Monday, 24 January 2005 00:00
South Australian trainer
Leon Macdonald will push forward to the $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup
with his quality mare Dakasha despite her failing to place in the Group 3
Queen’s Cup (2100m) in Launceston last Sunday.
Dakasha rattled home late
to finish on the heels of the placegetters in the Queen’s Cup in what was
her first lead-up race to the AAMI Hobart Cup.
“I think it is fair to say
the mare was a victim of circumstances in the Queen’s Cup but all is not
lost because the AAMI Hobart Cup has always been her main mission,”
Macdonald said.
“The mare has settled in
really well at Gary White’s stable and we’ll now press on to the
weight-for-age St Leger (2100m) in Launceston in a fortnight and that should
have her at her peak for the Hobart Cup,” he said.
Macdonald enjoyed success
at last year’s carnival with Almost Never who won the Tasmanian Derby, but
despite the gelding being in top form this preparation the trainer confirmed
the Derby winner would not be a first acceptor for the AAMI Hobart Cup.
“The owners of Almost Never
have decided against travelling the horse so he’s definitely not coming for
the cups,” he said.
While Dakasha was unlucky
in the Queen’s Cup, the winner of the race Midnight Escapade, from the
Charlie Goggin stable, has emerged as a genuine lightweight chance in the
AAMI Hobart Cup.
Midnight Escapade produced
her customary whirlwind finish in the Queen’s Cup to come from last nearing
the home turn to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Dream Quest with Bay Ritz
almost two lengths away, third.
Goggin is thinking
seriously about the possibilities of winning his third AAMI Hobart Cup with
the five-year-old mare.
“I have no doubt she is a
Mowbray specialist but the owners might prefer to head to the Hobart Cup and
that’s a serious option as that race has been reduced to 2100m and she has a
light weight,” Goggin said.
“But that’s not to say she
won’t get the 2400m of the AAMI Launceston Cup, so we have a few options,”
he said.
Midnight Escapade was
handicapped to carry 51kg in the AAMI Hobart Cup but she has incurred a
1.5kg penalty for the Queen’s Cup win.
Victorian trainer Peter
Moody confirmed he still has four or five of his eight AAMI Hobart Cup
nominations in the mix. However, his talented mare Sky Love was no longer a
consideration and will now be spelled.
“Highclere ran a good race
on Saturday over 2400m, so he’ll definitely be accepting for the Hobart Cup
and I’ll make a decision on Mr. Lofty and the mare Quintanella after they
run on Saturday,” he said.
Go Riding, a four-year-old
regarded by Moody as being similar to Zacielo, who won the AAMI
Hobart-Launceston cups double last year, will be given another chance to
earn a trip to Tasmania when he lines up in a 2000m race at Moonee Valley on
February 3.
Go Riding failed in a race
at Kyneton last week but Moody said the wet track brought about the
gelding’s downfall.
“Go Riding needed a firmer
track and there’s no doubt the wet track affected his performance but,
hopefully, he’ll strike a good surface at Moonee Valley and if he runs well
he’s chance to head to the Hobart Cup,” Moody said.
The AAMI Tasmanian Summer
Racing Carnival officially kicks off in Hobart on Sunday with the Thousand
Guineas, Hobart Guineas and weight-for-age Tattersall’s Stakes as the
feature races on the card.
Moody confirmed Shining
Storm as a certain starter in the Hobart Guineas (1600m) and his handy mare
La Bella Zoccola would contest the weight-for-age sprint over 1200m.
ON CURFEW (Troy Atkin)
threw its head in the air at the start and lost ground.

Wynne) was slow to begin.

Jockey B McCoull
(CHRONOMETER) stated that the mare travelled well down the back straight
but failed to respond to vigorous riding and the conditions of today’s
track may not have been favourable and as the mare had not started in 9
months, may have been in need of a run.
A post race veterinary
examination of ANDAMAN SEA (Shannon Brazil) revealed the filly had blown
significantly and had a poor recovery, but there were no other obvious
abnormalities.

