0907tonymcevoy.jpg (10523 bytes)Top trainer Tony McEvoy hopes to keep Saturday's $50,000 Listed Lindsay Park Guineas "in the family".

The stable has won three of the last five runnings, including last years with Liberty Rose. This year the stable has four promising entries - Anacarde, Milanova, La Supreme and Lifelong Dream.

"It's a very important race for the fillies because most of them get over a bit of ground for the first time and it gives them the opportunity for black-type status," McEvoy said.

"Hopefully the stable can win another one.

"Anacarde was very disappointing last start and I'm at a loss to explain the run. Her previous run was excellent and I'll be going on that."

"Milanova is a nice filly with superb breeding and comes into the race along a very similar path as Liberty Rose last year. "

"La Supreme finished fourth at Morphettville last Saturday but I felt she should have won. Although she's a maiden, had she won that race we would have had no hesitation running her in this," he added.

"Lifelong Dream was another who was unlucky last start and although she's up in class I think she's good enough."

Promising young South Australian rider Chris Bryant guided Clarendon’s Curse to a popular hometown win in this afternoon’s Finniss Lodge Strathalbyn Cup (2050m) in South Australia.

Well ridden throughout the event, the Mick Whittle trained son of Brief Truce pounced on the early leader Rusty Dusty Grey before drawing clear for a comprehensive victory in the feature event.

Today was Clarendon’s Curse’s second consecutive win after his last start city success at Victoria Park when successful over 1800 metres again for Chris Bryant.

The ghostly grey Rusty Dusty Grey clinged on to grab second place ahead of the fast finishing Outside the Square.

A five-year-old chestnut gelding, Clarendon’s Curse has now started on 32 occasions for seven wins, four seconds and fourth thirds for stakes earnings of over $75,000.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day a probable Oakbank runner of the future was found when the Merri Glatz trained Classic Coup scored a great win in the Hurdle at Strathalbyn.

Merri is the trainer wife of Oakbank’s President John Glatz, and the gelding who placed on the flat to Hawkeye last start is raced by John and Merri and their children Lucy and Ben.

Brave Decision then went on to complete a hat-trick of wins, capping it off with his win in the Darwin Cup.

For his deeds in the Northern Territory, Brave Decision was awarded the Darwin Turf Club's Club Horse of the Month, the Stayer and Middle Distance Horse of the Year and the Carlton Draught Champion Horse of the Year.

Stokes' Winning Run Continues

0907squillani.jpg (13591 bytes)Talented Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes has continued his winning form from Flemington on Saturday with an impressive winner at Strathalbyn this afternoon.

On Saturday Stokes, who is based at Adelaide’s number one track Morphettville, cheered home Squillani as he showed plenty of fight to lead throughout in the listed Teac Digital Stakes over 1400 metres.

While Squillani is bound for more feature events over the upcoming Melbourne Spring Carnival, today Stokes was pinning his faith on the Kingston Mill mare Bold Reef.

With a blistering start Bold Reef went straight to the front for Jason "Grasshopper" Lyon and zoomed clear before being issued with a challenge shortly after straightening.

But after a few urgings from Lyon the mare, who was first up today, responded to hold out Cozarvy, while Golden Delicious’ sister Barossa Can Can was third.

r4squillani2.jpg (13975 bytes)Bold Reef carried the familiar white and green colours to victory, the same silks worn by Danny Nikolic on Saturday when he led throughout aboard Squillani.

A son of Shagny, Squillani will now be tested up against some of the country’s best after his hard fought effort at Flemington.

Squillani only made it into the field after a scratching prior to Saturday after the grey galloper was originally originally installed as the first emergency.

"We came over during the week not knowing we had a run," Stokes said of his successful hit-run trip to Melbourne. "Luckily we got a start and the rest is now history."

Stokes is renowned during his short training career as one of South Australia’s most astute trainers and he is one of the better placers of horses.

The Murray Bridge Racing Club is pleased to announce the appointment of B Racing Management to undertake the management of their Club operations following the resignation of Brian Wellington. B Racing Management also provides a similar service to the Strathalbyn Racing Club.

"The appointment of the same company provides a good opportunity for both Clubs to work collaboratively in ensuring the continued growth of thoroughbred racing in the region" Bryan Guy, Chairman of Murray Bridge said.

"We are looking forward to a closer working relationship with the Strathalbyn Racing Club and believe the benefits to both Clubs are exceptional".

