TRC - 15 June 2003 - Race 6

Stewards today inquired into the tactics adopted by JONES (S Snell) and PARIS RHYME (B McCoull) when they ran in the sixth race on Sunday, 15 June 2003, a Class 4 race run over 1550 metres at Elwick. When questioned, Jockey Snell stated that he was instructed to lead. He was of the view that JONES began fairly and after encouraging the horse with the whip, it made up ground and raced forward, sharing the lead with PARIS RHYME. Thereafter the horse commenced to give ground rounding the home turn and failed to sustain its run to the finish. Jockey B McCoull, the rider of PARIS RHYME, stated that he was instructed to lead if possible. He stated that the horse began fairly and found the lead without much effort and finished the race off respectably. Mr Goggin confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Snell in relation to JONES. When questioned as to whether they allowed their mounts to do too much in the early stages, Jockeys Snell and McCoull were of the view that this was not the case. When questioned about the change of tactics adopted in relation to JONES this preparation, Mr Goggin stated that JONES won his first three races as a three year old leading. He then decided to race the horse from a backward position over staying distances. He subsequently decided, as the horse had only won one race racing in this manner, to revert to his earlier tactics and prepared it in this manner in trials. Stewards viewed JONES’ runs this preparation and in addition seven of its most recent starts in Victoria between 8 September 2002 and 12 January 2003 and also its runs on the 16 and 26 February 2003 at Mowbray. Stewards also took note of betting activity in Race 6 on 15 June 2003.

After considering all the evidence, Stewards noted Jockey Snell’s and Jockey McCoull’s explanations. It was clearly evident that JONES led in all his starts this preparation. It was also noted that JONES had raced from a backward position in most of its runs leading up to this preparation. In the circumstances, Stewards noted Mr Goggin’s explanation and advised him that they expect that JONES will be raced in a manner consistent with its starts this preparation. He was also advised to ensure he advises Stewards of any intention to adopt different racing tactics in respect of this gelding in future.

RACE 1 - METRO EXPRESS MAIDEN PLATE

3YO & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS - 1400 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

AUSTRALIA (Trainer Royston Carr) was a late scratching at 8.50 am by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer Carr was advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to the colt’s next race start.

This race was delayed when SEARCH WEST was a late scratching at 12.03 pm by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice when the gelding reared at the barriers then fell heavily, dislodging Jockey C Kingston. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on SEARCH WEST (14/1) prior to 12.03 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 12.03 pm to be paid less six cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and six cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket. Stewards advised Trainer Rodney Seymour that SEARCH WEST will be stood down from future racing until the gelding satisfactorily passes a barrier trial in the presence of a Steward. Jockey C Kingston was examined by the on-course ambulance officers and passed fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements.

The start of this race was further delayed when DELTA ROMEO (D Parish) broke through the front of its barrier gates. The gelding was restrained by its rider and returned to behind the barriers where the veterinary surgeon inspected it. After inspection, DELTA ROMEO was passed fit to take its place with the field. An announcement to this effect was made prior to the event.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jockey K Bandy, the rider of the fourth placegetter MISS MATSQUI wished to view the official video patrol film. After viewing the film, Jockey Bandy advised that he wished to lodge a protest against KEN’S COPY (Clint Massey) being declared the third placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference from approximately the 300 metres and over the concluding stages. After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, Stewards were of the opinion that the material extent of the interference suffered by MISS MATSQUI exceeded the margins between the two horses at the finish, therefore, the protest was upheld. Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings be changed to:

First BORN TO HUSTLE (B McCoull - Trainer David Brunton)

Second PRINCE RAFTER (S Maskiell - Trainer Leon Wells)

Third MISS MATSQUI (K Bandy - Trainer W N McShane)

Fourth KEN’S COPY (C Massey - Trainer Brian Lomasney)

Fifth GO WAY OUT (S Snell - Trainer Jenny James)

It was established that approaching the 300 metre mark, KEN’S COPY (C Massey) shifted ground inwards despite the efforts of its rider, crowding MISS MATSQUI (K Bandy) resulting in K Bandy having to stop riding and steady his mount on at least two occasions.

As the start was affected, VALDONI (E Chan A) stood flat-footed and refused to jump then tailed the field thereafter. After consulting with the Starter, and acting on their own observations that there was no material reason why this mare could not jump with the field, Stewards stood down VALDONI from future racing until the mare satisfactorily passes a barrier trial in the presence of a Steward.

