The Peter Moody-trained Zacielo will return to Tasmania in a quest of snaring the AAMI Hobart-Launceston Cups double.

Despite suffering minor injuries in a mishap when being loaded onto an aircraft for his return to Victoria after winning the AAMI Hobart Cup last week, the four-year-old Zabeel gelding has thrived.

Moody confirmed this morning that Zacielo will be a final acceptor for the $200,000 Group 3 race over 2400m next Wednesday (February 25).

"I worked the horse early this morning and he worked very strongly. In fact, I'd say it's the best he's worked this preparation so he's definitely heading back to Tassie," Moody said.

"The Hobart Cup was his first try over the 2400m so I would expect he will have benefited from that run from a Launceston Cup perspective.

"The horse is booked on the boat to come to Tassie early next week and Craig Newitt will ride the horse," he said.

Zacielo was very impressive in winning the AAMI Hobart Cup from Dream Quest and Liquid Lunch but rises dramatically in weight from 52.5kg to 55kg for the AAMI Launceston Cup.

"It is a decent weight rise but he can only improve on what he's done so far this preparation and given the depth of the field I'm confident the extra weight won't impede his chances," Moody said.

If Zacielo wins the AAMI Launceston Cup he will become the first interstate-trained and owned horse to complete the major cups double in living memory.

Victory for the Zabeel gelding also would etch teenage Tasmanian jockey Craig Newitt into the record books as the only jockey to ride the winner of all three major cups in the same year.

Newitt partnered Chardere to win the Devonport Cup on January 7 and he guided Zacielo to victory in last week's AAMI Hobart Cup.

Lunchtime Legend Races into Launceston Cup Contention

Former Queenslander Lunchtime Legend staked his claim as a serious AAMI Launceston Cup prospect after he scored an impressive win in the weight-for-age St Leger (2100m) in Launceston on Sunday.

Lunchtime Legend had been performing well over shorter distances without winning, but found the longer journey of the St Leger to his liking, coming from well back in the field to overpower his rivals and score a convincing win over Jones and Almost Spring.

The John Blacker-trained seven-year-old arrived from Queensland last year with a reputation as a handy sprinter-miler with wins varying in distances from 1200m to 1600m.

Blacker opted for a first-up tilt at the Newmarket Handicap in Launceston in November, but the gelding was outclassed. However, his subsequent form in top company was encouraging.

Lunchtime Legend gave the impression he was looking for more ground when he flashed home in races over 1600m.

The gelding is handicapped to carry only 51kg in the AAMI Launceston Cup, a drop of seven kilograms on the weight he carried to victory in the St Leger with jockey Brendon McCoull in the saddle.

Lunchtime Legend's connections are now faced with the dilemma of finding a suitable rider who can ride at that weight (51kg) in the AAMI Launceston Cup.

Dream Quest a Top Hope in Launceston Cup

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/23888--sp-1376020835.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Trainer Barry Campbell has declared his quality four-year-old Dream Quest is ready to take on all comers in next week's... size=small}
Trainer Barry Campbell has declared his quality four-year-old Dream Quest is ready to take on all comers in next week's $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m) at Mowbray.

Dream Quest finished a gallant second to Zacielo in last week's AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) and according to Campbell, last season's Tasmanian Horse of the Year is primed to go one better in the AAMI Launceston Cup.

"Dream Quest has done an absolute treat since the Hobart Cup and I don't really care what comes from interstate, my horse is ready to give them a run for their money," Campbell said.

"Anyone who has watched the Hobart Cup would have seen clearly that my horse was the run of the race and all he has to do is draw a half-decent barrier in the Launceston Cup to be the one to beat.

"He was never better than three-wide in the Hobart Cup and when you consider St. Andrews had a dream run and was unable to run my horse down, it amazes me that everyone is saying St. Andrews was the gun run in the race outside of the winner.

"My horse has derived a lot of benefit from the Hobart Cup run and if there are no hiccups he'll be hard to beat in the Launceston Cup," he said.

Dream Quest lugged 54.5kg in Hobart and has the same weight in the AAMI Launceston Cup on February 25, while Zacielo will have to carry 55kg, which includes a 1.5kg penalty for winning the AAMI Hobart Cup.

