RACE 1 – GEOFFREY HARDMAN MEMORIAL HURDLE – 3000 METRES

SUPER CLASSIC (N Dunn) was incorrectly shown in the race book as not wearing blinkers, when in fact the gelding does.

SUPER CLASSIC (N Dunn) jumped the first hurdle awkwardly and lost ground.

Approaching the hurdle at the 2400 metres FLY GEORGIE (P Purcell) which was over racing had to be steadied off the heels of CHARLIE RAAMI (S Pateman) which was also over racing.

P Purcell (FLY GEORGIE) became unbalanced and was dislodged after the mare made the hurdle at the 2400 metres awkwardly.

SUPER CLASSIC (N Dunn) made the hurdles at the 1300 and 1000 metres awkwardly as a result lost ground.

KING CANALA (NZ) (P Hamblin) and JACARANDA PARK (T Wells) hit the hurdle at the 400 metres heavily resulting in the inside panel being knocked down.

CHATSWORTH (NZ) (A Trinder) stumbled on his approach when making the last hurdle as a result hit the hurdle heavily and stumbled thereafter resulting in Jockey A Trinder being momentarily unbalanced.

All runners were inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon on return to scale.

A post race Veterinary examination of SUPER CLASSIC (Trainer M Trinder) revealed this gelding to have sustained a small cut to the off knee.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race WARPED (Trainer M Trinder).

Shortly thereafter LEICA MADONNA (J Geard (a)) shifted ground outwards abruptly and carried LAKE LUCY LONG (C Kingston) wider on the track

PLUSH ROSE (S Maskiell) raced greenly from entering the home straight to the winning post.

Jockey L Goodrick reported CLANCY QUEST layed out from the 600 metres to the winning post.

JAIL KAT (Trainer D Brazendale) appeared to have a very short action during its preliminary.  JAIL KAT was examined by the vet at the barriers, and was passed fit and allowed to take its place in the field.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race AUTUMN WISH (Trainer T Roles).

RACE 3 – JOHN DAKIN FINANCIAL SERVICES  MAIDEN PLATE (3YO&UP SW DIV 2) – 1200 METRES

Jockey L Beer was fined $25.00 under AR 175 (k) negligence, for presenting in the mounting yard in the wrong colours.

At approximately the 950 metres SEVEN SEAS (K Boxall (a) shifted ground inwards abruptly making heavy contact with the running rail before breaking through it, resulting in Apprentice Boxall being dislodged.  Apprentice Boxall was taken to hospital for observation.  Stewards advised trainer A Wyllie that SEVEN SEAS would be stood down until such time as it trials satisfactorily.  A post race Veterinary examination of SEVEN SEAS (Trainer A Wyllie) revealed several minor lacerations and one severe cut to the near hind leg sustained whilst crashing through the running rail.  A Veterinary certificate will be required prior to this filly’s next official trial or race start.

LADY OF ROHAN (D Pires) was contacted by the broken running rail, after the rail flicked back into the path of LADY OF ROHAN.

AL CIELO (S Gates) over raced and threw its head in the air at start.

BIG CHEESE (S Snell) was held up for a run in the home straight.

A post race Veterinary examination of WOEWODIN (Trainer L Wells) revealed this gelding to have sustained a laceration to the base of the right ear.

RACE 4 – CASCADE DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE (3YO&UP SW DIV 1)  – 1400 METRES

In the home straight WYRELL (S Snell) when shifting ground out to obtain a clear run, bumped with AXIOM (S Hamer (a)).

TULFARRIS (G Ryan) over raced in the middle stages of the event.

At approximately the 1000 metres MISS QUCKSCORE (J Kehoe) shifted ground outwards as a result carried HILLTOP SUPREME (S Gates) out onto TANGLED (D Pires).  Jockey J Kehoe was shown the film and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground in future.

RACE 5 – GLOSS MAIDEN PLATE (3YO&UP SW DIV 2)  – 1400 METRES

GARLAND GREY (G Ryan) proved a little difficult to load into the barrier.

