An impressive crowd of around 8000 people is anticipated at Morphettville Racecourse on Tuesday to celebrate Australia’s most prized racing event, the Melbourne Cup.

Morphettville promises to have all the atmosphere of Flemington and the Club are pleased to announce that pre-booked hospitality reservations have the grandstand and lawns close to capacity.

"Melbourne Cup day is understandably one of our biggest days of the year. We try to emulate what goes on at Flemington by making the day as colourful and as much fun as possible for race goers."

"As well as the nine live local races, fashion is naturally high on the day’s agenda. We have several parades taking place throughout the afternoon and of course, there is the hotly contested fashions-on-the-field competition, programmed as part of the day’s entertainment." said Steve Ploubidis the SAJC’s Chief Executive.

The Melbourne Cup, run at 2.40pm will be shown on a giant Clipsal screen, as well as on the numerous large monitors located in all public areas of the course. For those who are unsure about where to place their money there will be a Punter’s Club in operation, which will be seeking to make it three profitable Melbourne Cup days in succession for investors.

Adelaide apprentice Jason Lyon has been fined and instructed to undertake anger management counselling after a stewards inquiry at Morphettville today.

The youngster known commonly as "Grasshopper" was handed a $300 fine from the stewards panel headed by Graham Loch.

Stewards instructed the young hoop that he "is required to undertake counselling in respect of anger management."

Victorian Visitors Worth Watching in Adelaide

Geelong trainer Mark Young will bring two excellent each-way chances to Morphettville tomorrow.

Talented sprinter Prince Zalma will run in the $20,000 Honda Handicap, while prospective hurdler Alexander’s Magic will contest the staying event, the $24,000 Couran Cove Island Resort Handicap.

Prince Zalma had a consistent campaign last time in, with two wins and two fourths from four runs in before fracturing a pedal bone earlier this year. While he has fully recovered from the injury, Young believes the long break has done him the world of good.

"It wasn’t a major injury but up until then he had been a bit immature," Young said. "The extended break seems to have been a blessing in disguise. He’s come back much thicker and stronger and he’s possessed with a fair bit of talent, so I’d expect him to make a handy sprinter."

Young had been finding it difficult to find a suitable race for the gelding in Victoria, but felt tomorrow’s event looked ideal.

"He’s a good fresh horse and the big, open track at Morphettville should be perfect for him," Young said. "He’s drawn well and will take a sit off the pace. He can quicken well so I expect him to be there at the finish."

Stablemate Alexander’s Magic was purchased from New South Wales by Young with the prospect of racing as a hurdler.

He came to the stable with a maiden win from nine starts but has notched up three wins and two placings from six starts with Young. Last start, his only failure, was at Caulfield where he raced three deep throughout after drawing a wide alley and never got into a stop-start affair.

"His form has been excellent since coming down from New South Wales," Young said. "I’ve introduced hurdling to his training and it seems to have him really switched on. He won three on end before finishing third then he had no luck last start."

Alexander’s Magic is having his first start beyond 2000m but Young doesn’t expect any problems.

"We bought him as a hurdler and everything he’s done indicated he wouldn’t have any trouble with the trip," Young said. "You never know until you try, but he is still on the way up and has a light weight, so I think he’s a definite each-way chance."

Another pointer in his favour is senior rider Neville Wilson, who will make the trip to Adelaide to ride Young’s stablemates. Prince Zamla will cart 57kg but Alexander’s Magic has just 52kg – a weight Wilson rarely rides at.

1030sturt.jpg (4979 bytes)The Strathalbyn Racing Club, in partnership with the Sturt Football Club, are holding a Race Away the Blues Day on Wednesday 6th November 2002 at Strathalbyn Racecourse.

The racing club has donated naming rights to all races on the day to the Sturt Football Club and their sponsors, with all proceeds to be donated to their designated charities and foundations associated with the recent tragic events in Bali.

At the start of the year, the Sturt Football Club began its pre-season training at Strathalbyn and many of its players celebrated its premiership win at our last meeting in October. Celebrations continued with a trip to Indonesia where three days later a number of the players were involved in the terrorist attacks in Bali.

The Strathalbyn Racing Club hopes to assist the Sturt Football Club in providing some financial and moral support in rebuilding the lives of many of those who were present on that fateful day.

The Strathalbyn Racing Club encourages all members of the general public, especially Sturt members and supporters, to join Sturt players and officials at the race meeting at Strathalbyn Racecourse.

Racing Club Secretary Nick Bawden commented that "the recent horrific events in Bali have affected each and every one of us in some way and the thoroughbred racing industry views this event as our way of helping to support the relief effort."

Financial assistance can be offered by racegoers via donations to collectors on the day. Additionally this race day is a great opportunity for all Sturt fans to provide moral support for the players and officials who will be in attendance, and a way to help us all begin the healing process.

Admission for the day is $7 and $3.50 (Concession) with under 18’s admitted free.