There has been speculation that Zacielo would not return to Tasmania to try and capture the cups double. The horse suffered minor injuries when he became fractious while being loaded onto the aircraft for the return trip to Melbourne.

Zacielo had to be transported back to Victoria by sea, but the four-year-old Zabeel gelding's trainer Peter Moody has not discounted sending his rising star back to Tasmania next week.

"The horse had to be treated with antibiotics for the abrasions he suffered in the mishap, but he travelled super on the boat trip and when he arrived at my stables you would never have known he'd been through a bit of an ordeal," Moody said.

"The day after he won the Hobart Cup he was no chance of going back for the Launceston Cup, but I'm more open minded about it now and I'll leave it right up until final acceptance time (February 19) before making the decision.

"He hasn't had a saddle on him since the Hobart Cup, but I'll do a bit of work with him on Wednesday and Thursday to see how he comes up, although he will have to be right on top of his game to go back for the Launceston Cup," he said.

SANCHEZ (D Keating A) was a little slow into stride.

AVENGEFUL (S Maskiell) pulled hard in the middle stages of the event.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, EMPEROR NAPOLEON (G Millard) threw its head up and raced ungenerously for a short distance when placed between AVENGEFUL (S Maskiell) and CHARZARD (D Pires) and as a consequence this gelding lost some ground.  Jockey Millard reported at scale that his horse was reluctant to maintain its position when placed between runners at this point in the race.

EMPEROR NAPOLEON (G Millard) had a tendency to lay in throughout in the straight and raced a little awkwardly over the concluding stages of the event, resulting in Jockey Millard having to stop and straighten his mount on several occasions.

MAN IN A RUSH (S Snell) shifted ground outwards over the concluding stages.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MAN IN A RUSH (Trainer Winston Pilgrim).

RACE 2 – CADBURY DAIRY MILK MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 13-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1600 METRES 10 RUNNERS

SITTING DUCK (M Pegus) and ROLY KEN (D Taggart) were both slow into stride.

ROLY KEN (D Taggart) over-raced in the early stages and thereafter at about the 1000 metres, commenced to over-race again when being restrained by its rider, when the pace slowed in front.  At the same time THE SCOUSE DEVIL (K Dodge) shifted ground inwards.   As a result ROLY KEN clipped the heels of THE SCOUSE DEVIL and blundered.

THE SCOUSE DEVIL (K Dodge) pulled hard in the early and middle stages of this event.

LA BASSE (D Keating A) also had a tendency to over-race in the middle stages of the event.

It was noticed following the running of this race, that THE SCOUSE DEVIL (Trainer Royston Carr) had cast its off-hind plate in running.

At about the 500 metre mark, AROMA ROYALE (D Pires) when shifting out to obtain a clear run, brushed with COOL INFLATION (W Davis).

A post race veterinary inspection of LEICA FRANK (Trainer Barry Goodrick) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with this gelding.

A post race veterinary inspection of ROLY KEN (Trainer John Luttrell) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with this gelding

A post-race veterinary inspection of COOL INFLATION (Trainer Leon Wells) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with this mare

RACE 3 – CADBURY ROSES MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2 3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1600 METRES 11 RUNNERS

FILL LIFE WITH JOY (J Borrett) proved a little fractious after being loaded into its barrier stall.

RAMASQUE (W Davis) jumped in at the start and contacted with US ONLY (C Kingston).  At the same time HAPPY FREEDOM (S Maskiell) jumped awkwardly and outwards at the start, unbalancing Jockey Maskiell.  As a result US ONLY (C Kingston) was a little slow into stride.

THE DEVIL’S TATOO (B McCoull) pulled hard in the early stages and was awkwardly placed to the inside of WOEWODIN (J Holder) at about the 1400 metre mark.

Approaching the home turn, FILL LIFE WITH JOY (J Borrett) rolled in marginally and momentarily tightened MANTLE TALK (K Bandy).

Shortly after straightening, RUBINEA (G Millard) and MANTLE TALK (K Bandy) came together and brushed for a number of strides.

