Unrocel Saint Melbourne Bound
- Tuesday, 01 October 2002 00:00
Promising mare Unrocel Saint will open her spring account at Flemington on Monday.
Strathalbyn trainer Mark Minervini has been patiently waiting for the right race for the lightly-raced mare, and has selected a restricted event down the 1000m straight.
Unrocel Saint, who has a win and a second placing from just two starts, has been in Melbourne for almost a month and is primed to run well.
"I was going to run her a couple of weeks ago, but she didnt travel over as well as expected," Minervini said. "Then I was going to run her last weekend at Sandown but there was a fair bit of rain the night before so I kept her for another day. She was entered for the Jayco Stakes at Flemington this Saturday but I decided upon the easier option on Monday.
"She easily won an 800m jump-out here at Caulfield this morning and is going along really well."
The mare, a daughter of Super Imposer's half-sister Pheroz Fantasy by Last Tycoon, had punters scrambling for their black books after an amazing debut win at Cheltenham Park in April.
Approaching the corner, Unrocel Saint was a clear last and more than a dozen lengths from the lead but sprouted wings to score strongly. Given the last 600m of the race was run in 33.40 seconds, her sectionals were indicative of a good horse in the making.
"She produced a devastating finish on debut something only good horses do," Minervini said. "Weve been pretty patient with her and Id rate her one of the better horses Ive trained. Shes up to stakes grade for sure."
After Mondays assignment, Minervini will run the mare in the Group 3 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) for mares on Caulfield Cup day (October 19).
"I think shes a sprinter/miler, so that looks a suitable target for her," Minervini said. "Im just not sure after that. You have to play it by ear a bit with the Last Tycoons to work out if they are going to get a bit of ground. If she measures up, well look at a mile race at Flemington in Cup week, if not, well find an easier sprint somewhere."
Unrocel Saint, raced by a well-known South Australian racing family the Le Cornus will be ridden by Damien Oliver on Monday.
Stablemate Savage Attack has pulled up well after finishing second to Super Impressive at Caulfield on Sunday and will back up at Flemington this weekend.
The consistent gelding, already a stakes winner at the track, will be having his third run in three weeks but is thriving, according to the stable.
"He went close on Sunday but, at the end of the day, I think Damien Oliver on the winner was the difference," Minervini said. "I know hes having his third run in as many weeks but I think the first two runs have only just topped him off. Hes absolutely thriving over here and will run in the Gilgai Stakes (1200m) up the straight this weekend."
Savage Attack won the Listed Creswick Stakes over the same course and distance in June. He will be ridden by Andrew Findlay, who has been riding trackwork for Minervini.

Agalia Primed at Melbourne Hit-Run Mission
- Monday, 30 September 2002 00:00
Speedy mare Agalia is being primed for a first-up assault at Caulfield on Saturday week.
The five-year-old, prepared by leading Morphettville trainer David Balfour, hasnt raced since finishing fifth in the Listed Liz Davenport Classic (1050m) at Morphettville in May.
She trialled nicely at Victoria Park today, though, and is being aimed at the Adairs Plate (1200m) for mares on October 12.
"She ran third in her trial but went really well," Balfour said. "She wasnt asked to do too much. I think shes best when fresh so we decided to give her the chance to run in a decent race in Melbourne first-up."
Agalia has five wins and a placing from just five starts and was an unlucky ninth in the Group 2 Swettenham Stud Stakes behind Suzy Grey in February.
Balfour will also return to Melbourne the following week - Caulfield Cup day - with stablemates Cobamuse and Ten Carat.
Cobamuse broke his maiden status only yesterday but has had six minor placings including four in stakes grade. He will run in the Listed Tupperware Cup (1400m) for colts and geldings.
"He was one of the best-performed maidens going around," Balfour said. "He was stiff in a few of his runs and should have been a stakes winner. His form behind horses such as Lashed and Hydrometer is good as well."
Balfour said the gelding had pulled up well after winning by more than five lengths in Class 2 company at Victoria Park yesterday and would appreciate the step up to 1400m.
Former Kiwi Ten Carat, a last-start winner at Morphettville, has continued to thrive since arriving at Morphettville and will run in the Fillies and Mares Classic (1100m).
"She won her first two starts in New Zealand but her form after that was terrible," Balfour said. "She settled in really well and her trackwork was sensational leading into her first start for me but, having never seen her race, it was hard to know what she was going to do. She won quite easily though and has continued to thrive, so we decided to give her the chance in better grade."
Meanwhile veteran sprinter Mint Of Gold, who also trialled brilliantly at Victoria Park today, will begin his campaign at the same track Park on October 19.
"Hes had so many problems throughout his career but is going about as well as ever," Balfour said. "He trialled super but Id just like to get him back to winning form."

