An unusual betting phenomena occurred at the King Island races (off Tasmania) on Saturday when one of the six races on the card has five equal on course favourites.

Sounds unusual - well also consider there were only seven runners in the race and the two "outsiders" were only one point longer than the favourites.

It was the fourth race on the card - a 1400 metre event - a race won by one of the equal favourites (at 3/1) Cardiff.

This is the way the horses finished:

1st CARDIFF - 3/1 eq fav
2nd MISS BARYSH - 3/1 eq fav
3rd SANTABURY - 3/1 eq fav
4th TORQUE RHYTHM - 3/1 eq fav
5th THE ADGIE - 4/1
6th KING KOBBLER - 3/1 eq fav
7th ROBARCH - 4/1

Not surprisingly 3/1 was the longest of the favourites for the afternoon.

A post-race veterinary inspection of ANDRE THE GIANT (Trainer Helen Patterson) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (Trainer Charlie Goggin).

RACE 9 -  PIER ONE RESTAURANT & BAR CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1600 METRES  -   13 RUNNERS

Stewards granted permission for Jockey P Michaelides to ride MAN IN BLACK (Trainer Chris Crook) one kilogram over the gelding’s allotted weight as there was no other rider available at or near the allotted weight for this gelding.  At a subsequent inquiry Jockey Michaelides was found guilty of a charge under AR-120(b) in that he accepted a ride for which he was subsequently found to be overweight.  Jockey Michaelides was consequently fined $200.

NUVOLARI (C Kingston) was slow into stride.

Shortly after the start, the saddle on BACHI (E Chan A) slipped forward, placing Apprentice Chan at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

Rounding the turn at about the 1400 metre mark, BACHI (E Chan A) contacted with MAN IN BLACK (P Michaelides) to its inside and thereafter shifted out and contacted with NUVOLARI (C Kingston) to its outside.

Rounding the home turn just prior to straightening, AERIAL PURSUIT (S Snell) who was laying at the time, rolled in marginally.  As a result, DEFRAUD (J Borrett)  racing to its immediate inside also rolled in marginally which in turn resulted in this gelding’s hindquarters making contact with SCOTTISH SYMBOL (S Maskiell).  As a consequence, Jockey Maskiell had to check his mount and lost some ground on the field.  In the circumstances, Stewards were unable to attribute the incident due to the careless riding of any one rider and took no further action.  When questioned about why he did not persevere with his riding following this incident, Jockey Maskiell (SCOTTISH SYMBOL) stated that after checking his mount he thought that the horse had sustained a cut to one of its legs and that there was something amiss with this gelding.  As a result, he did not persevere with his riding in the straight.  Stewards also noted that a post-race veterinary inspection of SCOTTISH SYMBOL (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any abnormalities.  Whilst Stewards noted Jockey Maskiell’s explanation, he was advised that in future under similar circumstances to at least test his horse once it has balanced up after suffering interference.

ALVA (B McCoull) shifted in momentarily at about the 150 metre mark and as a result Jockey McCoull lost his balance

RACE 1 - MAL GERRARD MAIDEN PLATE – 4YO & UPWARDS SET WEIGHTS -  1200 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Trainer G White and Jockey S Gates (ESTATE KING) wished to view the video with a view to lodging a protest.  After viewing the video, both Trainer White and Jockey Gates decided against lodging a protest and correct weight was announced.  Upon inquiry it was established that rounding the home turn HELLO HEAVEN (M Allen A) had switched across the heels of EDGED IN RED (S Snell) to improve its position.  EDGED IN RED then shifted wider on the track with HELLO HEAVEN shifting out abruptly despite the efforts of its rider.  As a result ESTATE KING (S Gates) and MUDA’S DAY (D Pires) were inconvenienced and DEMKE (S Maskiell) was severely checked.  Shortly after straightening, EDGED IN RED (S Snell) rolled back towards the rail and hampered MANTLE TALK (K Bandy) for some distance.

