Glatz Preparing Classic Oakbank Coup

Oakbank 2003. It maybe over six months away, but it is already on the mind of one of the locals Merri Glatz.

Tomorrow in Adelaide Glatz will saddle up one of the state's more promising jumpers Classic Coup in the Bonnett's Saddlery Hurdle (3036m).

A former New Zealander, Classic Coup joined the Glatz stable at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills on the advice of champion kiwi jumps trainer John Wheeler.

And since starting her new career as a hurdler, the daughter of Classic Fame has won her only two jumping starts to date.

Classic Coup will always hold a special place with Merri. Her first winner came via the mare in her first jumps win at Strathalbyn recently.

"She was my first winner since I had a licence," she reported. "Then of course at her next start she was my first city winner."

Many people would realise the Glatz name has been around with the training of horses for many years. However, it is now the more glamorous of the pair (sorry John) who is listed as the person in charge of the team at Tantallon Stud.

"We've gone close plenty of times to winning a race with many placings, but Strathalbyn was my first with Classic Coup," Merri added.

John was in charge of the stable until he took up a role as a Director of Thoroughbred Racing South Australia (TRSA). As well John's active participation in the local industry sees him as a committee member of the South Australian Racing Clubs Council.

Merri realises the Oakbank Carnival is still many months away, but already she is dreaming of pulling off her own classic coup at the famous jumping spectacular.

"Obviously with our level of involvement with the club I'd really love to be able to win a race there over the carnival," she said.

"It's still a long way off, but it will come around soon enough, that's for sure."

Gunning for three consecutive wins Classic Coup is expected to be one of the horses to beat in tomorrow's first event in Adelaide.

"I'd be thinking she should run in the first two on Saturday," Merri predicted. "Eric (Musgrove) has a good horse in the race and that will probably be the one we have to beat."

Webb and Gatt Join Forces in Adelaide

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/27702--sp-1422465643.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Jockey Matthew Gatt is hoping to continue his successful association with Adelaide when he partners six horses for Cranbourne trainer... size=small}
Jockey Matthew Gatt is hoping to continue his successful association with Adelaide when he partners six horses for Cranbourne trainer Stuart Webb at Cheltenham Park tomorrow.

Gatt has won a number of Group races in South Australia including his first – and only – Group 1 success aboard Blue Murder in the 2000 SA Derby for Cliff Brown.

Gatt moved to Brisbane earlier this year and continued on after their winter carnival but he recently returned to his old stamping ground at Cranbourne and linked up with Webb.

"I did my apprenticeship at Cranbourne with Colin Alderson and based myself there as a senior but moved to Brisbane for the carnival this year," Gatt said. "I ended up staying a lot longer than expected but recently decided to re-establish myself in Victoria again. I ride a lot of work for Stuart and he offered me a number of rides in Adelaide. I have fond memories there and hope I can continue on the success."

Webb has runners in six of the seven flat races and gives chances to them all. Lochi, in the Terrific @ Manner Lodge Handicap, has been stabled in Adelaide with David Jolly for the last month but the other five arrived early Friday morning. Webb has been a regular visitor to Adelaide and won the Group 3 Carlton Draught Stakes with Firetaine during the Adelaide Cup carnival.

"It’s just so tough in Victoria at the moment and you are flat out getting a run in many cases," Webb said. "A lot of these horses were entered for events over the next week but there seemed to be a number of suitable races in Adelaide so I loaded up the track and brought Matt with me."

Webb rates his best chances as Kosta’s Delight, Lochi and Bagatrix. He also has Wisttrakowe in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1822m) but concedes it will be a tough race.

"Kosta’s Delight just bowls along and, if there’s no speed in the race, he’ll take running down," Webb said. "Lochi has been there for a while now and has been given an easy time on the track since finishing third behind the dead-heaters Clarendon’s Curse and Jasper Ruler at Victoria Park. My only concern with him is coming back to 2000m."

Webb said his best chance of the day was in the last – Bagatrix – but, as the name suggests, he must be taken on trust.

"He is a real rogue and was named because of it," Webb said. "He’s a very talented horse but does everything wrong. At his best he’d just about win but he always finds trouble."

Web said he would leave a few of his team with David Jolly, who has stables at Morphettville, for the next few weeks and look for more suitable local races.

