GENERAL

Jockey Ron Aitken was reprimanded under AR-85(b) for failing to fulfill his riding engagement on MADAM MASQUE in Race 3 at today’s race meeting.  In not taking more severe action, Stewards took into account that Jockey Aitken was on the plane at the time scratchings were announced and he was of the belief that the filly had not gained a start being the second emergency as he had heard nothing from the trainer or his manager.

Trainer David Brunton reported to Stewards that following the TRC’s race meeting on 17 October, MASSIVE BUILD UP, which had raced in Race 3, was found to have bled en route to his stables.  The gelding will be stood down under the provisions of AR-53A for a period of three months.

Addendum to TRC – Sunday, 17 October - Race  5 - Wrest Point Conference & Banquets Class 1 Handicap – 1080 Metres

It was incorrectly stated in the Stewards report that on return to scale Jockey S Maskiell (NO LAUGHING MATTER) advised that his horse slipped rounding the home turn, when in fact, NO LAUGHING MATTER slipped at the 600 metre mark.

Adjourned Inquiry From Race  8 - Wrest Point Revolving Restaurant Class 2 Handicap - 1550 Metres – Sunday, 17 October 2004

Stewards today inquired into the reasons why VATICAN LASS (S Gates) fell shortly after the start.  Apprentice M Ball (ASFAHAN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding AR-137(a) in that at approximately the 1500 metre mark, he rode his mount inwards when insufficiently clear.  As a result DESIGN ACADEMY (D Parish) was tightened for racing room and had to be checked.  ASFAHAN then continued in and severely checked VATICAN LASS (S Gates) causing that horse to fall.  It was also established during the inquiry that there was movement from the inside by WINEBERRY (NZ) (R Bradley) out on to PRINCESS AVENGER (J Borrett) out on to OUR DASHING DANE (B McCoull) who in turn bumped with VATICAN LASS which had minimal bearing on the incident.  Apprentice Ball’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of two race meetings in Tasmania commencing at midnight 24 October 2004 and to expire at midnight on Tuesday, 2 November 2004.

TRACK:   GOOD
WEATHER:   FINE
RAIL:       TRUE

A deputation of stewards and jockeys undertook an inspection of the track prior to the start of the first race as there was concern about an area of track at the 1650 metre mark and again at the 1500 metre mark.   As a result the track in this area was mowed and the grass clippings were removed from the area in question.

RACE  1 - WREST POINT PIER ONE RESTAURANT & BAR CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1550 METRES

The start of this race was delayed slightly when HEARTLESS (B McCoull) reared on several occasions whilst being loaded into the barriers.

HEARTLESS (B McCoull) raced green throughout, then racing down the back straight, the gelding over-raced, then despite the efforts of its rider, HEARTLESS hung out between the 500  metre mark and the 300 metre mark.

Rounding the home turn at the 300 metre mark, SCOTTISH SYMBOL (M Ball A) was held up behind AROMA ROYALE (D Pires) which had rolled in marginally away from MATANE (K Dodge) resulting in SCOTTISH SYMBOL brushing the running rail.

Stewards questioned Jockey Parish in regard to the tactics employed on ON FLIGHT (NZ) today.  Jockey Parish stated that it was her intention to obtain a break mid-race on the gelding and make the other runners have to chase.  These tactics were employed due to the gelding being one-paced, however, Jockey Parish stated that her run had ended by the time she got to the 400 metre mark.  Stewards noted her explanation.

RACE  2 - WREST POINT FIVE STAR PREMIUM SUITE CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1920 METRES

LORRELEE (K Boxhall A) threw its head in the air shortly after the start and then over‑raced in the early stages.

CHARZARD (D Pires) was held up in the home straight before switching wider on the track to obtain a clear run.

Stewards spoke to Jockey Snell (ISLAND QUEST) in regard to him failing to ride his mount out with the whip over the concluding stages.  Jockey Snell stated that the horse’s run had peaked and he wasn’t finding any more under the whip but he continued to ride the gelding out hands and heels.  Stewards noted his explanation.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the riding tactics employed today on YES NO YES (M Morris A) and LORRELEE (K Boxhall A).  Stewards adjourned an inquiry with Apprentice K Boxhall until such time as her Master, Mr Leon Wells, is available to be present with her.  Stewards spoke to Apprentice M Morris and Trainer D Brunton.  Apprentice Morris stated that although he had tried on several occasions to steady the gelding running past the 1400 metre mark he was unable to restrain the horse and once LORRELEE had moved to his outside, the horse began to over-race.  Trainer Brunton was of the opinion that maybe it was an error for Apprentice Morris to ride the horse out of the barriers but he was of the opinion that Apprentice Morris had tried to restrain his mount and had done everything possible.  Stewards noted their explanations.