MANTLE TALK (K Bandy) laid in throughout in the straight.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DURRENMATT (Trainer Terence Evans) revealed this gelding to have a small haematoma on the left flank/thigh.

A post-race veterinary inspection of RUBINEA (Trainer John Blacker) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with this mare

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race THE DEVIL’S TATOO (Trainer David Brunton).

RACE 4 – CADBURY LUXURY FLAKE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1400 METRES  -  10 RUNNERS

Jockey J Holder (REVECHE) was fined $25 under AR-175(k) for negligence in that he presented himself in the mounting yard for his ride on this filly in the incorrect colours.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockeys K Bandy, the rider of the second place getter ACCESS POINT and Jockey R Bradley, the rider of the third place getter LORD OF THE TURF, asked to review the video with a view to lodging a protest.  After viewing the official patrol videos, Jockeys Bandy and Bradley proceeded and both lodged protests against OLD EUGOWRA (B McCoull) being declared the winner by the Judge, on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight.  After hearing the evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official patrol films the protest was dismissed, the Judge’s placings stood and correct weight was announced.  It was established that approaching the 150 metre mark, OLD EUGOWRA (B McCoull) who was laying in at the time, shifted inwards and carried LORD OF THE TURF (R Bradley) inwards.  Thereafter OLD EUGOWRA continued to lay in but maintained its running position relative to the inside running rail.  Thereafter over the concluding stages, ACCESS POINT (K Bandy) rolled out marginally and OLD EUGOWRA (B McCoull) rolled in marginally without making contact.  In the circumstances, Stewards advised both Jockeys Bradley and Bandy that their protests bordered on what would be considered frivolous.

Jockey R Handy was questioned regarding her riding instructions for ROSEWOOD RIVERS in today’s event.  She stated that it was her intention to get cover early in the event but due to this horse beginning very well, she was unable to do so and further stated that she was unable to restrain her mount in the middle stages.  Stewards noted her explanation.

The start of this race was delayed approximately two minutes when HOT SHOE (L Goodrick) backed into the inside running rail en route to the barriers just prior to the crossing at about the 1800 metre mark which necessitated some repair to the section of running rail by the Club’s ground staff.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey W Davis (STUYVESANT) the fifth place getter, asked to review the video with a view to lodging a protest.  After viewing the official patrol video, Jockey Davis proceeded and lodged a protest against PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER (B McCoull) being declared the fourth place getter by the Judge, on the grounds of alleged interference from the 300 metre mark to the winning post.   After hearing the evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official patrol films the protest was dismissed, the Judge’s placings stood and correct weight was announced.  It was established that on straightening, PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER shifted in slightly and brushed with STUYVESANT.  Thereafter, PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER, who was laying in, maintained its running position relative to the inside running rail.  At about the 150 metre mark, PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER and STUYVESANT came together when both horses shifted ground slightly.

Pre-race blood swabs were taken from all runners in this event.

The start of this race was delayed one to two minutes due to SOVEREIGN CLAUSE (S Snell) having to undergo a veterinary inspection.  SOVEREIGN CLAUSE was subsequently passed fit to take its place with the field.  A public announcement to this effect was made prior to the start of the race.

SQUANDERMANIA (P Michaelides) was slow away at the start.

UMA KING (S Maskiell) clipped the heels of BRAINPOWER (D Taggart) approaching the 1400 metre mark and blundered.  As a result of this incident, WIKKI WAWA (C Kingston) racing to the inside of UMA KING was inconvenienced.

Stewards granted permission for VENUS A GO GO to race fitted with pacifiers.

Jockey B McCoull, the rider of MYRAYOV, reported at scale that this mare dropped its head as the gates were released and as a result he was a little slow away and as a consequence of being slow away, he was unable to ride to instructions which were to race forward.

On returning to scale, Apprentice D Keating (SILVER LASER) reported that he believed this mare may have choked down in running.

A post-race veterinary inspection of RANCHERIE failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the mare.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SILVER LASER failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the mare.

A post-race veterinary inspection of VENUS A GO GO (Trainer Ian Hay) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the mare.