Hard Work Holds Andrew in Good Stead

Promising Apprentice Andrew Stead could be in for a big long-weekend with a number of good rides spread across three meetings.

Stead has been a little quiet lately but, as the numbers grow in his master’s stable, so to will his opportunities over the next few months.

Stead is indentured to leading Morphettville trainer David Balfour and his recent hard work has been rewarded with a couple of excellent stable rides.

"Andrew is going along well and is a pretty hard working lad," Balfour said. "He doesn’t do much wrong but his opportunities have been limited lately because most of my team have been in the paddock. I’ve got a lot more runners in work now, though, and he’ll get plenty of rides over the next few months."

The lead-up work Stead has poured into Made Of Gold filly Gold Emerald has paid dividends, being rewarded with her debut ride at Cheltenham Park tomorrow. The filly showed good speed in winning a trial at Victoria Park in early September.

"She’s only a little pony but she’s very quick," Balfour said. "She’s just a jump and run type but Andrew’s (3kg) claim will certainly help. He’s ridden her in all her work and won on her in the trial so he deserves the ride tomorrow."

Another plum stable mount for Stead is on Monday at Morphettville. He will ride Lawson’s Storm, who won impressively at the track last start.

"Lawson’s Storm showed plenty of ability last time in but did plenty of things wrong," Balfour said.

"He’s settled right down now he’s been gelded and he’ll continue to improve. His mother, Poet’s Breeze, was an absolute flying machine but I think he’ll get up to a mile. He got back and worked home well last start and the form from the race is good. The claim certainly helps and he should run well again."

Along with his mounts at Cheltenham Park and Morphettville, Stead has four good rides, including Illustrious Ruler and Beadman, at Port Lincoln on Sunday.

Richard Will Be Jolly is Blue Wins

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/11344--sp-918604784.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Aquanita trainer Richard Jolly is confident honest filly Bluewin can break her maiden status in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Hill Smith... size=small}
Aquanita trainer Richard Jolly is confident honest filly Bluewin can break her maiden status in Saturday’s $50,000 Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1822m) at Cheltenham Park.

Bluewin has had four placings from seven starts but hasn’t shown her best until Jolly started to step her up over a bit of ground. She has been bursting to win a race and was unlucky not to have finished closer last start in the Lindsay Park Guineas (1600m), finishing third behind Milanova.

"She ran a fantastic race under the circumstances," Jolly said. "She had taken just two strides out of the gates before knuckling over and going down on her nose. She ended up with the tailenders and out wide, but still ran home strongly to finish third."

Bluewin has already had six starts this campaign and a decision on whether to send her to the paddock hinged on her run last start. But, according to Jolly, she has done so well since he felt there was no reason not to run her this weekend.

"She pulled up great after her last start and has been bouncing off the track," Jolly said. "She has only improved as she’s stepped up in trip and this race gives her the opportunity at black type. A lot of her opposition will be a bit suspect at the distance but she sticks on really well. She’s a very tough filly."

After stumbling out the gates last start, the filly had to be ridden upside down but, with the rail out 5m this weekend, she will hold a more forward position.

"Two starts ago she led and the start before she box seated, so she’ll be a lot closer this time," Jolly said. "I don’t think you’d want to be coming from too far back with the rail out five metres."

After Saturday, Jolly will again assess whether to send the filly to the paddock or save her for another run.

"If she were to win and pull up well, she may have another run," Jolly said. "There’s not a lot locally but there is a 2000m race for fillies in Melbourne in a couple of weeks. We’ll make a decision on how she goes on Saturday. The main aim for her is the Oaks here next year. I think she’ll be a better horse in the autumn and she’s always given the impression she’ll need a bit of ground."

Lindsay Park trainer Tony McEvoy is sure to play a hand in the race with four chances – Mount Kosciusko, Anacarde, Lifelong Dream and La Supreme.

Mount Kosciusko is a striking Zabeel gelding who has been very green at both runs back from a spell. He should appreciate Saturday’s 1822m though.

Anacarde, an Anabaa filly, has been disappointing since winning at Victoria Park three starts ago but may appreciate the extra trip, while Lifelong Dream, a Jeune filly, belied her odds of 100/1 in charging home to finish second to Milanova in the Listed Lindsay Park Guineas last start.

