RACE 1 – UNITE WMC/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1000 metres
POWER OF GRACE was a late withdrawal at 12.05 p.m. on Veterinary advice, when that filly had injured itself when being unloaded from the float on arrival at the course and had sustained lacerations to its head and legs, which required First Aid.
JEUNELINE (R. Faehr) jumped away extremely awkwardly and as a result was slow to begin.
RACE 2 – BRADKEN MINERAL PROCESSING CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1000 metres
KEEP WAITING (R. Faehr) jumped away awkwardly and as a result missed the start by several lengths.
RACE 3 – SA OUTBACK BUSINESSES/SABIS CLASS D HANDICAP - 1200 metres
Upon jumping away DAME DUVESSA (J. Burgess) shifted in, resulting in MONSOON BABY (R. Faehr) being inconvenienced.
In the vicinity of the 700 metres PARIS LACE (H. Gower) brushed the running rail.
MONSOON BABY (R. Faehr) raced ungenerously in the early stages of the race and showed a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.
RACE 4 – ONESTEEL ROXBY DOWNS CUP - 1800 metres
P. Rayner, who was indisposed earlier, was treated by St. John Ambulance Personnel and declared fit to fulfil her engagement in this race.
Stewards permitted P. Rayner to rider one kilogram overweight on GRETROBY when no other rider was available.
Stewards also permitted Murray Henderson to ride TEHRIER two kilograms above its allotted weight.
When the gates were released JEALTS EXPRESS (H. Gower) dwelt slightly.
RACE 5 – CAVILL CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1400 metres
Racing to the 1200 metres, where the 1400 metre chute joins the course proper, LINE OF GOLD (H. Gower) became extremely unbalanced and lost its position when that gelding shifted inside the line of the rail and had to be corrected.
Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow R. Faehr, rider of the 2nd Placegetter KEEN ON BILL, and that gelding’s Trainer Mr. M. Whittle to view the official photo-print for the win. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was duly declared.
RACE 6 – UNITE/CENTRAL 7 CLASS D HANDICAP - 1600 metres
Prior to this event R. Faehr was examined by St. John Ambulance Personnel after he had injured his arm in the gates in the previous event. R. Faehr was declared fit to ride.
In the vicinity of the 1200 metres RENDL (B. Grimston) shifted in onto DANGER CHARGER (R. Faehr), who in turn shifted in onto SHE GOES OFF (H. Gower), resulting in DANGER CHARGER and SHE GOES OFF brushing. As a result, PURE CLASS (J. Burgess), which was racing inside of SHE GOES OFF, became tightened and had to be checked. B. Grimston was advised in future to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Subsequent to the event R. Faehr, rider of DANGER CHARGER, advised Stewards the gelding had shown a tendency to hang in throughout the event.

Track: Slow RACE 1 – CLEANAWAY MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres BIG IMPRA (J. Lyon) jumped away awkwardly. Racing to the 700 metres YOUNG ROSE (Darren Holland) commenced to hang out and continued to hang out for the remainder of the race and finished extremely wide in the straight. As a consequence Darren Holland was unable to ride YOUNG ROSE out to the finish of the race. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of YOUNG ROSE revealed that it was suffering from soreness in its off side lower back and showing signs of soreness in the forelegs. Mr. J. Cornell, representing trainer Mr. A. McEvoy, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required and the filly would also be required to complete a satisfactory official barrier trial before accepting for a future event. In the vicinity of the 250 metres OUTBACK GOLD (D. Carney) shifted out abruptly and as a result ORA SMYTZER (J. Bowditch) had to be eased. Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of RED TRICK revealed no visible abnormalities. RACE 2 – DOUBLE VICE/SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1050 metres The start of this race was delayed due to REGAL FLUTE (J. Holder), ZEDOS (J. Maund) and BLACK CURRENCY (W. Kerford) all being difficult to load into the barriers. Mr. D. McMahon, representing Mr. W. Tonkin, trainer of BLACK CURRENCY, Mr. L. Macdonald, trainer of REGAL FLUTE, and Mr. R. Paech, trainer of ZEDOS, were warned that should their respective horses prove difficult to load in the barrier in future, action may be taken against them. MOON ROCK (B. Grimston) was slow to begin. Racing to the 600 metres ARMED AND READY (J. Lyon) had to be eased to avoid the heels of LADY ASHLYN (J. Potter) when that filly shifted out. RACE 3 – DANETOP CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1050 metres SO LATE (J. O’Connor) was slow to begin. J. O’Connor, the rider of SO LATE, explained that the gelding had been disappointing throughout the race and that after jumping away awkwardly had raced with its head up and had failed to respond to his riding at any stage of the race. Racing from the 900 metres to the 700 metres GOLD ABACUS (B. Claridge) had to be steadied on several occasions to avoid the heels of MONSOON BABY (Darren Holland). On return to scale BARLEES became cast in the dismounting stall and as a result its rider, J. Bowditch, was dislodged. BARLEES suffered minor abrasions during the incident. J. Bowditch was examined by the Club’s Doctor, who declared him unfit to ride for the remainder of the day, and he was conveyed to hospital for observation. RACE 4 – BURNS CEILINGS & BUILDING SUPPLIES HIGHWEIGHT CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1950 metres SPELL OF DANE (M. Madden) jumped away awkwardly. Racing to the 400 metres BOWOOD ROAD (S. McDermott) rolled in inconveniencing SPELL OF DANE (M. Madden). Shortly after this incident SPELL OF DANE, which was weakening, shifted in, resulting in ATLANTIC (J. Mansell) being taken in and NASTIVE EDITION (D. Howard), being inconvenienced. G. Dorol, the rider of RUBITON ROYALE, explained that racing to the 200 metres he had elected to take a run to the inside of DANE’S REWARD (G. Young) but due to that gelding rolling back onto the rail, RUBITON ROYALE was disappointed for a run over the concluding 100 metres. RACE 5 – SANDERS SEED CLEANERS CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1600 metres BAUDIN (M. Neilson) jumped away awkwardly. Racing to the 700 metres GO SPIDER (B. Claridge) became unbalanced and had to be eased to avoid the heels of KING KEEPERS (J. Potter) when that gelding rolled in. Racing to the 600 metres and to the 500 metres, GO SPIDER (B. Claridge) was held up for some distance and lost ground due to KING KEEPERS (J. Potter) weakening. RACE 6 – FENTON’S MACHINERY CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1400 metres AWAY WITH FAIRIES (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly and was slow to begin. Trainer, Mr. L. Macdonald, was advised that a repetition of the mare’s performance could lead to action being taken against it. Racing to the 1200 metres TAX HALO (J. Potter) laid in and inconvenienced VALIANT CHIEF (M. Neilson). Shortly after this incident NAFIR (NZ) (B. Grimston) shifted in resulting in TAX HALO having to be checked to avoid the heels of NAFIR (NZ). VALIANT CHIEF also had to be eased to avoid the heels of NAFIR (NZ). B. Grimston was advised that, whilst not entirely responsible, he should exercise greater care in future. S. Price, the rider of UNBRIDLED LAD, explained to the Stewards that he had been hampered from the 600 metres until the 400 metres due to SHUKU HAI (N. Tomizawa) shifting out on several occasions. Racing to the 200 metres SAN SONATA (NZ) (J. Lyon) shifted in and inconvenienced DANA’S GIFT (NZ) (W. Kerford) and shortly after SAN SONATA (NZ) shifted away from DANA’S GIFT (NZ), resulting in TAX HALO (J. Potter) having to be eased and shift outwards to obtain a clear run. Shortly after the 200 metres AWAY WITH FAIRIES (J. Holder) was disappointed for a run and had to ease to avoid the heels of BENARDO (D. Tootell). KAZOO (NZ) suffered a laceration to its off fore pastern. RACE 