World class riders won here

Former crack Australian and international jockeys and great mates Arthur "Scobie" Breasley and Ron Hutchinson have fond memories of the AAMI Hobart Cup.

With his only ride at the Elwick track, Scobie rode the 1947 AAMI Hobart Cup winner Wingfire for trainer Cecil Crossin and Hutchinson was successful in successive years, winning in 1952 on Royal Release and 1953 aboard Sir Legis.

Forty years later, Hutchinson’s son Peter ("the laughing jockey") won the 1993 AAMI Hobart Cup on the Bart Cummings-trained Frontier Boy. One year earlier he was runner-up on the same horse for trainer David Hayes.

They are the only father-son combination to have ridden AAMI Hobart Cup winners.

Now a trainer, Ron Hutchinson has the former Lindsay Park galloper Old Tawny among his charges.

Modern jockeys’ record

Current Tasmanian jockey Stephen Maskiell has the best modern day record of AAMI Hobart Cup victories with three, one clear of Kevin Dodge, who had back-to-back successes in 1994-95 with Southern States and Courtly Way.

Maskiell won last year’s race in record time (2:27.65) aboard St Andrews to add to his previous wins on Nakagima (1989) and Russian Rogue (1992).

Four to beat

Eddie Cox and Edwin Power share the AAMI Hobart Cup record of four wins. Cox, the state’s leading rider for 17 consecutive seasons, won on Stylish Lady (1938), Seriki (1955 and 1956) and Welton (1961).

The record had been set 67 cups earlier following Power’s victories on Chaldean (1889), Macquarie (1890), Hopetoun (1892) and Amadeus (1894).

Until her accident that ended her career in May, 1998, Beverley Buckingham was on her way to the record following successes in 1986 (Dark Intruder), 1996 (Jam City) and 1998 (L’Espion). In 1986, Beverley became the first female to ride an AAMI Hobart Cup winner and the victory was more special as her father, Ted Buckingham, trained Dark Intruder.

Quinella success

Elwick based trainer Gary White provided the AAMI Hobart Cup quinella when L’Espion defeated Free Beer in 1998. Prominent Tasmanian thoroughbred breeder Brian Higgins bred both horses. The previous trainer to quinella the race was Andy Robertson with Welton and Dark Spot in 1961.

Flying feat for Bart’s ‘Boy’

Cups king Bart Cummings, who was among the spectators when St Andrews won the race last year, has an AAMI Hobart Cup among his string of big race victories around Australia. In 1993, his Grosvenor six-year-old, Frontier Boy, led all the way in a controversial AAMI Hobart Cup. The race club had delayed the race start for more than an hour due to the aircraft carrying interstate starters, including Frontier Boy, having been late in departing from Melbourne.

Murphy and Smith victories

The late trainers Geoff Murphy and Tommy Smith, father of Gai Waterhouse, are among the many interstate trainers to have enjoyed AAMI Hobart Cup successes. A Caulfield-based trainer, Murphy won in 1973 with Sir Trutone, ridden by Alan Trevena, and in 1987 when Gary Willetts piloted Cylai. Sydney’s most outstanding trainer, Smith won in 1982 with Powerful Prince, providing jockey Malcolm Johnston with his second victory in the race after his 1979 success on Kubla Khan.

Training record is safe

Current trainer Brian Lomasney, who prepared AAMI Hobart Cup winners Macdella (1964-65) and Delarus (1969) is only halfway there in catching the race record-holders Dick Abbott and Bill Clare with six wins each.

And Brian won’t make ground this year as he does not have a cup starter. However, those who could close on his tally are dual winners Gary White, successful with Lord Baracus in 2000 and L’Espion in 1998 and Longford mentor George Blacker, who scored last year with St Andrews and previously with Courtly Way in 1995.

Bracknell trainer Helen Patterson, the first female trainer of a Hobart Cup winner with Viscount Geoffrey scoring in 1984 and then adding another with Macbyrne in 1985, does not have a starter this year.

Joint record holder Abbott trained the winners Moeraki (1919), Nadir Shah (dead-heat 1920), Talisman (1921), Royal Simon (1926 and 1931) and Prince Viol (1929). Clare set the precedent with The Assyrian (1883), Chaldean (1889), Macquarie (1890), Music (1895), Timbrel (1901) and Flavel (1912).

