It’s been hailed as the best Christmas party in Adelaide and who can doubt it? The Konica/Variety Club Christmas Twilight Meeting on Wednesday December 18 has it all - a perfect blend of celebration, racing, excitement, glamour, fun and spectacle.

Racing gets underway at around 3pm and the expected program of 9 races will keep jockeys and punters busy until 8pm. The partying goes on unabashed all afternoon but the true blue revelers burst into action when the feature band hit the stage shortly after the last race. There’s a special treat for race goers this year as the SAJC have been lucky enough to book one of the hottest local acts – the interestingly named Hairy Lemon!

Advance hospitality bookings for The Konica/Variety Club Twilight Meeting are indicating a bumper crowd. The most popular option has proven to be the new syndicated Konica Variety Club marquee. This marquee, located in the trackside village looks like its going to be a hive of fun, with the Variety Club promising plenty of activities specifically for the marquee’s patrons. Tickets are $71.50 per person and include pate and dip platters, a fantastic variety of finger food and, of course, an all-event drink package is available with beer, wine, sparkling and soft drinks included. Over 1200 are booked in this marquee so far.

SAJC CEO Steve Ploubidis view is that there’s little or no reason not to come along, with "Hospitality marquees and entertainment which will stretch from one end of the Victoria Park lawns to the other, we are anticipating a record crowd for this year’s race day. The Christmas Twilight meeting continues to grow in popularity and has become the hub of corporate and public festive celebrations leading into the Christmas break. Victoria Park offers a unique and relaxed atmosphere in the parklands which adds to the events appeal".

For those of you who haven’t organised to catch up with colleagues or friends, this event at only $10 provides the perfect atmosphere. A beer garden for all sits on the racecourse lawns and the surrounding gourmet food court offers everything you’ll need to keep you fuelled up for the action on track.

So make your Christmas merry by heading to Victoria Park on December 18.

Nominations for Sunday's Bordertown Cup meeting are strong and the Club is expecting to significantly build on last year's Cup day meeting - despite it being the most successful on record.

The $15,660 Woolshed Inn Bordertown Cup (1900m) has drawn 18 nominations from both South Australia and Victoria, and includes last Sunday's Kalangadoo Cup winner Cazique and third placegetter Claytondyer, as well as the trifecta from the recent Clare Cup - Evans, Carnivorous and Dholima's Daughter.

The $8360 Tatiara Meat Co. Christmas Handicap (1100m) has also drawn a strong 19 nominations with a number of in-form runners from both here and interstate. The Club has programmed eight races for the day.

"It is pleasing to see Clubs be rewarded for their efforts," Thoroughbred Racing SA Racing Manager Ian Hart said. "The Bordertown Racing Club, in offering returns to owners through prizemoney significantly higher than their level of funding have been duly supported with outstanding nominations for their Cup meeting."

The Bordertown Racing Club continues to go from strength to strength in both promotional activities and quality of fields.

RAIL: Normal Position

RACE 1 – QUIN MARINE HANDICAP 1000 metres

Stewards granted permission for C Lindop to replace apprentice A Darmanin as the rider of GOLD BREAKER owing to apprentice A Darmanin not arriving on course by 12.05pm and as no apprentice rider was available. In accepting apprentice A Darmanin’s explanation for his late arrival Stewards advised that in future he would be expected to conduct himself in a more professional manner.

GOLD BREAKER (C Lindop) knuckled on jumping away.

MERRIMAK (J Holder) was slow to jump.

On jumping away SO BELL KARA (C Bryant) shifted out abruptly taking CHEVITA (M Neilson) out on to GREG (J Potter) tightening that gelding on to SHARP FOCUS (M Hagley), which became unbalanced.

VIVIENNE (J Lyon) was inclined to race greenly and shifted out in the early stages.

Approaching the 700 metres SO BELL KARA (C Bryant), which was hanging out, shifted out abruptly on to LEADER’S PRIDE (T Creek) which became unbalanced and was obliged to steady off its heels.

RURAL FOREST (S Price) had difficulty in obtaining clear ground from the 300 metres until inside the 100 metres.

Approaching the finish VIVIENNE (J Lyon) shifted in abruptly and inconvenienced POLICIA (D Tootell) taking that filly in on to RURAL FOREST (S Price).

