Brilliant South Australian galloper Manetti has been denied breaking a modern day weight carrying record at Port Lincoln today by a locally trained bolter.

Robert King, known locally as "Rocky", pulled off an upset in the feature race of the day when his galloper Ryko, who's better known as a distance performer, downed the crowd favourite by three quarters of a length.

At just his second run back since a bleeding attack the George Dawson trained Manetti tried his heart out but on the day found Ryko just a touch too sharp.

The gelding was originally weighted with 68 kilograms and promising apprentice Andrew Stead was engaged to enable three kilograms to be reduced bringing his back to 65 kilos.

South Australian Country Trainers Welcome Subsidy

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/33416--sp-780597458.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA) have taken a positive step to assure country racing in the state continues after announcing... size=small}
Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA) have taken a positive step to assure country racing in the state continues after announcing a starters subsidy would be paid to all unplaced races at non-TAB meetings in the state.

Country trainers have welcomed the most which they said was overdue. Any horse which finishes out of a place at a country meeting would receive a $60 subsidy.

Trevor Trenowden, one of the state's leading country trainers who is based on the Far West Coast at Ceduna, was pleased with the announcement.

"It's nice for this subsidy to finally come through," Trenowden said. "We have been lobbying officials in the city for a long while."

Trenowden said the move would help to alleviate some of the excessive costs faced by country trainers.

"Trainers in the country are really up against it," he said. "Out here the feed is more expensive, there's extra travel and of course our stakes are so much lower."

The $60 subsidy, which is understood to have been mooted for a number of years, will start immediately according to TRSA Racing Manager Ian Hart.

"A $60 unplaced subsidy will be paid to non prizemoney earning horses at Non-TAB meetings," Mr Hart announced.

"This is in addition to existing float rebates particular clubs offer."

"This unplaced subsidy will support the efforts of the smaller clubs and provide some reward for connections of horses racing at the lower levels of competition," he added.

Ironically Trenowden's home club of Ceduna will be the first club who will be able to offer the subsidy.

Ceduna will be holding the next non-TAB meeting in South Australia on Saturday December 14.

Other clubs set to benefit from today's news will be Tumby Bay, Lock, Kimba, Streaky Bay, Penong, Hawker, Quorn, Clare (during Easter) and Kangaroo Island.

Guineas May Prove SA Form Pointer

1116dextrous.jpg (15195 bytes)Punters could do well to remember last Saturday's Group 2 Sandown Guineas as a future pointer to the Adelaide Cup carnival next year.

Many of the young three-year-olds who tackled the 1600m of the Guineas will be aimed at either the Group 1 Malaysia Airlines Derby or the Group 1 Feltex Carpets SA Oaks - both over 2500m at Morphettville next May.

In the Guineas, Dextrous defeated Lawson's Storm with Cool Azz finishing third. Running a game fourth was the inexperienced Umacall after drawing a wide gate and facing the breeze throughout.

The John Hawkes stable, who train Dextrous, have already indicated the filly will be aimed at the South Australian Oaks, while David Baflour, trainer of the runner-up, will aim Lawson's Storm at the Derby.

"He arrived home from Melbourne today and will go to the paddock later this week," Balfour said.

1116dextrous2.jpg (13937 bytes)"He is still very green and immature and will benefit from a good spell, so he'll go out now and come back for the Derby and the lead-up races."

Stablemate Cobamuse, who finished eighth in the Guineas, will be aimed at shorter races.

"He really didn't run the trip, so he'll be aimed at shorter three-year-old races - like the Yallambee Stakes - over the Adelaide Cup carnival."

Umacall, having just his fourth start in the Guineas, has already gone to the paddock and will also be aimed at the Adelaide Cup carnival next year, although he has been nominated for the Group 1 Cadbury Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in February.

"He did a great job in the Guineas," trainer Gordon Richards said. "He had to do all the work and the horse that went with him dropped right out of it. He was entitled to as well, but kept fighting on. He copped a bump from the winner near the turn and became unbalanced but, after straightening up he was actually coming again on the line.

1116dextrous3.jpg (12210 bytes)"Greg Childs got off him and suggested we try him as a stayer next time in and I've always felt he would appreciate a bit of ground. We are leaning to the Derby in Adelaide but the Cadbury Guineas is also under consideration. We'll make a decision as it gets closer."

