Improving stayer Moongara will give trainer Mark Kavanagh a better guide to his Port Adelaide Cup chances with his effort in Saturday's $40,000 Listed Top Cut Stakes (2000m) at Morphettville.

Moongara is a winner of his last two starts at Morphettville but tackles not only Listed but open company for the first time on Saturday.

The lightly-raced five-year-old is making up for lost time now though, after being touted as a Derby prospect in his three-year-old season before an injury forced a long lay-off.

"He has always given the indication he would make a stayer and was all set for a Derby campaign before going sore," Kavanagh said.

"He had a long lay-off and then I brought him back for a short campaign before giving him another spell. This is his serious campaign and, after two runs over unsuitable distances he has won his last two starts well.

"This is his test, though. He's still a Class 6 horse and has never even raced in open company, so we will get a better guide to his Port Cup chances this weekend."

Talented apprentice Matthew Neilson has ridden Moongara at his last two starts, the latest over 2019m at Morphettville last Saturday. Sent out a short-price favourite, the gelding didn't have the easiest of runs but was still too classy for his opposition, winning by a comfortable two lengths.

"Had he had the run of the race and just arrived to win we mightn't have gone this way with him," Kavanagh said.

"But the fact he went very early, was wide for much of the race and was still able to win so easily convinced us to give him a chance in better grade. The opposition wasn't that flash, but the way he won was very impressive.

"He's a beautiful, relaxed galloper who just puts his head down, goes to sleep then shows good acceleration. He has the making of a real stayer but we'll find out how good this weekend."

Senior rider Joe Bowditch takes the reigns in the non-claiming affair and will jump from barrier three in the eight-horse race.

The winner from this event is exempt from ballot from the $60,000 Group 3 Irongate Australia Port Adelaide Cup (2400m) at Cheltenham Park on Boxing day.

Former Jockey Set for Gawler Training Debut

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/south-australia/21247--sp-185558393.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/south_australia.gif desc=South Australian racegoers will see some fresh faces at the races in the next few meetings with a number of... size=small}
South Australian racegoers will see some fresh faces at the races in the next few meetings with a number of newcomers - and all of the fairer sex.

The first, Gillian Davey, may be new to training but most would remember her as former female jockey Gillian Winkley.

Gillian makes her training debut at Gawler tomorrow with a leased filly named Pokemonster - a three-year-old in the first event - the Sunsmart Plate (1050m).

Not only does Davey train the filly, but she also rides her in trackwork and even broke her in.

"I've been involved with racing for about 15 years now," Davey said. "I started riding while I was at High School, but retired from the saddle a few years ago now and have since been married and had a child.

"I decided to get back involved in racing so I leased this filly from Daniel Clarken. I broke her in, rode her in all her work and have now got her ready to race. I'm pretty excited about seeing her run tomorrow and if she could place, I would be just stoked."

Davey said Pokemonster would have a couple of runs this time in, before another spell. She added the filly, by Al Khawaaneeg, would be much better over ground and would return for the autumn.

A new addition to the jockeys' ranks is Kayla Stra, who rides the John Letts-trained Jester's Edge in tomorrow's Mitre 10 Class 5 Handicap at Gawler tomorrow.

Kayla, who has only recently been granted her license to ride, made her debut in the saddle at Clare on Sunday but, unfortunately, finished last aboard her mount, Set Of Bells.

Kayla, just 17, has a wealth of racing experience behind her, having grown up around horses and riding her first pony at eight.

"As a little girl I loved horses and had lessons at pony club," Stra said. "I grew up at Aldinga and worked for a horse trainer, Ray Moore, riding trackwork and I even broke some in."

Kayla is indentured to veteran Morphettville trainer Pat Barns.

Another new face soon to be seen among the local jockeys is Briony Dunn. She is the daughter of Strathalbyn trainer Barry and sister of international jockey Dwayne.

Briony was to have had her first ride at Naracoorte on Thursday but, unfortunately, the race in which she was booked to ride was deleted at acceptance. She will have to wait a little longer. Briony is indentured to Richard Jolly at Morphettville.

The 19-year-old has a lot of experience for an apprentice, working for Lindsay Park for the last four years - three at Angaston and the last year at Flemington as a track rider.