Stewards questioned C Bryant the rider of SO BELL KARA, which hung out throughout the event into the performance of that filly. C Bryant explained that his mount had been restless in the gates and on jumping had shifted out abruptly on to runners on his outside. He stated that SO BELL KARA had commenced to hang out immediately and approaching the 800 metres despite niggling at the filly it was reluctant to hold its position. He further added that from the 800 metres he had let the filly drift out as he had been instructed. Mr R Jolly, representing Mr R Smerdon confirmed that the stable had expected SO BELL KAMA to lead and were aware the filly may attempt to hang out. SO BELL KARA was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly to be shin sore in the near foreleg. Mr Jolly was advised that SO BELL KARA would be required to perform satisfactorily in an organised barrier trial and that a Veterinary Certificate to Race would be required prior to accepting for any future event.

RACE 2 – SOUTH AUSTRALIAN OLIVE OIL HANDICAP 1600 metres

On jumping away CLASSICAL ROCK (D Tootell) shifted out and brushed CARDONAGH (M Neilson).

Near the 1000 metres CARDONAGH (M Neilson) was obliged to steady off the heels of FURLANG (D Carney) as that gelding was restrained off the heels of SPECIAL TERMS (S Price).

Approaching the 200 metres MAKING THE ROAD (J Holder) in attempting a tight run outside of FURLANG (D Carney) was taken in marginally by CARDONAGH (M Neilson). At the same time THROTTLE (W Kerford) was taken out on to FURLANG (D Carney) by SLEDGE (C Bryant), which was inclined to shift out and away from ZIP TOP (C Lever) resulting in THROTTLE (W Kerford) hindquarters being turned in and became unbalanced and FURLANG (D Carney) having to check off his heels. C Bryant was advised although not solely responsible for the incident he would in future be expected to straighten his mount and relieve pressure.

RACE 3 – TONY’S TUNA INERNATIONAL HANDICAP 1450 metres

SMOOTH AS SILK was withdrawn by Stewards at 1.23pm acting on Veterinary advice that the mare was lame in the near foreleg. Mr L Macdonald the trainer of SMOOTH AS SILK was questioned as to why the mare’s scratching was not notified earlier. He pleaded guilty to a breach of ARR 114(a), he was fined $200.

The start of this race was delayed owing to GRISWALD and CHALTOM being difficult to load. Mr B Cozamanis trainer of GRISWALD and Mr J Gask trainer of CHALTOM whose horses’ were difficult to load at the start were advised that a repetition of their horses’ behaviour would lead to action being taken.

Correct weight for this race was delayed to allow Ms C Lindop rider of GRISWALD to view the official film over the concluding stages.

RENOIC was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

MARSCMER lost its off fore plate during the running of the race.

New Irrigation System for Port Lincoln

The Port Lincoln Racing Club will have a new irrigation system by the beginning of their 2003/2004 racing season.

The Club has been given approval for a $90,000 funding grant from Thoroughbred Racing SA towards the irrigation system with works commencing after the Port Lincoln season ends on April 13, 2003.

The irrigation system will also form part of the Clean Seas Project - a Federal Government project to utilise and purify effluent waste in the Port Lincoln district to A grade water.

"Implementing this irrigation system to service the racetrack and course proper will alleviate a fairly serious water shortage in the local area," Port Lincoln Racing Club Secretary Ian McCleery said. "Once the system is working in conjunction with the Clean Seas Project, the Port Lincoln Racing Club will have a constant supply of water. In the long run it will prove a very big cost saving to the Club."

The Club will be able to use effluent waste from the town of Port Lincoln to be stored in a reserve tank at the southern side of the racecourse and have an abundant supply of low-cost water.

"The Committee of the Port Lincoln Racing Club is very thankful to the Board of Thoroughbred Racing SA for their enormous co-operation in helping us through all the stages of the project," McCleery said.

"The Club also appreciates the behind the scenes work of John Cameron and track consultant Ray Hawke for their efforts. The type of irrigation system we are looking at would have been out of our reach but the grant makes it possible. The water system will not only allow us to continue to provide an excellent track but will provide a significant saving for the Club long term."