CHAPELLERIE (P Michaelides) was slow into stride.

DELTA ROMEO (D Parish) was inclined to race greenly in the early and middle stages.

A post-race veterinary inspection of VALDONI (Trainer Len Watling) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BORN TO HUSTLE (Trainer David Brunton).

RACE 2 - PUBLIC TRANSPORT MAIDEN PLATE

3YO & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS - 1200 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

VAIN DANE was a late scratching at 11.42 am by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice when the mare was found to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Ken Dixon was advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate of soundness before VAIN DANE’s next race start.

This race was delayed due to the protest hearing in Race 1 and owing to STREET CHOIR’S refusal to be loaded into its barrier stall. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of STREET CHOIR at 12.42 pm due to the filly’s barrier manners. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on STREET CHOIR (12/1) prior to 12.42 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 12.42 pm to be paid less seven cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and seven cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket. Trainer David Brunton was advised that this filly must satisfactorily pass a barrier trial in the presence of a Steward before its next race start.

As the gates were released TERCENTENARY (L Goodrick) and EIREWAY (J Nevin A) and were a little slow into stride.

EIREWAY (J Nevin A) raced greenly in the early stages.

Leaving the 1000 metres, NICALI (S Maskiell) laid in despite the efforts of its rider, severely crowding STRATHMORE LUCK (B McCoull) in on to EIREWAY (J Nevin A). As a result STRATHMORE LUCK became unbalanced and was hampered for a number of strides.

At approximately the 400 metre mark, DREAM RACER (P Michaelides) whilst attempting to take a run between SMALL NOTES (D Parish) which was racing on the rail and TERCENTENARY (L Goodrick) which was racing approximately three and a half horses off the rail, appeared to clip the heels of SMALL NOTES and blunder, almost dislodging Jockey Michaelides when SMALL NOTES rolled out marginally in an abrupt manner. Jockey D Parish immediately straightened her mount. In all the circumstances, Stewards were unable to take any action against any particular rider because of the abruptness and nature of the shift.

TERCENTENARY (L Goodrick) and WORTH A MENTION (D Pires A) hung in under pressure over the concluding stages.

On return to scale, Jockey S Maskiell reported that NICALI (S Maskiell) hung in badly and as a result, Jockey Maskiell’s saddle shifted slightly sideways and placed him at a major disadvantage. Jockey Maskiell eased his mount down over the concluding stages.

On return to scale, it was noted that PLATINO (Trainer Royston Carr) had sustained superficial wounds to its near-side hind leg. After inspection by the Club’s veterinary surgeon, Trainer Carr was advised that a veterinary certificate is not needed before the gelding’s next race.

A post-race veterinary inspection of NICALI failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

The Club’s Doctor examined Jockey S Maskiell following the running of this race and declared him unfit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements today. Stewards advised Jockey S Maskiell that he is required to provide a medical certificate declaring him fit to ride before riding in any track work, trials or races.

Jockey S Tsaikos, the rider of IAM IAM, was dislodged after passing the winning post after the saddle slipped sideways in running. The saddle on this gelding was recovered in the presence of a Steward who handed the saddle to the Clerk of Scales and on his return, Jockey Tsaikos was weighed with his saddle and weighed in correctly for this event. He was also examined by the on-course ambulance staff and Club’s doctor (Dr M Loughhead) who declared him fit to fulfill his remaining riding engagements. When questioned, Jockey Tsaikos stated that the saddle started slipping shortly after straightening. Stewards also noted that as a result of his saddle slipping, he was placed at a disadvantage over the concluding stages and he was unable to fully assist his horse in running and consequently did not ride this filly out in his normal manner. Stewards, after viewing the video of Jockey Tsaikos’ fall and after questioning him, concluded that although his skullcap had contacted the surface of the racetrack, it did not sustain a severe impact and in the circumstances Stewards returned his skullcap to him for use.

SAVONNEUX (C Massey) and DIDDLEY SQUAT (R Bradley A) were slow away, losing one to two lengths at the start. Thereafter DIDDLEY SQUAT (R Bradley A) shifted in abruptly at about the 900 metre mark and contacted the inside running rail.

Approaching the 600 metre mark HEKATE (K Bandy) was awkwardly placed on the heels of WHISPERING WARRIOR (S Maskiell) and MALLOW (B McCoull) for a short distance.