RACE 8 – SCHWEPPES AQUAVETA CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1200 METRES  -  15 RUNNERS

At approximately the 500 metre mark, BACHI (W Davis) shifted ground outwards to obtain a clear run.  In doing so, BACHI contacted with RUBICOR (S Maskiell) who in turn contacted with MASTER SONAR (M Pegus).  As a result KONISHIKI (B McCoull) who was following, had to be momentarily steadied by its rider.

Jockey S Snell (LONELY SHORE) reported at scale that he was trapped wide in the back straight and rounding the turn at the 600 metre mark.

Stewards questioned Jockey B McCoull, the rider of KONISHIKI in regard to his riding instructions and his riding of this gelding in today’s event.  He explained that he was instructed to race this horse from a backward position and that he was able to do so.  Thereafter, he explained that he had a nice run to the finish and the horse finished the race off reasonably well.  When questioned about why he used the whip on this horse to the extent that he did, in view of his explanation given to Stewards on 28 December 2003 during which he stated that the horse resents the whip and for that reason he had not used the whip on the gelding on that occasion, he stated that he had only used the whip in the back-hand position and was still of the view that the horse resented the whip.  He added that he only realized after passing the winning post the extent to which he used the whip.  He stated that it was not his intention to use the whip as he did on this occasion.  Jockey McCoull’s explanation was noted and he was advised to ensure that he rides his horses in a consistent manner so as to leave no room for query.   A post-race veterinary inspection of KONISHIKI (Trainer David Brunton) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the gelding.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event FLOPPY BUMBLE (Trainer David Brunton).

RACE 9 – CADBURY DREAM CLASS 2 HANDICAP 2100 METRES  -  8 RUNNERS

HORS CONCOURS (W Davis) threw its head up in the early stages of the event and raced ungenerously for some distance before circling the field and taking up a forward position at about the 1000 metre mark.  Shortly thereafter STARRED (T Atkin) shifted out marginally and HORS CONCOURS (W Davis) shifted in marginally which resulted in HORS CONCOURS making contact with MILLENIUM MELLAY (D Pires) who was racing behind STARRED and to the inside of HORS CONCOURS.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MILLENIUM MELLAY (Trainer Catherine Jordan) revealed the mare to have bled from its right nostril.  The mare’s left nostril was clear.  A veterinary inspection ten minutes later revealed both nostrils to be clear.

RACE 1 – HEART FOUNDATION HELPING TO KEEP YOUR HEART PUMPING MAIDEN PLATE (1) – 1200 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

KOSTA BOY (C Kingston) was slow into stride and unable to muster any early speed and tailed the field throughout.  In view of this horses performance, Stewards advised Trainer Roles that KOSTA BOY has been stood down to an official barrier trial prior to this gelding’s next race start.

RED RIVAL (B McCoull) jumped outwards at the start and raced greenly in the middle stages of the event.

LATSQUI (P Michaelides) stood flat footed as the gates were released and failed to jump. Prior to declaring correct weight, Stewards considered whether this horse should be declared a non starter.  After taking into account evidence Stewards declared this horse to be a starter.  In view of this filly’s performance Stewards advised Trainer Crook that LATSQUI was stood down to an official barrier trial during which she must jump on terms with the field.

FABULOUS WILL (J Borrett) was held up for a clear run at approximately the 450 metre mark and hung in over the home straight.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of this race CLAUSE TWO (Trainer Graeme McCulloch).

RACE 3 –THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS OF TASMANIA INC. 3YO FILLIES CLASS 6 – 1600 METRES - 5 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for SPINDABELLE (Trainer Pat Quarrell) to race without a bit lifter, but with a lugging bit.  An announcement to this effect was made prior to the event.

SPECIAL HONEY (J Borrett) was slow into stride.

Stewards reprimanded Apprentice S Hamer under AR 144 for failing to weigh in after the event when placed 4th.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of this race WINDIAN (Trainer Ian Hay).

RACE 4 – PAT CLULEY’S 50TH BIRTHDAY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for ROSEWOOD RIVERS (Trainer Graeme McCulloch) to race without blinkers, but with pacifiers.  An announcement to this effect was made prior to the event.  In addition a press release in relation to this gear change was released on Friday, 13th February 2004.

