allow Prude to settle mid field. NSW Bookmakers Go Corporate

Racing NSW (TRB) will be in a position to licence Bookmaker Companies from 1 October 2002.

The Racing Legislation Amendment (Bookmakers) Act 2002 was recently enacted by the NSW Parliament, and Section 14A has been added to the Thoroughbred Racing Board Act 1996.

The new section permits the forming of a proprietary company for the purpose of applying for a licence as a bookmaker - in this case to be known as a Bookmaker Company.

The Act describes the permitted company structure, and conditions under which the business may operate.

Other conditions of licence and Racing Rules are attached to the Bookmaker Company licence when issued by Racing NSW.

In short, company directors must be first licensed as an individual bookmaker, and shareholders must be close family members of a director.

Once licensed as a Bookmaker Company, directors are restricted to Company operations only, and cannot operate their individual bookmaker's licence during the term of the Company licence.

Mr Keith Bulloch, TRB General Manager Racing Services, explained the opportunities now available to NSW Bookmakers.

"A working party consisting of representatives from the 3 Codes and the NSW Bookmakers Co-operative has worked toward strategies that will compliment the legislation," he said.

"Our Bookmakers will now be able to form partnerships or family companies to strengthen their bookmaking business.

"This may be in the form of a large company offering a range of bet types, or smaller family companies or partnerships who field on the more traditional race course stands.

"For example, 2 or 3 Country bookmakers who find they don't have the same level of turnover that they once enjoyed can join together to expand their opportunities and join their client base.

"They may not necessarily be in the same district, and could field at say Newcastle and Ballina on the same day under the company logo, and share in the results.

"On the other end of the scale, a larger Bookmaker Company can now form to 'take on' some of the interstate corporates.

"They may apply to operate from racetracks, auditoriums or racecourse offices, offering Sports betting and Feature Doubles in addition to regular race bets.

"Whilst the ability to compete with other state corporates will also continue to depend on comparative expenses and like factors, other bodies such as the Cross Border Betting task force is working toward outcomes in this regard.

"The introduction to NSW of bookmaker companies is however one step toward the prolongation of the bookmaker as an Australian tradition."

WEATHER: OVERCAST
TRACK: GOOD

Race 1. CLASS 1 PLATE, 1600 METRES:

The start of this race was delayed due to the late arrival of the ambulance. Near the 500 metres PREFIX struck the rail and became unbalanced when racing in restricted room inside TITLED…. Trainer MR M PETROVIC reported subsequent to the race that TITLED lost it's off fore plate in running.

Race 2. MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1000 METRES:

BLETCH'S AIRE had to be resaddled behind the barriers delaying the start. Trainer MS T KOWE was advised that BLETCH'S AIRE, which was not competitive at any stage would be required to trial to the stewards satisfaction prior to racing again….. COLLWES, BULLS ROAD and FAIRY STORY were slowly away.

Race 3. TRANSITIONAL HANDICAP, 1400 METRES:

A post race veterinary examination of COEUR DE ROUGE revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Race 4. CLASS 4 PLATE, 1600 METRES:

Near the 400 metres SOUTHGATE was steadied when disappointed for a run between DUKE OF ALBA and KING CUTLER…… Stewards considered an objection lodged by App G SCIMONE the rider of OUR BALI HI, placed third, against BREAKAWAY (App D LANGRIDGE) being declared the winner alleging interference over the final 100 metres. It was established that inside the final 25 metres of the race, BREAKAWAY shifted in and bumped OUR BALI HI resulting in that gelding becoming unbalanced. In considering the objection, in particular the momentum of both horses prior to contact being made and the proximity of the point of interference to the winning post, stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred BREAKAWAY would still have finished ahead of OUR BALI HI and the objection was dismissed. App D LANGRIDGE subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding (AR137(a)) in that he did permit BREAKAWAY to shift in after the 100 metres when insufficiently clear of SOUTHGATE which was checked and also OUR BALI HI which became unbalanced. App LANGRIDGE'S permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence after the Canberra meeting on Friday 13th September, 2002 and to expire on Sunday 22nd September on which day he may ride.

Race 5. CLASS FOUR HANDICAP, 1000 METRES:

GRUMPY knuckled over on jumping and lost ground.

Race 6. MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1200 METRES:

ROGUE TONES and NOT FUSSY missed the start…. MONA BEAR raced ungenerously in the early stages and hung out after the 700m resulting in it's rider being disadvantaged throughout… A HUKE (NOT FUSSY) explained that after missing the start his mount raced back in the field in the early stages, became awkwardly positioned near the 600 metres and was unable to improve until after straightening. He added that when put under pressure in the straight NOT FUSSY initially did not respond to his urging's and raced greenly however when balanced over the concluding stages the mare went to the line strongly. These explanations were accepted…. Near the 100 metres FUJI KID was crowded between NOT FUSSY and STARWAY TO HEAVEN both of which shifted ground.

Race 7. CLASS 2 HANDICAP, 1600 METRES:

BE GOOD TO MUM was slowly away and hung out in the middle stages…. After the 600 metres KIWI DESIRE became awkwardly positioned on the heels of BAYCREST, was held up and was subsequently unable to obtain clear running until near the 200 metres where, after obtaining a narrow run between DUPED AGAIN and HE'S SNOOPY, the gelding raced in restricted room to the line.… J WHITNEY (CASH ECONOMY) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (AR137(a)) in that after the 100 metres he made insufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in, resulting in HE'S SNOOPY being crowded from it's running and also resulting in KIWI DESIRE being crowded. J WHITNEY'S licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence after the Canberra meeting on Friday 13th September, 2002 and to expire on Saturday 21st September, 2002 on which day he may ride.

Race 8. MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1400 METRES:

ALZARINO began awkwardly resulting in App. C KARAKATSANIS sustaining a laceration to his right foot which made contact with the gates…… When the pace steadied near the 900 metres KAMBAH GREY was checked away from the heels of LIGHT WORKOUT and lost it's position. CHARHAYAA was checked in consequence …. Near the 100 metres GENERAL VANCE improved onto the heels of BEAUSUMO and was checked.

Quiet As, a striking filly by the former champion galloper and now sizzling young sire Octagonal, has made an auspicious start to her racing career with a runaway win on the first day of the Wyong Carnival today.

Part owned by flamboyant breeder and businessman John Singelton, Quiet As was having her first start for record breaking trainer John Hawkes.

With Sydney's current premiership leading jockey Darren Beadman in the saddle, the three-year-old cruised home to thrash her rivals by five and a quarter lengths.

Out of the former talented racemare Broann, Quiet As was the first leg of a winning double for Beadman.

Later in the afternoon he guided the Hawkes trained Coablo to victory in the feature event of the afternoon, the Mona Lissa Plate.

The Nick Moraitis owned grey mare was too strong for the Group One performer Gentle Genuis, while Kurrajong Miss was third.

While Beadman and Hawkes teamed up for a double, honours at the meeting were shared.

Chris Munce and Gai Waterhouse teamed up to win the first two events with Splish and Penetrator.