weighing riders out. Apprentice Boxall was informed that it is also her
responsibility to make sure she carries the correct weight.
CATBOY (NZ) (B McCoull) jumped out at the start as a result DRUM TIME
(D Pires) had to be steadied by its rider.
KAT’S CLAUSE (S Snell) was fractious in the barriers and jumped out at

underwent a pre race Veterinary examination after the gelding got down in
the float on the way to the track. No obvious abnormalities were
revealed and BRAINPOWER was found fit to take its place in the
field.
Jockey Shane Gates
(BRAINPOWER) was reprimanded under AR 137 (a) careless riding in that
shortly after the starthe allowed his mount to shift in
inconveniencing WARPED (K Dodge). Shortly thereafter
SPEECHMAKER (S Snell) shifted across in front of WARPED, who
then began to over race, shifted in and bumped with DAKASHA (C
Lindop) and as a result DAKASHA over raced and had to shift out
over the heels of BRAINPOWER.
Rounding the home
turn SPEECHMAKER (S Snell) who was making ground to the outside of
WARPED (K Dodge) rolled in marginally resulting in DAKASHA
(C Lindop) having to be steadied by its rider.
A swab sample was
taken from the winner of the race MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (Trainer C
Goggin).
RACE 8 – THE MALUA CLUB
STAKES (Class 6 Handicap) – 1600 METRES

under AR 137 (a) careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift
ground outwards tightening TURNING RED (L Goodrick) out onto and
bumping with TALK OF A STAR (P Crich) before he obtained pressure
from DESIGN ACADEMY (M Ball (a)) on his inside at approximately
the 300 metres.