Approaching the 800 metre mark MISS LUSCIOUS (D Keating (a)) shifted in towards the rail and in doing so inconvenienced LE COUNT (L Goodrick) who had a tendency to overrace at the time. Apprentice Keating was shown the video of the incident and advised to take far greater care when shifting ground in the future.

Shortly after straightening IT’S HIM (K Bandy) who was giving ground at the time, shifted in and carried MING D’OR (J Geard (a)) inwards onto DON SERENE (D Parish) resulting in these two horses making contact.   Shortly thereafter PRINCESS LUCIA (C Kingston) shifted outwards slightly under pressure and carried DON SERENE (D Parish) outwards onto MING D’OR (J Geard (a)) resulting in these two horses again making contact.

RACE 5 – F & W STEWART SILVER INGOT 2YO HANDICAP - 1100 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

TAINUI STAR (L Goodrick) and DARBY D’OR (S Snell) contacted at the start.

Jockey Goodrick (TAINUI STAR) reported that she felt something amiss with this filly shortly after the start and as a result she eased her down.  A post race Veterinary examination of TAINUI STAR (Trainer Campbell) revealed this filly to be shin sore.   Trainer Campbell was advised that a Veterinary Certificate will be required before this filly’s next official barrier trial or race start.

Apprentice Keating (REAL ACE) reported at scale that his horse laid in throughout in this event.  Stewards noted that as a result Apprentice Keating had to stop riding on several occasions and straighten his mount.

REAL ACE (D Keating) hung in in the home straight momentarily inconveniencing ABERCROMBIE (D Pires).

Jockey Snell (DARBY D’OR) reported at scale that shortly after straightening he was held up for a clear run and added that this colt was reluctant to take a run between horses and for that reason he elected for a run to the outside of TYCOON SALI (B McCoull).  Stewards also noted that DARBY D’OR (S Snell) raced greenly in the straight.  Jockey Snell (DARBY D’OR) was shown the video and reminded of his obligations when using the whip and advised to make every effort not to strike his mounts forward of the shoulder.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of this race TAXI TOM (Trainer Allan Stubbs).

RACE 6 – FOOT & PLAYSTED TASMANIAN ST LEGER STAKES (LISTED) – 2100 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

CLASS EDITION (C Kingston) and LUNCHTIME LEGEND (B McCoull) contacted at the start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of this race LUNCHTIME LEGEND (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 7 – MITSUBISHI MOTORS AUSTRALIA LTD HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

Correct weight for this event was delayed when Stewards viewed the video of the start of this event in relation to LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) loosing many lengths at the start.  After considering evidence from all relevant parties Stewards established that LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) reared up just prior to the gates being released and as a result lost many lengths at the start.  It was also established that neither the barrier attendant or any of the mechanisms of the barrier stall structure impeded this horses’ chances of obtaining a fair start.  LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) was declared a runner.  In view of this horses’ recent history and the fact that this is the second occasion on which the horse behaved in a similar manner at this course, Stewards stood this horse down to an official barrier test to be conducted at the Mowbray Racecourse on a race day after the running of the last race.  It is also a condition that LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) be accompanied by two companion horses when it is presented for this test.  Trainer White was advised accordingly.  A post race Veterinary examination of LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Jockey Pires (MISLAID) accidentally dropped his off side rein at approximately the 200 metre mark and had to stop riding in order to regain his rein.

VIDEO FLYER (B McCoull) had a tendency to lay in in the straight.

RACE 8 – W I PLAYSTED CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

SPEEDING TURTLE (Trainer Graeme McCulloch) was incorrectly shown in the gear changes as one eyed blinker off when in fact it was removed two starts ago and replaced by blinkers.  A public announcement was made to this effect.

ZARINA BOY (D Keating (a)) and CAITLIN’S HOPE (K Dodge) overraced in the early and middle stages of the event.

STORM YACHT (S Snell) was a little fractious prior to the gates being released.

