CULLEN BAY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4: SIR LAURENCE HANDICAP, 1000 metres

When questioned regarding his riding of ROMILADA in the early stages of the event and in the straight, Apprentice M Neilson explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding off the pace. He stated that ROMILADA had jumped well and he not dug the mount up in an attempt to fulfil his instructions. He added the pace of the race had been quick and his mount had not travelled as well as he expected, however, inside the 600 metres he had commenced to ride ROMILADA and it had responded to his riding.

M Neilson further explained that in the vicinity of the 200 metres he had attempted to angle for a run which was available between COURT HERO (NZ) (M Pegus) and CATANGO (C Bryant), however, shortly after committing to the run CATANGO (C Bryant) had rolled out marginally, resulting in ROMILADA being reluctant to accept the run and shifting out onto the heels of COURT HERO and becoming unbalanced. He advised Stewards that he not considered the run, which had been available inside CATANGO, as his mount had been inclined to lay out away from his whip. After considering all matters Stewards advised M Neilson, and his Master Mr B Dunn, that whilst no action was considered on this occasion, in future he would be required to take better options at critical stages of races.

ROMILADA was examined by the Clubs Veterinary Surgeon and was found to be lame in the off fore leg and slight soreness in the offside wither.

J Holder the rider of GUCCI GURU (NZ) explained that in contrast to its previous start where it raced forward and settled in running, GUCCI GURU had been inclined to be ungenerous. He stated that approaching the 400 metres he was held up when obliged to wait for RED LABELLE to improve to his outside, and thereafter his mount had raced greenly when placed under pressure.

GUCCI GURU (NZ) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported lacerations to the both sides of its mouth. Mr L Macdonald, Trainer of GUCCI GURU, was advised the filly would be subjected to a pre-race examination at its next start.

r1tonymcevoy.jpg (10494 bytes)Tony McEvoy has made the best possible start to what is tipped to be a big day out at the Balaklava Cup Day meeting in South Australia today.

Chapel Royal and Prosperous Bid, his only two runners in the first of eight races, filled the first and second placings.

Owned by the Sangster family’s Swettenham Stud Syndicate, Chapel Royal was having just her second race start.

On debut the daughter of the former Collingrove shuttler Revoque ran a handy fifth at Gawler, one of South Australia’s tightest and trickiest circuits.

Today back out to a more spacious track the filly and Simon Price showed a clean set of heels to set up a big break in the straight and then comfortably hold out her stablemate Prosperous Bid.

Chapel Royale is out of the Rory’s Jester mare Marillion and carried the familiar green, blue and white colours to victory.

McEvoy has leading chances in each of the eight races today, including the feature, the listed Balaklava Cup over 1600 metres later in the afternoon.

Leading Queensland jockey Stathi Katsidis will ride for the first time in South Australia on Wednesday when he teams up with powerful trainer Tony McEvoy in Wednesday's listed Balaklava Cup.

Katsidis has picked up rides in six of the eight races on Wednesday, all for the ever powerful Lindsay Park stables.

The talented hoop will partner the last start city race runner-up McBeal in the feature event, the listed $71,000 Price's Bakery/Malaysia Airlines Balaklava Cup (1600m).

McBeal, who is being aimed toward the Group One Caulfield Cup, has drawn barrier 14 in the field of 16.

As usual the Balaklava Cup has attracted a top class field including proven performers Border Time, Inkamulla, Old Man, Oliver Beer, Currency Rep, None For The Road, Questamatic, Aviate, Terminus Prince and the lightweight hope from Lindsay Park, Mustaagel.

The Cup will be run at 3.20pm (local time), with the first of eight races jumping at 12.22pm (12.52pm EST).

Six Winners for Mighty McEvoy

r3tonymcevoy.jpg (9733 bytes)Lindsay Park’s head trainer Tony McEvoy dominated today’s Balaklava Cup meeting in South Australia by training six of the eight winners.

Known for their dominance at the track which is about an hour north of Adelaide, McEvoy was able to equal the Lindsay Park record for the number of winners at a Balaklava meeting.

Today was also the biggest day for McEvoy since he took over the reins as the head trainer at Lindsay Park about 18 months ago.

The day could not have started in better shape for McEvoy as he saddled up the first five winners on the card. Winner number six came in the last of eight events.

The Danehill three-year-old Zibellino wrapped up the huge day for McEvoy when he showed plenty of fight to score in great style.

"It’s been a very exciting day," McEvoy said after winner number six.

McEvoy said it was unfortunate he couldn’t win the feature event, but things just didn’t go with him in the big race.

""My horses didn’t have any luck in the Cup," McEvoy said. "Had McBeal actually been ridden for luck back on the inside she would have bolted in."

He said that one of today’s winners, Hawk Eye, had impressed in his second consecutive win and he was ready to face tougher class.

"He’ll be running in Adelaide or Melbourne soon and he will be given his chance in better races."

"Earlier in his career he was actually an early favourite for the Sydney Cup," he added. "But since then he has had a couple of tendon injuries."

The leading trainer added that he also had a big wrap on one of his beaten runners at today’s Balaklava meeting.

