RACE 1 - BRIGHTON COUNCIL CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 2100 METRES - 6 RUNNERS

The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon inspected BUFFALO LASS prior to the start and passed the mare fit to take its place with the field.

BANDMAN (S Maskiell) was slow into stride.

Approaching the 1600 metre mark, BUFFALO LASS (C Burt) had to be restrained by its rider when placed awkwardly on the heels of BANDMAN (S Maskiell) when the pace slowed up markedly in front. As a result, FANTA’S LUCK (D Pires A) which was following, had to be restrained off the heels of BUFFALO LASS (C Burt) and switched outwards and in doing so inconvenienced BELLARINE LAD (B McCoull) and US ONLY (D Keating A) to its outside. Shortly thereafter, FANTA’S LUCK (D Pires A) was awkwardly placed on the heels of MR O’GRADY (NZ) (S Snell) and switched out and again inconvenienced BELLARINE LAD (B McCoull).

At about the 900 metre mark BUFFALO LASS (C Burt) shifted out abruptly when awkwardly placed on the heels of MR O’GRADY (NZ) (S Snell) when the pace slowed up in front and in doing so brushed with BELLARINE LAD (B McCoull) and carried this gelding outwards slightly.

Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening, MR O’GRADY (NZ) (S Snell) switched to the outside of BANDMAN (S Maskiell) and in doing so inconvenienced FANTA’S LUCK (D Pires A) for a number of strides. Stewards noted that when MR O’GRADY (NZ) (S Snell) switched to the outside of BANDMAN, this gelding had rolled outwards slightly. Notwithstanding this fact, Stewards showed Jockey S Snell, the rider of MR O’GRADY (NZ), the video footage of the incident and advised him to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

Shortly after straightening, MR O’GRADY (NZ) (S Snell) was disappointed for a run between BELLARINE LAD (B McCoull) and BANDMAN (S Maskiell) and had to switch out over the heels of BELLARINE LAD to obtain clear running.

RACE 2 - BRIGHTON HOTEL – MOTEL MAIDEN PLATE - 3-Y-O AND UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1100 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately eleven minutes when THIN ICE (P Michaelides) dislodged its rider (Jockey P Michaelides) at the barriers and thereafter kicked him. THIN ICE then galloped the entire course, proving very difficult to capture and was declared a late scratching at 12.42 pm by order of Stewards. The ambulance staff attended to Jockey Michaelides and advised that he would be unable to fulfill his riding engagement for this event. Bookmakers drew a line through their books at 12.42 pm. Thereafter MATSONATION (C Burt) was declared a late scratching by order of Stewards at 12.53 pm when the gelding proved difficult to load. Bookmakers drew a line through their books at 12.53 pm. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies on THIN ICE and MATSONATION be refunded in full and all win bets to be paid less five cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and five cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket accordingly. Stewards ordered that in view of MATSONATION’s behaviour at the start, the gelding must pass a barrier test during a jump-out session with at least two other horses. Trainer Royston Carr was advised that Stewards had placed a warning on THIN ICE in view of this gelding’s behaviour at the start today.

HE’S QUICK (S Snell) and MALLOW (D Pires A) made contact at the start.

Leaving the 600 metre mark MALLOW (D Pires A) was tightened for room to the inside of BLUE BIALIA (K Lewis) and had to be momentarily steadied by its rider.

QUICK AS A BLINK (W Stacey A) jumped awkwardly at the start and brushed with MALLOW (D Pires A) to its outside and thereafter appeared reluctant to gallop. When questioned, Apprentice Stacey stated that this horse failed to respond shortly after the start and thereafter made the home turn awkwardly. Shortly after straightening when taking hold of the reins, the horse raced very ungenerously and ducked inwards sharply and brushed with the inside running rail at approximately the 250 metre mark. QUICK AS A BLINK gradually shifted outwards up the track in its run to the finish line. Stewards noted Apprentice Stacey’s comments. After considering submissions from Trainer John Luttrell on behalf of QUICK AS A BLINK, and viewing the patrol video, Stewards decided not to require QUICK AS A BLINK to trial before its next race start, however, given Mr Luttrell’s views on the matter, Stewards advised him that they expect to see senior riders declared for this horse in its future engagements.

