RACE 1 - CHURCH OF APOSTLES MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Trainer Terry Roles was fined $50 under AR 59A (d) for not having the Document of Description for ROBESPIERRE available for inspection.

Trainer Leon Wells was charged $27.50 for the use of the all pink Club colours on LADY ETOILE.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey T Atkin the rider of the 4th placed horse AMELINDA lodged a protest against the 3rd placed horse HYDE (S Tsaikos) on the grounds of interference over the last 200m of the event. It was established that shortly after leaving the 200m mark HYDE rolled in marginally. As a result AMELINDA who was making ground to its inside had to be steadied and checked out over the heels of this filly to obtain a clear run. It was Stewards view that the interference suffered by AMELINDA exceeded the margin of a half head at the lime. Stewards upheld the protest and the Judge’s placings were amended to 5, 7, 10, 11, 14. Correct weight was announced at 12.58 p.m.

ATTO (S McFerran) jumped awkwardly at the start and bounded in the air.

PINTERRY MORGAN (D Pires (a)) was slow away.

Shortly after the start SAFE HAVEN (K Bandy) commenced to buck and ducked in abruptly and thereafter continued to buck. As a result Jockey Bandy restrained his mount and eased this filly out of the event. In view of this filly’s intractable behaviour Stewards advised Trainer Graeme McCulloch it is to trial to the satisfaction of Stewards before it’s next race start.

Stewards charged Jockey S Maskiell the rider of ROYAL ASSAULT under AR 137 (a), Careless Riding, the particulars of the charge being that approaching the 900m mark he permitted his mount to shift ground inwards and in doing so crossed HYDE (S Tsaikos) when insufficiently clear of this filly, which resulted in Jockey Tsaikos having to check his mount and switch out over the heels of ROYAL ASSAULT to obtain a clear run. However, Stewards withdrew the charge after taking into account the following evidence in relation to this matter. The evidence of Jockey S Tsaikos that he had anticipated the movement of ROYAL ASSAULT and when easing back on his mount it overreacted and also evidence tendered by Trainer W Ryan (ROYAL ASSAULT) to the effect that this gelding has a “dead mouth”. Jockey S Maskiell was of the opinion that ROYAL ASSAULT did not respond immediately to his efforts to straighten. In the circumstances Stewards gave Jockey Maskiell the benefit of the doubt. However, notwithstanding this fact, Stewards advised Jockey Maskiell that in future he is to take far greater care when shifting ground. As a result of this incident ANDRE THE GIANT (B McCoull) shied away from HYDE and crowded SAVONNEUX (K Sanderson) to its inside.

A post race Veterinary inspection of SAFE HAVEN revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event ANDRE THE GIANT (Trainer Helen Patterson).

Thereafter TAL JACK continued to shift ground marginally both ways and momentarily crowded SANDASTA approaching the home turn. Thererafter TAL JACK (R Hanby (a)) had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages of the event resulting in Apprentice Hanby having to stop riding and straighten her mount.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event SANDASTA (Trainer John Blacker).

OUR KING’S IMAGE (K Bandy) elected for a tight run between TAL MISS (J Geard) to its inside, who shifted ground outwards slightly, and LE COUNT (L Goodrick) to its outside over the concluding stages. As a result OUR KING’S IMAGE brushed with both horses. Jockey Bandy was spoken to in this regard and advised to take more care in future.

RACE 6 - CATHOLIC DEVELOPMENT FUND HANDICAP - 1600 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

CORINDHAP (D Parish) jumped awkwardly at the start and contacted with LOVE ME BACK (J Borrett).

