Following consultation with Trainers, Staff, Industry and Turf Management consultants the Strathalbyn Racing Club has approved the restructure of the Ground Management of the Club.

The move is seen as a positive step in ensuring that the facilities meet an acceptable standard and address current deficiencies in the facility management process.

In the past a number of concerns have been raised by local and visiting trainers regarding the condition of the racetrack and training facilities and despite the best endeavors of the Club, the issues have not been able to be fully addressed. Following an inspection of the racetrack by Thoroughbred Racing SA Ltd consultant, Ray Hawke, the Committee of Strathalbyn Racing Club considered that whilst the public areas are accepted as one of the best of all racecourses in South Australia a greater effort was required to ensure that the Club remained a benchmark in the thoroughbred industry.

As a consequence of this decision the Committee has approved the restructure of grounds management within the Club and a position of Track Manager has been established. The Track Manager will be accountable to the Secretary of the Strathalbyn Racing Club Inc to ensure that the racetrack surfaces and environs are effectively maintained and prepared for trackwork, racemeetings and other approved events undertaken by the Strathalbyn Racing Club in accordance with the Club's Strategic Plan, and Australian and Local Rules of Racing. Other positions created are a Trainee Manager and Grounds-persons who will undertake grounds and facility maintenance under the direction of the Track Manager.

Secretary Nick Bawden emphasized that "all current ground-staff are eligible and are encouraged to apply for the positions which will be advertised widely in the near future."

Until such time as an appointment to the Track Manager position has been made, Ray Hawke has agreed to accept the role of coordinating the rehabilitation of the racetrack. Initial steps taken to address the concerns include the use of the new Verti-drain machine recently purchased by TRSA and the testing of ground core samples to ensure that no stone is left unturned to address the needs of the racing community.

Following the appointment of a Track Manager Ray Hawke will continue to act as a consultant to the Strathalbyn Racing Club thus ensuring that the most up-to-date techniques are adopted for the betterment of the track surfaces.

"The Strathalbyn racecourse is rapidly becoming recognized as one of the leading training facilities outside of Metropolitan Adelaide and we must ensure that everything is undertaken to provide that the needs of the trainers are addressed. The innovative water re-use scheme currently being completed has given the Racing Club a unique opportunity to ensure that this is achieved." Nick added.

The South Australian Jockey Club has implemented strategic prizemoney amendments to enhance the 2003 Adelaide Cup Carnival.

The establishment of a new $50,000 Fillies and Mares race on the Honda Ladies Day 17 May 2003 adds another highlight to this meeting. The race will be registered as the Proud Miss Stakes; however, a sponsorship opportunity exists for race day naming rights.

The Club endeavours to establish a feature mile race at the carnival has led to the Listed Pope Packaging Stakes receiving an increase to be run for $80,000 on Adelaide Cup Day 2003. Other feature races increased are the Group 2 Yallambee Classic $175,000 (up from $150,000) and the Group 3 Sires Produce Stakes $125,000 (up from $100,000).

During the Summer of Speed Carnival, the Group 3 Irwin Stakes has been elevated to $70,000 in prizemoney. This race acts as an ideal lead-up for elite mares aiming at the Group 2 $250,000 Swettenham Stud Stakes a fortnight later. Some small decreases in selected support black type races have eventuated without jeopardising their status to assist in the other prizemoney movements.

The establishment of the new fillies and mares race during the Adelaide Cup Carnival is with a view to attracting black type status for the race and to add another success factor to the Adelaide Cup Carnival.

RACE 2 : THE MORPHETTVILLE WETLANDS MILE - 1600 metres

J. Maund, the rider of MARCIN ON, reported that in the vicinity of the 1200 metres that gelding was inclined to lay out and on entering the straight commenced to hang out. MARCIN ON was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to be sore in both front fetlocks.

M. Henderson, the rider of FARHILLS, was reprimanded for continuing to use his whip on that gelding when it was clearly out of contention. M. Henderson was informed that future breaches would result in a penalty being imposed.

When questioned regarding her riding of GET UP in the middle stages of the event, H. McKechnie explained that she had anticipated the gelding racing forward and although racing three wide outside MOUNT BATTEN (J. Bowditch), she had been satisfied with her position and the way it had travelled until inside the 800 metres, where she had asked the gelding for an effort to clear MOUNT BATTEN. She added that she was concerned that she had to niggle her mount and with the feel it had given her from that point. H. McKechnie stated that, in her opinion, GET UP had raced a little flat. Mr. D. I. Dodson, the trainer of the gelding, stated that, in his opinion, the gelding had raced below expectation and he had some concerns that the geldings first up effort had taken more effect than he had expected. He gave an undertaking to report any change in the gelding’s conditions over the next seven days to Stewards. GET UP was subjected to an endoscopic examination subsequent to the event, which revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 : CATERFAIR HANDICAP - 1200 metres

DOLCE GABANA, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who detected soreness in the lower back.