"Although he didn’t win today I have a good opinion of Mount Zaskar," McEvoy said. "He’s got some good wins in him, that’s for sure."

McEvoy also added that the effort of the previously unbeaten Pompous in his return at Moonee Valley had impressed him.

"He had a lot of pressure after being off the scene a long time," McEvoy said. "The run was super and just near the end his condition gave out and then he was cleaned up near the line."

Chading Wins Balaklava Cup By a Breath

Chading has made it three consecutive wins and scored the most thrilling of wins when an all the way victor in this afternoon’s listed Price’s Bakery/Malaysia Airlines Balaklava Cup (1600m).

Sent to the front early by popular South Australian jockey Wayne Kerford, Chading looked the winner before the Mark Kavanagh trained Border Time lunged right on the line.

After what seemed an eternity the judge posted the winning number much to the delight of Chading’s trainer Joe Hall and well known businessman, breeder and owner Ian Barton.

A four-year-old by Marauding, Chading won his third consecutive race after back to back wins at Balaklava and Victoria Park.

While his previous two starts had been by three and three and a half lengths respectively, today’s margin was less than half a centimetre.

While the majority felt that Chading had hung on to win in a thrilling photo, winning jockey Wayne Kerford had his fingers crossed as he returned to scale.

"A stride after the line I knew he (Border Time) was in front. So I was just hoping I’d hung on," Kerford said.

"Sometimes it favours the outside (horse) here so I wasn’t overly confident I’d won," he added.

Winning trainer Joe Hall wasn’t on track today, laid up with a leg injury at home after a stint in hospital for an operation.

"He hasn’t had much luck lately with his knee and he’s just out of hospital," Kerford added. "I hope it’s a good tonic."

It was nearly back to back Cups for Morphettville based trainer Mark Kavanagh. Border Time was hoping to follow in the footsteps of stablemate Easy Landing who’d won the Cup in a photo finish last year.

In a blanket finish just 2.7 lengths separated the first thirteen placegetters in the field if sixteen.

The Balaklava Cup ended a dream run being experienced at the meeting by Lindsay Park’s head trainer Tony McEvoy.

McEvoy had saddled up the previous five winners, but his three representatives in the feature event all finished out of a place.

Danish Storm, the most fancied of his trio, blew the start by rearing and then having to show strong early pace to take up a position by the second pick McBeal had no luck after racing back in the field and shunted to the extreme outside of the field on the corner.

What a month it is for country and provincial racing in South Australia, with the running of four cups and a transferred Mount Gambier meeting run on Fathers Day at Murray Bridge.

SEPTEMBER 1 - With the track upgrade occurring at Mount Gambier, the scheduled race meeting for the 1st of September will now be conducted at Murray Bridge. The Racing Club has sought sponsorship from two major meat companies in the region, T & R Pastoral and Big River Pork (through Chapman's) to supply the meat for the Fathers Day Luncheon.

SEPTEMBER 8 - The Year of the Outback Race Weekend will occur on September 7 & 8 throughout Australia. To celebrate the Year of the Outback, the Bardrill Mindarie-Halidon Cup, which is usually run a week later, is now scheduled for Sunday 8th September, 2002.

In keeping with the outback theme, the racing club has arranged for the extremely talented 'Old Gum Tree-O Bush Band' to entertain the crowd, who as a rule, flock to the country course from all areas of the state. As an added incentive to trainers, Ian Barton from Bardrill has offered a $10,000 bonus to the first trainer who trains 3 winners on the day and a $20,000 bonus to the first to train 4 winners.

SEPTEMBER 11 - September 11 will remain in our memory for years after the terrorist attacks in America. Numerous heroes were identified during this time of crisis, none more than the men and women of the Emergency Services.

The Finniss Lodge Strathalbyn Cup this year falls on the anniversary of September 11. The Strathalbyn Racing Club has decided to dedicate the day to our own emergency services. Free beer, wine and soft drinks will be provided to any Police, Firemen, Ambulance Officers, Nurses and S.E.S who attend on the day. Teams from each service will also be invited to participate in a Charity Tug of War with $1,000 in prize-money.

Strathalbyn is also celebrating its' 80th anniversary in conjunction with the 'Smith Family' Charity. The club has donated naming rights to a race to the charity and $1.00 from every full paying customer will also go to the charity's 'Learning for Life' Program.

SEPTEMBER 22 - Fine food and Berringer Blass Wines will again be on offer on Sunday September 22 at the Gawler Racecourse with the running of the Barossa Cup. This years' crowd is expected to overtake last years' attendance of almost 2000 people. There is a vast array of entertainment for the kids, with a special 'kids world' area and live kids band 'Chalk Music'. For the adults, a food and wine court and live music will entertain between races, and the ever reliable John Letts will be there running the Punters' Club.

SEPTEMBER 28 - The $60,000 Finniss Lodge/Alcohol Go-Easy Murray Bridge Gold Cup, run on AFL Grand Final Day, is a highlight of the racing calendar. Race-goers and football enthusiasts head to the picturesque Murray Bridge racecourse to have the best of both worlds. They get to watch the AFL Grand Final on the Clipsal Super Screen at the same time as enjoying the atmosphere and thrill of horses thundering down the straight.