Rare back-to-back wins

St Andrews would further prove to be one of the state’s most outstanding stayers should he follow last year’s AAMI Hobart Cup victory with success again in 2003. No runner since the New Zealand-bred Brallos in 1976-77 has scored successive victories in this event.

Previous back-to-back winners include Roonsleigh (1927-28), Serjki (1955-56) and Macdalla (1964-65).

Helen Patterson was the last trainer to have consecutive AAMI Hobart Cup victories with Viscount Geoffrey (1984) and Macbyrne (1985). Longford trainer George Blacker has the task this year.

Trainer Leon Macdonald remains supremely confident about the chances of his consistent mare Glitzy Guru giving him his first success in the AAMI Hobart Cup to be run at Elwick on February 10.

Glitzy Guru was working home strongly at the end of an 1800m race at Flemington last Saturday, after which Macdonald declared the mare was "right on track for the AAMI Hobart Cup".

"This mare needed another run before the AAMI Hobart Cup and I couldn’t be more pleased with the way she finished off her race on Saturday," Macdonald said.

"She won well in Adelaide over 2500m at her previous start and that win convinced me she would be ideally suited to the AAMI Hobart Cup," he said.

Macdonald is in the process of arranging transport to Tasmania for Glitzy Guru and his three-year-old filly Golden Show, who is heading to the Tasmanian Oaks on February 26.

"Golden Show will run in the Strutt Stakes (2100m) on February 8 and remain in the state for the Tasmania Oaks and if all goes to plan Glitzy Guru will also tackle the AAMI Launceston Cup on the same day as the Oaks," he said.

RACE 1 – ‘OFF TO IRELAND’ SPECIAL OLYMPICS MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey Stephen Maskiell, the rider of the third placed runner SANNARELLE, lodged a protest against the second placed horse WICKED VICE (Dianne Parish) on the grounds that SANNARELLE suffered interference in the home straight. After hearing evidence from the parties and viewing the video footage, the protest was upheld and Stewards amended the Judge’s placings to read 14, 12 and 3. It was established that shortly after straightening WICKED VICE had shifted ground outwards which left an opening to its inside. Thereafter SANNARELLE commenced a run to the inside of WICKED VICE and had to be steadied for a number of strides between the 200 and 150 metre mark when WICKED VICE, who was racing green at the time, shifted ground inwards and tightened SANNARELLE for galloping room. Thereafter SANNARELLE raced in tight room throughout over the concluding stages of the event. Jockey Dianne Parish was shown the video of the incident in the home straight and reprimanded for careless riding (A.R.137(a)). She was advised in the strongest terms to ensure at all times that she keeps her mounts on a straight course.

MOZZY (Ruth Bradley (a)) and DAJARRA (Kelvin Sanderson) were slow away at the start.

BELFRY BOUNTY (Corey Kingston) was slow at the start, losing 2-3 lengths, and failed to muster early speed.

Rounding the home turn LEANAMAREE (Will Stacey (a)) shied in away from WICKED VICE (Dianne Parish) and in doing so crossed EILY’S LASS (David Sparks), who had to be eased by its rider for a number of strides. Shortly thereafter, on entering the straight, LEANAMAREE appeared to lose its footing, resulting in apprentice Stacey momentarily losing his balance. Trainer Leon Wells was advised that a warning had been placed on this filly’s racing manners.

Just prior to straightening STILL SMOKIN (Brendon McCoull), who was being restrained by its rider to avoid the heels of runners in front, shifted outwards and contacted with MOZZY (Ruth Bradley (a)) to its outside. These two horses then made contact for a number of strides. At the same time LOVE TO RHUMBA (David Keating (a)) shifted inwards slightly away from BOURBON PRINCESS (Simon Snell). As a result MOZZY became crowded between LOVE TO RHUMBA and STILL SMOKIN, clipped the heels of LOVE TO RHUMBA and dislodged apprentice Bradley. After inquiring into the incident, stewards could attribute no blame to any one rider and reminded all riders of their obligations when shifting ground. Stewards confiscated the skull cap of apprentice Bradley as a result of her fall in this event. A veterinary inspection of MOZZY subsequent to the event revealed no abnormalities.