FIREBALL JIMMY (Trainer Chris Crook) was a late scratching at 1.38 pm by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice when the horse was found to have sustained trauma to the left hip in the float en route to the race track.  Trainer Mrs Crook was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered prior to the FIREBALL JIMMY’s next race start.

After jumping with the field, Jockey D Pires restrained MELAMEE to take a position closer to the rail.

KAY TEE (S Brazil) was fractious and attempted to rear in the barriers on several occasions and was then slow into stride.  Stewards advised Trainer Mr Douglas Brazendale that KAY TEE has been stood down until the colt can trial or jump-out to Stewards’ satisfaction.

BACK AT TWO (S Snell) was tightened at the start when MISS SEVEN OF NINE (J Borrett) jumped inwards and MILITARY MAN (K Bandy) jumped outwards.

Rounding the 500 metre turn, MILITARY MAN (K Bandy) hung out and as a result carried MISS SEVEN OF NINE (J Borrett) wider on the track.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey B McCoull, rider of the second placegetter, RED FOR DANGER, requested to view the film in order to make a decision on lodging a protest.  After viewing the film Jockey McCoull subsequently lodged an objection against WEASEL WAV (D Pires) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding stages.  After viewing the official patrol videos, hearing the evidence from all parties and from the Stewards own observations, Stewards dismissed the protest and the Judge’s placings stood.  Stewards believe that the initial movement was from RED FOR DANGER which shifted in brushing with WEASEL WAV who in turn shifted out and bumped with RED FOR DANGER.  Stewards dismissed the objection as they were not convinced the interference suffered by RED FOR DANGER was sufficient to warrant amending the Judge’s placings.

On return to scale Jockey S Maskiell (NO LAUGHING MATTER) stated that his horse slipped rounding the home turn.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race WEASEL WAV (Trainer John Luttrell).

GENERAL

Stewards acceded to a request by Trainer Peter Luttrell to replace the indisposed Apprentice D Robinson with senior jockeys as Trainer Luttrell believed they would be more suited to his horses than the remaining apprentices that were available. After taking evidence from Jockey Oakford and Trainer Mrs P Quarrell, Stewards believe there was a lack of communication between both parties which lead to Jockey Oakford believing that he no longer held an engagement to ride BIONIC BOY. Stewards reminded both parties that in future these matters should be brought before Stewards to be determined. Stewards questioned Jockeys D Pires (THE PASTORALIST), S Maskiell (STARBIZ) and B McCoull (CHIEMSEE) into an incident at approximately the 1300 metre mark when THE PASTORALIST lost its position when racing tight between runners.  Jockey Pires stated that he jumped on equal terms and approaching the 1300 metre mark they were racing 6 abreast across the track when he believes he received pressure from his outside and had to check his mount.  Jockey Maskiell (STARBIZ) stated at that point CHIEMSEE (B McCoull) was racing to his outside and improving at that stage and shifted in marginally tightening his mount.  As Stewards were unable to apportion the blame to any one rider riders were advised concerned to ensure that they are fully clear when they commence to shift ground in future.

THE BYNG BUNYIP (J Borrett) had to steady her mount at the 1200 metre mark when she was tightened for room inside CHIEMSEE (B McCoull).

Approaching the 100 metre mark TAINUI STAR (S Hamer (a)) hung in crowding THE BYNG BUNYIP (J Borrett) in behind TERCENTENARY (L Goodrick), resulting in THE BYNG BUNYIP not being able to obtain a clear run over the concluding stages.

Over the concluding stages THE BYNG BUNYIP (J Borrett) was held up for a clear run by runners in front.

Jockey S Maskiell (STARBIZ) reported at scale that his saddle slipped backwards shortly after the start placing him at a disadvantage.

On return to scale, it was noted that THE BYNG BUNYIP (J Borrett) had blood in its mouth.  A post-race Veterinary examination revealed ulcerated gums.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MIMOSA WILLOW (Trainer P Geeves).

RACE 7 – HARVEY WORLD TRAVEL CLASS 4  HANDICAP–1600 METRES

The start of this race was delayed for 1 minute when COALFIELDS (S Maskiell) bucked and dislodged the rider during the preliminary.  COALFIELDS then galloped down the home straight and jumped the outside course proper fence into the carpark before being recaptured. COALFIELDS (Trainer G Blacker) was declared a late scratching at 4.40 pm by order of Stewards.  Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on COALFIELDS (10/9) prior to 4.40 pm to be refunded in full.  Bets made on win and place made prior to the withdrawal of COALFIELDS are to be paid on the face value of the ticket less forty five cents in the dollar for the win, 25 cents in the dollar for the place.  Jockey Maskiell was examined by the Ambulance Officers and declared fit to fulfill his remaining riding engagements.