The stables final runner, and probably their best chance, is La Supreme. The Danehill filly drew barrier 14 last start in the Lindsay Park Guineas and worked home strongly to finish fifth. She has drawn much better this weekend in barrier five and will appreciate the extra ground.

Jolly has two other runners at Cheltenham Park on Saturday – both with excellent chances as well.

Tawtrice, in the Bonnett’s Saddlery Hurdle, was sent out a short-priced favourite for his hurdle debut at Victoria Park a fortnight ago but could manage just fourth. Jolly is tipping a better performance this weekend.

"It was his first start in a hurdle and he made a few mistakes," Jolly said. "He will have improved from that and I’d be disappointed if he didn’t run much better."

His other runner, Miss Vodka, is backing up after an easy win at Murray Bride last Saturday.

She led all the way over 1200m and never looked like being headed. She steps back up in distance this weekend to 1466m but was beaten just a head over a similar trip at the track three starts ago.

"She pulled up really well from last Saturday and this looked another suitable race," Jolly said. "She is pretty well in after Matthew Neilson’s (3kg) claim and should take catching with the rail out."

Milanova Could Be the Oaks Trail Blazer

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/24723--sp-987755329.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=Blue-blooded filly Milanova is on target to rectify a Lindsay Park "anomaly" in winning the Crown VRC Oaks later this... size=small}

6milanova.jpg (13255 bytes)

Blue-blooded filly Milanova is on target to rectify a Lindsay Park "anomaly" in winning the Crown VRC Oaks later this spring.

It seems amazing but among all the trophies and premierships of the Hayes dynasty the VRC Oaks remains dubiously absent.

Head trainer Tony McEvoy is hopeful Milanova can claim the classic staying test that has eluded the stable for so long.

A $700,000 yearling purchase, Milanova would be one of the best-bred fillies in the country. She is by arguably the world’s best stallion – Danehill – from the best female line in the American studbook – a Secretariat daughter of champion race and broodmare Fanfreluche. She is closely related to top class Australian performers Flying Spur, Encosta de Lago, and French Braids.

"She is already a very valuable filly, but to add some more black type to her record is the aim," McEvoy said. "I think she will be ideally suited to a race like the Oaks. The best stayer doesn’t necessarily win; it’s the horses that can settle and have that brilliance at the finish that usually win it. She’s got that."

McEvoy gave the filly just four starts as a two-year-old. She won on debut then finished fourth in three consecutive stakes races, her last before a behind Lashed in the Sires Produce Stakes at Morphettville in May.

Second-up this time in, though, stepping up to the mile of the Listed Lindsay Park Guineas at Morphettville last month, the filly hinted at bigger things to come.

"Not many horses go into a stakes race over a mile second-up and win as well as she did," McEvoy said. "Her pedigree suggests she’ll have no trouble with the mile-and-a-quarter and further. I’ve no doubt she’ll be better over more ground and she also has a lot of scope for improvement."

The filly will take another step towards the Oaks this Saturday in the Group 2 Blazer Edward Manifold Stakes (1620m) at Flemington. The Manifold has proven a good pointer to the VRC Oaks with 14 fillies having completed the double. The Lindsay Park stable hasn’t won the race since 1987, with Midnight Fever.

"She pulled up really well after her second-up run and went to Flemington very early to settle in, which she’s done. Now she just has to take the next step."

Meanwhile, Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes will prove a pivotal race for the ultra-consistent Fields Of Omagh.

He will carry 59kg in the set weights and penalties Group 2 test and meets the likes of Northerly on level weight terms.

"This is as good a race as you’ll find this spring," McEvoy said. "He is going great but this is his toughest test."

If Fields Of Omagh is able to win, though, it will leave McEvoy with a happy conundrum as to where to run next. The gelding has been handicapped with 53.5kg for the Caulfield Cup and will drop 5.5kg for that event. The Cox Plate, though, at weight-for-age, is the other option.

"If he can match it with horses like Northerly with that weight, then he’ll be very hard to beat in the Caulfield Cup," McEvoy said. "But, if he’s going that well, maybe the Cox Plate is an option. It would be a pleasant dilemma to be in."
