RACE 1 – LONG’S SAND & METAL MAIDEN PLATE – 1008 metres

Stewards permitted Apprentice C. Bryant to replace C. Lever on JORDABBEY, when no Senior Rider was available.

Stewards permitted Apprentice K. Louca to replace W. Kerford on GO, when no Senior Rider was available.

W. Kerford’s explanation for his late arrival for this event was accepted by Stewards.

C. Lever, the declared rider of JORDABBEY, was fined $100 under ARR 120(b) for being overweight.

JORDABBEY (C. Bryant), GO (K. Louca) and PHYLL THE FLYER (J. Bowditch) were all slow to begin.

Racing to the 700 metres TELBON GOLD (N. Tomizawa) shifted in slightly, resulting in YOU EN (H. Hoppo) shifting away from that gelding and in consequence tightening RUSTIC WHIRL (M. Neilson) in onto SOCIAL HOST (B. Vale), which resulted in that gelding losing its position.

Racing to the 450 metres GO (K. Louca) over-raced and had to be checked to avoid the heels of MY CHEEKY (C. Lindop).

PHYLL THE FLYER lost its off hind plate during the race.

Mr. R. Paech, Trainer of GO, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the gelding accepting for any future event.

RACE 2 – MOHAWK LODGE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1208 metres

SEA THE WAY (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 700 metres MAZUMA MIRAGE (K. Louca) rolled out and inconvenienced FLEET DAPPER (C. Lindop).

RACE 3 – MURRAY HARVY JEWELLERS MAIDEN PLATE – 1608 metres

FULL SPEC (Darren Holland) jumped away awkwardly and brushed the outside of the gate.

Racing inside the 400 metres NAOMI PREVAILS (NZ) (T. Creek) rolled out and brushed CARRAJA (J. Bowditch), which in turn brushed SLICK RACER (S. Price) and as a result of the contact that gelding shifted in, brushing CARRAJA. SLICK RACER continued to make contact with NAOMI PREVAILS (NZ), which then resulted in that mare shifting out, making heavy contact with CARRAJA. After considering the evidence, Stewards were unable to attribute the blame to any one rider.

RACE 4 – KILKENNY CASTINGS CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1608 metres

Racing to the 1100 metres, due to the pace of the race slackening, FULL GALLOP (J. Lyon) eased and as a result AWAY WITH THE FAIRIES (J. Holder) had to be steadied to avoid that gelding’s heels and in consequence DANCERKOV (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of AWAY WITH FAIRIES.

RACE 5 – MURRAY BRIDGE MOTOR INN CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1208 metres

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of LIPGLOSS at 2.41 p.m., acting on Veterinary advice that the horse was sore in the withers and unfit to start. Mr. J. Hickmott, Trainer of LIPGLOSS, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the mare accepting for any future event.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on LIPGLOSS be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 2 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 2 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are not subject to the deductions.

RATHER GAZE (M. Hoppo) was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start STRAIGHT BY (D. Mittiga) was tightened for room due to MAKESUM (J. Maund), on its outside, shifting in and ROYAL POINT (NZ) (B. Claridge), on its inside, shifting out. As a result, STRAIGHT BY shifted in and clipped the heels of ROYAL POINT (NZ).

RACE 6 – HYGAIN SOUTHERN STOCK FOODS CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1008 metres

GOLD ABACUS (B. Vale) was slow to begin.

CHEVITA (Darren Holland) was very slow to begin.

Racing to the 800 metres OLD SEA SALT (W. Kerford) laid out, resulting in WEST STREET (T. Creek) brushing SMYTER’S VIEW (NZ) (S. Price) on its outside, and in consequence WEST STREET lost ground.

Racing to the 200 metres CHEVITA (Darren Holland) had to be eased to avoid the heels of WEST STREET (T. Creek), due to that gelding rolling out under pressure.

CHEVITA lost its near hind plate during the race.

OLD SEA SALT lost its near fore plate during the race.

RACE 7 – DERMODY PETROLEUM CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1408 metres

When the gates were released WATTIWARRIGANNA (Ms. M. Henderson) was hampered by TELBON LOTTO (N. Tomizawa), which jumped outwards.