RACE 1 – BRIGHTON
COUNCIL CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES
Shortly after
the start, KELLEN (M Ball (a)) shifted ground inwards when
insufficiently clear of SPRINGFIELD MAN (S Snell) resulting in
that gelding having to be steadied by its rider and shift out over
the heels of KELLEN. As a result, SPRINGFIELD MAN got its head up
and over-raced for a short distance. In all the circumstances
Apprentice M Ball was reprimanded under AR-137(a) careless riding
and advised that a repetition of this type of riding may result in
stronger action being taken in future.
At
approximately the 800 metres, SCOTTISH SYMBOL (S Gates) had to be
momentarily steadied off the heels of CHAZARD (T Atkin).
KELLEN (M Ball
(a)) had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding
stages.
RACE 2 – FOWLES
AUCTION GROUP SUPERVOBIS MAIDEN PLATE (2YO MAIDEN - SET WEIGHTS) –
1100 METRES
The Club’s
veterinary surgeon inspected GOLDEN SURPRISE (Trainer Allan
Stubbs) prior to the start after the filly injured itself in the
float en route to the racecourse. GOLDEN SURPRISE was
subsequently passed fit to take its place with the field.
The start of this race was delayed when GOLDEN
SURPRISE (S Brazil) and KING’S SCHOLAR (B McCoull) both proved a
little difficult to load into their barrier stalls.
As the start was affected, KING’S SCHOLAR (B
McCoull) reared and lost ground in consequence.
JADEEBURKE (S Hamer (a)) jumped in at the
start.
Racing towards the 700 metres, QUEST FOR JOY (M
Ball (a)) rolled in marginally resulting in ARIA QUEST (S Snell)
laying in and away on to LOUGHMOE CASTLE (S McFerran) who in turn
shifted in and laid on to VILLA MARIA (S Maskiell) for some
distance. Shortly thereafter LOUGHMOE CASTLE laid out despite the
efforts of its rider resulting in VILLA MARIA having to steady in
over LOUGHMOE CASTLE’s heels and as a result GOLDEN SURPRISE (S
Brazil) which was racing on the rails, being checked by its
rider. As this incident was deemed to be caused by horses racing
greenly, no direct action was taken against any one rider on this
occasion.
A post-race swab sample was taken from the
winner of the race KING’S SCHOLAR (Trainer Bill Ryan).
RACE 3
– GREEN GLORY HOLSTEIN STUD MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 1(3YO&UP
– SET WEIGHTS) – 1200 METRES
At the start,
RUMKER (C Kingston) jumped in on to LITTLE SAD (D Oakford)
resulting in that gelding being a little slow into stride.
ALLYANN (J
Geard (a)) jumped outwards at the start and brushed with PRINCE
FLYER (T Atkin).
STAR OF
PERSIAN (GB) (K Bandy) jumped out at the start and bumped with
LAKE DOUGLAS (S Gates).
SPRINGFIELD
ROSE (S Snell) had a tendency to over-race in the middle stages of
the event.
STAR OF
PERSIAN (GB) (K Bandy) had to be eased off the heels of
SPRINGFIELD ROSE (S Snell) approaching the 600 metres.
On entering
the home straight, SPRINGFIELD ROSE (S Snell) shifted out to
improve, resulting in DESERT ROMEO (L Goodrick) which was giving
ground at the time, having to be steadied by its rider.
Apprentice J
Geard pleaded guilty under AR 137(a) careless riding in that
approaching the 200 metres, when being ridden out by its rider she
permitted her mount (ALLYANN) to shift ground outwards resulting
in PRINCE FLYER (T Atkin) being carried out over the heels of
RUMKER (C Kingston) which shifted in marginally resulting in
PRINCE FLYER having to be checked by its rider. Stewards, in the
presence of Jockey Geard’s master, Trainer Mr T Roles, suspended
Jockey Geard’s licence to ride in races for a period of two race
meetings in Tasmania beginning at midnight on Wednesday, 5 January
2005 and expiring at midnight on 16 January 2005.
RACE 4 – GREEN GLORY HOLSTEIN STUD MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2(3YO&UP – SET
WEIGHTS) – 1200 METRES
The start of
this race was delayed when MAGIC LAUGHTER (Trainer Gary White) was
a late scratching at 2.16 pm after dislodging Jockey Kingston and
breaking through the front of its barrier stall and galloping some
distance. After being recaptured, MAGIC LAUGHTER, when being lead
back to the barriers, again broke away from the Clerk of the
Course and was declared a late scratching by Stewards at 2.16
pm. Jockey C Kingston was examined by the on-course ambulance
officers and declared fit to fulfil his remaining riding
engagements today. The start of this race was further delayed
when SOME TRUTH (Trainer Jason Clifford) was a late scratching at
2.16 pm acting on veterinary advice after injuring its right hock
in the barriers. Prior to the announcement of correct weight,
Stewards ordered all bets placed on MAGIC LAUGHTER and SOME TRUTH
prior to the scratching time of 2.16 pm to be refunded in full.
A deduction of ten cents for the win and ten cents for the place
on the face value of the ticket were ordered to be paid on all win
and place tickets. Trainer G White (MAGIC LAUGHTER) and Trainer
Jason Clifford (SOME TRUTH) were advised that both horses must
undergo a barrier trial to Stewards’ satisfaction before their
nominations for racing will be accepted.
As the start
was affected, DANARLI (NZ) (K Bandy) jumped awkwardly.
PRIMA CAVALLO
(B McCoull) and NILE PRINCESS (D Pires) bumped on jumping.
COME ON GRUMPY
(S Snell) and LAURIKAN BAY (T Atkin) were slow into stride.
A post-race
veterinary inspection of MAGIC LAUGHTER (Trainer G White) did not
reveal any abnormalities.
A swab sample
was taken from the winner of the race IRISH GREY (Trainer Royston
Carr).
RACE 5
– INDEPENDENT ROOFING SERVICE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES
At the start,
HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) jumped in and bumped with ENCOSTA NOVA (C
Kingston).
At
approximately the 900 metres, HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) lost a towel
from its gear under the saddle. On return to scale, HAIL THE GANG
weighed in at 0.4kg under its declared weight. Acting under the
provisions of AR-143 Stewards deemed HAIL THE GANG to have carried
the correct weight.
As the start
was affected, DARK EMBRACE (M Ball (a)) jumped out and made
contact with MINN (S Snell) on his outside and then shifted in and
made contact with the hindquarters of NO LAUGHING MATTER (L
Goodrick) and lost ground in consequence.
KAY TEE (D
Oakford) jumped in on to LADETO (S Gates) at the start who in turn
shifted in and bumped heavily with BEN BOWYANG (K Bandy).
STEAMBOAT ROCK
(C Kingston) was a little slow into stride.
At about the
1100 metres, MINN (S Snell) which was racing erratically, shifted
in and bumped with MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull). Thereafter MINN
continued to over-race.
At about the
250 metres, NO LAUGHING MATTER (L Goodrick) shifted out over the
heels of WEASEL WAV (S Maskiell) to take a tight run between that
filly and MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull) and as a result brushed with
MAGGIE BEE on several occasions.
Over the
concluding stages LADETO (S Gates) shifted in and brushed with
MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull).
RACE 7 – BRIGHTON
CUP– 2100 METRES
Pre-race blood
samples were taken from the following horses:
BOY BLUE Trainer
Charlie Goggin
RAHIRI
Trainer Jack Green
YES NO YES Trainer David
Brunton
OUR DASHING DANE Trainer
Jason Clifford
CORINDHAP Trainer Max
Wood
As the start
was affected, CORINDHAP (K Bandy) was tightened when YES NO YES (B
McCoull) jumped out and STAR JEUNE (C Kingston) jumped in.
Leaving the
500 metres, HIT THE SPOT (M Ball (a)) had to shift out to gain a
clear run behind the tiring JONES (S Maskiell).
Over the
concluding stages, JONES (S Maskiell) was eased out of the event
and pulled up by Jockey Maskiell prior to the finishing line. A
post-race veterinary inspection of JONES (Trainer Charlie Goggin)
revealed the gelding to have an irregular heart beat (probably
atrial fibrillation). Trainer Goggin was advised that he must
tender a veterinary certificate and ECG before JONES’ next race
start.
At about the
300 metres, RAHIRI (S Gates) shifted out to improve, resulting in
the tiring HEARTLESS (L Goodrick) having to be steadied off that
gelding’s heels. Jockey S Gates was shown the video of the race
and reminded that in future he must be fully clear before shifting
ground.
A post-race
veterinary inspection of HEARTESS (Trainer Christine Crook) failed
to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
RACE 8 – DUDLEY
CLARK INDUSTRIAL LAND SALES HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
An application
by Trainer David Brunton to replace Jockey K Bandy, who was 0.9kg
over FLOPPY BUMBLE’s allotted weight, was not granted by Stewards
under AR-118.
KING FLYER (S
Maskiell) knuckled on jumping.
KING FLYER (S
Maskiell) over-raced in the middle stages.
At the 600
metres WESTERN ROMEO (B McCoull) and KING FLYER (S Maskiell)
brushed.
At about the
250 metres, when struck with the whip, KING FLYER (S Maskiell),
laid in on to FLOPPY BUMBLE (K Bandy). Jockey Maskiell had to
stop riding and straighten the gelding.
Over the
concluding stages, BLESS THE LAD (S Snell) was eased out of the
event and pulled up by Jockey Snell prior to the finishing line.
A post-race veterinary inspection of BLESS THE LAD (Trainer Rodney
Seymour) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. When
questioned on the disappointing performance of BLESS THE LAD,
Jockey Snell stated that the gelding knuckled at the 800 metres
and again at the 600 metres and when placed under pressure at
approximately the 500 metres, BLESS THE LAD seemed to favour his
near-side resulting in Jockey Snell easing him out of the race.
Trainer Rodney Seymour was advised that the gelding must now trial
to Stewards’ satisfaction before its nomination for racing will be
accepted.
RACE 9 – BELLS
CONSTRUCTION CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES
Stewards found
Jockey L Goodrick guilty under AR 137(a) careless riding in that
approaching the 1150 metres, she rode her mount (FOR US ALL)
inwards when insufficiently clear of KATS CLAUSE (S Snell),
resulting in that mare being tightened and having to be checked in
over the heels of FOR US ALL. This resulted in CIVIC ART (K
Boxhall (a)) being carried in and making contact with PHARAOH’S
DAUGHTER (M Ball (a)) who in turn contacted the hind quarters of
ART MAJOR (S Hamer (a)) turning that horse sideways. Stewards
suspended Jockey Goodrick’s licence to ride in races for a period
of two race meetings in Tasmania beginning at midnight on
Wednesday, 5 January 2005 and expiring at midnight on 16 January
2005.
Approaching
the 600 metres ART MAJOR (S Hamer (a)) had to be steadied off the
heels of FOR US ALL (L Goodrick).
At
approximately the 600 metres, DEAR FRIEND (K Bandy) rolled in
marginally resulting in CIVIC ART (K Boxall (a)) having to be
steadied off that mare’s heels.
PHARAOH’S
DAUGHTER (M Ball (a)) had a tendency to lay in over the concluding
stages.