As the start was affected, ESTATE KING (S Gates) jumped outwards and EDGED IN RED (S Snell) jumped inwards.  As a result, FEAR THE WIND (T Atkin), MUDA’S DAY (D Pires), DEMKE (S Maskiell) and DREAM RACER (P Michaelides) were all hampered for some distance with DEMKE and DREAM RACER both losing their positions.

At about the 200 metre mark PRINCESS AVENGER (B McCoull) shifted in under pressure, momentarily inconveniencing FULL OF TRICKS (R Bradley).

Jockey S Snell (EDGED IN RED) reported at scale that his mount was very difficult to ride throughout the event and upon pulling up, he noted that the bit had pulled through the mare’s mouth.  Stewards spoke to Trainer Royston Carr and advised him that a warning had been placed on this mare’s racing manners.

When questioned about today’s performance of DEMKE, Jockey S Maskiell stated that the gelding had struck interference shortly after the start and again rounding the home turn and as a result of both incidents, DEMKE was unable to maintain momentum and therefore, in his opinion, this materially affected the gelding’s performance today.

The Club’s doctor and ambulance officers attended Jockey P Michaelides after he was trodden on by his mount in the mounting yard following the running of this event.  Jockey Michaelides was subsequently cleared to fulfil his remaining riding engagements today.

Post-race veterinary inspections of HELLO HEAVEN (Trainer Steven Brazendale), FEAR THE WIND (Trainer P E Jones), and DEMKE (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 2 - AVERY PARTNERS 3-Y-O MAIDEN PLATE - DIVISION 1 SET WEIGHTS - 1200 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

PETE’S CHOICE (S Gates) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages.

At about the 800 metre mark, IMAGE CONSCIOUS (S Snell) which was racing keenly, switched across the heels of PETE’S CHOICE (S Gates) to take up a position wider on the track.  IMAGE CONSCIOUS raced ungenerously for some distance thereafter.

US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) raced greenly throughout and at approximately the 700 metre mark, shifted outwards.  As a result MR GLENFERRIE (E Chan A), was placed awkwardly on the heels of runners for a number of strides.  TARN HOPE (D Pires) and ROLY KEN (D Keating A) who were following, had to be restrained.

At approximately the 200 metre mark, ROLY KEN was reluctant to take a run between MR GLENFERRIE (E Chan A) and US INDIAN GIVERS (R Bradley) and as a result had to be eased slightly.

ALL GEARD UP (P Michaelides) was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.

In the run to the finish, IMAGE CONSCIOUS (S Snell) shifted wider on the track under pressure.

Jockey S Snell (IMAGE CONSCIOUS) reported at scale that his mount was inclined to lay out from approximately the 600 metre mark onwards.

RACE 3 - ROADWAYS 3-Y-O MAIDEN PLATE - DIVISION 2  3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS - 1200 METRES -  10 RUNNERS

Jockey Leah Goodrick was fined $50 under AR-175(k) for negligence in that she wore the wrong colours for her ride on JUST JONES in this event.

As the start was affected MISTERO (B McCoull) jumped out and made contact with SUPER BREW (S Maskiell).

ANNMAIN (C Burt) was slow away at the start.

ALSANDREA (S Snell) had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

On returning to scale, Jockey D Pires (RAMASQUE) reported that his mount hung in on a number of occasions during the running of the event.

Stewards questioned Jockey K Bandy about the apparent disappointing performance of the favourite LITTLELIONHART.  Jockey Bandy reported that whilst he was content to take a sit due to the early pace, the filly was inclined to lay out and in his opinion the filly felt flat when compared to her last two starts and therefore, he was disappointed with today’s effort.   Stewards noted his comments.

Post-race veterinary inspections of SUPER BREW (Trainer Charlie Goggin)  and JUST JONES (Trainer Charlie Goggin) who both tailed the field at the finish, failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race NATIVE PLUME (Trainer Rebecca Bovell).

RACE 4 - GRANADA CLUBS & HOTELS 2-Y-O HANDICAP 1000 METRES  -  11 RUNNERS

Trainer R Carr was charged $55.00 for the use of the Club’s colours on FUN ALLY and GRAND MOON DANZING.

The start of this race was delayed approximately one to two minutes due to a number of horses proving difficult to load due to the blustery weather conditions.