A post race Veterinary examination of MILLIONAIRE MAX (Trainer L Gaffney) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 – TATTERSALL’S GEORGE ADAMS PLATE (Listed WFA) – 1600 METRES

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when the riders of the second place getter, A DREAMER (B McCoull) and 5th place getter LONELY SHORE (S Snell) wished to view the official film with a view to lodging protests.  After viewing the film, Jockey S Snell lodged a protest against first (STUYVESANT) and second place getter (A DREAMER) for alleged interference over the concluding stages.  Jockey B McCoull lodged a protest against the first place getter (STUYVESANT) for alleged interference over the concluding stages.  After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the official film, Stewards dismissed all protests as they were of the belief that STUYVESANT had made considerable ground from well back in the field and had shifted in when passing Lonely Shore and A Dreamer.  The Stewards were also of the opinion that the material extent of the interference did not exceed the margins at the end of the race.

Jockey C Kingston was found guilty under AR 137 (a) careless riding in that over the concluding stages he allow his mount to shift ground inwards when insufficiently clear of LONELY SHORE  (S Snell) resulting in that horse being checked, thereafter he continued to shift ground inwards and bumped with A DREAMER (B McCoull).  Stewards suspended Jockey C Kingston’s licence to ride in races for a period of race meetings in Tasmanian to commence at midnight 23 February until midnight 6 March 2005.

Hobart Cup Winner's Ideal Draw for Launceston Feature

It was a mixture of good and bad news for the connections of interstate invaders entered for the 2005 AAMI Launceston Cup after today’s official barrier draw in the Launceston City Mall.

The Tony Vasil-trained pair Under The Bridge and Bondy did well drawing barriers five and seven respectively and the Peter Moody-trained and Tasmanian-owned Highclere also drew ideally in barrier three.

However, New Zealand gelding Burning Platform, prepared by John Wheeler, fared poorly with barrier 19 and South Australian mare Dakasha will start from gate 13.

The Tony Noonan-trained Pattie Royale will start from near the middle of the field in gate nine while the Tony McEvoy-trained You Little Beaut fared better than he did in the AAMI Hobart Cup drawing barrier eight.

It is unlikely that fourth emergency Roman Thunder, from the Robert Smerdon stable, will gain a start but if he does the gelding will start from barrier one.

AAMI Hobart Cup winner Our Dashing Dane drew barrier 11 but will start from gate nine if the third and fourth emergencies (Yomee and Roman Thunder) fail to gain a start. Since 1914, barrier 11 has been the most successful gate with 12 winners, while barrier nine is third best with eight wins (behind 12 with 11).

The Keith Horobin-trained mare Wild Rapid drew barrier two and Surge Of Power, who was third in last Monday’s AAMI Hobart Cup (2100m) also fared well with barrier four.

Vasil was more than pleased with how his two candidates fared at the draw and confirmed Bondy a definite starter but the jury was still out on Launceston Cup top weight Under The Bridge, who ran second to Our Dashing Dane in the AAMI Hobart Cup.

“At the moment both horses are heading to Launceston but Under The Bridge is also nominated for the Mornington Cup next Wednesday,” Vasil said.

Leading Victorian jockey Damien Oliver has been confirmed as the rider of the Tony McEvoy-trained You Little Beaut.

Oliver has partnered You Little Beaut at his past two starts and if the gelding is triumphant in the AAMI Hobart Cup it will give Oliver his first win on the Elwick track.

Caulfield trainer Tony Vasil confirmed Under The Bridge would line up in the AAMI Hobart Cup.

Under The Bridge is top weight with 57kg and Vasil said the four-year-old had recovered well from his last-start sixth at Flemington.

“I am very pleased with my horse’s progress so it’s all systems go for the trip to Hobart,” Vasil said.

The AAMI Hobart Cup barrier draw will take place in the city mall at noon on Wednesday and most of the Cup candidates will be on show at Elwick the following morning where they will gallop on the grass during the AAMI Breakfast with the Stars.

Our Dashing Dane On Double Mission in Launceston Cup

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/32762--sp-1481009209.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=The 2005 AAMI Hobart Cup produced a fairytale result for young Cradoc trainer Jason Clifford when his lightly raced five-year-old... size=small}

The 2005 AAMI Hobart Cup produced a fairytale result for young Cradoc trainer Jason Clifford when his lightly raced five-year-old Our Dashing Dane scored a convincing win in the Group 3 race over 2100m at Elwick on Monday.

Our Dashing Dane outgunned the favourite Under The Bridge in the home straight to defeat that horse by more than a length with Surge Of Power a fast-finishing third.

Now Clifford has set his sights on snaring the double as Our Dashing Dane heads to the $200,000 AAMI Launceston Cup at Mowbray next Wednesday (February 23).