At about the 200 metre mark BOURBON PRINCESS (Simon Snell) shifted inwards and as a result LOVE TO RHUMBA (David Keating (a)) had to check out over its heels. Jockey Snell was shown the video of the incident and reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Jockey Leah Goodrick was fined $100 (A.R.85B) for dual engaging herself to ride both TAL QORMI and EILY’S LASS. Stewards, after inquiring into this incident, determined that jockey Goodrick was engaged to ride TAL QORMI, in the event it gained a start, prior to finalising her engagement on EILY’S LASS.

RACE 3 – A J & MRS N SKIRVING CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1380 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

BEGGAR was examined by the veterinary surgeon prior to the event, following a fall on arrival at the course, and passed fit to take its place in the field.

ESSEMBEE (David Pires (a)) was slow to begin.

MINNIE MOUSQUITO (Christie Burt) slipped on jumping.

TARNI ROSE (Leah Goodrick) was slow to muster early speed and then tailed the field throughout.

FLAMIN’ EMMA (Jodi Borrett) and HUTTON (Will Stacey (a)) over-raced in the early stages of the event.

At approximately the 1100 metre mark ESSEMBEE (David Pires (a)) and EVENING SPIRIT (Stan Tsaikos) slipped when making the turn. A veterinary inspection of ESSEMBEE subsequent to the event revealed no abnormalities.

HUTTON (Will Stacey (a)) was held up for a clear run at approximately the 400 metre mark.

At about the 100 metre mark INFAMOUS ANGEL (Simon Snell) switched out to obtain clear running and in doing so carried BEGGAR (Brendon McCoull), who was laying out at the time, outwards onto EVENING SPIRIT (Stan Tsaikos), who had to be eased by its rider. Jockey Snell was spoken to in the strongest terms and advised to ensure that he is clear of runners at all times when shifting ground.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, INFAMOUS ANGEL (Trainer Mr G E Blacker).

RACE 4 – C-MAX CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

BICAPOBLUE (David Pires (a)), BILLIE THE DRILLER (Stan Tsaikos) and JUST LU (Corey Kingston) were slow away at the start.

Leaving the 900 metre mark WINGS OF JADE (Jodi Borrett) shifted out and appeared to lose some ground. When questioned about this horse’s performance jockey Borrett stated that at about the 900 metre mark she felt something amiss with this gelding and elected to place the gelding to the outside of the field. Thereafter, at about the 600 metre mark, she placed WINGS OF JADE under pressure and the gelding appeared to respond, although she still felt that there was something amiss. Jockey Borrett continued to ride hands and heels for some distance thereafter. A veterinary inspection of WINGS OF JADE on return to scale revealed the gelding was lame in the off hind. Stewards will advise trainer Allan Stubbs that he is required to supply a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to WINGS OF JADE’s next race start.

MOUVOIR (Simon Snell) laid in in the straight.

RACE 6 – SHEFFIELD CUP – 1800 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when jockey David Sparks, the rider of TUZLA, wished to view the photo between third and fourth. After viewing the official photo jockey Sparks was satisfied with the result as given by the Judge and correct weight was announced.

DERE TO QUIT (Kevin Ring) jumped awkwardly and blundered at the start.

NAUCHO (Stephen Maskiell) was slow away at the start.

CREIGHTON (NZ) (Dianne Parish) was momentarily held up for a clear run at about the 400 metre mark.

ABBADENA (Simon Snell) laid in in the straight and brushed with DARTINGTON (Leah Goodrick) to its inside. At the same time MURPHY’S MAGIC (Brendon McCoull) shifted outwards, resulting in DARTINGTON becoming momentarily crowded approaching the 50 metre mark.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, ABBADENA (Trainer Mr Troy Blacker).

RACE 7 – R J AYLETT MAIDEN CLASS 1 PLATE – 1800 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

CHOKITO (David Keating (a)), MISTY WEATHER (Kelvin Sanderson) and WESTELLE (Kellie Cook) over-raced in the early stages.