LADETO (C Burt) and GRAND MOON DANZING (R Bradley) were slow away.

ORPEN TIME (T Atkin) was slow to muster early speed.

As the start was affected. FUN ALLY (D Keating A) jumped inwards and contacted with ORPEN TIME (T Atkin).  At the same time LADETO (C Burt) jumped outwards and contacted with STUYVESANT (S Gates) who in turn bumped with GRAND MOON DANZING (R Bradley) shortly after.

At approximately the 800 metre mark, FUN ALLY (D Keating A) shifted out abruptly and inconvenienced POP THE BALLOON (S Maskiell) for a number of strides.

Approaching the 600 metre mark, FUN ALLY (D Keating A) shifted ground inwards and as a result, tightened POP THE BALLOON (S Maskiell) in onto STUYVESANT (S Gates) which resulted in Jockey Gates having to restrain his mount for a number of strides.  Stewards spoke with Apprentice Keating and showed him the film of this incident and advised him that he is to take far greater care when shifting ground in the future and conceded that the manners of his mount were a contributing factor.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jockey S Maskiell, the rider of the second placegetter (POP THE BALLOON) wished to view the official video patrol film.  After viewing the film, Jockey Maskiell advised that he wished to lodge a protest against          FUN ALLY (D Keating A) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference over the concluding stages.  After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, the protest was dismissed.  Stewards were of the opinion that the material extent of the interference suffered did not exceed the margin at the end of the race and the Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared.  It was established that approaching the 250 metre mark, FUN ALLY shifted ground outwards abruptly and at the same time POP THE BALLOON which was inclined to lay in at the time, switched across the heels of that filly to take a run closer to the rail.   Stewards established that the interference in the home straight was minimal and as a reuslt of he racing manners of FUN ALLY and to a lesser degree POP THE BALLOON.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race FUN ALLY (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 5 - COLLEX MAIDEN / CLASS 1 PLATE SET WEIGHTS - 2100 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

DEVON’S SPIRIT (D Keating A) pulled hard in the early stages of the race.

ME OLD MUKKA (D Pires) raced very wide in the home straight.

DEVON’S SPIRIT (D Keating A) was inclined to lay in over the concluding stages.

In the presence of his master Trainer T Roles, Apprentice David Keating, the rider of DEVON’S SPIRIT was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR-137(a), the terms of the charge being that whilst riding DEVON’S SPIRIT at approximately the 550 metre mark, he elected to shift ground outwards to obtain a run and in doing so tightened NORMAN FLYER (R Bradley) who had MATANE (T Atkin) on her outside.  As a result of this movement, Jockey R Bradley had to check her mount and made solid contact with MATANE, unbalancing that mare for some distance.  In coming to a penalty, Stewards took into account that Apprentice Keating has a relatively clean record. Notwithstanding this fact, Apprentice Keating was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence midnight 30/11/2003 and to expire midnight 07/12/2003.   This period reflects the equivalent of two race meetings in Tasmania.  Apprentice Keating has the right of appeal.

RACE 6 - TWENTIETH CENTURY PLUMBING CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 METRES -  8 RUNNERS

MESTINOS (S Gates) was fractious in the barriers.

Shortly after the start, MESTINOS (S Gates) got its head up in the air whilst being restrained by its rider.

Stewards inquired  into the manner with which PERSONAL PEAK was ridden in today’s race by Jockey S Maskiell.  After interviewing Trainer C N Goggin and rider, Jockey S Maskiell and viewing the betting sheets, Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

A post-race veterinary inspection of PERSONAL PEAK failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

On returning to scale, EMPEROR NAPOLEON (J Borrett) was found to have blood in its off-side nostril and underwent a veterinary inspection. This initial inspection was followed up some period later with a second inspection and as there was no blood evident in the near side nostril, in accordance with AR-53, EMPEROR NAPOLEON was not deemed to be a bleeder.  When questioned, rider Jockey J Borrett said in her opinion, she believed this gelding did not strike its head in the barriers structure at any stage.