Our Dashing Dane was first emergency and only gained a start at Elwick when Riley Redwing bowed a tendon four days before the race, paving the way for Clifford’s talented gelding to gain a start.

It was a dream come true for Clifford who has only been training for four years and Our Dashing Dane (Ladoni-Royal Theme) is the first horse, which he bought for a modest $2500 as a yearling to launch his training career.

“This is unbelievable. At one stage it looked like we would miss out and while I feel for the owners of Riley Redwing, I’m rapt things worked out as they did,” Clifford said.

“I genuinely believed he would finish in the top four because his previous start in the St Leger was great at weight-for-age and he dropped to 51kg today.

“I started to look at this race after he won a Class 2 handicap in Launceston last year and I was just hoping and praying he’d get a start.”

It also was a momentous occasion for Victorian jockey Christine Puls who gave Our Dashing Dane the run of the race.

“I was so thrilled when Jason (Clifford) called me to confirm the horse had gained a start because I thought he’d be a real chance,” Puls said.

“His run in the St Leger was full of merit because he was gone 200 metres out but refused to lay down and he again showed that courage, only this time he had a distinct weight advantage.

“This is my biggest win and I am really looking forward to riding him in the AAMI Launceston Cup,” she said.

Our Dashing Dane has incurred a two-kilogram penalty for the AAMI Launceston Cup but Clifford believes his stable star is still well in with 53kg.

“I knew he’d get a penalty and expected two kilograms but this horse will handle the weight rise and it’s not too significant,” he said.

Our Dashing Dane is owned and raced by the Rocky Affair Stud syndicate of which the trainer is manager with one of the other major shareholders being Mrs Beverley Keating and her husband Maurice who is one of Tasmania’s leading harness racing identities.

Clifford, 32, who trains only a small team of six at his property at Cradoc, took out a trainer’s licence on a whim.

“My Dad (Wayne) had suffered a broken back in a work accident and he was hanging about waiting for a pay-out so I thought I’d buy him a horse to cheer him up,” Clifford said.

“I got him a mare and she wasn’t much good but she produced a horse called Devon Affair that won a race so I guess my interest started back then.

“I bought this horse at the Tasmanian yearling sales and I almost conned my way into getting a trainer’s licence.

“I have never been afraid to ask questions and I’ve had some help from some good people in this industry along the way,” he said.

The connections of Under The Bridge must decide whether to target the AAMI Launceston Cup or stay at home and tackle the $175,000 Mornington Cup over 2000m on the same day.

Under The Bridge’s rider Kelvin Sanderson said the gelding is probably better suited over 2000m and that stablemate Bondy is more likely to represent the stable in the AAMI Launceston Cup.

Griffiths Chasing Hobart Cup With Lightweight

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/18528--sp-1903559249.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths is looking to realise a long-range plan with his talented mare Porto Douro in the $200,000... size=small}

Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths is looking to realise a long-range plan with his talented mare Porto Douro in the $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2100m) at Elwick next Monday (February 14).

Griffiths targeted the AAMI Hobart Cup for the mare three months ago and when the four-year-old won an open handicap for fillies and mares at Caulfield over 1950m on Boxing Day he declared the Hobart feature as her main mission.

“I’ve stretched her out in distance since the start of this preparation back in October and she has pleased me with every run,” Griffiths said.

“She won well at Sandown over 1800m five starts back. She followed up with a good win at Caulfield on Boxing Day when she carried 55.5kg and her past three runs have been very pleasing,” he said.

At her latest outing, Porto Douro finished a creditable sixth behind another AAMI Hobart Cup candidate Special Scene in the Gurner’s Lane Handicap over 2540m at Flemington last Saturday week.

Porto Douro (Encosta De Lago-Special Brew) will appreciate her lightweight of 51.5kg in the AAMI Hobart Cup, given she carried 56.5kg in an open handicap at Sandown two starts back when a gallant third behind Repute and Burning Platform.

It was the performance at Sandown that convinced Griffiths he had a genuine AAMI Hobart Cup prospect.

Griffiths has yet to finalise a jockey for the race but said Luke Nolan was being considered even though he has never ridden the mare.

“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble securing a suitable rider but we’ll be looking at finalising a jockey by Tuesday and travel arrangements also will be confirmed by then,” he said.

Travel arrangements to Tasmania for last-start Caulfield winner Party Pie are locked in with the lightly raced four-year-old booked on the Spirit of Tasmania on Wednesday and star apprentice Blake Shinn is confirmed as the rider.