SINODAL (David Pires (a)) was crowded for galloping room, to the inside of RED RONALD (Leah Goodrick), at about the 200 metre mark when this gelding started to tire noticeably and rolled in. As a result SINODAL contacted with WESTELLE (Kellie Cook), who in turn contacted the inside running rail, resulting in jockey Cook becoming momentarily unbalanced. RED RONALD was examined by the veterinary surgeon post-race and appeared fractious, unsettled and anxious. The gelding had a poor recovery and an elevated heart rate. One hour after the event RED RONALD was still fractious and unsettled with a heart rate maintained at 120 beats per minute. The gelding’s heart rate recovery was very poor and RED RONALD was showing evidence of suffering from a bout of colic. After 1 ¾ hours RED RONALD’s heart rate had reduced to 60 beats per minute and the gelding was returned to his stable.

RACE 9 – G A (JOE) MASON MEMORIAL CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

TETON DAKOTA (Stan Tsaikos) was slow away at the start.

SURGE OF POWER (Jodi Borrett) became crowded for galloping room over the concluding stages when ENCOSTA NOVA (Corey Kingston) shifted in and I’LL GET BY (Brendon McCoull) shifted out.

RACE 10 – DUNKIES NEWS ‘N’ FOOD CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed due to a number of riders expressing concern about the start. After viewing the official patrol film, stewards were satisfied that all gates had opened simultaneously and correct weight was announced.

As the start was effected jockey Leah Goodrick (MIGHTY MICKEY) lost her off side stirrup iron which placed her at a disadvantage for the early part of the race. She regained her iron shortly thereafter..

A veterinary inspection of CUVIER BAY subsequent to the event revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, MUSTIN MAYPOLE (Trainer Christine Crook).

GENERAL

Apprentice Ruth Bradley was fined $50 (L.R.19 (h)(iii)) for failing to claim any portion of her allowance on DAUNTING PROSPECT (Race 6), MONAGELA (Race 9) and SUPER HENRY (NZ) (Race 10)

Trainer Mr T W Evans advised Stewards that Trainer Mrs Christine Crook will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for EVENING SPIRIT at today’s race meeting.

** Jockey S Snell was stood down suffering from a severe headache following the running of the event, and was advised by Stewards he must present a medical certificate of fitness prior to riding in trackwork, trials or races.

Master Clarry Connors (Victoria) advised Apprentice Michelle Allen would be in the care of Trainer Patricia Quarrell for today’s race meeting.

Trainer Royston Carr advised Trainer Trevor Hitchens was in charge of his runner US ONLY at today’s race meeting.

RACE 1 –SHAW CONTRACTING MAIDEN PLATE– 2100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) jumped awkwardly at the start and contacted with TERVORT (K Ring).

TERVORT (K Ring) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages of the event.

SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) had to be eased off the heels of FANTA’S LUCK (C Burt) at about the 700 m mark when this mare commenced to give ground. As a result of this RUTHAIN (J Nevin (a)) who was following had to be steadied by its rider, shifted out and contacted with DELFINO (B McCoull)

At about the 700m mark FLY GEORGIE (S Snell) shifted out and contacted with WESTELLE (L Goodrick).

Approaching the home turn SQUIRE MOOR (S Tsaikos) again had to be checked off the heels of CHARZARD (C Kingston) when this horse commenced to give ground and as a result SQUIRE MOOR shifted outwards and inconvenienced LIBERAL LOVER (D Pires (a)) and SONAR DREAM (W Stacey (a)) to its outside.

SONAR DREAM (W Stacey (a)) shifted in under pressure approaching that 150m mark and brushed with DELFINO (B McCoull).

RACE 2 –LILS MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 1) – 1100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

PRINCE SALEM (S Tsaikos) was slow away at the start.

Jockey B McCoull was found guilty of a charge under AR 137 (b) the particulars of the charge being that whilst riding LANGKAWI he failed to ride this filly out to the end of the race over the concluding stages of the event. Jockey McCoull was fined the sum of $100.00. In coming to this decision Stewards took into account that this filly did have a tendency to lay in in the straight, but notwithstanding this fact Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey McCoull could have ridden the filly more vigorously over the concluding stages. Jockey McCoull has the right of Appeal.

A post race Veterinary inspection of LANGKAWI revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 3 –HALLAMS WATERFRONT RESTAURANT MAIDEN PLATE (DIVISION 2) – 1100 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

SMART SIGNAL (K Cook) jumped out and contacted with QUICK AS A BLINK (K Moore) at the start.