MALLOW (B McCoull) and IAM IAM (S Tsaikos) brushed for a short distance at about the 200 metre mark when both horses shifted ground.

WHISPERING WARRIOR (S Maskiell) laid in throughout in the straight despite the efforts of its rider, shifting ground inwards and brushing with DREAM RACER (P Michaelides) at about the 150 metre mark. Shortly thereafter at about the 50 metre mark, WHISPERING WARRIOR again shifted in and contacted with DREAM RACER to its inside.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SAVONNEUX (Trainer Peter Geeves) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A routine swab sample was taken from the third placegetter IAM IAM (Trainer Royston Carr)

PINTERRY MORGAN (R Hanby A) and SECRETARY LADY (D Parish) were slow into stride.

At about the 800 metre mark PINTERRY MORGAN (R Hanby A) was awkwardly placed on the heels of runners in front, then shifted in slightly and contacted with SECRETARY LADY (D Parish).

Stewards granted permission for Jockey Tsaikos to ride EBONIZE (Trainer Peter Luttrell) one kilogram above the weight allotted to this mare. In coming to this decision Stewards considered a submission by Jockey Tsaikos and advised him that the indulgence granted on this occasion should not be seen as a precedence for the future.

The start of this race was delayed for some five minutes when HEARTLESS (P Michaelides) reared after being placed in its barrier stall and broke through the front gates and cantered down the back straight. Thereafter HEARTLESS was caught by the Clerk of the Course at the top of the home straight, returned to the barriers where the gelding was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to take its place with the field. HEARTLESS again proved fractious after being loaded into its barrier stall and as a result the front gates opened again. Stewards advised Trainer McShane that a warning had been placed on this gelding’s barrier manners.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey C Burt, the rider of LANGKAWI (C Burt) and Trainer John Blacker wished to view the video of the concluding stages of this event with a view to lodging a protest. After viewing the video, both Jockey Burt and Trainer Blacker decided against proceeding with a protest. It was established that MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (S Maskiell) shifted ground inwards under pressure over the concluding stages and in doing so carried SQUIRE MOOR (B McCoull) inwards. As a result of this inward movement, LANGKAWI became slightly crowded for galloping room.

Shortly thereafter SQUIRE MOOR continued to shift ground inwards slightly which again inconvenienced LANGKAWI who had to be steadied by its rider.

A swab sample was taken from the second placegetter of the race HEARTLESS (Trainer W N McShane).

As a result FINE OMENS (S Maskiell) who was following had to be steadied by its rider.

Rounding the home turn, at approximately the 450 metre mark, FINE OMENS (S Maskiell) was held up for a clear run for a number of strides.

CORINDHAP (S Gates) was slow away, losing a length at the start.

Approaching the 1100 metre mark DISGUISE THE EYES (S Tsaikos) was awkwardly placed on the heels of MATRIX HUTNER (S Maskiell) and had to be steadied when the pace appeared to slow slightly in front. As a result DISGUISE THE EYES contacted with the inside running rail, shifted out and inconvenienced QUI LADY (C Kingston) to its outside who had to be steadied by its rider when this mare was awkwardly placed between DISGUISE THE EYES and FEMME BUISSON (L Goodrick)

DEI GRATIA (C Burt) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event.

MAPS (C Burt) was slow away.

MESTINOS (S Gates) reared as the start was affected and as a consequence lost some ground.

Approaching the 800 metre mark DAUBERWIN (D Parish) shifted in and carried LITTLE PORKIES (NZ) (C Kingston) inwards. As a result MESTINOS (S Gates) had to be steadied to the inside of these gelding. Jockey D Parish was shown the video of the incident and reminded of her obligations and to ensure that she allows sufficient room in future when shifting ground.

SIR RODGER (T Wong A) jumped out at the start onto ALVA (K Bandy). As a result MASTER SONAR (S Gates), which was a little slow away, had to be steadied off the heels of ALVA. Shortly thereafter, ALVA became buffeted between SIR RODGER and BEAR’S SCENE (K Sanderson) when both these runners shifted marginally.

Rounding the turn at the 600 metre mark, SHINING OCHRE (C Massey) shifted outwards slightly and carried SANDANONA (C Burt) and DEVON RELAY (C Kingston) wider on the track.