7 – ELDERS REAL ESTATE CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1200 metres HOUSE GUEST (S. Price) was slow to begin. MISS PUBLICITY (N. Tomizawa) and LADY GLENLEIGH (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly. RACE 8 – SMARTCHOICE MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres SENDIN’ ME GREY (W. Kerford) was difficult to load and as a result that gelding’s trainer, Miss M. Taylor, was warned that a repetition of its barrier manners could lead to action being taken against it. On jumping away DOT COM FEVER (D. Carney) and BELIKELY (J. Maund) bumped. Approaching the 400 metres KENTON KNIGHT (B. Vale) had to be eased to avoid the heels of IRISH BLESSING (C. Lindop), when that mare rolled in. Racing inside the 400 metres IRISH BLESSING (C. Lindop) was disappointed for a run and had to avoid the heels of SOUND TYCOON (P. Gatt). Weather: Overcast Rail: True RACE 1 – SMOKE-FREE SABIS MAIDEN PLATE - 1400 metres DEVENEY (R. Faehr) was slow to begin. A veterinary examination of HAIRAN, which tired quickly from the 700 metres, revealed that the gelding was slightly dehydrated and showing symptoms of a medical condition. Mr. G. Kelly, trainer of HAIRAN, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for any future event. RACE 2 – WEST END DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 metres TROPHY HOLDER (B. Claridge) jumped away awkwardly. B. Vale, rider of BEAU INCA, the third placegetter, lodged an objection against M. Hoppo, rider of LOTTIE, the second placegetter, for alleged interference in the vicinity of the 200 metres. After taking evidence from both riders, on viewing the official videos of the race and acting on their own observations, Stewards DISMISSED B. Vale’s objection. In the vicinity of the 200 metres BEAU INCA (B. Vale), which had been disappointed for a run inside of LOTTIE (M. Hoppo), had to be eased and shift out around the heels of LOTTIE when that mare shifted in slightly. A veterinary examination of LAZYDAZE, which was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages of the event, revealed no visible abnormalities. RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1600 metres Upon jumping away PURE CLASS (J. Burgess) shifted out abruptly resulting in TEHRIER (J. Potter) being hampered. Shortly after the start WINESONG (B. Claridge) was hampered for a short distance due to FLAMING FOOTPRINTS (B. Vale) shifting in slightly and showing a tendency to lay onto WINESONG at the same time as PARIS LACE (N. Tomizawa) shifted out slightly. Racing to the 1400 metres PELIGRO (W. Kerford) jumped a patch on the track and became unbalanced. In the vicinity of the 1250 metres FABIO PENNACCHIO (B. Grimston) dipped slightly. A veterinary examination of PELIGRO subsequent to the event revealed no visible abnormalities. RACE 4 – WEST END DRAUGHT HANDICAP - 1600 metres RED PADDY (J. Burgess) was slow to begin. In the vicinity of the 1250 metres TEE OFF TIME (J. Potter) dipped. RACE 5 – WEST END DRAUGHT FLYING HANDICAP - 1100 metres ONYX RIVER (M. Neilson) jumped away awkwardly. SIR MOULA (W. Kerford) and MERRY CASH (B. Claridge) were both slow to begin. Inside the 400 metres RACKET (J. Potter) shifted out slightly resulting in ONYX RIVER (M. Neilson) being taken wider on the track. Mr. P. Hughes, trainer of SIR MOULA, which was reluctant to be loaded and sat down in the gates prior to the start, was advised that a warning had been placed on that gelding and a repetition of its behaviour would lead to action being taken against it. RACE 6 – SMOKE-FREE CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1100 metres Stewards questioned apprentice, B. Claridge, Mr. P. Hughes, trainer of EVIL LADY, and Mr. D. McMahon, trainer of LINE OF GOLD, regarding the reason for B. Claridge being doubly engaged in this event. Stewards will seek an explanation from Mr. K.M. Sweeney, Master of B. Claridge, at a later date to determine whether a breach of the Rules has occurred. Stewards determined that B. Claridge ride EVIL LADY and when no