Stewards questioned all riders in this event, with the exception of the winning rider, on their riding instructions and tactics. In addition, Stewards took note of the betting activity in this event and also questioned Trainer Darrel Baldock (DERE TO QUIT) and Trainer Graeme McCulloch (LUNAR TIARA) on the instructions given to their riders. In the circumstances Stewards were satisfied that there had been no breach of the Rules regarding running and handling however all riders were advised that Stewards had concern for the fact that no one rider showed initiative to make ground on CAUSE TO GOSSIP (T Atkin) until well inside the 800m mark. Stewards further advised all riders in general terms that in future in similar circumstances they are to adopt a more competitive approach and show more initiative than they did on this occasion.

GRAND ARTIST (C Burt) and SUPER BREW (S Tsaikos) laid in throughout in the straight.

CLAUSE TWO (K Sanderson) raced greenly in the straight.

BRIDGEWATER JERRY (W Stacey A) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event and was difficult to restrain.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening, BRIDGEWATER JERRY (W Stacey A) became crowded for galloping room to the inside of LE TOUCH (C Burt) and CENTERTAIN (B McCoull) and had to be steadied by its rider when attempting a tight run to the inside of LE TOUCH.

Shortly after the start SECRETARY LADY (S Snell) was tightened between CHERRY WILD (B McCoull) and TAGISH (K Bandy) who both shifted ground marginally.

KING KELTRICE (N Stanley) got its head up and raced ungenerously in the early stages.

Racing between the 1000 metres and the 800 metres, CHERRY WILD (B McCoull) was inclined to lay in despite the efforts of its rider.

Shortly after straightening, JETBOY JUNIOR (K Cook A) was held up for a number of strides behind the tiring DOUGIE’S PRIDE (S Tsaikos).

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey B McCoull, the rider of CHERRY WILD wished to view a photo print of the finish. RACE 6 - COLLEX PTY LTD CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1600 METRES - 15 RUNNERS

Apprentice R Hanby brought to Stewards’ attention the fact that she did not believe she held a firm engagement for STRATHMORE LASS as she had not been advised through her Master and was unaware of her engagement for the mare in today’s event. She further stated that she had been tentatively booked for DONATIVA (NZ) who was the first emergency which subsequently gained a start. After speaking with Trainer Mr R M Worbey, Stewards deemed that Apprentice Hanby did not hold a confirmed engagement for STRATHMORE LASS and advised him that when engaging apprentice riders in the future, he must confirm engagements with the parties prior to declaring riders for his horses.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Stewards wished to view the start as to whether I’LL GET BY (L Goodrick) and DONNA MAJELLA (S Snell) were denied a fair start. After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, the protest was dismissed. Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared. It was established that at approximately the 100 metres, SILVER LASER (S Snell) rolled out under pressure resulting in TURBULENT FORCE (D Parish) being momentarily inconvenienced. However, Stewards were of the opinion that the interference suffered by TURBULENT FORCE did not exceed the margin between the two runners at the end of the race. Therefore, the Judge’s placings stood and correct weight was announced.

Approaching the 600 metres, OLOKAI (L Goodrick) shifted in marginally resulting in TURBULENT FORCE (D Parish) being crowded and taken in on to SILVER LASER (S Snell). At approximately the 250 metres, MASTER SONAR (K Bandy) shifted out and brushed with PERSONAL PEAK (C Kingston) for a number of strides.

At approximately the 200 metres, Apprentice E Chan (MESTINOS) accidentally dropped his near-side rein and when attempting to re-gather, he allowed his mount to shift ground outwards. Apprentice Chan was shown the incident in the presence of his Master, Mr G White.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey S Tsaikos (TARKINE) wished to view the video with a view to lodging a protest. After viewing the video, Jockey S Tsaikos decided against lodging a protest and correct weight was announced.