M. Neilson, rider of SCENARAJA, explained that due to his wide barrier, and his instructions not to race wide, he had got further back in the race than anticipated. M. Neilson explained that over the final 400 metres SCENARAJA responded to his riding and ran out the race strongly.

RACE 8 – RIVERSIDE HOTEL FRONT BAR / SABIS FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE – 1208 metres:

SOVEREIGN ACCOUNT (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, hampering SUDDEN ALERT (M. Neilson), which in turn shifted in and inconvenienced DIVINYL (NZ) (C. Lever).

C. Bryant, rider of BIG RED MACHINE, was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in at the 900 metres, resulting in LA BELLA DAWN (D. Tootell) shifting in, causing TAOH (J. Maund) to be eased to avoid the heels of that filly and in consequence DIVINYL (NZ) (C. Lever) and ZIP TOP (M. Hoppo) were both hampered.

Over the final 50 metres BELLA BIANCO (C. Lindop) laid in and as a result that rider was unable to ride the mare out in her normal manner.

O'Sullivan Chasing Cup Quadrella With Beer

0313danosullivan.jpg (7594 bytes)Aquanita trainer Dan O’Sullivan is hoping Oliver Beer can put himself on the path to a Cup quadrella by his performance at Victoria Park on Saturday.

The former Victorian galloper steps out for the first time in five weeks in this weekend’s RAH Development Appeal Trophy (1400m) as a lead-up to the Balaklava, Baker Young Stockbrokers, Barossa and Murray Bridge Gold Cups.

The veteran galloper hasn’t raced since a game fourth in the rich Winter Championship at Flemington early July, but has been kept up to the mark with a solid hit-out in a 1000 trial at Morphettville on Monday.

"His recent form has been excellent and the way these races are set up now fits his program perfectly," O’Sullivan said.

"He had 10 days in the paddock after his Winter Championship run and had a good blow after his trial."

The Balaklava Cup, worth $71,000 and run over a mile on Wednesday, August 28, is now the first of four mile Cups within a month. The second, the $40,000 Listed Baker Young Stockbrokers Trophy, is at Morphettville on Saturday September 7.

The $30,000 Wolf Blass Barossa Cup is next at Gawler on Sunday September 22 while the Murray Bridge Gold Cup, a Listed race worth $60,000, is on Saturday September 28 – AFL Grand Final day. The distance of that race has been reduced from 2400m to the mile to complete the four-race series.

O’Sullivan’s local numbers have been reduced in recent weeks with many of his team now prepared by Richard Jolly, who has taken up the role of Aquanita’s Adelaide trainer. O’Sullivan begins as the stable’s Caulfield trainer on September 1, where he has 24 boxes to fill.

He will be taking a select few horses with him to Victoria and hopes to build up his team.

"I have a few earmarked to go to Melbourne but basically I’ll have to do some recruiting to build up the team," O’Sullivan said.

"It won’t be easy but Aquanita give you plenty of support."

One of his team who may make it to Melbourne eventually is Miss Moss Rose, who makes her debut at Victoria Park on Saturday.

She is owned by Nick Moraitis, who sent the Filante filly to O’Sullivan for his part in the 2001 Adelaide Cup win of Apache King.

"Apache King stayed at my stables during his Cup campaign and Nick promised me a horse after he won the Cup," O’Sullivan said.

"Although I’m not expecting too much on Saturday, I’ve been impressed with her. She ran on strongly in a recent trial at Murray Bridge and I think she’ll make the grade, but she’ll probably need time and more ground."

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Out 4 metres entire circuit.

RACE 1 – AMCOR AUSTRALASIA - 1600 metres (Outer)

PETITE ETOILE (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly and brushed the outside gate.

ELAVION (D. Tootell) jumped away awkwardly.

Correct Weight was delayed in being semaphored for this race to allow M. Neilson, the rider of MCBEAL, and Mr. A. McEvoy, the trainer of that mare, to view the official head-on video of the race. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

M. Neilson, the rider of MCBEAL, explained to Stewards that racing to the 200 metres he was intending to take a run between ELAVION (D. Tootell) and DHOLIMA’S DAUGHTER (D. Carney) but was unable to do so as there was insufficient room. As a result M. Neilson explained that he had to change course inwards to obtain a clear run.