other rider was available to be engaged for LINE OF GOLD, Stewards withdrew that gelding at 2.45 pm. KEEP WAITING (D. Tootell) reared upon jumping. MISS COALPEPPER (Maree Henderson) raced ungenerously and showed a tendency to hang out in the early and middle stages of the race. In the vicinity of the 600 metres MISS COALPEPPER (Maree Henderson) shifted out abruptly resulting in TARARI FOX (R. Faehr) being inconvenienced. RACE 7 – WEST END DRAUGHT CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 metres Upon jumping away WINARGO (N. Tomizawa) and KEEN ON BILL (C. Lindop) were both severely hampered due to SAUNTERING (R. Faehr) shifting in abruptly onto WINARGO and at the same time, WISE CRACKER (D. Tootell) shifting out, taking BLIGHTY (M. Neilson) out onto KEEN ON BILL. Racing inside the 400 metres OLD SEA SALT (M. Hoppo) commenced to hang out and became unbalanced for a short distance when racing tight on the inside of WISE CRACKER (D. Tootell). OLD SEA SALT continued to hang severely to the finish. Subsequent to the event a veterinary examination of OLD SEA SALT revealed no visible abnormalities. Mr. D. Oxlade, the trainer of WINARGO, was advised by Stewards that a warning had been placed on that mare in relation to its reluctance to go to the barriers. Firetaine returned to the form that saw him win the Carlton Draught 12 months before in winning the opening race on the card. Again ridden by Brian Park he raced away to easily defeat last start feature winner Lucentier and Galadriel who got very toey before the race when heading to the barrier. Race 2 - Alcohol Go Easy/Be Discreet Stakes - LISTED
The second race of the day for 2yos has unearthed Group 1 performers such as Umrum and Lashed in recent years and a classy group lined up this year. In the run to the line Under the Bridge powered down the outside to win from the consistent Outback Lad with the talented Barabba Road third. Race 3
Debben returned to her best form in Race 3 to stride home in the rain to win from Clay Man with Exalted Time in third place. Debben was the second winner of the day after Under the Bridge sired by Blevic. Race 4 - Widden/City of Adelaide Stakes - LISTED

Widden Stakes by a nose from the talented Winning Spirit with None for the
Road third.
As the main lead up to next week's Derby there was great interest in the Veuve Clicquot Stakes. In the end class showed through as recent AJC Derby placegetter Mummify stormed away from the opposition to win easily with the filly Larrocha second and Vicksburg running on late for third. Mummify is SA bred being by Jeune from classy mare Cleopatra's Girl. Race 6 - Australasian Oaks - GROUP 1
Lashed, Ribe, Sound Action, Jameela and Yvonne were all in the market for the Australasian Oaks the first Group 1 of the carnival. Fillies had gathered from New Zealand, Victoria, Sydney's carnival and the local contingent to fight the race out. In the end it was Roberta Maguire's very first runner in a stakes race Sound Action who proved a class above the opposition. Second went to Milanova with outsider Great Anna finishing on well for third. Race 7 - Honda/DC McKay Stakes - Group 3
A classy group of sprinters gathered for the Honda Stakes considered the main lead up to the Goodwood Hcp in two weeks. Super Elegant didn't enjoy the best of runs being out wide but was still too strong at the finish to win from Deprave with Agalia third. Race 8
As the shadows drew across the track the final race produced an upset as Smytzer's Mustang proved too good racing clear in the final stages to win easily. Smyzter's Mustang went through the sales ring twice as a young horse. The first time as a foal at foot with his dam Tashka and then just over 12 months later at the Adelaide Yearling Sales. Recent South Australian success through yearlings sold through the Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale not only include Saturday's many runners featured above but the Lee Freedman trained True Glo sold in 2001 won the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.
