The start of this race was delayed for a short while when it was established, after loading LENNOX (M Hamilton A) into its barrier stall, that the strap on Apprentice M Hamilton’s goggles had broken. Following the event, ROCK ‘N’ SEA was lead back to the mounting yard through the side gate when it appeared to be lame in the off foreleg. A subsequent veterinary inspection of ROCK ‘N’ SEA revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg. RACE 4 - BRALLOS MAIDEN PLATE – 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1600 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

Prior to the announcement of correct weight, GREY GOD (Trainer John Luttrell) was disqualified under the provisions of AR-143 when it was established that the gelding had carried less weight than it should have. Jockey B Mason reported to Stewards that after being a little slow out of the barriers, the saddle suddenly moved forward and broke about 50 metres after the start. He stated that thereafter he had difficulty controlling his mount. After inquiring into the report made by Jockey B Mason, it was established that at approximately the 1000 metres, the lead bag (1.7 kg) fell out. Stewards also inspected the condition of the saddle which appeared to be of a good standard and in good condition.

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected the bandages on CALL ME DIGGER (Trainer Douglas Brazendale) at the barriers then cleared the gelding to race.

At about the 600 metres REGENT PRINCE (J Nevin A) shifted in and tightened SKINNY DIPPING (C Burt) to its inside which was then checked. Following the running of this event, Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of WOBBLEY. After taking evidence from Apprentice D Pires, in the presence of his Master for the day, Mr A Stubbs, the trainer of WOBBLEY, Mr John Luttrell and acting on their own observations, Stewards advised Apprentice Pires that although on this occasion his handling of the horse fell short of a possible breach of AR-135(b) he should ensure that he rides his mounts so as to leave no room for query. Stewards expressed their concern regarding the manner in which he rode the horse near the 600 metre mark and again over the concluding stages. It was Stewards’ view that at the 600 metre mark Apprentice Pires could have shown more initiative to establish his position to the outside of BUNDALAGUAH (R Hanby A). It was further established that WOBBLEY (D Pires A) was held up for a clear run for the majority of the home straight to the inside of TUZLA (D Sparks) and behind THE SPUNK (W Hokai) and after leaving the 100 metre mark appeared to want to lay out and shifted out to immediately behind TUZLA (D Sparks).

Trainer John Luttrell was issued with a reprimand under LR-35(c) for not having NUNKERRI KOREKA on course within the prescribed time. Mr Luttrell explained to Stewards that his shortage of stable staff contributed to the problem. Stewards advised Mr Luttrell that this was not a good enough reason and they would expect that his horses would be on course an hour before their race in future.

A post-race veterinary inspection of WOBBLEY failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Stewards also advised Mr Blacker to review his communication arrangements and was advised that a re-occurrence may result in action by Stewards.

Following a submission from Trainer Mick Burles and acting on his assurance that he had not lodged a Stable Return to remove blinkers from ASA MAC, Stewards granted permission for ASA MAC to race in blinkers. Following the running of this event Stewards heard one of the owners of PETER GUN, Mr P J Ware, who expressed some concerns regarding the manner in which this gelding was ridden in today’s event. The rider Jockey C Burt stated that her instructions were to ride this gelding forward as per its normal style of running, she then stated that although the horse had travelled well it was not comfortable going through some of the wet patches on the track. Thereafter, turning for home, the gelding did not respond to any efforts under hands and heels riding and was compounding quickly. Jockey Burt stated that as a result she did not draw the whip on this gelding as she felt it would serve no purpose. Mr Ware was given an opportunity to question Jockey Burt. The parties viewed the video of the race with the Stewards after which Mr Ware stated that he was satisfied with the manner in which Jockey Burt rode the horse.

After giving consideration to Trainer Brunton’s submission, Stewards advised him that in this instance, as there were suitable senior riders available, his request was denied.

Rounding the turn at the 1200 metre mark, MR SOHO (S Snell) shied in and away from the outside running rail resulting in NANNIE DIGGER (K Dodge) being carried in across the heels of BICAPOBLUE (S Quilty).

Jockey Kingston stated that he did try to adopt his normal pattern of riding on the gelding, however, the gelding was reluctant to stretch out and race on the bit at any stage of the race. He tested the gelding at about the 1200 metre mark and he was of the opinion that the gelding was gone at that stage of the race. He further stated that the hard run on the heavy track at Mowbray the previous week may have had a bearing on today’s performance. Stewards noted Jockey Kingston’s comments. A post-race veterinary inspection of BASE JUMPER (Trainer Rodney Seymour) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 7 - GOLDING FAMILY HANDICAP – 1400 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

The mare was restrained by the Clerks of the Course and returned to behind the barriers where the veterinary surgeon inspected it. After being re-loaded, LAKE SOLVEIG again broke through the barriers and cantered riderless from the 1000 metres round to the crossing at the 1900 metres where it entered the race-day stalls area and was recaptured. LAKE SOLVEIG was returned to the barriers, where it was inspected and passed fit to take its place with the field. Upon re-loading, LAKE SOLVEIG became fractious in the barriers resulting in Jockey S Maskiell suffering an injury to his left ankle. After undergoing an examination by the on-course ambulance officers, Jockey Maskiell was declared fit to take his ride on the mare. The race was approximately fifteen minutes late starting. Trainer Gary White was advised that a warning has been placed on LAKE SOLVEIG’s barrier manners.

DAUBERWIN (K Dodge) was inclined to shift ground up the track under pressure over the concluding stages.

Mr Ian Hay, the trainer of RULAANI (the third placegetter) lodged an objection following the running of the event, on the grounds of his horse being placed at an unfair advantage due to LAKE SOLVEIG breaking through the barriers and delaying the start. The start of the race was further delayed to avoid race clashes at other venues. Stewards, after hearing Mr Hay’s submission, declared correct weight.