AARBERG (T Atkin) and RAISE THE ARK (D Robinson (a)) were slow to muster early speed.

NUVOLARI (J Borrett) layed in under pressure over the concluding stages.

Jockey B McCoull reported at scale that ALLUSIONS hung out in the latter stages of the race.  A post-race Veterinary examination of ALLUSIONS (Trainer B Campbell) revealed this gelding to have pulled up sore in the off fore.  Trainer Campbell was advised that he must produce a Veterinary Certificate of soundness prior to this gelding’s next official race or barrier trial start.

A post-race Veterinary examination of COALFIELDS (Trainer G Blacker) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race NUVOLARI (Trainer W Ryan).

RACE 8 – ESK VALUATION GROUP  CLASS 6 HANDICAP–1200 METRES

The start of this race was delayed for 2 minutes due to race 6 at Cootamundra running behind time.

On return to scale Jockey Borrett (SHIMOUSE) explained that she was held up for a clear run from approximately the 500 metre mark to the latter part of the home straight.

A post-race Veterinary examination of FLYING DIVA (Trainer N Richardson) revealed this mare to be lame in the near fore.  Trainer Richardson was advised that he must produce a Veterinary Certificate prior to this gelding’s next official race or barrier trials start.

RACE 9 – MONTILE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES

At the start FLORIAN (S Snell) jumped out and brushed with FASIG (L Goodrick) who in turn made contact with SPINIFEX FAIRY (D Sparks), shortly after STIHLMACK DAWN (S Maskiell) shifted in and bumped heavily with FLORIAN and continued on an inward passage carrying FLORIAN inwards towards the rail.  Stewards adjourned an inquiry into this incident at a time to be fixed.  Stewards will be speaking with Jockey S Maskiell for leaving the course without obtaining a clearance from the Stewards.

FLORIAN (S Snell) had a tendency to over-race in the middle stages of the event.

Entering the home straight DANDERA (J Borrett) shifted out and bumped with STIHLMACK DAWN (S Maskiell) carrying that mare a little wider on the track.

Racing towards the 400 metre mark GENWINA (M Morris a)) and LADY OF NEVER (D Robinson  (a)) layed on each other for a number of strides.

Shortly after straightening FLORIAN (S Snell) attempted a run between GENWINA (M Morris (a)) and LADY OF NEVER (D Robinson (a)) where in the opinion of Stewards there was insufficient room, resulting in FLORIAN appearing to clip heels and blunder.  Jockey Snell was shown the official footage of the incident and advised to ensure there is sufficient room when attempting to take runs in future.

Over the concluding stages GENWINA shifted up the track carrying LADY OF NEVER (D Robinson (a)) a little wider.

Over the concluding stages FLORIAN (S Snell) shifted ground up the track under pressure.

Stewards spoke to Trainer B Dalco in relation to the track manners of GENWINA (M Morris (a)) in that this mare had to be lead to the barriers riderless.  Stewards placed a warning on the horse after Trainer B Dalco gave an undertaking that he would remedy the horse’s race day manners.

Stewards acceded to Trainer T Roles’ request to replace Apprentice J Geard with senior riders in races 5, 6 and 7 (see rider change box).

Jockey J Nevin was fined the sum of $100 under AR 120 (b) for failing to make the weight on SAFE HAVEN in race 2 and SHEERALABAR in race 3 at today’s meeting.

Stewards will be speaking with Apprentice B Bamford and his master in relation to Apprentice Bamford accepting a ride on LORRELEE (Trainer C Jordan) at today’s meeting and then being unable to fulfill his engagement.

Trainer R Carr advised Stewards that Trainer K Dixon would be taking responsibility for his runners at today’s meeting.

Trainer T Roles reported to Stewards that following the disappointing performance of PENTIME at Elwick on Sunday 26th September, a subsequent blood sample revealed that PENTIME was suffering from a viral infection.

 RACE  1 - PAUL CHRISTIAN MAIDEN PLATE 3-Y-O & UPWARDS  – SET WEIGHTS – 1550 METRES

IGOLIDE (P Michaelides) was slow to muster early speed.