All The Carnival Action From Morphettville Saturday

A full field of 2yo fillies began the weekend of Carnival racing. Adelaide Autumn yearling sales buy Mrs Spudley stormed home between runners in the straight to win from Endamon with Rainbow Fortune filling third place. Race 2 - SA Sires' Produce Stakes - Group 3
The time honoured SA Sires Produce Stakes was the second race of the day. Last years quinella of Lashed and Hydrometer went on to be beaten narrowly in the Group 1 VRC Oaks and Derby at the Victorian Spring carnival with third placed Dextrous taking out the Sandown Guineas and several other stakes races. This year promising Blevic gelding Under the Bridge was expected to complete a hat trick of victories following on from his win in the Alcohol Go Easy Stk on May 10. Racing as anticipated in the straight Under the Bridge chased down the leaders to hit the front and held off a determined challenge from promising filly Dane Beltar to win with Pay Keys (by Taos) running on late for third. Challenge 2003 Final
In the Smoke Free Challenge Final with a field comprised of heat winners from across the state the race was considered wide open with many considered a winning chance. As the favourite Taos Pleasure kicked clear in the straight it looked like the punters had made the right decision in a difficult race but in the shadows of the post the first emergency King Crow (by King's High) flew down the outside to grab the lead and win going away from Taos Pleasure (by Taos) with honest gelding Aptego filling third position. Race 4 - Proud Miss Stakes
Unrocel Saint returned to her best form in defying the gallant grey Devil in Disguise to run her down in the Proud Miss Stakes. Third place was filled by Crest of Gold who fought on strongly after leading in the early stages. Race 5 - SA Oaks - Group 1
The first of the Group 1 races saw the clouds darken and the rain start to fall as the fillies paraded before the race. Sound Action looked very hard to beat but some were quietly confident that Tony McEvoy could break his Group 1 duck and train the winner from the stable's three runners Milanova, Jameela and Larrocha. On settling Sound Action found herself in front as nothing else took her on and the filly found herself in an unaccustomed roll. Larrocha settled in behind the favourite with Milanova close up. Turning for home Sound Action tried to kick clear but the new roll left her without the usual sprint home and she rolled out slightly leaving room for Larrocha to make a dash for home on the rails as local longshot hope Pipkin hit the front out wider. Into the straight Larrocha quickly drew level with Pipkin as Sound Action fought back and Jameela made ground from well back. Inside the final 50m Larrocha was too strong winning from Jameela resulting in a McEvoy quinella with Pipkin third just ahead of Sound Action with a gap to the others. Fittingly the first Group 1 race after the announcement of champion stallion Danehill's death was taken out by one of his progeny while Jameela's sire Jeune just missed out on his second Group 1 winner in 8 days after taking out his first Group 1 with Mummify in the SA Derby. Third placed Pipkin is by Gallo Di Ferro who also produced the first winner of the program Mrs Spudley. Race 6 - Goodwood Hcp - Group 1
Rain fell as the runners came out for the Goodwood Hcp. Past winners of the race have included Matrice, Aurie's Star, Bold Jet, Beau George, Jolly Old Mac, Euclase with last year's winner Zip Zip Aray again lining up for the race. This years field included the multiple Group 1 winner Bomber Bill, in form galloper Super Elegant, grand old Suit, exciting racehorse from Canberra Into the Night, newcomer Super Groove plus Adelaide's promising sprinter Squillani winner of 7 of 12 starts. The field of 20 sped away from the barriers with Super Groove taking up the lead as sentimental favourite Bomber Bill was well back in second last place around the home turn. On straightening Squillani burst clear from Super Groove and looked set to claim victory but Bomber Bill threaded through the field to see daylight by the 200m and storm after the leader. By the 50m Bomber Bill hit the front and came away to win from the gallant Squillani with Defier finishing hard late for third with Panorama Heights fourth and Deprave fifth. Race 7 - Stuart Crystal Stakes - LISTED