As the start was affected, CHARLIE RAAMI (S McFerran) was tightened for room when ZEQUEST (S Maskiell) jumped in and SPIT THE PIP (L Goodrick) jumped outwards.   CHARLIE RAAMI lost ground in consequence.

At about the 200 metre mark, KELLEN (B McCoull) shifted ground inwards under pressure and made contact with ZEQUEST (S Maskiell).  Shortly after this incident, KELLEN then elected to shift ground out over the heels of EAST WEST (T Atkin) to improve.

Stewards questioned Trainer C Crook and Jockey D Pires about the apparent improved performance of BADGER’S RETREAT.   Trainer C Crook stated in her opinion that this gelding had been above himself and therefore changed his feeding regime and also removed the cross over nose band which in her opinion resulted in a change of attitude in the gelding.  Jockey Pires was of the opinion the gelding raced with more enthusiasm today by comparision to two starts ago when this gelding was slow to begin and reluctant to race truly.

RACE 1 - NIMBLEFOOT MAIDEN PLATE - 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS - 1205 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

SAVILLE (S Snell) blundered at the start and AL SHEBA (J Borrett) was slow away. As a result both these horses tailed the field.

DREAM RACER (P Michaelides) and ICED (S Maskiell) raced wide on the turn rounding the 1100 metre mark.

ICED (S Maskiell) laid out rounding the home turn.

FLYING DIVA (S Gates) hung out throughout in the home straight.

When questioned about his riding on ICED over the concluding stages, Jockey S Maskiell stated that this gelding laid out from approximately the 500 metre mark onwards and thereafter in the home straight, he felt something amiss with this horse over the concluding stages. As a result, he did not persevere with his normal riding. It was also established that ICED shifted in away from DREAM RACER at about the 100 metre mark when this gelding shifted in. Stewards ordered a veterinary inspection of ICED and noted Jockey Maskiell’s explanation. The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that a post‑race inspection revealed ICED to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Charlie Goggin was advised that a veterinary certificate must be tendered prior to the gelding’s next official barrier trial or race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race FLYING DIVA (Trainer Neil Richardson).

RACE 2 - THE QUACK CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1920 METRES – 6 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately two minutes due to a delay with the finish of the first race at Strathalbyn’s race meeting.

When questioned about CHEQUE BOOK BLITZ’s performance today, Jockey McCoull stated that this horse pulled very hard in the early stages and as a result the gelding was difficult to restrain and although it was his intention to race from a forward position, he had not intended to race as far forward as he had done. It was also his opinion that CHEQUE BOOK BLITZ would be better suited to shorter distances in future. Stewards noted his explanation.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SUPER HENRY (NZ) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 - MALUA CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1205 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

SHEEDS (S Snell) jumped awkwardly at the start and as a consequence lost its racing position.

MATSONATION (C Kingston) laid in throughout in the straight.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MATSONATION (Trainer P E Jones) revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer Jones was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness is required before the gelding’s next official barrier trial or race start.

A post-race veterinary inspection of QUEST FOR GOLD (Trainer Ken Dixon) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 4 - SHEET ANCHOR CLASS 4 HANDICAP – DIVISION 1 - 1550 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected MISS TIFFANY (Trainer Catherine Jordan) prior to the start and passed the mare fit to take its place with the field.

Stewards granted permission for Jockey S Gates to replace Jockey S Snell on MISS TIFFANY when Jockey Snell was found to be overweight. At a subsequent inquiry Jockey S Snell pleaded guilty to a charge under AR-120(b) in that he accepted the ride on MISS TIFFANY for which he was subsequently found to be overweight. Jockey Snell was fined $100. Stewards also found Jockey S Snell guilty of a charge under AR‑175(a) in that he acted in an improper manner after originally weighing out for this event (MISS TIFFANY) he removed his saddle from the weighing room area and took it into the Jockeys’ Room and then returned to the weighing room area, and after being requested to weigh out a second time, he weighed out in excess of the weight at which he weighed out originally. Jockey Snell was subsequently fined the sum of $300 for this breach.

MISS TIFFANY (S Gates) jumped awkwardly and lost one to two lengths at the start.