Party Pie was an impressive winner over another AAMI Hobart Cup candidate You Little Beaut in an open handicap over 2000m at Caulfield on Australia Day.

Party Pie’s trainer Gerard Moloney said he couldn’t be happier with the promising young stayer.

“The horse has done extremely well since his Caulfield win and he will go into the Cup at his peak,” Moloney said.

“I galloped him on the steeple grass at Caulfield on Saturday morning and he worked a treat so everything is ticking along nicely,” he said.

Party Pie has only had 10 starts of which seven have been in this preparation.

The Brocco-Surreal Thing four-year-old broke his maiden status on debut in May last year at Benalla (1200m) and backed up a fortnight later with a strong win in a Class 1 at Seymour.

Moloney then tried him in the city but the gelding finished last in a 3YO handicap (1528m) after which he was spelled.

He resumed at Sale in late October to just miss a place in a Class 2 handicap but the gelding has gone from strength to strength since winning a Class 6 handicap over 1600m at Ballarat on December 12.

“The Hobart Cup will tell us if he’s as good as I think he is,” Moloney said.

Trainer C Goggin advised Stewards at 10.15 am that Apprentice B Shinn’s Manager had contacted him to notify him that Apprentice Shinn would be unable to fulfil his riding engagements at today’s racing programme due to transport difficulties.

RACE 1 –  CASCADE DRAUGHT CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1600 METRES

LIBERAL LOVER (D Yendall) cast a plate in the mounting yard when the gelding was fractious.  As the plate was unable to be re-attached, the plate from the other hind leg was removed and Stewards permitted LIBERAL LOVER to race barefoot behind.  A public announcement to this effect was made prior to the start of the race.

IRISH GREY (R McLeod) was fractious in the barriers.

DESERT ROMEO (S Maskiell) stumbled on jumping

I’M A BANDIT (D Pires) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

STAR OF PERSIAN (GB) (B McCoull) was held up from leaving the 500 metres until entering the home straight.

At approximately the 300 metres, I’M A BANDIT (D Pires) was hampered and had to be momentarily steadied by its rider when TANGLED (S Gates) shifted ground outwards.

At approximately the 200 metres, TANGLED (S Gates) was inconvenienced when STAR OF PERSIAN (GB) (B McCoull) shifted ground outwards under pressure and PARKLEA (C Puls) laid in.  As a result I’M A BANDIT (D Pires), which was following, had to change course.  Jockeys C Puls and B McCoull were shown the video of the incident and reminded of their obligations when allowing their mounts to shift ground in future.

PARKLEA (Trainer Jim Taylor) returned to scale with blood in both nostrils.  The Club’s veterinary surgeon conducted a post-race veterinary inspection and could find no sign of injury.  Therefore, Stewards advised Trainer Tim Taylor of the provisions of AR-53A (4) in that PARKLEA may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two months and the mare may not start in any race for a period of three months effective 14/02/2005, whereafter it is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race DESERT ROMEO (Trainer Darryl Howlin).

RACE 2 – SCANIA AUSTRALIA MAIDEN PLATE (3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS) 1100 METRES

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected DON CORLEONE (S Snell) prior to the start and passed the gelding fit to take its place with the field.

FANTA’S RETURN (J Cameron) and PERCEPTIVE (R McLeod) both lost off-hind plates during the running of this event.

BEAUCLOU (S Maskiell) over-raced at the 600 metres and was held up rounding the home turn before shifting wider on the track to obtain a clear run

Rounding the home turn, DON CORLEONE (S Snell) shifted ground outwards and bumped with REDOUTE’S STAR (D Pires) and forced REDOUTE’S STAR to shift wider on the track.

FANTA’S RETURN (J Cameron) was held up from the 200 metres.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BEAUCLOU (Trainer Charlie Goggin).

RACE 3 – SOUTHERN CROSS TELEVISION CLASS 4 HANDICAP  - 1400 METRES

                  *** Weights Raised 3.0 kg ***

EMPEROR NAPOLEON (G Ryan) was inspected at the barriers by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and the farrier and was subsequently re-plated on his off-hind leg.

EMPEROR NAPOLEON (G Ryan) and STATEVAIN (D Pires) were both a little slow into stride.

At approximately the 1100 metres WHISPERING WARRIOR (C Lindop) which was over-racing, had to be steadied off the heels of CORINDHAP (S Hamer A) which shifted ground inwards.