N. Tomizawa, the rider of PETITE ETOILE, explained to the Stewards that his instructions were to ride the mare back in the field but racing to the 1200 metres PETITE ETOILE dropped the bit and as a result lost more ground than anticipated. He further stated that over the final 400 metres he rode the mare with the whip and it responded well to his riding and finished the race well. A veterinary inspection of PETITE ETOILE revealed that it has suffered a slight attack of respiratory thumps.

RACE 2 – TAPESTRY VINEYARDS - 1250 metres

MISS MOSS ROSE (D. Carney) was slow to begin.

J. Holder, the rider of REGAL FLUTE, reported that the filly raced greenly in the straight.

RACE 3 – THE GRANT BURGE WINES - 1800 metres (Outer)

SNIPALLAH (J. Holder) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 1200 metres CLARENDON’S CURSE (W. Kerford) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of SPINNERMAN (N. Tomizawa) and as a result shifted out and was forced to race wide for the remainder of the race.

RACE 4 – THE GLIDEROL STAYERS - 2400 metres

QUEEN MILENA jumped away awkwardly and in doing so threw its head up and struck it’s rider, D. Tootell, in the head. Subsequent to the race D. Tootell was examined by Ambulance staff who passed him fit to ride for the remainder of the day.

BELLTON (M. Neilson) was disappointed for a run approaching the winning post and had to be eased to avoid the heels of BUFFALO POWER (J. Holder) and KEY TO MY DREAMS (J. Bowditch).

RACE 5 – MCMAHON SERVICES - 1450 metres (Outer)

OIL CAN ANNIE was found to have blood in its mouth at the barrier. A veterinary examination revealed it had dislodged a tooth and the mare was passed fit to take its place in the field.

MESERE (W. Kerford) was slow to begin.

HAGGLE (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 1300 metres CAPTAIN CHRISTIE (B. Vale) shifted in and as a result SPAR (D. Carney) was taken in which resulted in NAFIR (NZ) (J. Maund) shifting in. In consequence HAGGLE (C. Lindop) brushed the running rail, became unbalanced for a short distance and lost ground. Stewards were satisfied that no one rider was responsible for the incident and no action was taken.

RACE 6 – THE RAH DEVELOPMENT APPEAL TROPHY - 1400 metres

FIREBALL (D. Tootell) and SEDONIC (G. Hoobin) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 1200 metres INKAMULLA (NZ) (M. Neilson) was tightened for room, had to be eased and lost its position due to FIREBALL (D. Tootell) shifting in and away from MORE ACTION (N. Tomizawa).

Racing to the 500 metres OLIVER BEER (NZ) (T. Creek) shifted out and MORE ACTION (N. Tomizawa) shifted in resulting in those horses bumping.

RACE 7 – ALAN SHEPPARD HOMES SPRINT - 1250 metres

STORA BOLLAR (W. Kerford) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 800 metres SIMONDE (C. Lindop) had to be eased to avoid the heels of STARBUCKS (A. Stead) and in doing so rolled in, resulting in DEDICATION BOY (C. Lever) having to be checked to avoid the heels of SIMONDE.

Racing to the 200 metres GRUMANS (J. Lyon) had to be eased and shifted outwards to avoid the heels of DANEFORCE (C. Bryant).

Racing to the 100 metres GRUMANS (J. Lyon) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of CULLEN BAY (M. Neilson) and shifted out to obtain a clear run.

RACE 8 – MOYA CAR SPOILERS - 1000 metres

RUSTY BUBBLES (W. Kerford) was very slow to begin.

The Stewards questioned J. Lyon, the rider of HERACLES, as to why he had waited to the 200 metres to commence to ride his mount out. J. Lyon explained that his instructions had been to hold the gelding up to the 200 metres but in retrospect he should have made more use of HERACLES prior to the 200 metres than he had, to establish a break on the rest of the runners. The Stewards questioned J. Murray, representing trainer, Mr. J. Hall, and he confirmed the Stewards’ observations and J. Lyon’s explanation was noted.