Yet another new face appearing in the next month or so will be Nicole Stone who is indentured to Stuart Gower at Morphettville.

It took a horrific car accident and a lot of time to think before Nicole decided to join the TAFE School and become a jockey, and she has now finished her race trials and is waiting to be granted her license.

r4bfenech.jpg (9609 bytes)Stewards today completed an inquiry into the reason for B. Fenech being dislodged from WE WILL ROCK YOU, near the 1200 metres, in the Lindsay Park Guineas at Morphettville on Saturday 14th September 2002.

After taking evidence from Jockeys B. Fenech (WE WILL ROCK YOU), W. Kerford (MISS VODKA), J. Bowditch (RED LABELLE) and T. Creek (PURPLE ROAD), Stewards found that MISS VODKA shifted in slightly at the same time as WE WILL ROCK YOU improved into a position on the inside of MISS VODKA, resulting in WE WILL ROCK YOU contacting the heels of MISS VODKA, stumbling and dislodging B. Fenech.

Stewards deemed the incident to be accidental and as a result no action was taken against any one rider.

South Eastern Clubs Link Together for Future Success

Race Clubs in the state's South-east have undergone some positive changes recently to propel them into new areas of growth and raceday successes.

The five south-east clubs - Mount Gambier, Naracoorte, Penola, Bordertown and Millicent - will work together under the Limestone Coast Thoroughbred Racing banner. To help them achieve their goals, they have employed a Business Development Manager - Mark Fullford - who brings a wealth of racing and administration knowledge to the area.

Each Club retains its own identity but will work together with the Business Development Manager who will concentrate on branding, sponsorship and growing raceday attendances.

Martin Miles, Chairman of the Bordertown Racing Club, said the move was a positive step forward.

"The plan is for all clubs in the area to unite and work together and, along with a Business Development Manager, grow the core business," Miles said.

"Mark will work with existing sponsors, create new sponsors both locally and corporate, develop branding in the area, work with local government and tourism offices and liaise with Thoroughbred Racing SA in Adelaide. This will also allow the respective secretaries of each club to concentrate more on their raceday activities.

"I think creating this position is a very positive step and will help the Clubs grow their businesses into the future."

Fullford has worked for many years in New Zealand at both Club and Administration levels, such as Marketing Manager at the Wellington Racing Club, General Manager of the Wanganui Jockey Club and most recently General Manager of Crown Gaming Concepts.

"Mark comes to us with a wealth of experience in the areas we require," Miles said.

"He has a lot of experience with both Clubs and Administration, and was the Private Secretary to former New Zealand Racing Minister John Falloon. He has been very successful at the Clubs he's been involved with, especially in the areas of sponsorship and growing raceday attendances."

Limestone Coast Thoroughbred Racing hopes to grow district branding for the racing product in the area, and become more involved with the successful Limestone Coast Tourism organization.
"We were very keen to get someone here to work with all the Clubs to develop our local product," Miles said.

"We want to be more involved in Tourism and other events in the area. We would also like to target more women and children to attending the races, and in the future will be looking at reciprocal rights for members to all the clubs in the area."

Fullford is one of four Business Development Managers in South Australia, whose positions were created to develop the racing industry through the growth in regional raceday events, on-course quality standards, sponsorship and hospitality packaging.

"We will continue to look for the right people to grow the racing industry in South Australia," Thoroughbred Racing SA Chief Executive John Cameron said.

"The Clubs have the opportunity to utilise the skills of the Business Development Managers in their area by growing their themed events and racedays, and we are fortunate to have someone with as much experience and knowledge as Mark in our industry."

Fullford will live in the South-east and hopes to begin his position in mid-December - perhaps in time for Bordertown Cup day on December 15.

RACE 1 : CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP - 1514 metres

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow D. Tootell, the rider of CLASSICAL ROCK, to view the official video film in the vicinity of the 400 metres. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

RACHAEL’S PRIDE (A. Stead) jumped away awkwardly.

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres, whilst being restrained, TENNESSEE ROYAL (S. Price) got its head up and became ungenerous.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres TENNESSEE ROYAL (S. Price), whilst being steadied off the heels of FINNISS D’OR (J. Holder), got its head up and raced ungenerously.