WHISPERING WARRIOR (C Lindop) laid in in the home straight.

CHIEF CITATION (S Gates) was fractious in the mounting yard and proved difficult to lead out on to the track.

When questioned, Jockey D Pires (STATEVAIN) stated that his instructions from Trainer Terry Roles were to lead and that he was of the opinion that the gelding may have placed his tongue over the bit during the race and then tired over the concluding stages.  A post-race veterinary inspection of STATEVAIN failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.  Trainer Roles reported that the horse may have “choked down” during the race.

RACE 4 – MARSH CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

As Jockey C Kingston was overweight, permission was granted for Jockey S Wynne to replace him on MATSONATION (Trainer Rowena Migliorini).  At a subsequent inquiry Jockey C Kingston was reprimanded under AR-120(b) for accepting a ride for which he was subsequently found to be overweight.

Caulfield trainer Tony Vasil remains confident his talented four-year-old Under The Bridge will make the trip to Tasmania for the AAMI Hobart Cup in a fortnight despite finishing unplaced in the Tauto Welter over 1720m at Flemington on Saturday.

Under The Bridge raced midfield and ran on fairly to finish sixth but less than two lengths from the winner.

“The Hobart Cup has always been on this horse’s agenda and his run on Saturday at Flemington was a lot better than it looks on paper,” Vasil said.

“He raced on the worst part of the track in the home straight and hasn’t finished all that far from the winner,” he said.

“He is a better horse at 2000m than 1700m and I know that 300m sounds like I’m splitting straws but he will be definitely suited to the 2100m of the Hobart Cup,” he said.

Vasil also has not discounted the possibility of a two-pronged attack with his lightly weighted Close Encounters still a chance to make the trip across Bass Strait.

While Under The Bridge is top weight with 57kg in the Hobart Cup, Close Encounter is well in with 51.5kg.

“Close Encounter is a rough chance of coming. He finished last at Sandown recently but we have to forget the run because he’s better than that and he’ll run next Saturday to determine whether or not he makes the trip to Tassie,” Vasil said.

Meanwhile SA trainer Tony McEvoy confirmed You Little Beaut a definite starter in the AAMI Hobart Cup following his encouraging second to Party Pie at Moonee Valley last Saturday week.

McEvoy also said his lightly raced Zabeel mare Zingo was still a chance to make the trip despite missing a race at Flemington last Saturday because of a leg problem.

“Zingo developed a leg infection and I had to treat it and that’s why she didn’t run in the Kensington Stakes on Saturday,” McEvoy said.

“She doesn’t particularly have to have another run to be a chance to run in the Hobart Cup,” he said.

Last season’s Tasmanian Horse of the Year Riley Redwing returned to something near his best to win the Ingham Jockey Club Cup over 2100m at Elwick on Sunday to signal his emergence as a definite AAMI Hobart Cup prospect.

The Royston Carr-trained gelding was having his fourth run back from a spell and after trailing the leader Speechmaker to the home turn the flashy chestnut eased off heels and powered home to score impressively.

“I was confident the horse was nearing his best but today was the test and he’s come through with flying colours,” Carr said.

“We’ll definitely head to the Hobart Cup and all being well he’ll also tackle the Launceston Cup,” he said.

Riley Redwing carried top weight of 58.5kg on Sunday and will have the luxury of 53kg in the AAMI Hobart Cup, as he did not incur a penalty from the handicapper for Sunday’s win.

However, the Dan O’Sullivan-trained Special Scene has incurred a 1.5kg penalty for winning the Gurner’s Lane Handicap over 2540m at Flemington on Saturday.

Special Scene was impressive in winning on Saturday carrying 53.5kg with apprentice Brady Cross in the saddle and with the penalty will line up in the AAMI Hobart Cup with only 52.5kg should O’Sullivan choose to accept.

First acceptances were taken for the AAMI Hobart Cup last Friday and 38 horses remain in contention.

The owners of JEAN LOUISE (Trainer John Luttrell) were incorrectly shown in the race-book and should have read:  Mrs K L Collins, Mr J C Collins, Mrs L Millhouse, and Mr J Millhouse.  A public announcement to this effect was made prior to the start of the race.

KING’S SCHOLAR (B McCoull) was a little slow into stride at the start.

PRINCESS DANCER (K Dodge) raced green in the back straight.

At the 600 metres, PRINCESS DANCER (K Dodge) laid in and bumped with EXCEED (D Oakford).