RACE 2 - JIMMY’S LIQUOR MAIDEN PLATE - 1100 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

AMELINDA was a late scratching by order of Stewards at 8.30 a.m. after receiving a call from trainer Mr Mark Ganderton who stated that he had tried to make contact with both the Tasmanian Turf Club and the Deloraine Turf Club prior to 8.00 am in order to scratch his horse but was unable to make contact with any person at either Club. Following this a message was relayed to TOTE control at 9.00 a.m. to advise that the first emergency LADY RUNYON had gained a start in the field. However, it was established at approximately 12.45 p.m. that TOTE control did not have AMELINDA as a scratching and neither did they have LADY RUNYON as a starter. It was also established that on-course Bookmakers had AMELINDA as a scratching and the majority had priced up on LADY RUNYON. In the circumstances Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of both horses. LADY RUNYON was a late scratching at 12.52 p.m. As LADY RUNYON was quoted at 14-1 at the time of scratching, Stewards ordered a refund on all bets struck prior to 12.52 p.m. and a deduction of 6c in the win and 6c in the place. Stewards ordered a refund on all bets struck on AMELINDA with no further deductions. Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening MAMBO TWIST (Leah Goodrick) was held up for a clear run behind ON PROBATION (Rebecca Hanby (a)) for a number of strides.

LINE DANCING (Kelvin Sanderson) laid in under pressure approaching the 100 metre mark and as a result jockey Sanderson had to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Stewards questioned jockey Diane Parish, the rider of WICKED VICE, regarding her riding over the concluding stages. Jockey Parish stated that this horse had a tendency to lay in and as a result she had dropped her off side rein at approximately the 100 metre mark. Thereafter, in her opinion, the horse continued to lay in. Stewards, after considering the evidence and notwithstanding the fact the horse had a tendency to lay in and raced greenly in the straight, reprimanded jockey Parish for failing to ride her horse out to the end of the race (AR137(b)). She was advised to ride her mounts to the line unless there is some factor preventing her from doing so.

A veterinary inspection of MAMBO TWIST revealed the gelding had blood in its mouth as the result of a minor bleed from a cut tongue.

A post-race veterinary examination of DOUGY (Ruth Bradley (a)) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

After hearing all the evidence the protest was dismissed and correct weight was announced at 3.49 p.m. It was established that ZARINA BOY shifted in under pressure at about the 100 metre mark and in doing so brushed with FAMILIAR TYCOON to his inside, who became momentarily unbalanced. Jockey McCoull, the rider of ZARINA BOY, immediately put both hands on the reins and straightened his mount. Thereafter both riders continued to ride their horses to the finish. Stewards reprimanded jockey McCoull for careless riding (AR137(a)), for allowing his horse to shift ground in the straight. He was advised to ensure in future that he makes an attempt to straighten his mount far sooner than he did on this occasion.

Approaching the 1100 metre mark MISS TIFFANY (David Pires (a)) shifted out slightly and in doing so carried LUCKY DALE (Dianne Parish) a little wider up the track.

Approaching the 600 metre mark LOTTA FUN (NZ) (Will Stacy (a)) compounded and started to drop back in the field. As a result PHILANTHROP (Kane Bandy), who was following, had to be steadied by its rider and shifted outwards to obtain a clear run. In doing so PHILANTRHOP brushed with PINTERRYON (Rebecca Hanby (a)) to its outside and at the same time BOMBAY BOY (Jodi Borrett), who was racing to the outside of PINTERRYON, had to be steadied off the heels of SPRINGHILL LASS (Stan Tsaikos). Apprentice Stacy (LOTTA FUN (NZ) was reprimanded for the manner in which he used his whip. It was the stewards’ opinion that this horse was showing no response to the whip. Apprentice Stacy was advised, in the strongest terms, that should he use his whip in the future in a similar manner, much stronger action may be taken.

Apprentice R Bradley (FAMILIAR TYCOON) accidentally dropped her whip at about the 200 metre mark.

RACE 6 - BUNDY GOLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

Jockey Snell was suspended from riding in races for a period equivalent to three Tasmanian race dates, effective midnight Monday 21 April 2003 and to expire midnight Sunday 4 May 2003. Jockey Snell has the right of appeal. In coming to a decision on penalty stewards exercised the discretion afforded under LR5(q) to defer the commencement of the suspension for a period of two days.