SUNJOY (K Dodge) threw its head up at about the 1000m mark and raced ungenerously for some distance thereafter.

ROSIE’S VAIN (M Allen (a)) and CHARMING PRETENDER (B McCoull) brushed shortly after the start when CHARMING PRETENDER (B McCoull) shifted in slightly. Shortly thereafter ROSIE’S VAIN shifted out and contacted with CHARMING PRETENDER resulting in ROSIE’S VAIN becoming unbalanced for a number of strides. Thereafter ROSIE’S VAIN jumped the crossing at about the 800m mark.

RACE 4 –TOM G JOHNSTON SUPERVOBIS TWO-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP – 1100 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

MANCHA (C Kingston) was slow into stride.

WEST EXIT (J Nevin (a)) raced greenly throughout.

Approaching the 600m mark GEHENNA (S Snell) shifted out when placed awkwardly on the heels of BRAINPOWER (S Maskiell) and carried MANCHA (C Kingston) a little wider on the track.

Shortly after straightening NICKY SUE (D Pires (a)) switched out to obtain a clear run and in doing so contacted with MANCHA (C Kingston) to its outside.

A post race Veterinary inspection of MANCHA revealed this gelding to be short in front. Stewards advised Trainer Gary White a Veterinary Certificate of fitness was required prior to this horse’s next race start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event GEHENNA (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 5 –TASMANIAN TURF CLUB LIFE MEMBERS CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

JUST LU (W Stacey (a)) was slow away at the start

Approaching the 1200m metres CLEVER JEEL (C Kingston) had to be steadied off the heels of COMICS (K Dodge).

Leaving the 600m mark MOUVOIR (S Snell) shifted outwards and carried LICAM LACAL (L Goodrick) out on to BILLIE THE DRILLER (S Tsaikos) resulting in these two horse making contact and BILLIE THE DRILLER becoming unbalanced for a number of strides. Stewards severely reprimanded Jockey Snell (careless riding AR 137 (a)) and advised him in the strongest terms that he is to ensure at all times that he keeps his mounts on a straight course and in the event he shifts ground he does so without causing any inconvenience to his fellow riders.

Approaching the home turn CLEVER JEEL (C Kingston) shifted in slightly, carrying AERIAL PURSUIT (D Parish) inwards resulting in AERIAL PURSUIT becoming crowded for galloping room. At the same time DEVON RELAY (K Cook) racing to the inside and ahead of AERIAL PURSUIT shifted out after making contact with ISLE OF EASE (M Allen (a)) to its inside. DEVON RELAY then contacted with AERIAL PURSUIT and became unbalanced. Stewards reprimanded Jockey Kingston (careless riding) and reminded Jockey Allen of her obligations when shifting ground

WINGS OF JADE was held up for a clear run from approximately the 350m mark to the 100m mark.

On return to the mounting yard Trainer Bill Ryan advised Stewards BILLIE THE DRILLER (S Tsaikos) had cast its near front shoe in running.

Stewards spoke to Apprentice W Stacey regarding his use of the whip whilst riding JUST LU and was reminded of the Rules of Racing relating to the use of the whip when a horse is out of contention, and showing no response to the whip.

RACE 9 – AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

At about the 100m mark Apprentice W Stacey took hold of his mount (SCENTIAN BELLE) and switched out over the heels of ALWAYS SLICK (K Ring) when this mare shifted inwards slightly. As a result of this BOMBAY BOY (C Burt) who was following had to be steadied by its rider. Jockey Ring, the rider of ALWAYS SLICK was reminded of his obligations and advised to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

GENERAL

Trainer Ken Dixon advised Stewards that on return to stable after this horse’s last run he ordered a blood test of JOHNY GUM ROL, the result of which indicated JOHNY GUM ROL had a virus which Trainer Dixon believed had affected its performance.

Shortly thereafter SCREENPLAYER dropped back in the field and as a result CALAMITY ROSE (W Stacey A) who was following, had to be steadied by its rider. Notwithstanding the fact that Stewards considered Jockey P Michaelides (OUR DASHING DANE) had fallen short of contravening AR-137(a), Stewards showed Jockey Michaelides the video footage of the early part of this race and advised him that he must ensure that he allows more room for his fellow riders when crossing the field in future.

Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening, LORD OF THE TURF (K Cook) when attempting a run between IAM IAM (D Pires A) and SCREENPLAYER (C Burt) had to be restrained out over the heels of SCREENPLAYER when that horse shifted in marginally and was giving ground.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SCREENPLAYER (Trainer Royston Carr) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Jockey B McCoull was shown the video of the race and advised to take far greater care in future when shifting ground. As a result of this incident MESTINOS (S Maskiell) contacted with POPULAIRE (C Kingston). Jockey McCoull was shown the video footage of the incident and advised to take more care in future.

RACE 4 - MOORILLA 1000 GUINEAS - 3-Y-O- FILLIES – NO CLAIMS - SET WEIGHTS – LISTED – 1600 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

STRATHMORE LUCK (J Nevin A) laid in under pressure in the home straight.

VENUS A GO GO (D Pires A) laid in over the concluding stages and had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of ALL STEALTH (W Hokai) just prior to the finishing line.

Apprentice Nevin was examined by the Club’s Doctor following the running of this race and subsequently stood down from his remaining riding engagements due to an injury to his right hand.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race ALL STEALTH (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 5 - INGHAM JOCKEY CLUB CUP – 2200 METRES – 15 RUNNERS

Stewards acceded to a request from Trainer Mr John Blacker that Jockey Luke Currie ride UNDERTAKE one kilogram overweight.

US AND MAKA (D Keating A) laid in throughout in the home straight which resulted in Apprentice Keating having to stop riding his mount and straighten on a number of occasions.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BRORAMA STAR (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race US AND MAKA (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 6 - THETOTE.COM.AU HOBART GUINEAS 3-Y-O– NO CLAIMS - SET WEIGHTS – LISTED – 2100 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey B McCoull, the rider of DREAM QUEST, placed second by the Judge, wished to view the official photo. There was some further delay as a result of technical difficulties experienced by the staff manning the photo finish. After viewing the photo, correct weight was announced and the Judge’s placings stood.

DREAM QUEST (B McCoull) blundered at the start.

HIGHCLERE (S Snell) and CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) made contact shortly after the start and as a result CONFABULATOR became crowded for galloping room to the inside of HIGHCLERE and was forced to ease.

At about the 1900 metre mark HIGHSTRUNG (K Moore) shied inwards away from BIRLE’S GAMBLE (S Maskiell) and inconvenienced CONFABULATOR (K Dodge) for a number of strides. Shortly thereafter BIRLE’S GAMBLE shifted inwards slightly and HIGHSTRUNG (K Moore) again shied in and away from BIRLE’S GAMBLE which resulted in CONFABULATOR having to be checked by its rider. CONFABULATOR then threw its head up in the air and as a result lost its position. After inquiring into the incident, Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider as they were of the opinion that the incident was a result of horse manners.

On return to scale it was reported that KINGDOM OF STARS (S Cahill) had cast an off-fore plate in running.

Stewards spoke with Trainer B Lomasney in relation to the saddling of HIGHSTRUNG for today’s event. He was advised that he is to ensure that in future this horse is presented in its correct stall within the confines of the race-course.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BIRLE’S GAMBLE (Trainer G White).

RACE 7 - TATTERSALL’S STAKES - NO CLAIMS - WFA - LISTED - 1200 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race KING FLYER (Trainer John Luttrell).

RACE 8 - AUSTRALIA DAY CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 16 RUNNERS

Jockey S Maskiell was dislodged from DON SERENE en route to the barriers. The gelding then galloped for some distance before being recaptured by the Clerk of the Course in the chute at the 1600 metres. DON SERENE was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon at the barriers and passed fit to take its place with the field.

DRY WHITE (W Hokai) broke through the front of the gates and on return to the barriers, was inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who passed the mare fit to take its place in the field.