A post race Veterinary examination of SIR RODGER (Trainer Leon Wells) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Visitors Confident Despite Wide Draws

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/16072--sp-1936064663.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Victorian four-year-old Zacielo is likely to start a warm favourite in the $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) at... size=small}
Victorian four-year-old Zacielo is likely to start a warm favourite in the $200,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) at Elwick next Monday despite not faring well at today's barrier draw.

Zacielo drew barrier 14 in the field of 17, but trainer Peter Moody was not fazed by the wide draw.

"It's a decent run to the first turn from the 2400m start and the horse did go around on the track in the Tasmanian Derby last year, but he has enough early speed to overcome the wide draw," Moody said.

Zacielo has not started since he scored an impressive win at Caulfield three weeks ago but Moody sharpened the gelding in a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday.

"I couldn't be happier with my horse and his barrier trial on Monday was just enough to sharpen him up for the Cup," he said.

Tasmanian Craig Newitt will partner Zacielo in the AAMI Hobart Cup and the talented teenager will be keen to register his first Group win on home soil.

Newitt, 18, rode Zacielo at his most recent outing at Caulfield and he is supremely confident the gelding can give him his first AAMI Hobart Cup.

"The horse has done a treat since his win at Caulfield and he trialled super on Monday," Newitt said. "I expect him to be very hard to beat, especially with his light weight of 52.5kg."

The connections of last-start Flemington placegetter Danarette also are quietly confident of success, especially trainer Allan Williams.

"This horse has done really well since his run at Flemington last Saturday and provided he travels well to Tassie we expect him to run a very big race," Williams said.

"He has drawn a bit off the track in 12, but there doesn't look to be a lot of early speed in the race so we should be able to go forward early and get a nice position before the first turn," he said.

Sally Wynne will ride Danarette and she told connections after dismounting at Flemington last Saturday that the horse was "ready to win in Tassie".

Local trainer Charlie Goggin, who has won the AAMI Hobart Cup twice previously (Russian Rogue, 1992; Brorama Star, 2001) has four starters in this year's race.

After first acceptances were declared for the $200,000 AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m.) almost half of the remaining entries are from interstate.

Of the 35 first acceptors, 17 are from interstate and include yesterday's AAMI Hobart Cup winner Zacielo and the third placegetter, Liquid Lunch.

Zacielo was penalised 1.5kg for his AAMI Hobart Cup win and will have to carry 55kg in the AAMI Launceston Cup at Mowbray on February 25.

However, the gelding is an unlikely final acceptor owing to a mishap when being loaded on an aircraft for the return trip to Melbourne after yesterday's race.

Zacielo got down in his box when it was being loaded onto the aircraft and while the episode resulted in no major injuries, the gelding's trainer Peter Moody said the horse was unlikely to take his place in the AAMI Launceston Cup.

Zacielo will be transported back to Melbourne by sea later this week.

Zacielo to Spell After Cup Win

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/29967--sp-1525405052.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Promising stayer Zacielo scored his maiden stakes race win and doubled the Tasmanian stakes winning tally of Melbourne based trainer... size=small}
Promising stayer Zacielo scored his maiden stakes race win and doubled the Tasmanian stakes winning tally of Melbourne based trainer Peter Moody when he scored a popular win in today's $196,500 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m).

A four-year-old, Zacielo proved much too good for his rivals as he swept to victory. On the line he had a length and three quarters to spare over Dream Quest, while fellow Victorian based galloper Liquid Lunch was a long neck further back in third place.

Local hero St. Andrews was doing his best work late in the race to snatch fourth place. He will attempt to win his fourth consecutive Launceston Cup on February 25.

"He'll return home for a break now," Moody said from Melbourne.

Connections plan giving the son of Zabeel a chance to emulate today's Group win during the winter carnival later in the year.

"We'll look at sending him to Brisbane after the break," Moody added.

Tasmanian Stars to Reunite in Hobart Cup

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/tasmania/1560--sp-1441057742.html layout=standard image=https://www.virtualformguide.com/images/stories/tasmania.gif desc=Star Tasmanian stayer St. Andrews will be attempting to rewrite the record books in the coming weeks as his quest... size=small}
Star Tasmanian stayer St. Andrews will be attempting to rewrite the record books in the coming weeks as his quest towards a modern day record of four victories in the AAMI Launceston Cup draws near.

