O’Loughlin) had improved and gone to the front and as a result C. Bryant was able to ease his mount in an attempt to get cover. C. Bryant further explained that throughout the race BONNIE WEE CHARLIE had not been suited by the lack of speed in the event, and from the 600 metres he had commenced to ride his mount with the whip, but the gelding had only moderately responded to his riding and failed to finish the race off strongly.

RACE 1 – CRAWFORD & CO. CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1000 metres

Inside the 200 metres BRIGHT ROCK (Darren Holland) continued to lay out under pressure and shifted out, contacting SMYTZER’S MUSTANG (A. Stead) on a number of occasions.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit Darren Holland, rider of BRIGHT ROCK, and the gelding’s Trainer Mr. J. Gask, to view the official footage over the concluding stages. After doing so D. Holland declined to lodge an objection and Correct Weight was declared.

Approaching the finish FLAUTIST (S. Price) shifted in and contacted GOLD EMERALD (T. Creek), which laid back for a couple of strides.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit T. Creek, rider of GOLD EMERALD the 4th Placegetter, to view the official footage over the concluding stages. After doing so T. Creek lodged an objection against the 3rd Placegetter FLAUTIST (S. Price), on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding stages. After considering the evidence, viewing the official footage and acting on their own observations, Stewards were not convinced the interference suffered by GOLD EMERALD was sufficiently significant to warrant the placings being altered, and the objection was dismissed.

DANCING LASS suffered a laceration to the inside of its right hind leg during the race.

RACE 3 – NINA MAIDEN PLATE 3YO & UP - 1400 metres (Inner Track)

Mr. G. Richards, Trainer of FURLANG, was fined $50 for having failed to declare a rider for the gelding by the required time.

Approaching the 200 metres WOLF TRAP (C. Lever) was inclined to lay away from SHORE LORD (D. Carney) on its inside and shifted out, contacting ICE ON MARS (J. Potter). RACE 6 – WILBURTINS DISTANCE CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 2000 metres (Outer Track)

SAPRISTI (NZ), which had lashed out at the barrier on arrival at the start, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported the mare had sustained a laceration to its off hind fetlock and was not fit to start. Acting on that advice SAPRISTI (NZ) was withdrawn by Stewards at 3.40 p.m.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on SAPRISTI (NZ) be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN 27 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE 19 cents in the dollar.
SP bets are subject to the deductions.

RATHER GAZE (D. Tootell) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

When questioned regarding his riding of COMO PRINCE, J. Holder explained that he had ridden the gelding in similar fashion to its last start, when it had won at Gawler. He stated, on that occasion the gelding had settled back in the field and had finished strongly. He added that in today’s event his mount had travelled well and on straightening he felt he was close enough to the leader to figure in the finish, if his mount had shown the same acceleration that it had at its previous start. J. Holder stated that in hindsight he may have improved his position a little earlier than he had, however, this tactic may not have provided a better result, as it was his opinion that his mount had become one paced when placed under pressure, and had disappointed him in not being able to take ground off the leader. Stewards advised J. Holder his explanation would be noted. COMO PRINCE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – COWDEN (SA) PTY LTD CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1250 metres (Inner Track)

MULTICHAMP (T. Creek) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in onto SWITCH VISION (B. Claridge).

KENTUCKY NUGGET (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out onto GUIDELIGHT (J. Maund). Shortly after WANNA PLAY CHICKEN (A. Stead) shifted in and tightened GUIDELIGHT, at the same time as IT’S A GREY (M. Hoppo) shifted out, taking VENGADAME (J. Potter) out, tightening KENTUCKY NUGGET.

In the vicinity of the 500 metres GUIDELIGHT (J. Maund), which was inclined to hang out, got its head up and raced ungenerously.

Approaching the 300 metres GUIDELIGHT (J. Maund) was taken out by ALFAH SCENE (S. Price), which shifted out, at the same time as ETERNAL SONG (C. Buchiw) shifted in marginally, taking MULTICHAMP (T. Creek) in onto GUIDELIGHT, resulting in that filly being forced to check off the heels of ALFAH SCENE. In being checked GUIDELIGHT over re-acted and became severely unbalanced. Stewards took no further action as they considered no one rider to be at fault.

After passing the winning post ETERNAL SONG dislodged C. Buchiw. Mr. E. Murtagh, Trainer of ETERNAL SONG, which had also dislodged C. Buchiw en route to the start, was advised that similar unruly behaviour by the mare may lead to action being taken against it.

MULTICHAMP sustained a small laceration to its near hind cannon during the event.

KENTUCKY NUGGET was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported the gelding was exhibiting signs of respiratory distress

Thoroughbred Racing SA Stewards have instigated a new initiative in the fluctuating fortunes of local apprentices.

Every Monday, Stewards will publish the minimum weight each South Australian apprentice rode at recent meetings.

Chairman of Stewards, Mr Graham Loch, said the information would be of benefit to all the industry.

"This has been introduced in an attempt to provide industry participants and punters with more up-to-date information than what has been previously available," Loch said.

"It will allow us to track apprentice weights and be in a position to ensure they are riding at the correct weight or to act against an apprentice who is not being responsible.

"It will also give owners, trainers and punters a better indicator as to what weight an apprentice is capable of riding."

To find the list, simply click on APPRENTICES on the Thoroughbred Racing SA HOME PAGE , then click on the link to Minimum Apprentice Riding Weights.