ROLY KEN (D Pires) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

Rounding the turn at the 1300 metre mark, AVOIDANCE (D Robinson A) shifted inwards towards the rail and as a result BLACKBERRY PIE (S Maskiell) and VAL’S DELIGHT (D Oakford) were both inconvenienced.  Apprentice Robinson was shown the film and advised that he is to take far greater care in future when shifting ground.

Upon pulling up, Jockey P Michaelides (IGOLIDE) was dislodged by his mount at approximately the 1200 metre mark.  Jockey Michaelides was examined by the on-course ambulance officers and was found to have sustained a leg injury and was subsequently  transported to hospital for precautionary observation and x-rays.  Stewards advised Jockey Michaelides that he is to present a medical certificate declaring him fit to ride before he resumes riding in track-work, trials or races.  Due to these circumstances, Jockey Michaelides was unable to weigh in and acting under AR-142, Stewards declared correct weight.

Stewards questioned Jockey S Maskiell in regard to the apparent disappointing performance of BLACKBERRY PIE, the 4 / 9 favourite.  Jockey Maskiell stated that the mare hung out badly and gave him great difficulty during the race.    When questioned, Trainer Crook stated that the mare had worked her lead-up to today’s race in the same bit she wore in today’s race and she was unable to explain the mare’s manners today.  Stewards noted her comments.  A post-race veterinary examination of BLACKBERRY PIE revealed the mare to have bruising to the left cheek

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race  KITA RYOKAN (Trainer Chris Crook).

RACE  2 - TONY BUTTERWORTH MAIDEN PLATE 3-Y-O & UPWARDS  – SET WEIGHTS – 1080 METRES

The race book incorrectly showed PLUSH PRINCE as being a horse when in fact PLUSH PRINCE is a gelding.

Stewards permitted IAM IAM to race in owner Mr Peter Hookway’s second set of colours due to the original colours being required in Victoria for the weekend.  A public announcement was made to this effect.

PLUSH PRINCE (D Parish) underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to race after the gelding reared and fell over in the parade ring prior to the race.

The start of this race was delayed approximately three minutes due to PLUSH PRINCE dislodging its rider on route to the barriers.  Jockey Parish was examined by the on‑course ambulance officers who passed her fit to take her ride in this race.

Trainer R Carr was advised that PLUSH PRINCE has been stood down from racing until the gelding can pass a trial to Stewards’ satisfaction.

HANKS GENTLEMAN (R Bradley), PLUSH PRINCE (D Parish) and IAM IAM (M Morris A) were all slow to begin.

Shortly after leaving the 600 metre mark, FLORIAN (S Snell) was awkwardly placed on the heels of WESTERN CHEER (J Borrett) for a number of strides.

PERFECT VISA (S Maskiell) was held up momentarily at approximately the 200 metre mark when attempting a run to the inside of NIGHT FIGHTER (K Bandy).

ARABIAN PRIDE (D Pires) laid in over the concluding stages.

Stewards inquired into an incident at incident at approximately the 900 metre mark when PLUSH PRINCE lost its racing position.  Stewards established that PLUSH PRINCE, after beginning slowly and racing greenly, improved to the inside of CHIEMSEE to obtain a tight run.  CHIEMSEE then shifted ground inwards when REILLY JANE, which was racing to its outside, shifted in and away from RED RIVAL (M Ball A).  As a result PLUSH PRINCE was checked.  As Stewards could not apportion blame to any one rider and considering the racing manners of PLUSH PRINCE and REILLY JANE, Stewards took no further action other than to remind all riders that they must give each other the room to which they are entitled.

On return to scale, Jockey B McCoull (CHIEMSEE) reported that his saddle slipped badly shortly after the start, placing him at a disadvantage thereafter.

Jockey S Maskiell reported at scale that he accidentally dropped his whip whilst rounding the home turn.

Stewards questioned Trainer N Richardson in regard to the apparent disappointing performance of PERFECT VISTA in today’s event.  Trainer Richardson stated that the mare had worked well leading up to today’s event and he expected a forward showing and could offer no explanations for PERFECT VISTA’s performance today.  A post-race veterinary examination of PERFECT VISTA failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of REILLY JANE revealed the mare to have blood in its mouth after biting its tongue.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race REILLY JANE (Trainer Mark Ganderton).

RACE  3 - ARTIE FORD SUPERVOBIS   3-Y-O  MAIDEN PLATE SET WEIGHTS – 1080 METRES

SQUIMAT (S Snell) was a fraction slow to begin.

Approaching the 600 metre mark SQUIMAT (S Snell) had to be restrained off the heels of MAXLIN STAR (M Ball A) and as a result shifted out and contacted with HIDDEN FACE (D Pires).