But while the Launceston feature might appear his main mission, the nine-year-old's trainer George Blacker is quietly confident the gallant Aliocha gelding can add his second $200,000 AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) to his already impressive record in the state's two Group 3 staying events.

St. Andrews will carry the number one saddlecloth in the AAMI Hobart Cup next Monday courtesy of his top weight of 59.5kg, a weight that some astute pundits believe is light considering his outstanding record on Tasmanian soil.

The gelding has been carrying huge weights of 61kg. or more in handicap races as lead-up events to the major cups.

He lugged 61kg at his most recent outing in the Jockey Club Cup (2200m) and finished a game third coming from well back in the field.

Blacker altered his stable star's preparation for this year's cups but the gelding will go into the AAMI Hobart Cup with enough kilometres in his legs to warrant winning the race.

One major change to this year's tilt at the big races is the reuniting of the horse and jockey Stephen Maskiell. Blacker replaced Maskiell on St. Andrews last season in the AAMI Launceston Cup, which the gelding won with Victorian hoop Noel Callow aboard.

Callow was approached, through his manager, by Blacker to ride the horse in both cups this year but the rider also was asked to travel to Tasmania to partner the gelding in the Devonport Cup last month.

A breakdown in communication between Callow and his manager led to the Victorian rider losing the plum ride and this led to Maskiell regaining the ride on a horse he regards as the best stayer he has ridden.

Maskiell missed the ride on St. Andrews in the Jockey Club Cup through suspension, but he knows the horse well and nothing would give the rider greater pleasure than to guide him to victory in next Monday's Group 3 event.

"St. Andrews is proven in both cups and while he's a nine-year-old he didn't start his racing career until very late and he hasn't had a lot of starts, so his age is no real disadvantage," Maskiell said.

"The preparation George (Blacker) has given him this time in has been ideal and you only have to look at the gradual improvement the horse has made at each run to realise he is ready to make his presence felt in both cups," he said.

Maskiell has the best modern-day record in the AAMI Hobart Cup with three successes. He rode Nakagima to victory in 1989 for Tommy Young, followed by Russian Rogue (Charlie Goggin) in 1992 and he partnered St. Andrews to victory in 2002 in the race record time of 2min.27.65sec.

If Maskiell can steer St. Andrews to victory next Monday he will join an elite group of jockeys who have won the race four times, the others being the great Eddie Cox and Edwin Power.

Cox, who was Tasmania's leading rider for 17 consecutive seasons, won on Stylish Lady (1938), Seriki (1955 and 1956) and Welton (1961), while Power's victories were aboard Chaldean (1889), Macquarie (1890), Hopetoun (1892) and Amadeus (1894).

While St. Andrews has the credentials to give Maskiell the modern day record, the state's premier jockey Brendon McCoull has a great chance to notch his first win in the race aboard last season's Tasmanian horse of the year Dream Quest.

Dream Quest, prepared at Devonport by Barry Campbell, was last season's standout three-year-old, winning the Tasmanian Guineas, Devonport Cup and Tasmanian Derby.

Dream Quest has improved at every outing this preparation and will take winning form into the AAMI Hobart Cup.

The four-year-old gelding was placed at weight-for-age before finishing third to Chardere in the Devonport Cup (1800m) but recaptured his best form with an effortless win in the Sheffield Cup (2370m) on his home track on Australia Day.

Dream Quest carried the top weight of 58kg in the Sheffield Cup but made light of the task and while he has his share of weight in the AAMI Hobart Cup of 54.5kg, Campbell is confident the gelding has what it takes to win the $200,000 Group 3 race at Elwick.

"He has given me the impression throughout this campaign that he is looking for more ground and he has pulled up a treat from his Sheffield Cup run, so he will go into the Hobart Cup spot-on for what will be the biggest challenge of his career," Campbell said.

"He won the Derby over 2400m on the Hobart track last season and he really seemed to relish the journey in the Sheffield Cup, so it's all systems go for the Hobart Cup and if he does well in that we'll probably push on to the Launceston Cup two weeks later," he said.