Racing in the home straight, JEAN LOUISE (D Pires) laid in resulting in its rider being unable to ride his mount out fully to the finish.

UZIGAL (S Snell) laid in in the home straight.

Jockey McCoull (KING’S SCHOLAR) stated that he was disappointed with the colt’s performance today.  A post-race veterinary inspection failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 2 – SKYY BLUE MAIDEN PLATE – 3YO & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS  -  DIVISION 1  1400 METRES

BILL’S REWARD (M Ball (a)) jumped out at the start.  As a result KAY TEE (D Oakford), BURNT BACK (P Michaelides) and MAGIC LAUGHTER (R Bradley) were all inconvenienced.

At approximately the 1000 metres, KAY TEE (D Oakford) shifted ground outwards and bumped with SONAR EXPRESS (K Dodge).

BILL’S REWARD (M Ball (a)) and BURNT BACK (P Michaelides) were inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages of the event.

At approximately the 750 metres MATTINGLY (B McCoull) shifted ground inwards marginally.  As a result the gelding momentarily inconvenienced NILE PRINCESS (D Pires).

Rounding the home turn, NILE PRINCESS (D Pires) when ridden out to obtain a clear run, over-reacted and shifted ground outwards more than necessary.  As a result BILL’S REWARD (M Ball (a)) was carried wider on the track.

At approximately the 250 metres, MAGIC LAUGHTER (R Bradley) shifted outwards.  As a result DARK EMBRACE (J Cameron) was carried wider on the track and bumped with DIPLOMATIC TERTIAN (J Borrett).

At the 200 metres, LEX LOCI (E Brennan (a)) laid out under pressure and momentarily inconvenienced BURNT BACK (P Michaelides).

MATTINGLY (B McCoull) was disappointed for a run when the gap closed between LEX LOCI (E Brennan (a)) and POSH AND PUSHY (D Yendall) over the concluding stages.

A swab sample was taken from the winner SONAR EXPRESS (Trainer Peter Luttrell).

RACE 3 – VANTAGE HOTEL GROUP MAIDEN PLATE – 3YO & UPWARDS –  DIVISION 2  SET WEIGHTS  -  1400 METRES

QUEEN OF DENMARK   (B McCoull) proved a little difficult to load into its barrier stall, which slightly delayed the start of this race.

At the start, NIGHT FIGHTER (J Cameron) jumped inwards and at the same time COOL ADDICTION (P Michaelides) jumped outwards resulting in MYSTIC MILLIE (T Atkin) becoming crowded.   COOL ADDICTION (P Michaelides) over-raced near the 1000 metres.

Approaching the 900 metres, BIG CHEESE (K Dodge) rolled outwards resulting in MELAMEE (D Pires) being taken wider on the track.

SUPER SCAY (S Hamer (a)) laid in over the concluding stages of the race.

QUEEN OF DENMARK (Brendon McCoull) cast a near side fore plate in running.

RACE 4 – PETER BAKOS MEMORIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES

FOREST PEAK (B McCoull) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages of the event.

Apprentice E Brennen (UNTIL SUNDOWN) pleaded guilty to under AR 137(a) careless riding in that at approximately the 200 metres, he allowed his mount to shift ground outwards when insufficiently clear of MORSONIQUE (S Hamer (a)) resulting in that horse being carried out on to NURSE SUZI (M Ball (a)) who lost its position and had to be checked.   Apprentice Brennen’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of two race meetings from midnight 30 January 2005 and expiring midnight 12 February 2005.

FOREST PEAK (B McCoull) laid out under pressure approaching the winning post.

RACE 5 – INGHAM JOCKEY CLUB CUP  (HANDICAP) – 2100 METRES

SPEECHMAKER (G Childs) and RAHIRI (J Cameron) bumped as the start was affected.

Racing to the 1600 metres, MAN IN BLACK (L Goodrick) and RILEY REDWING (S Maskiell) were inclined to over-race.

Approaching the 250 metres, RAHIRI (J Cameron) shifted wider on the track and bumped with BOMBAY BOY (S Snell).  BOMBAY BOY then shifted outwards and brushed with MAN IN BLACK (L Goodrick).

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race RILEY REDWING (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 6 – WREST POINT 1000 GUINEAS 3YO FILLIES – SET WEIGHTS – NO CLAIMS – LISTED 1600 METRES

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected NO LAUGHING MATTER prior to the start after the filly was kicked behind the barriers.  The filly was passed fit to take its place with the field.

PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER (M Ball (a)) made the turn at the 1200 metres awkwardly and shifted ground outwards.  As a result the filly carried GALLETA (J Holder) out resulting in MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull) and STRATHMORE MAID (J Cameron) being tightened and MADAM MASQUE (D Oakford) having to be checked off the heels of OCEANO (S Maskiell).

Shortly thereafter, NOTHIN’ LIKE MARY (K Sanderson) had to be steadied off the heels of GALLETA (J Holder) who was carried in momentarily by OCEANO (S Maskiell).

At approximately the 1000 metres, STRATHMORE MAID (J Cameron) laid out and carried NO LAUGHING MATTER (L Goodrick) wider on the track.

At about the 700 metres, WEASEL WAV (E Brennen (a)) rolled off the rail and bumped with OCEANO (S Maskiell).  Apprentice Brennen was shown the film and reminded of his obligations when allowing his mounts to shift ground in future.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MADAM MASQUE (Trainer John Luttrell) revealed the filly had been galloped on down the inside of her left hind leg.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race PETITE OISEAU (Trainer Mark Ganderton).

Following the running of this race, Jockey K Sanderson was examined by the Club’s medical officer and subsequently stood down from his remaining riding engagements due to tachycardia.  Stewards advised Jockey K Sanderson that he must produce a medical certificate before he resumes riding in trackwork, official trials or races.

RACE 7 – MOORILLA HOBART GUINEAS – 3YO – SET WEIGHTS – NO CLAIMS – LISTED  1600 METRES

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected SHINING STORM prior to the start and passed the gelding fit to take its place with the field.

The start of this race was delayed when VISCOUNT CAMERON (D Pires) refused to go to the barriers and as a result the Clerk of the Course had to return to the home turn and lead the gelding to the barriers.

At about the 1400 metres, SHINING STORM (L Nolen) laid in.

At about the 400 metres, TWICE THE VALUE (S Snell) steadied off the heels of the tiring YOMEE (C Kingston).  As a result STUYVESANT (S Maskiell) had to check out wider to avoid heels.

SHINING STORM (L Nolen) shifted ground outwards abruptly at the 200 metres resulting in YOMEE (C Kingston) being carried out and bumping with TWICE THE VALUE (S Snell).  Jockey Nolen stated he was caught unawares as the horse normally lays in.  As a result Jockey Nolen had to stop riding and straighten his mount.

STUYVESANT (S Maskiell) shifted in abruptly and at approximately the 100 metres despite the efforts of its rider and

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Simon Snell the rider of the fifth placed horse TWICE THE VALUE, viewed the films with the intention of lodging a protest.  After viewing the films, Jockey Snell declined to do so and correct weight was declared.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SHINING STORM (Trainer Peter Moody) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race JAY KAY BEE (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 9 – GET YOUR HEART PUMPING AT THE TOTE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

The race-book incorrectly showed IRISH JOKER (Trainer Darrel Carr) as winning on 5 December 2004 when in fact, the gelding had been subsequently disqualified from its event.

At the start ANDRE THE GIANT (M Ball (a)) jumped outwards as LULUANNA (S Maskiell) jumped in resulting in INASNIP (S Snell) and CELTIC FLING (D Yendall) being crowded.  As a result, CELTIC FLING lost some ground.

At about the 900 metres, Jockey S Maskiell (LULUANNA) shifted ground inwards to avoid the heels of INASNIP (S Snell) who was racing forward and to his outside and in doing so shifted in abruptly and bumped with LIGHT SQUALL (J Borrett).  As a result LIGHT SQUALL threw its head in the air, shifted out and bumped with LULUANNA (S Maskiell).  No direct action was taken against any one rider as Stewards believe INASNIP was marginally clear when shifting ground inwards. However, LULUANNA commenced to over-race at that point and had to be steadied in over the heels of INASNIP.

IRISH JOKER (C Kingston) was placed awkwardly on the heels of CHIEF CITATION (S Tsaikos) approaching the 600 metres.

At approximately the 100 metres, CORINDHAP (S Hamer (a)) laid in, placing its rider at a disadvantage.

STRATHMORE LUCK (E Brennen (a)) laid in in the home straight.

Over the concluding stages, INASNIP (S Snell) had to be momentarily steadied by its rider when HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) laid in.