A post-race veterinary inspection of FLY GEORGIE (Trainer Miss Jenny James) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Stewards spoke with Trainer Miss Jenny James and her stable employee, Mr K Clemens in relation to their attitude towards the Club’s veterinary surgeon when she requested to inspect FLY GEORGIE following the running of this race.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race LATEST TOY (Trainer Dianne Ray-Luttrell).

RACE 5 - DARRIWELL 3-Y-O MAIDEN PLATE – SET WEIGHTS - 1080 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

ANNMAIN (C Burt) blundered at the start.

As the start was affected, PHYLLIS MAY (S Maskiell) jumped outwards, making contact with SQUANDERMANIA (L Goodrick) who was then carried out and made contact with GOOD GOD (D Keating A).

SIZAIRE (R Bradley) shifted in slightly shortly after the start and as a result RADAR ROCKET (S Snell) became crowded for galloping room and had to be steadied by its rider.

Racing to the 900 metres, IGOLIDE (P Michaelides) commenced to race fiercely and had to be steadied off the heels of TARN HOPE (D Pires).

Approaching the 700 metre mark RADAR ROCKET (S Snell) was crowded for racing room when attempting a run to the inside of MISTERO (B McCoull) who rolled in marginally.

Approaching the 500 metre mark, SIZAIRE (R Bradley) appeared to slip behind. As a result Jockey Bradley became unbalanced and was subsequently dislodged from the colt. As a result of the fallen rider, RADAR ROCKET (S Snell) and ANNMAIN (C Burt) had to take evasive action to avoid Jockey Bradley. Jockey Bradley was transported to hospital for observation. After viewing the fall on the official patrol video, Stewards confiscated Jockey Bradley’s skull cap (serial number A 244038).

Subsequent to the running of the event, Stewards inspected the track in the vicinity of where SIZAIRE appeared to slip and found nothing untoward with the track. Stewards intend to question Jockey Bradley when she is available.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SIZAIRE (Trainer Royston Carr) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of IGOLIDE (Trainer Chris Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 6 - METRO TASMANIA HANDICAP - 1550 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

MOCCA (S Snell) was slow away at the start.

MOCCA (S Snell) was held up for a clear run over the concluding stages, to the inside of CREIGHTON (NZ) (S Maskiell) and behind IRISH REACTION (T Atkin) and as a result had to switch out over this horse’s heels to obtain clear running.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race CREIGHTON (NZ) (Trainer Neil Richardson).

RACE 7 - PIPING LANE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – DIVISION 2 - 1550 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race A THOUSAND REASONS (Trainer Michael Trinder).

RACE 8 - RAY TRINDER CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1080 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

Stewards opened an inquiry into the reasons why DAYBREAK DAWN (T Atkin) appeared to clip heels, resulting in Jockey Atkin becoming unbalanced and DAYBREAK DAWN being retired from the race. After hearing evidence from the following riders: Apprentice T Wong – accompanied by his Master Mr Leon Wells (MILITIA), Jockey S Gates (BORN A QUEEN), Jockey L Goodrick (INVERMAY GIRL) and Jockey S Maskiell (MANCHA), it was established that nearing the 600 metre mark MILITIA (T Wong A) who was racing to the inside of MANCHA (S Maskiell) rolled out slightly when Apprentice Wong attempted to obtain racing room to the outside of MANCHA (S Maskiell). As a result BORN A QUEEN (S Gates) who was racing to the outside of MILITIA, was taken out which resulted in DAYBREAK DAWN (T Atkin) becoming crowded for galloping room between BORN A QUEEN and INVERMAY GIRL. Thereafter it appeared to clip the heels of BORN A QUEEN, blundered and was pulled up by its rider and retired from the event. INVERMAY GIRL (L Goodrick) was also inconvenienced when taking evasive action. In the circumstances, Stewards took no direct action against Apprentice Wong, as they did not believe that his actions were careless. However, he was advised to ensure that he takes more care when shifting ground in future. A post-race veterinary examination of DAYBREAK DAWN revealed that the gelding had sustained a fracture of the off-fore pastern and DAYBREAK DAWN was subsequently euthanased.