Trainer Tony McEvoy has confirmed a double-barrelled shot at winning his second AAMI Hobart Cup next month.
McEvoy, who won the race two years ago with Jeune's Mark, said You Little Beaut and Zingo would make the trip for the Group Three race on February 14.
You Little Beaut produced an eye-catching run in the Taranto Handicap (1980m) at Caulfield on Saturday when he flashed home late to finish on the heels of the placegetters.
McEvoy picked out the Hobart Cup for You Little Beaut some time ago but admitted to being frustrated with the six-year-old gelding's preparation.
"You Little Beaut is progressing nicely but things haven't panned out as I had hoped at his past two starts," McEvoy said.
"His recent lead-up races haven't been run to suit, but he's coming along nicely and he is a similar type of horse to Jeune's Mark who won the Hobart Cup two years ago.
"You Little Beaut's run at Caulfield on Saturday was full of merit given he was still last on the home turn. He hit the line full of running and with one more run under his belt he should be primed for the Hobart Cup."
McEvoy confirmed You Little Beaut would have his final hitout for the Cup at Caulfield over 2000m on January 26.
Zingo is a last-start winner at Victoria Park in a class six handicap over 1650m in which she powered home to score narrowly but with authority.
She is raced by John Singleton and is well-performed at Group level having been beaten a half-head by the John Hawkes-trained Entangle in the South Australian St Leger in May before heading north for the Queensland Oaks in which she was unplaced.
"Zingo is a lightly-raced Zabeel mare who has performed well against her own age and I'm sure she is going to be very competitive in Hobart," McEvoy said.
"If everything pans out I'll most likely return with her for the AAMI Launceston Cup."
Victorian trainer Peter Moody cleaned up last year with Zacielo winning both Cups and this year has nominated eight horses for the Hobart Cup including Davidoff, Mr Lofty and his classy mare Sky Love.