Cool Azz, who finished third in the Guineas, will not be tested as a stayer next time in and will be aimed at the Cadbury Guineas.

"I think 1600m is as far as he wants," trainer Brain Cox said. "He's in the paddock now and will be out for a month before returning late in the year."

Others from the Guineas, such as the Lee Freedman-trained Mummify (Jeune - Cleopatra's Girl by At Talaq) and the Tony McEvoy trained Larrocha (Danehill - Kensington Gardens by Grosvenor) are likely candidates for South Australia's classic three-year-old events next May.

They, of course, may have a hard time overcoming strong stayer Hydrometer should trainer Leon Macdonald choose to run the gelding in Adelaide. The VRC Derby runner-up will either be aimed at the local staying events or the AJC Derby in the Autumn.

Mount Gambier Officials Have TRSA Support

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/23065--sp-24679679.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=The Mount Gambier Racing Club has recently been the medium of some misleading information regarding the club's financial position.The club... size=small}
The Mount Gambier Racing Club has recently been the medium of some misleading information regarding the club's financial position.

The club wishes to report the following information:

The accounts for the financial year ending 30 June 2002 indicate an operating profit in excess of $9000 (pre depreciation of non club funded assets).

The secretary manager duties will be contracted out to a company and that company will be responsible for the full range of financial and administrative duties.

The Chief Executive of Thoroughbred Racing SA is satisfied with the club in respect to:

  • the strategic management process and preparation of a 3 year business plan
  • very positive involvement in relation to the new Regional Business Development Manager position for the Limestone Coast Racing district
  • the method of managing the secretary manager role and functions.
  • The 2001/2002 financial position of the club.

Late yesterday Mr Cameron advised that TRSA deferred sending an accountant down to Mt Gambier due to the positive progress being made and subject to Mt Gambier providing a report and action plan to TRSA for its next Board Meeting. The accountant was available to provide assistance and to ensure we were operating within the guidelines and policies set by TRSA.

With regard to the track upgrade, any track refurbishment obviously encounters some tough times, but the club, along with TRSA have continued to provide race meetings and training facilities for owners and trainers thanks to the cooperation of other clubs in the district, namely Millicent, Penola, Casterton, Bordertown, and Naracoorte. Thanks also must go to the trainers for their cooperation during this time. The upgrade is on schedule and within budget and certainly will be a great facility for the future.

Captivate You Leads SA Spring Series

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/21284--sp-250513058.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Honest filly Captivate You looks to have this year's Spring Series at her mercy having set up a big lead... size=small}
Honest filly Captivate You looks to have this year's Spring Series at her mercy having set up a big lead from her nearest rival.

The series, for fillies and mares and comprising five heats and a final, has a $5000 bonus attached for the connections of the horse that accumulates the most points.

Points are awarded as 10 for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one point for any other placing.

The five heats - at Balaklava, Murray Bridge, Gawler, Morphettville and Naracoorte - have been run and won, leaving only the final this Sunday at Strathalbyn as part of the big Vigneron's day meeting.

The final is a Class 5 event, for the fillies and mares who contested the heats, worth $20,000.

Captivate You, prepared by Dennis O'Leary at Normanville, has run in three heats of the series, finishing runner-up at both Murray Bridge and Morphettville (pictured above, gold cap), as well as winning a heat at Balaklava.

"She is a tough little mare who tries very hard," O'Leary said. "She has been a touch unlucky not to have won all three heats she contested. She is pigeon-toed, and has a bit of trouble with the tighter tracks which is why Imissed running her at Gawler and concentrated on the bigger circuits. She has a good record at Strathalbyn, too, so I think she's in with a good chance again this Sunday."

Apprentice Chris Bryant has ridden the mare at her three runs this time in, and will again be aboard on Sunday.

Captivate You has ammassed 26 points (eight, eight and 10) and holds a big lead over her nearest rival, the Bryon Cozamanis-trained Cozarvy, on 18 points.

Basically, Cozarvy has to win and Captivate You has to run worse than seventh to not win the $5000 bonus.

In total, the fillies and mares series has provided $72,500 in prizemoney over the six races with excellent representation in each of the events from across the state.