RACE 4 : TENDERPLUS HANDICAP - 1100 metres

Mr. S. Webb, the trainer of ANATOLIA, was questioned regarding his failure to declare a rider for that mare as well as FIRETAINE (NZ) and LOCHI in Race 5. He was fined $100 for not declaring riders by the required time.

JEUNEOLA STAR, which was restless in its barrier stall, broke through the front of the stall and galloped riderless for some distance before being recaptured. Acting on Veterinary advice, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of JEUNEOLA STAR as 2.32 pm. Stewards ruled that all monies invested on JEUNEOLA STAR be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:

SP Bets are not subject to the deductions.

DEVIL IN DISGUISE (S. Cahill) jumped away awkwardly and brushed the inside gate.

DANCE THE MUSIC (S. Price) jumped away awkwardly.

S. Cahill, the rider of DEVIL IN DISGUISE, explained that after jumping awkwardly the mare had struggled with the pace of the race and had not settled as forward as he had expected. He stated that with the blinkers removed DEVIL IN DISGUISE was under pressure from inside the 800 metres.

RACE 5 : THE TOP CUT STAKES - 2000 metres

Near the 1400 metres MOONGARA (J. Bowditch) shifted out and contacted AGINCOURT EXPRESS (C. Lever), which was forced to race three wide for a short distance.

Near the 1300 metres FIRETAINE (NZ) (S. Price) improved onto the heels of LOCHI (C. Symons) and whilst being restrained, got its head up and shifted out onto OTTOMAN (W. Kerford).

FRENZEL RHOMB (J. Holder) was inclined to lay in under pressure after entering the straight and proved difficult to ride. FRENZEL RHOMB was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 6 : CITY OF MARION STAKES - 1200 metres

KING’S CHOICE (D. Tootell) was slow to jump.

Near the 1100 metres KING’S CHOICE (D. Tootell) shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of DIMNESS (D. Carney).

Approaching the 700 metres RALLY (J. Bowditch) rolled in and tightened REAL TIME (NZ) (S. Price), which was obliged to steady momentarily.

Approaching the 200 metres DIMNESS (D. Carney) shifted out and brushed KEN CHEVAL (Damien Holland).

B. Claridge, the rider of INTREPID ASTRONAUT, explained that he had been instructed to attempt to lead, however, as a result of being marginally slow to begin and being held tight shortly after the start by REAL TIME (NZ) (S. Price), he had been unable to carry out his instructions.

Inside the 400 metres SPRING HAVEN (C. Buchiw) became held up whilst racing inside SCIATICA (D. Tootell).

SPAR was subjected to an endoscopic examination subsequent to the race, which revealed acute inflammation of the pharynx.

RACE 8 : ARISTOCRAT ARABIAN NIGHTS HANDICAP - 1800 metres

MYPOLLONGA, which had been restless and became cast in the gates, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to start.

Mr. D. Clarken, the trainer of ROMANOUS JEWEL, which proved difficult to load, was advised that a repetition of the gelding’s behaviour would lead to action being taken against it.

Inside the 1600 metres DALNY ROAD (S. Price) was obliged to check off the heels of LOCKMASTER (D. Carney), which shifted in at the same time as ROCKOLOGY (NZ) (P. Marks) rolled out and brushed MUSIC ROYALE (M. Neilson) resulting in that gelding shifting out onto DALNY ROAD and as a result DALNY ROAD was obliged to race three wide. D. Carney was advised that, although not singularly responsible for the incident, he would be expected to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled in future.

At the entrance to the straight CROWNED SERDAR (B. Claridge) shifted out and brushed CROSS ME NOT (D. Tootell).

Thoroughbred Racing S.A. Limited at its Board meeting held on 28 November agreed to extend its support for four regional management areas over two years. As part of its ongoing commitment, TRSA has allocated $87,000 to help ensure the success of this teamwork initiative.

The four regions are grouped as follows:

Southern: Murray Bridge/Strathalbyn, Mindarie-Halidon and Kangaroo Island Racing Clubs.
Northern: Balaklava/Gawler/Clare, Hawker, Jamestown, Roxby Downs, Quorn and Port Augusta Racing Clubs.
Western: Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay, Kimba, Lock, Streaky Bay, Ceduna and Penong Racing Clubs.
Limestone Coast: Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte and Bordertown Racing Clubs.

Messrs Chris Biggs, Mark Fullford, Ian McCleery and Doug Hall are each to be deemed the Business Development Manager for their respective regions and progress joint club initiatives, improved standards and customer service in those regions. One of the key objectives is to have one person responsible in each of the four regions for progressing each region's management issues and to liaise directly with TRSA.

Further to the joint management initiative by Strathalbyn/Murray Bridge, the recent appointment of a Business Development Manager by the Limestone Coast Region's five clubs is seen as a huge step forward for enhancing ways to work together and achieve success through teamwork.