South
Australian trainer Tony McEvoy has set his sights on capturing his second
AAMI Hobart Cup and will take a two-pronged attack into this year’s race.
McEvoy,
who won the race two years ago with Jeune’s Mark, confirmed You Little Beaut
and Zingo would make the trip across Bass Strait for the Group 3 race over
2100m on February 14.
You
Little Beaut produced an eye-catching run in the Taranto Handicap (1980m) at
Caulfield on Saturday when he flashed home late to finish on the heels of
the placegetters.
McEvoy
singled out the AAMI Hobart Cup for You Little Beaut some time ago but
admitted to being frustrated with the six-year-old gelding’s preparation.
“You
Little Beaut is progressing nicely but things haven’t panned out as I had
hoped at his past two starts,” McEvoy said.
“His
recent lead-up races haven’t been run to suit, but he’s coming along nicely
and he is a similar type of horse to Jeune’s Mark who won the Hobart Cup two

“You

still last on the home turn. He hit the line full of running and with one
more run under his belt he should be primed for the Hobart Cup,” he said.
McEvoy
confirmed You Little Beaut would have his final hit-out for the AAMI Hobart
Cup in a race at Caulfield over 2000m on January 26.
Zingo is
a last-start winner at Victoria Park in a class six handicap over 1650m in
which she powered home to score narrowly but with authority.
Zingo (Zabeel-Wild
Applause) is raced by John Singleton and she is well-performed at Group

the South Australian St Leger in May last year before heading north for the
Queensland Oaks in which she was unplaced.
“Zingo

and I’m sure she is going to be very competitive in Hobart,” McEvoy said.
“If everything pans out I’ll most likely return with her for the AAMI
Launceston Cup.”
McEvoy
has nominated a team of 16 horses for various races during the AAMI
Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival including promising two-year-old Marjour
for the $100,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes (1200m) on AAMI Launceston Cup Day.
Marjour
scored an impressive debut win at Warrnambool on Sunday and McEvoy said he
was keen to include the youngster in the team to tackle the final day of the
carnival.
Victorian trainer Peter Moody cleaned up last year with Zacielo winning both
cups and this year he has nominated eight horses for the AAMI Hobart Cup,
including Davidoff, Mr. Lofty and his classy mare Sky Love.
Mr.
Lofty warmed up for the AAMI Hobart Cup with a fast-finishing fifth in the
Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Sky Love
will start her Tasmanian campaign on Sunday when she lines up in the Group 3
Queens Cup (2100m) in Launceston after which she will return to Melbourne to
prepare for either the AAMI Hobart or AAMI Launceston Cup.
The AAMI
Hobart Cup has attracted 61 nominations of which 30 are from interstate.
The AAMI
carnival has lured nominations from 37 interstate trainers who are keen to
chase some of the $1.8 million in prizemoney on offer in feature races over
the three-and-a-half weeks.
The
carnival begins on January 30 in Hobart with the Thousand Guineas, Hobart
Guineas and weight-for-age Tattersall’s Stakes after which the action moves
to Launceston for the weight-for-age St Leger meeting a week later.
Then
it’s back to Hobart for the Tasmanian Derby meeting on February 12 followed
two days later by the AAMI Hobart Cup.
The
carnival ends on February 23 with the Mowbray meeting that boasts a strong
support card of races outside of the $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Launceston Cup
(2400m).