Approaching the 200 metres CLASSICAL ROCK (D. Tootell) was disappointed when attempting a tight run between INUIT (Darren Holland), which rolled in marginally, and RACHAEL’S PRIDE (A. Stead), which shifted out. CLASSICAL ROCK (D. Tootell) was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of A. Stead.

Near the 200 metres FINNISS D’OR (J. Holder) became held up momentarily when attempting to improve inside NANCY ELEANOR (J. Bowditch), which rolled in.

S. Price, the rider of TENNESSEE ROYAL, reported his mount got its tongue over the bit during the race. TENNESSEE ROYAL was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2 : THE BANGER SISTERS HANDICAP - 2019 metres

Shortly after the start WILLIAM OF OZ (D. Tootell) lost its position when tightened by FOX HELIOS (T. Creek), which shifted out.

N. Wilson, the rider of LORD GRABLE, explained that his mount had travelled well in running until in the vicinity of the 500 metres where, when placed under pressure, it had failed to extend. He added that at the gelding’s previous start at Bendigo it had disappointed him over the concluding stages, however, he could offer no reason for its poor performance today. LORD GRABLE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was suffering suspect pharyngitis.

RACE 3 : MALAYSIA AIRLINES HANDICAP - 1600 metres

GROWING (K. Post) jumped away awkwardly.

At the entrance to the straight MIGHTY EEL (J. Holder) was obliged to steady off the heels of COZARVY (C. Lindop), which shifted out.

Approaching the 200 metres MIGHTY EEL (J. Holder) was held up for a short distance when attempting to improve inside COZARVY (C. Lindop), which was inclined to lay in.

SALLY ROSE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4 : LIZ DAVENPORT HANDICAP - 1100 metres

LA PALOMA (B. Claridge) and PAPA ROACH (J. Holder) were slow to jump.

Shortly after the start LA PALOMA (B. Claridge) was obliged to steady off the heels of NEPTUNE ISLAND (C. Lindop), which shifted in. C. Lindop was advised of her obligations when shifting ground.

Racing to the 800 metres KOOLTRICE (N. Tomizawa) was obliged to steady off the heels of SPUNKIE (M. Neilson), which shifted in.

At the entrance to the straight NEPTUNE ISLAND (C. Lindop) became awkward when being restrained after improving of its own accord inside LETA (J. Potter) where there was insufficient room.

B. Claridge, the rider of LA PALOMA, explained that his mount was hesitant in jumping away and inclined to get its head up shortly afterwards, in his opinion, as a consequence of the shadow roll. Mr. D. Whitney, the trainer of LA PALOMA, explained that he had added a shadow roll to the filly in an attempt to have her race more generously, as it was his opinion that she had over-raced at her previous start. He added that he had ridden LA PALOMA in its work himself and was satisfied that she had accepted the gear, however, he intends to reconsider that decision after the filly’s performance today. Mr. Whitney advised Stewards that LA PALOMA would now be spelled. Mr. Whitney was advised that in the event he persisted with the shadow roll on LA PALOMA, Stewards would require the filly to trial to their satisfaction prior to accepting for a future event.

RACE 5 : HONDA HANDICAP - 1050 metres

CUBITON (J. Potter) jumped away awkwardly.

VARGNA (B. Claridge) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after was inconvenienced by INTREPID ASTRONAUT (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in.

Shortly after jumping away INTREPID ASTRONAUT (N. Tomizawa) shifted in onto VARGNA (B. Claridge) taking that gelding in onto HAND PASS (M. Neilson), which was shifted in onto GLENWEST (S. Price), resulting in that gelding being tightened onto CONTRIVED (C. Bryant), which was hampered and lost its position whilst being taken onto the hindquarters of VALDERRAMA (W. Kerford). N. Tomizawa was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Wednesday, 27 November and to expire at midnight on Thursday, 5 December 2002; a period of five meetings.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres ANOTHER GEM (B. Claridge) shifted in and inconvenienced KOLASE (C. Bryant).

KOLASE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg. Mr. B. Dunn, the trainer of the gelding, undertook to have a further examination of the horse on Monday, 25 November 2002, and report any abnormalities to Stewards.

RACE 7 : SCHWEPPES HANDICAP - 1200 metres

POP’S TAURUS (M. Neilson), which broke through the front of its barrier stall and galloped riderless for some distance, was withdrawn on veterinary advice at 5.12 pm.