As the clouds grew darker again the last of the day's stakes races was held. Social Glow hit the front in the straight but was immediately challenged by Debben with Fairessa flying down the outside. On the line Social Glow held on to win narrowly from the other two fillies with Jeune Amour fourth and Kabushka fifth. Race 9 - Carbine Club Trophy As per Derby day the darkness closed in as the last race was run. In an exciting race finish the grey Unbridled Lad was in front but as he had Oakbank when he won and the previous week at Morphettville where he was held off by Firetaine, Lucentier powered home on the outside to win well from Cezante. South Australia again had success at the Brisbane races with Magique Sky taking out the first race on the program. Magique Sky was sold at the 2000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

WEATHER: Fine RAIL: True RACE 1 – SCOTT’S GROUP OF COMPANIES / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division) – 1100 metres TAOS PLEASURE (D. Missen) was slow to begin. FULL GLOW (C. Lindop) jumped away awkwardly. RACE 2 –CUB / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division) – 1100 metres FULL ON RED, which raced the previous day, underwent a Veterinary examination and was declared fit. FABIAN BAY (C. Lindop) and LAKE PLACID (S. Harrison) raced greenly in the early stages of the event. Racing to the 600 metres BON TRUCE (P. Marks) shifted out, resulting in FABIAN BAY (C. Lindop) being taken out and having to ease to avoid the heels of CARD STAR (G. Hoobin). P. Marks was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. SPIRIT WIND (B. Neville) commenced to hang out approaching the 800 metres and racing to the 400 metres the gelding hung out and as a result B. Neville was unable to ride SPIRIT WIND out in his normal manner. Mr. S. Turner, Trainer of SPIRIT WIND, was advised that a repetition of the gelding’s racing behaviour could lead to action being taken against it. RACE 3 – PETER NORMAN DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE – 1700 metres TKACHEV underwent a Veterinary examination at the barrier and was declared fit. GOLDEN TAOS (D. Missen) jumped out at the start and bumped TKACHEV (D. Mittiga), which shifted out and hampered SPECTACULAR RUN (NZ) (D. Yendall). Racing to the 1000 metres CADILLAC MISS (NZ) (B. Blacker) had to ease to avoid the heels of GOLDEN TAOS (D. Missen), when that mare shifted in. As a result, CADILLAC MISS (NZ) shifted out and raced wide throughout. D. Missen was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Racing to the 600 metres SPIDER HENRY (C. Lindop) had to be eased to avoid the heels of NON NEGOTIABLE (S. Harrison), and as a result SPIDER HENRY became unbalanced for a short distance. RACE 3 – PETER NORMAN DISTANCE MAIDEN PLATE – 1700 metres Correct Weight was delayed to permit C. Again ridden by Brian Park he raced away to easily defeat last start feature winner Lucentier and Galadriel who got very toey before the race when heading to the barrier. The second race of the day for 2yos has unearthed Group 1 performers such as Umrum and Lashed in recent years and a classy group lined up this year. In the run to the line Under the Bridge powered down the outside to win from the consistent Outback Lad with the talented Barabba Road third. Race 3

As the main lead up to next week's Derby there was great interest in the Veuve Clicquot Stakes. In the end class showed through as recent AJC Derby placegetter Mummify stormed away from the opposition to win easily with the filly Larrocha second and Vicksburg running on late for third. Mummify is SA bred being by Jeune from classy mare Cleopatra's Girl. Race 6 - Australasian Oaks - GROUP 1
Lashed, Ribe, Sound Action, Jameela and Yvonne were all in the market for the Australasian Oaks the first Group 1 of the carnival. Fillies had gathered from New Zealand, Victoria, Sydney's carnival and the local contingent to fight the race out. In the end it was Roberta Maguire's very first runner in a stakes race Sound Action who proved a class above the opposition. Second went to Milanova with outsider Great Anna finishing on well for third. Race 7 - Honda/DC McKay Stakes - Group 3
A classy group of sprinters gathered for the Honda Stakes considered the main lead up to the Goodwood Hcp in two weeks. Super Elegant didn't enjoy the best of runs being out wide but was still too strong at the finish to win from Deprave with Agalia third. Race 8
As the shadows drew across the track the final race produced an upset as Smytzer's Mustang proved too good racing clear in the final stages to win easily. Smyzter's Mustang went through the sales ring twice as a young horse. The first time as a foal at foot with his dam Tashka and then just over 12 months later at the Adelaide Yearling Sales. Recent South Australian success through yearlings sold through the Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale not only include Saturday's many runners featured above but the Lee Freedman trained True Glo sold in 2001 won the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.