RACE 3 - GREEN GLORY FRESIAN STUD CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1100 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

RACE 4 - INDEPENDENT ROOFING SERVICE SUPERVOBIS - 3-Y-O CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

BEAR’S SCENE (K Dodge) was slow away.

Shortly after the start, HIGHCLERE (S Snell) became crowded for galloping room between MISTELLA (D Keating A) and ENDLESS TALK (K Lewis) and had to be checked by its rider and clipped the heels of MISTELLA and blundered. It was established that VATICAN ROSE (C Burt) shifted in shortly after the start and carried MISTELLA inwards. At the same time ENDLESS TALK had shifted out slightly which resulted in the interference suffered by HIGHCLERE. In the circumstances, Stewards reprimanded Jockey C Burt [careless riding, AR137(a)] and advised her to take far greater care when shifting ground in the future.

A post-race veterinary inspection of HIGHCLERE (Trainer Terence Evans) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening CREIGHTON (NZ) (D Parish) shifted to the outside of THE SPUNK (R Bradley A) who was tiring at the time and in doing so crowded CAITLIN’S HOPE (S Maskiell) for a number of strides. As a result CAITLIN’S HOPE had to be eased by its rider. Stewards reprimanded Jockey Parish, [careless riding, AR137(a)] the rider of CREIGHTON (NZ) and advised her to take far greater care in future when shifting ground.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race KING FLYER (Trainer John Luttrell).

RACE 8 - TASMANIAN GRAIN ELEVATORS CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1200 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

Trainer Charlie Goggin was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club’s colours on LA SUPREME.

After being loaded into its barrier gate PIA BOOMBA (D Pires A) broke through the front gates. The filly was quickly returned to the barriers, examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to take its place with the field.

NOUGHT (K Cook) jumped in at the start and contacted with DEFRAUD (K Dodge).

Racing towards the 600 metre mark, DEFRAUD (K Dodge) was awkwardly placed on the heels of BEER BARON (L Goodrick) and had to be restrained for a number of strides.

Mr Lewis’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by four race dates in mainland Tasmania, effective midnight, 8 January 2003 and concluding midnight, 27 January 2003.

Ms Leah Goodrick, the rider of RED RONALD, was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for careless riding, in that over the concluding stages she allowed her mount to shift ground inwards when insufficiently clear of the tiring MINNIE MOUSQUITTO (Ken Lewis), causing that filly to be checked by its rider. In not taking any further action, stewards took into account that MINNIE MOUSQUITTO was tiring quickly.

THE ADGIE, which broke free from its attendant in the mounting yard on return to scale, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon, which revealed a small skin abrasion to the near hind stifle area with no associated lameness.

MAN IN BLACK (Stephen Maskiell), which was attempting a run outside I’LL GET BY had to be checked in across the heels of that gelding as a result. Mr Kingston was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for being the major contributor to this incident.

MONAGELA (Kevin Ring) tired noticeably over the concluding stages.

Mr Brendon McCoull, the rider of BELLARINE LAD, was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for careless riding, in that shortly after the start he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards, causing MONAGELA (Kevin Ring) to be checked by its rider.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, DREAM QUEST (Trainer Barry Campbell) and the second placegetter, MURPHY’S MAGIC (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 8 – McKILLOP INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

SWAPAN (Craig Newitt (a)) and GOLD LANE (Dianne Parish) were both slow to muster early speed.

Upon straightening WARPED (Kelvin Sanderson), when attempting a run to the outside of VAIN EDITION (Kevin Dodge), had to be eased by its rider when VAIN EDITION shifted ground outwards under pressure.

WARPED (Kelvin Sanderson) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

After the running of this event stewards questioned Mr Simon Snell, the rider of FLEWELLA, about his apparent lack of whip use over the concluding stages.