SQUIMAT (S Snell) and HIDDEN FACE (D Pires) both hung in under pressure in the home straight.

On return to scale, Jockey S Snell (SQUIMAT) reported that his mount raced greenly throughout this event.

RACE  4 - SHIRLEY BAILEY FILLIES & MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1310 METRES

Correct weight for this event was delayed as Stewards wished to view the film to determine that all runners were afforded a fair start.  After viewing the official video, Stewards were satisfied that a fair start was given and correct weight was declared.

SUGAR BEBE (C Kingston) was fractious in the barriers just prior to jumping.

FASIG (K Bandy), STARRED (B McCoull) and SUGAR BEBE (C Kingston) were all a little slow to begin.

STARRED (B McCoull) was held up for a clear run from approximately the 500 metres until well into the home straight.

In the run to the finish SPECTOGRAPH (S Maskiell) shifted ground inwards under pressure, carrying SWAMP BREEZE (J Borrett) in on to FASIG (K Bandy).

Following the running of this race, the track was up-graded from SLOW to DEAD at 2.48 pm

RACE  5 - CHEAPER FURNITURE HANDICAP – 1080 METRES

Correct weight for this event was delayed due to Apprentice M Morris (ORIENTAL WINGS) weighing in 900 grams under his declared weight.  After calling for the bridle in accordance with AR-143, correct weight was declared.  At a subsequent inquiry, after taking evidence from Apprentice Morris and Clerk of the Scales, Mr C White in the presence of Trainer Mr David Brunton, the Master of Apprentice Morris, it could not be determined whether or not apprentice Morris had weighed out at the correct weight, however, both apprentice Morris and Mr White were advised they are to ensure at all times they are extremely diligent with regard to matters of this kind.

As the start was affected, LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) (S Snell) jumped out and at the same time GOODNIK (D Parish) jumped in and as a result MASTER SONAR (D Pires) who was between the two, was tightened for room.

MATRIX HUNTER (C Kingston) was slow to begin.

MASTER SONAR hung in in the home straight.

Stewards inquired into an incident at the 950 metre mark when CANDLE IN THE WIND (J Borrett) appeared to be checked.  After inquiry, Stewards found Apprentice Morris guilty of a charge under AR-137 (a), the careless riding being that at approximately the 950 metre mark, he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of GOODNIK (D Parish) resulting in that gelding being carried inwards crowding LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) (S Snell) in on to BARKER (D Robinson A) who in turn shifted in and tightened CANDLE IN THE WIND.  As a result CANDLE IN THE WIND struck the running rail and was checked by its rider. Stewards suspended Apprentice Morris’ licence to ride in races for a period covered by one race meeting in Tasmania to commence at midnight today and expire at midnight on Sunday, 5 September 2004.  In arriving at their decision, Stewards took into account Apprentice Morris’ relative inexperience, however, advised him if he were to come before them in the near future, harsher action may be taken.

RACE 6 -  STEVE BAILEY CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1310 METRES

MATANE (D Robinson A) pulled hard in the middle stages of the race.

At approximately the 200 metre mark, MAN IN BLACK (D Pires) shifted in under pressure and as a result LADONIS (M Ball A) which was attempting a run to the inside of that gelding had to switch out and across the heels of MAN IN BLACK to obtain a clear run.  It was noted that Jockey D Pires had taken immediate corrective action to straighten his mount.

Jockey K Bandy was reprimanded under AR-137(a) careless riding, in that rounding the home turn when shifting out to obtain a clear run, he buffeted with MIM MIMP (B McCoull) for some distance and as a result that gelding became unbalanced.

RACE  7 - BGA INSURANCE BROKERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1080 METRES

As the start was affected, NORMAN FLYER (S Brazil) jumped outwards and as a result contacted with BROWNEYED BOY (J Nevin) resulting in that gelding losing its position.

IMAGE CONSCIOUS (K Bandy) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.

Approaching the 600 metre mark IMAGE CONSCIOUS (K Bandy) which was over‑racing, got its head up in the air and had to be restrained off the heels of BROWNEYED BOY (J Nevin).

At approximately the 600 metre mark, MILITIA (D Pires) was momentarily inconvenienced when tightened by runners on the outside.

At approximately the 200 metre mark, ROYAL RELAY (S Snell) was momentarily held up for a short distance when racing to the inside of EAST WEST (K Dodge) who had shifted ground inwards slightly.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race  BROWNEYED BOY (Trainer John Blacker)

Trainer Mr T M Roles advised Stewards that Trainer Mrs Christine Crook will be acting Master of his apprentice, Miss Jo Geard.