Recently both the Northern and Southern regions jointly appointed sales representatives reinforcing a preparedness for clubs to work together and focus on sales to generate additional income.

The racing industry continues to focus on the goals of Prosperity 2005 and grow revenue streams beyond wagering.

Talented galloper Umacall has been sold to interests in Hong Kong.

The three-year-old, who was prepared by Gordon Richards at Morphettville, finished his first campaign of just four starts with two wins, a second and a game fourth in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas behind Dextrous.

Richards said Umacall was sent to the paddock with the aim of running him in next year's South Australian Derby, but the owners had received an offer "too good to refuse".

"I'm really disappointed, obviously, because he was potentially the best horse I've ever had," Richards said. "But the owner, Brenton Willoughby, races a lot of horses and it's understandable if he's got a very good offer for him to sell. I do know it was one of the hardest decisions Brenton has had to make."

According to Richards, vets went over the gelding for two days before giving him a clean bill of health.

"As much as they tried they couldn't find a fault with him - he was a perfect athlete," Richards said.

"It's sad to see such a nice horse go but, as they say, that's racing."

Empress Ready to Waltz at Morphettville

1105empresswaltz.jpg (14718 bytes)Leading South Australian jockey Jason Holder is looking forward to being reunited with classy mare Empress Waltz in Saturday's $40,000 Listed City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

Holder had ridden the David Huxtable-trained mare at all four runs this time in - for three wins - before she blitzed her opposition up the straight at Flemington on Cup day.

"It will be good to be back aboard," Holder said. "I had the option of going to Melbourne to ride her but had a lot of commitments here, and decided to stay. She's flying at the moment and it was great to see David take out a race at Flemington with her."

Holder, too, is in form - not only sitting atop the tree of local riders with 23 city wins but he also boasts the best strike-rate of any of the city jockeys - with one winner every five rides.

1105empresswaltz2.jpg (11067 bytes)"Things are going really well and I'm working hard to keep the momentum up," Holder said.

Of Empress Waltz's 12 wins, she has yet to be able to break through at Morphettville, something Holder hopes to change this weekend.

"She has a really good sprint but needs to pace on," Holder said.

"She is best when she can get cover so she's drawn well (in barrier four) - I just hope there's so speed in the race to let her come home over the top of them."

According to Huxtable, Empress Waltz has taken her Melbourne trip in her stride and is ready to reproduce another big performance tomorrow.

"She had about four days in the paddock after coming back and took it easy for the first week or so," Huxtable said. "I've given her two solid hit-outs to have her ready for this but she seems to love being kept fresh. As long as she's happy she puts in her best."

1105ewrtosc.jpg (15503 bytes)Saturday's race will give Huxtable a better picture as to what direction to take with the mare in the coming months. The natural follow on from Saturday's race is the Listed Durbridge Stakes (1300m) at Cheltenham Park on December 14 before the Group 3 Christmas Handicap (1450m) at the same track on Boxing day. On Saturday, January 18 there is also the Listed New Year's Gift (1450m) at Victoria Park.

The other option is to freshen the mare to return in the Group 3 Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on February 1 as a lead-up to the Group 2 Swettenham Stud Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville a fortnight later.

"There's plenty of options around for her over the next couple of months," Huxtable said.

"She's done a great job this time in, winning four of five starts, and I don't want to push her too hard. She's such a brilliant sprinter her best efforts have been over shorter distances, but with a good pace on over further I still think she can win a good race. I'm undecided what to do with her at this stage but we'll see how she comes through Saturday's run."

The Tony McEvoy-trained gelding, affectionately known as FOO by his 31 loyal owners and army of followers, returned to the stables at Lindsay Park today to begin preparing for his Autumn campaign.

Syndicate manager, Sport 927's Bryan Martin, said the talented galloper is being set for another lucrative preparation which will culminate with the $S3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) on May 17.

"I saw him when he was on the way to the paddock and he looked magnificent," Martin said.

"He could have run in the Sandown Classic but we felt it was better to tip him out before he was over the top. He spelled at Lindsay Park but came back into work today and all reports are that he's done really well."

0914fieldsofomagh2.jpg (20132 bytes)Martin said the gelding, a winner of the Feehan Stakes before placing behind Northerly in both the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup, would resume in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield in February.

"He'll resume in the C.F Orr and then go on to races like the St. George and the Australian Cup," Martin said.

"After that he may run in either the Ranvet of maybe even the BMW Stakes but his ultimate aim this time in is the International Cup in Singapore."

Martin purchased Fields Of Omagh at the Melbourne Premier sales on the advice of Murray and Jill Bell for $50,000. He didn't race until three, but has since won more than a million dollars.

"It's been a magical ride for all the owners," Martin said.

"From being beaten in maidens to winning Group races and going within a neck of winning the Caulfield Cup. With any luck he returns as well as he left off and there's more fun in store."