"Grand Final" Field for Murray Bridge Cup
- Thursday, 26 September 2002 00:00
This Saturday the Murray Bridge Racing Club hosts South Australias only Saturday provincial meeting, which coincides with AFL Grand Final day.
Racegoers are treated to a host of on-course activities, including the Clipsal Super Screen screening the football action, along with a great days racing.
The $62,100 Listed Finniss Lodge / Alcohol Go East Murray Bridge Gold Cup is being run for the first time over 1600m instead of the traditional 2400m and jumps during the Grand Final half-time break.
Local programming has given participants a number of 1600m lead-up options to this race and the form is well exposed, although the best form-line for the race may come from the recent Listed Baker Young Stockbrokers Trophy (1600m) at Morphettville. The winner was Oliver Beer, followed by Mustaagel, Oxford Dollar and Terminus Prince.
That quartet may fight out the finish again but the improver from the race is Oxford Dollar, prepared by Bill Smart at Oakbank.
Oxford Dollar was having just his second run back from a spell after finishing 14th in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup behind The A Train in May.
Last start, the gelding charged home late in the race to grab third but will strip much fitter for Saturdays assignment.
"He went into that race definitely needing the run," Smart said. "He has had a boil on his wither and I wasnt able to put a saddle on him for a couple of weeks leading up to the race. The only thing I could do was to lead him off another horse down at Goolwa beach. Under the circumstances, his run was excellent and hell be much fitter for this weekend."
Importantly, especially for a backmarker, Oxford Dollar has an excellent record at both the track and at 1600m.
After Saturdays run, Oxford Dollar will then run in the $136,000 Listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m) at Cranbourne on October 9. From there, Smart will aim the gelding at the lesser spring staying events.
"Im really happy with the way hes come on over the last couple of weeks," Smart said. "After Cranbourne, well look at races such as Country Cups, the JRA and Moonee Valley Cups, the SAAB Quality and maybe the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. His form will have to warrant the trip to Melbourne, though."
Last weekends Wolf Blass Barossa Cup winner, None For The Road, is backing up this Saturday, as is runner-up Brave Decision, who won the Darwin Cup last month. The Balaklava Cup winner Chading is also among the entrants.
The interesting runner in the race is Emission, prepared by Cliff Brown, who is entered for todays (Thursday) meeting at Ballarat.

Former Hong Kong Galloper Running for the Members
- Friday, 27 September 2002 00:00
City racing breaks from tradition this weekend and takes place at Victoria Park for the Radio TAB Sunday Family Race Day.
The long, green lawns of the city course provide the perfect location for a relaxing family picnic. Theres a live band booked to entertain between races and free rides will keep the kids occupied.
The most interesting runner of the day is former Hong Kong galloper Royal Liftout in the Radio TAB Class 6 Handicap, who makes his Australian debut for Tony McEvoy.
The gelding hasnt raced since January after breaking down, and has a win and five placings from 15 starts.
"He was bred at Lindsay Park and went to Hong Kong as a yearling," McEvoy said. "He did win a race there and placed a few times but returned after an injury. He seems sound now, though.
"Hes a horse that is probably best suited up to a mile but he does have a bit of dash, so it will be interesting to see how he measures up here."
The 40 participants in the SAJCs "Young Members Racing Group" will get to see their colours for the first time with Around The Block in the Sports Bet Breakfast Class 1 Handicap.
The syndicate, comprising new young members, race two horses with Lindsay Park, the other Roister.
"Its a fabulous concept and well be striving to make it successful," trainer Tony McEvoy said. "We need more new blood in racing, especially younger people."
The YMRG (Young Members Racing Group) will have a marquee on the grandstand lawn to cheer home their first runner.
For further information on the day contact Bridgette Robinson at the SAJC on 08 8295 0103

Little Fined After Positive Swab in Adelaide
- Monday, 23 September 2002 00:00
Little fronted the South Australian stewards at Morphettville today and was fined $6,000 after Serai returned a swab which "containted metabolites of a prohibited substance Acepromazine.
Evidence was taken from Little, Morphettville based trainer John Hall, who was stabling the horse while it was in Adelaide and apprentice rider Kypros Louca.
Serai was disqualified from the Kevern Klemich Memorial Handicap, a race which was run at Cheltenham on July 27. The galloper finished unplaced and stewards were not forced to amend any prizemoney positions.
Stewards advised they found Hall had "not breached the Rules" and had no case to answer.