Jockey W Hokai was questioned regarding the apparent disappointing performance of DRY WHITE in today’s event. He explained to Stewards that this horse stood awkwardly in the gates, missed the start and thereafter failed to muster early speed. In addition he felt something was amiss with this mare in the early part of this event. He stated that after entering the home straight, the mare did respond to some extent and made some ground on the field. Stewards, after viewing the video footage of the race, advised Jockey Hokai that he is to ensure that in future he reports matters that may have affected his horse’s performance on returning to scale. Stewards also advised him that in cases where a horse is showing some response notwithstanding the fact that it had earlier raced in a manner which raised concern in his own opinion, that he is to ride the horse in his normal manner with more vigor than he had done on this occasion.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DRY WHITE (Trainer Gary White) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of TACAMO (Trainer Leon Wells) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 1 – TRAVELPOINT TWO-YEARS-OLD CLASS B HANDICAP – 1000 METRES

The start was delayed several minutes due to the barrier manners of JOSE AMIGO.

Shortly after the start JOSE AMIGO (T Atkin) raced green, losing several lengths and thereafter tailed the field.

Running in the home straight CHANGE THE JACK (S Brazil) was held up behind TRAVEL POINT (P Sarlo) before being able to obtain a clear run to the inside. At that stage jockey Shannon Brazil dropped the whip at approximately the 200-metre mark.

RACE 3 – MIKE McSHANE INSURANCE CLASS D HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

FAMILY FORT (P McLean) and PRACTICAL JOCKER (D Sparks) were both slow to begin.

BEARDSWORTH (P Sarlo) became tightened for room when racing to the inside of PRACTICAL JOKER (D Sparks) at approximately the 450-metre mark.

After taking evidence from both jockeys and viewing the official film, Stewards reminded Jockey Sparks of his obligation when shifting ground and to take more care.

Stewards also issued a reprimand to Jockey Sarlo for the language he used after the finish towards Jockey Sparks. Stewards informed Jockey Sarlo that this would not be tolerated and in future would be dealt with far more harshly.

RACE 5 – POLARIS AUSTRALIA CLASS D HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

Jockey Leigh Taylor (MAGIOCHA) was reprimanded under AR 137 A (1) for excessively using his whip before entering the home straight until the finish line.

RACE 6 – TOTE TASMANIA CLASS B HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

POWER OF PETITE’s (P Sarlo) barrier appeared to be marginally slow to open. Correct weight was delayed for Jockey Sarlo to view the film and also the developed print. After viewing the film Jockey Sarlo did not wish to lodge an objection against the start as it was his intention to ride the horse from off the pace and in missing the start slightly it allowed him to cross from Barrier 4 towards the rail and take up a good position in the run and as a result believes the horse’s performance was not effected. After taking evidence from Jockey Sarlo and acting on their own observations, Stewards were of the same opinion and correct weight was given.

A swab sample was taken from the winner ZARDONI – Trainer James Taylor.

RACE 7 – SILKS MAGAZINE MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1800 METRES

At the start TARRENLEA (P McLean) gate appeared to be marginally slower to open. Peter McLean believed that the mare was not disadvantaged at all as he was able to maintain his position and did not lose any ground whatsoever.

After the event Stewards inspected the barriers and a decision was made for the last race for Barrier 5 not to be used until it could be checked thoroughly.

RACE 8 – TAS SPAN/PIONEER CLASS B HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

The start of this race was delayed when PARRAWEE (S Brazil) broke through the front of the gates and traveled a short distance before being pulled up. PARRAWEE was returned to the barriers, inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.

At approximately the 700 metres mark ST. DONALD (D Sparks), whilst under the whip, ducked in suddenly and contacted the running rail and thereafter raced erratic. At this stage Mr. Sparks had lost his offside iron for some distance before regaining it during the race. After the event Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of this gelding, which found no abnormality. Stewards also informed T Harris, the strapper/owner of St. Donald, that a warning would be placed on this horse for his manners.

At approximately the 200-metre mark BRILLIANT DESIRE (L Bulger) ducked in when being struck with the whip and at the same time AMY’S GIFT (P McLean) also ducked in away from his whip.

TRACK: GOOD

RACE 1 – PATRICK TASMANIA CLASS D HANDICAP – 1000 METRES

PINCHS CHOICE (K Williams (a)) lost ground shortly after the start. Apprentice Kylie Williams was spoken to, as it was clear on jumping she did not have proper purchase on her horse and as a result needed to hang onto the reins in order to steady herself in the saddle thereby causing PINCHS CHOICE to lose ground.

QUIDDITY (P Sarlo) lost ground shortly after the start when being eased by its rider.

GREY CHICK (C Dean) shifted out in the run to the finish and when corrected by its jockey commenced to hang in. Jockey Colin Dean stopped riding at that point and corrected his mount.