B Racing Management was established earlier this year when Chris Biggs and Nick Bawden were appointed to perform the Secretary/Manager's role at Strathalbyn Racing Club when Chris's brother Barry announced his retirement after 24 years of service to the Club.

"In many ways the shared initiatives will provide the incentive for both Clubs to prosper, given that between them they provide the largest training base outside of Metropolitan Adelaide" Chris Biggs said.

"It provides the opportunity to pool ideas and resources to achieve a critical mass, with the possibility of regional management procedures to be adopted".

To ensure the success of the operation B Racing Management recently announced the appointment of Tim Clements to the team.

"It is good to see 2 young people accepting the challenge of racing administration, since they represent the future of the thoroughbred racing industry. It is an exciting period that the industry is going through and they will bring a new meaning to the management of Racing Clubs." Chris Biggs said. "Both Nick and Tim will provide the front-line focus for both Strathalbyn and Murray Bridge Racing Clubs".

"Chris Biggs also provides the management role as Executive Officer for the South Australian Racing Clubs' Council and it is the first step for a bright future for both Clubs" John Cameron, Chief Executive officer, Thoroughbred Racing South Australia said.

Jolly Patient With Adelaide Pair

Morphettville trainer David Jolly remains undecided whether to run promising gelding Phyll The Flyer at Morphettville either tomorrow or Saturday.

The four-year-old is entered for tomorrow’s Harvey Norman Class 4 Handicap (1100m) and is a late nomination at headquarters for a 1050m event on Saturday.

Phyll The Flyer was heavily backed on debut at Murray Bridge late last month on the strength of a trial win at Morphettville.

After missing the start, the gelding quickly gathered speed and, despite racing greenly around the turn, strode away for a comfortable win.

"He’s still got a lot to learn but he’s a pretty promising type," Jolly said. "It’s hard to go from a maiden to a Class 4 or city race but he’s not overly big and I think it’s better he take on the tougher race with a light weight."

Jolly has been extremely patient with Phyll The Flyer, delaying his debut until he had had time to mature.

"He’s been in and out of work a number of times because he’s been immature," Jolly said. "We didn’t really want to rush him and I think the owners have been rewarded by his belated debut. He’s a stout little thing and I think he’ll develop into a handy sprinter."

Meanwhile, Jolly is also being patient with Goodwood Handicap winner Zip Zip Aray, who won’t make his spring debut until the $250,000 Group 2 National Telecoms Group Sprint (1100m) at Caulfield on Caulfield Cup day, October 19.

Jolly reports the gelding has returned in fine order but, showing patience that belies his years, doesn’t want to rush him back into racing.

"Like Phyll The Flyer, Zip Zip Aray has also been an immature type and I’m in no hurry to rush him back," Jolly said. "We considered races like the Vic Health Cup because I’ve no doubt he’ll make a 1400m horse but after the carnival here in May I wanted to give him a decent break.

"He’ll return first-up in the Group Sprint on Caulfield Cup day and then go to the Group 1 Salinger Stakes at Flemington on Derby day. I think it’s a better program for him and we’ll have plenty to look forward to in the autumn."

Zip Zip Aray, owned and bred by South Australian hoteliers Wayne and Jenny Francis, has started twice on straight tracks for a win and an excellent fourth in the Listed KMPG Stakes in April.

"The Salinger is a tough 1200m and probably suits 1400m run-on type horses better," Jolly said. "That’s what he’s looking for and he’ll be nice and fresh. We threw him in the deep end last time in and he swam, but this is another level. He’s a lovely galloper, though, and I think he’s up to it."

Zip Zip Aray had his first hit-out at Balaklava on Cup day in an exhibition gallop over 1000m. He will have another run over the same trip at the barrier trials at Victoria Park next Monday. It’s always a popular morning, as the new seasons two-year-olds hit the track for the first time.

Promising young Adelaide three-year-old Kelmark will undergo surgery and then be immediately spelled after is was revealed he'd broken down after his weekend run.

The gelding's trainer Stuart Gower reported to Adelaide stewards late yesterday that Kelmark would need to be operated on after a veterinary examination revealed a bone chip in the off fore knee.

Kelmark started the favourite in Saturday's Haigh's Chocolates Handicap at Morphettville and finished last behind the promising filly We Will Rock You.

Before Saturday the son of Keltrice was an impressive last start winner at Cheltenham, and two runs earlier he was a strong winner at Mildura.

So far from just six starts the gelding has netted his connections $32,780.