RACE 3 – WILLIAM ADAMS/ERN CHITTS BRACELET CLASS D HANDICAP – 2200 METRES

ISLAND QUEST (L Taylor) and RUSSIAN STYLE (T Atkin) were slow into stride.

Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of FLAMIN’ EMBERS, which tired over the concluding stages. In the opinion of the veterinary surgeon FLAMIN’ EMBERS had jarred an old injury in its off fore. Connections advised they would be spelling the horse and on that undertaking Stewards took no further action.

RACE 5 – C J D EQUIPMENT CONSOLATION CLASS D HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

SUNSTAR (K Williams (a)) stood flat-footed at the start. Stewards considered standing SUNSTAR down to a barrier trial, however as the horse had had a good record at the barrier over a long period of time it was felt a large part of the problem today could have been caused by the relative inexperience of Apprentice Jockey K Williams. On that basis Stewards placed a warning only on the barrier manners of SUNSTAR.

RACE 6 – PATRICK SHIPPING CLASS B HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

PARRAWEE (S Brazil) proved fractious at the barrier, delaying the start by approximately a minute.

Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of PORKY PIE, which lost ground over the concluding stages. This revealed no obvious abnormality, however connections advised that it was their intention to retire PORKY PIE and it would not race again.

RACE 7 – DOWLING McCARTHY TYRES CLASS A HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

The start was delayed when ARCTIC EVENING (S Brazil) was leaning against the side of the barrier and would not stand up.

Stewards reprimanded Jockey Troy Atkin (BRILLIANT DESIRE) for losing his whip in the front straight.

Moroney Confirms Tassie Trip for The Mighty Lions

r2mmoroney.jpg (8975 bytes)Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Michael Moroney today confirmed his promising mare The Mighty Lions would have her next start in the AAMI Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 10.

The Mighty Lions was a courageous second in the Visit Handicap over 2020m at Caulfield last Saturday after being forced to race wide for the majority of the trip.

Moroney targeted the AAMI Hobart Cup for the lightly raced four-year-old after she scored an impressive win at Sandown on December 28.

"I believe this mare is of the same mould as Imax and he was very competitive in the Hobart and Launceston Cups last year, so that’s where we intend to go with The Mighty Lions," Moroney said.

Imax was second in last year’s AAMI Hobart Cup behind St. Andrews and he ran third to that horse in the AAMI Launceston Cup.

"I was in New Zealand over the weekend and didn’t see this mare’s run at Caulfield on Saturday but from all reports it was very good and all being well she will have her next start in the AAMI Hobart Cup," he said.

The Mighty Lions has been handicapped to carry 51.5kg in the AAMI Hobart Cup, while last year’s winner St. Andrews and the Gai Waterhouse-trained duo Arlington Road and Stowaway share top weight of 58.5kg.

Moroney is happy with the weight allotted to his mare, but trainer Tony McEvoy is disappointed about the weight for his promising stayer You Little Beaut, who will have to carry second top weight of 56kg if he makes the trip across Bass Strait.

r3tonymcevoy.jpg (9733 bytes)"It was only the weight that got him beaten last start when he had to carry 58kg," McEvoy said.

While McEvoy is now unlikely to send You Little Beaut to Tasmania, he confirmed another of his promising stayers, Jeune’s Mark, would definitely tackle the AAMI Hobart Cup.

"After looking at the weights I can confirm Jeune’s Mark will go to Tassie for the AAMI Hobart Cup as he has 52kg."

"I’m very happy with Jeune’s Mark’s progress and he will have one more run in Melbourne before heading to Hobart," he said.

McEvoy has focused on Tasmania with a number of his stable tenants for some of the feature races during the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival that begins in earnest on Sunday (February 26).

The feature races on the opening day of the carnival are Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Hobart Guineas (2100m) for three-year-olds, weight-for-age Tattersall’s Stakes (1200m) and the Jockey Club Cup that offers the winner ballot free entry into the AAMI Hobart Cup.

McEvoy will despatch his promising three-year-old gelding Kingdom Of Stars to Tasmania by sea on Wednesday (January 23) to prepare for Sunday’s Hobart Guineas and then head to the Tasmania Derby on February 8.
